perf(kv-router): share ZMQ contexts across services sockets; dial replay per gap - #17253
Every ZMQ socket in lib/kv-router/src/services (the selection service, the standalone indexer and replica sync) created its own zmq::Context, which brings an I/O thread and a reaper thread. On top of that, every worker rank with a replay_endpoint kept a replay DEALER open for the life of its listener, idle except during replays. Ray Serve LLM's vLLM KV-events config advertises both endpoints. So the embedded SelectionService in each Ray ingress replica ran about four threads per worker rank: 4,118 threads at 1,024 workers. This PR shares process-wide ZMQ contexts and opens the replay DEALER only for a replay.

Requests/s stays flat because the Ray ingress is bound by its GIL thread. The savings are per ingress replica, and every replica subscribes to every worker. On the HTTP selection service, ZMQ ingest was about 20% of a saturated 16-core process.
Details:
services/common/zmq.rs. Sockets are created in a process-wide ContextPool.
Each context gets DYN_ZMQ_IO_THREADS I/O threads. The runtime event plane reads the same variable, and the default is 4.
libzmq caps a context at ZMQ_MAX_SOCKETS (1023), which the zmq crate cannot raise. A closed socket keeps its slot until the context's reaper thread frees it, so the pool does not count sockets itself: a socket goes to the first context that accepts it, and the pool adds a context only when every existing one refuses with EMFILE.
The bound replica-sync PUB stays on its own context. Dropping it terminates that context, which waits until libzmq has closed the listener, so the port is free when shutdown() returns, as before this PR. In a shared context the close is asynchronous.
Linger stays 0.
services/indexer/listener.rs.ListenerLoop now keeps the replay endpoint rather than a socket. replay_gap opens a DEALER for the replay and drops it afterwards.
The replay protocol, watermark, per-(worker, rank) ordering and error handling are unchanged.
The only behavior change: the replay connection is now made when a replay starts, not when the listener starts.
Both listener sockets are now owned by ListenerLoop, so the SharedSocket (Arc<tokio::Mutex<…>>) alias and its free send_multipart/recv_multipart helpers are gone.
Why not reuse the frontend's pooled direct-ZMQ subscribers.
They live in dynamo-runtime and dynamo-llm, which services/ may not depend on.
They tell messages on a shared SUB socket apart by the Dynamo envelope's publisher-ID frame. Raw vLLM batches carry no worker identity, and Ray publishes on topic "", so sharing a SUB socket across workers would mix their sequence spaces.
Pooling SUB sockets would need per-worker topics in the registration API, which is a possible follow-up.
Docs.DYN_ZMQ_IO_THREADS is added to the standalone selection and indexer pages.
Where should the reviewer start?
ContextPool in services/common/zmq.rs, then replay_gap in services/indexer/listener.rs.

Socket churn near the libzmq cap, as a scratch test that isn't committed: 1,000 SUB sockets, then 20 rounds of dropping 100 and recreating 100 at once. With the earlier 1,000-lease pool, 1,540 of 2,000 creations failed with EMFILE; with this PR's pool, 0 of 2,000 fail, spread over two contexts.
Late-start replay smoke, run locally against real mocker replay endpoints:
Setup: two selection services built from this branch. The bench ray flow drives the first with 8 mocker workers, each running a replay ROUTER. 10 s into traffic, the same 8 workers are registered on the second service, so each of its listeners joins mid-stream and replays from sequence 0 over a new connection.
Result: 8 of 8 replays completed (186–344 batches each, 12–16 ms including the connect), with 0 incomplete replays, connect failures or errors. After the run, both services' /dump indexes were identical (551 events).
…lay per gap
Every services ZMQ socket created its own zmq::Context, an I/O thread plus
a reaper thread each, and every worker rank with a replay endpoint kept an
idle replay DEALER for its listener's life. Ray Serve LLM advertises both
endpoints, so an embedded SelectionService ran about four threads per
worker rank.
- Sockets lease a slot in process-wide contexts: DYN_ZMQ_IO_THREADS I/O
threads each (default 4, as in the runtime event plane), up to 1000
sockets each, under libzmq's default ZMQ_MAX_SOCKETS of 1023.
- The KV-event listener opens its replay DEALER only for a replay.

The router now pools ZMQ contexts, with configurable I/O thread counts and a 1,000-socket capacity per context. Replay sockets connect when a replay gap is handled. The developer guide documents the context setting.

Pool contexts and lease sockets lib/kv-router/src/services/common/zmq.rs, docs/fern/pages/developer-guide/knowledge-base/modular-components/router/standalone-indexer.md, docs/fern/pages/developer-guide/knowledge-base/modular-components/router/standalone-selection.md
A process-wide pool reuses contexts with capacity for 1,000 socket leases each. DYN_ZMQ_IO_THREADS sets the I/O thread count; the default is 4. Socket construction acquires a lease, and closing a socket releases it. A test checks context creation and lease reuse. Both CLI tables document the setting and context limit.
Connect replay sockets on demand lib/kv-router/src/services/indexer/listener.rs
ListenerLoop stores an optional replay endpoint and connects a replay socket when handling a gap. run_listener no longer connects a replay socket before entering the loop. The framing test uses a completion channel.
A burst of replay connections could occasionally skip a gap if closed sockets have not finished releasing their slots. The risk is bounded but warrants owner awareness before merging.

The pool counted sockets per context and capped them at 1000, but
libzmq frees a closed socket's slot only after the context's reaper
thread runs. Replay DEALER churn near the cap could therefore get EMFILE
from a context the pool still counted as having room, and replay_gap
would drop the gap.
Drop the pool's own count: create each socket in the first context that
accepts it and add a context only when every existing one refuses with
EMFILE. This also removes the per-socket lease.

The lifecycle test retried construction for 5 s after shutdown(), which
hid the shared-context race: a bound PUB in a pooled context closes its
listener asynchronously, so an immediate rebuild could hit EADDRINUSE
(5 of 30 runs at 29a3a99). 3566569 gave bound publishers their
own context again; build the replacement right after shutdown() with
one attempt so the regression stays covered. The drop case keeps the
retry, since drop cancels the task asynchronously.

The replay DEALER now lives for one replay and the live SUB has a
single owner, so neither needs Arc<tokio::Mutex<..>>. ListenerLoop owns
both as ZmqSocket; replay_gap connects inline. This removes the
SharedSocket alias, the free send_multipart/recv_multipart helpers,
connect_replay_socket and its per-replay "connected" log.
