Summary

  • Import the reference AgentX per-lane snapshot selections and consumed corpus cursor instead of assuming that matching a seed reproduces AIPerf's NumPy choices.
  • Validate lane counts, source IDs, source-time cuts and cursor as one explicit input; never silently resample invalid imported selections.
  • Preserve the existing seed-only path, serialized defaults, lane identities and sequential recycling. The optional exporter invokes pinned SemiAnalysisAI/aiperf@754356e9a39acc6cc6afb242d123bb57c3fb6f75; it adds no AIPerf/NumPy runtime dependency.

Stack and review focus

Updated on October 19 against main c9e7363bf5983b980fe6622f7b064ee7adff5f5d, including merged #382. Current head: c218f118b180a872e3d4ce6c2f9bf4c83b5260b0.

Review order: #463 → #465 → #492. This PR is snapshot selection only; live-advancing warmup and the causal-handoff correction remain in the stacked PRs. The synchronization preserves history with a signed merge commit, not a force push.

Please focus on exact selection/cursor import, recycling after consumed reference draws, and unchanged behavior when the new fields are absent.

Review fixes (October 19)

  • Fix the stale integration-test initializer with AgenticSnapshotOptions::seeded(42); do not substitute a --lib run for workspace coverage.
  • Require an explicit exporter trace format. Weka cuts subtract the earliest request start across the complete root/child tree; Mooncake cuts keep the source clock. The importer/wire contract is unchanged. Cover both out-of-bounds rejection and silently accepted wrong frontiers.
  • Persist create-new provenance sidecars containing reference revision, input/output hashes, root order and per-lane clock conversion. Stdout mode requires an explicit sidecar path.
  • Historical zero-origin 15-lane exports remain byte-identical. Older nonzero-origin Weka exports must be regenerated.

Validation

  • Fresh exact-head Rust 1.96.1 embed-python native; 880 focused Python tests and 2,077 core embedded-Python Rust tests passed (one pre-existing locally provisioned R17 artifact test ignored).
  • Full default cargo test --workspace --locked --offline at the updated fix: preserve causal delays after AgentX live warmup #492 stack tip: 2,175 passed, including 158 integration tests, plus 16 excluded public-API tests. The previously failing tokenization integration target passed all 12 cases. This is explicitly stack-tip coverage.
  • Independent exporter/native-loader suite: 28 passed. Shifting all 98,827 real reference request clocks by +10s leaves Weka's 15-lane selections unchanged and preserves the shift for Mooncake.
  • A redundant all-target release/embed LTO build was stopped after its core test executable completed; it is not claimed as completed all-target coverage.
  • Source copyright, packaged legal files, documentation links/tests, strict CODEOWNERS coverage, generated artifact byte parity, Rust formatting, CI-scoped Ruff and whitespace checks passed. Fake-identity Git test fixtures used a process-local signing override only; every published commit remains GPG-signed and DCO-certified.
  • Independent exact-head review found no remaining actionable finding. Hosted CI is tracked on the new head; historical checks do not qualify it. No goldens or performance data were rewritten.

Boundaries

This imports source selections, not an engine checkpoint, tokenizer/chat-template bytes, random/shuffled recycling or HTTP behavior. It does not change the performance model, enable AgentX tokenization, or add GPU work.

📝 Summary

Risk: Medium. The three areas for human attention are imported-selection replay semantics, exporter fidelity to the pinned AIPerf code, and compatibility for Rust callers of AgenticSnapshotOptions.

  • AgenticSnapshotOptions adds paired initial_selections and corpus_cursor fields. Rust preparation validates lane count, cursor bounds, source play IDs, and graph timing. Imported cuts are used directly. Seed-only input retains the existing sampling path.
  • The replay context starts at the imported cursor, including skipped draws. It defaults to the lane count when no cursor is imported.
  • Python configuration and Workload validation enforce paired fields and exactly one selection per lane. Seed-only serialization remains unchanged.
  • The exporter verifies an exact clean AIPerf checkout at 754356e9a39acc6cc6afb242d123bb57c3fb6f75. It validates sequential sampling, root mappings, timestamps, cuts, clock conversion, and provenance. AIPerf and NumPy remain outside runtime dependencies.
  • AgenticSnapshotOptions is no longer Copy. Rust callers should use AgenticSnapshotOptions::seeded(seed). The public API adds AgenticSnapshotSelection and initial_corpus_cursor().

One human review item remains. Rust snapshot code references AIPerf 7db2ba37a62aa80c882bc90eaf61cc8073e2387b, while the exporter uses AIPerf 754356e9a39acc6cc6afb242d123bb57c3fb6f75. The repository also uses the newer revision for AgentX replay documentation and profile code. Confirm that the split is intentional and that the exporter’s selector matches the Rust replay contract.

The supplied evidence reports focused tests, exact-head native checks, a native roundtrip, lint and format checks, documentation-link checks, and ownership checks. These results are author-reported. Test logs, hosted CI results for the new SHA, independent exporter parity artifacts, and review approval were not supplied. Review severity counts are unavailable because no current review findings were supplied.

Technical quality and merge readiness remain separate. The inspected implementation supports the main validation and exporter contracts. It does not independently prove exporter fidelity or the reported test results.

The change adds lane-ordered snapshot selections and a corpus cursor to agentic replay configuration and preparation. It adds a pinned AIPerf snapshot exporter, validation and replay tests, workload documentation, provenance notices, and ownership entries.

The exporter checks the pinned AIPerf source and sequential sampling inputs, then emits selections and provenance. Tests and documentation cover the export and import workflow; notices identify upstream provenance and licensing.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~25 minutes

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to c218f

Imported AgentX snapshot selections and the corpus cursor are added without changing seed-only behavior. Downstream Rust consumers that construct the snapshot options type directly will need a small update to use the new constructor when they upgrade. Coordinate that migration; otherwise the change is mergeable once CI passes on the current head.

Full details: Modeling And Data Evidence

Explanation

The selection-logic change has reproducible independent-oracle evidence. crates/core/src/replay/loadgen/snapshot_tests.rs:493-604 records exact AIPerf-derived cuts, lane order, cursor behavior, recycling, and strict invalid-input checks. The exporter at scripts/prediction_regression/export_agentx_snapshots.py:4-10,71-124,169-209 pins the AIPerf revision, invokes its selector, records skipped draws and clock conversions, and writes hashed provenance before output. tests/test_agentx_snapshot_export.py:24-282 adds machine-readable anomaly and persistence checks. Legacy seed-only behavior remains covered by the unchanged-path assertions and serialization tests.

Full details: Review Evidence

Explanation

The PR description reports an exact-head native build, 861 focused tests, a native roundtrip, and lint, format, documentation-link, and ownership results. It describes boundary validation for lane counts, invalid selections, source IDs, cuts, and cursor values. It separates current validation from historical parity evidence and explicitly states that hosted CI must be evaluated on the new SHA. It does not cite inactive nested workflows as hosted CI evidence.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is mostly complete. It explains the behavior change, review focus, compatibility boundaries, test evidence, provenance, and known coverage limits. It does not use the exact template headings and omits explicit risk level, Codex-reviewed commit, and tracking entries, but the required review context is otherwise provided.

Full details: Cross-Layer Contract

Explanation

The cross-layer contract is still incomplete. The PR adds imported initial_selections and corpus_cursor in Rust and Python, preserves them through compilation and runner payloads, and adds native/config/runner tests. However, affected consumers remain stale: docs/replay/agentic/warmup.md:139-147 documents only seed-based sampled cuts, :170-172 says reports contain a sampled cut, and python/aisimulate/src/aisimulate/cli_args.py:57 says agentic_snapshot selects only seeded starts. docs/sweeper/sdk.md:242-243 also broadly says snapshot sampling differs from AgentX, despite imported snapshots using supplied exact cuts. The warmup and CLI files are unchanged in the reviewed PR range, so the standing failure remains causal and unresolved.

Resolution

Update the warmup documentation to distinguish seed-only sampled snapshots from imported exact cuts and to document corpus_cursor and report evidence. Update CLI help to describe seeded or imported starts. Qualify the SDK profile limitation for seed-only sampling. Keep the existing compiler, runner, exporter, and native tests.

Full details: Compatibility Boundaries

Explanation

The Rust public API changed without synchronized downstream versioning. The reviewed head adds initial_selections and corpus_cursor to AgenticSnapshotOptions and removes its Copy/Eq derives (crates/core/src/replay/loadgen/snapshot.rs:27-54); the PR fixes the remaining AISimulate literal in crates/core/tests/replay_tokenization.rs:305-308. However, Dynamo still uses AgenticSnapshotOptions { seed: 7 } at ai-dynamo/dynamo@4ee36793506dee95b4c654cf281bdfaea1c423b0, lib/mocker/src/replay/agentic.rs:153,208,264,273, while its workspace pins aisimulate-core = "=0.13.0-dev.2" at Cargo.toml:62 and its lockfile resolves that version at Cargo.lock:36. The PR changes no Cargo manifest or lock file (git diff reports no package-manifest changes). The one-wheel/one-crate layout is otherwise unchanged, but the standing compatibility failure remains.

Resolution

Publish the changed Rust API under a compatible crate version, update Dynamo's exact aisimulate-core dependency and all lockfiles, and replace the four Dynamo struct literals with AgenticSnapshotOptions::seeded(...). Add a downstream compile check for this public API. Preserve the existing one-wheel and one-crate artifact layout.

Linked repositories findings

ai-dynamo/dynamo

  • The mocker re-exports aisimulate_core::replay::loadgen::* via lib/mocker/src/loadgen/mod.rs:8. Its replay tests still construct AgenticSnapshotOptions { seed: 7 } at lib/mocker/src/replay/agentic.rs:153,208,264,273. These literals will need AgenticSnapshotOptions::seeded(7) or the new fields when consuming the updated type. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • The Python replay boundary deserializes agentic_snapshot generically with pythonize::depythonize at lib/bindings/python/rust/llm/replay.rs:319-322; the Python API forwards the mapping unchanged at components/src/dynamo/replay/api.py:313-326. No field-specific downstream filtering was observed, so initial_selections and corpus_cursor can pass through this boundary. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • Public documentation only describes agentic_snapshot as a mapping containing seed at docs/fern/pages/reference/components/dynosim-replay-cli-reference.mdx:317-319; it omits the new import fields and their constraints. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]

ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator

  • No references to AgenticSnapshotOptions, agentic_snapshot, initial_selections, or corpus_cursor were found in the repository’s broad search. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]

Addressed the remaining out-of-diff notes from the review in 93517a7:

  • The Sweeper Workload schema now enforces exactly one imported selection per lane, matching the prediction/recommendation traffic schemas. Too-few/too-many selections are rejected early; seed-only serialization stays unchanged.
  • Existing compiler, recommendation and runner payload tests now cover imported selections and cursor as well as legacy seed-only input.
  • Updated the SDK field table and workload descriptions to distinguish imported cuts from sampled cuts and document the paired-field constraints.

Validation: 738 config/runner/exporter tests passed against the exact PR native extension, plus a real native roundtrip preserving both selected cuts and cursor 3. Ruff/format, documentation links and explicit ownership checks passed. The earlier ownership thread was already fixed in 17356c1 and resolved; no exporter implementation or unrelated downstream repository was changed.

The import/validation design is solid. Selections and cursor travel together, invalid cuts fail instead of resampling, seeded() keeps the seed-only path and serialized defaults unchanged, and the recycling cursor now starts from the consumed reference draws. Requesting changes for the two open issues @dreamtalen raised, which are still present at 8629489:

  1. CI compile failure: crates/core/tests/replay_tokenization.rs:308 still builds AgenticSnapshotOptions { seed: 42 } → E0063 in Rust amd64/arm64 and Rust feature modes. AgenticSnapshotOptions::seeded(42) fixes it. This also makes #465/#492 red.
  2. Clock origin of t_star_ms: confirmed. The Weka loader normalizes each play to start at 0 (snapshot_tests.rs asserts Weka first_ms == 0.0 vs Mooncake 10_000.0), while the exporter emits AIPerf's absolute source-clock cut. Details inline. Beyond the rejection case, there is also a silent wrong-cut case.

Non-blocking:

  • Provenance from the exporter only goes to stderr (inline).
  • Heads-up: Dynamo's lib/mocker/src/replay/agentic.rs tests construct AgenticSnapshotOptions { seed: 7 } four times, so the next Dynamo bump needs seeded(7). Its AgenticReplayOptions derives only Clone, so dropping Copy is fine there.

Coordinate downstream Rust callers before publishing this API.

AgenticSnapshotOptions is public. Adding initial_selections and corpus_cursor breaks Rust struct literals that only set seed; serde(default) does not affect Rust construction. The listed ai-dynamo/dynamo callers will fail to compile when they update aisimulate-core. Update them to AgenticSnapshotOptions::seeded(7) or coordinate the migration.

Based on linked-repository findings, this affects ai-dynamo/dynamo/lib/mocker/src/replay/agentic.rs.

automatically written `snapshot-options.json.provenance.json` beside it: it
records the pinned revision, metadata/map/output SHA-256 hashes, root order,
clock basis and each lane's raw cut, origin and converted cut. Both output
paths must be new. For importable JSON on stdout, omit `--output` and provide
`--provenance-out snapshot-provenance.json`; the sidecar is persisted before
anything is printed to stdout.
The exporter verifies the source revision and clean source tree, invokes the
reference `TrajectorySource` directly. It fails on unsupported samplers, timestamp-less trajectories,...

ai-dynamo/dynamo

  • lib/mocker/src/replay/agentic.rs:153,208,264,273 constructs AgenticSnapshotOptions { seed: 7 }. These struct literals will need updating to AgenticSnapshotOptions::seeded(7) once Dynamo consumes the expanded struct. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • Cargo.toml:62 and Cargo.lock:36-39 pin aisimulate-core to 0.13.0-dev.2; Dynamo must update this dependency before consuming the new snapshot-selection and corpus-cursor API. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • lib/bindings/python/rust/llm/replay.rs:320 passes agentic_snapshot through generic pythonize::depythonize, with no field filtering, so the new fields can propagate through this binding once the native dependency supports them. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • docs/fern/pages/reference/components/dynosim-replay-cli-reference.mdx:317-323 documents agentic_snapshot as containing only seed; it should be updated to describe initial_selections and corpus_cursor. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • Existing replay tests at components/src/dynamo/replay/tests/test_agentx_g2.py:357,391,439 use seed-only snapshots, providing downstream legacy-compatibility coverage. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]

ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator

  • No references to agentic_snapshot, AgenticSnapshotOptions, initial_selections, or corpus_cursor were found. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]

80-85: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration

The replay corpus order cannot be established from the supplied excerpts. The exporter records corpus_cursor from root_ids, but the Rust code that constructs and orders the replay corpus is not shown. This evidence is required to determine whether skipped or child plays change the cursor’s index space.

105-108: 🎯 Functional Correctness

The Mooncake clock concern is refuted. into_prepared_snapshots preserves each node’s not_before_ms when it builds recorded intervals and applies imported selections without subtracting an origin. The only normalize_starts() call is outside the snapshot path.

381-382: 🎯 Functional Correctness

The exporter supports the documented flags and output workflow. It validates the required combinations, records clock conversion metadata, writes provenance before publishing the snapshot JSON, and creates the documented sidecar for --output. No documented contract mismatch remains.

Thanks, everything I raised is addressed at c218f11. Approving, assuming the Full CI rerun finishes green.

  • E0063: replay_tokenization.rs now uses AgenticSnapshotOptions::seeded(42).
  • Clock origin: --trace-format is now mandatory. For Weka, the exporter subtracts the earliest request across the root and all child streams, which matches lower_trace's root_time (min t over every stream) used for not_before_ms. Mooncake keeps its source clock. The new end-to-end test sends converted cuts through the real Weka loader and runtime and checks both no rejection and an unchanged historical/frontier split, which covers the silent-shift case.
  • Provenance: the sidecar is durable, carries per-lane clock conversions and the options SHA-256, is required for stdout export, and never overwrites.

The Dynamo mocker AgenticSnapshotOptions { seed: 7 } literals remain a downstream follow-up for their next bump.
