feat(webview): per-view ack, history and profile restore writes (N5, split 5/5 of #1546) - #2237
Split unit N5 of #1546 (per-view ack, history and profile restore writes)
Final unit of the split plan (tracking issue: fork issue 41), on top of N4 (#2236). Completes the pure F1a content.
Scope
postMessageToWebview posts synchronously without awaiting the webview ack, with the per-view state ack wired through the message listener.
History restore (createTaskWithHistoryItemUnlocked, updateTaskHistory) and mode switch (handleModeSwitchUnlocked) keep the per-view buffer/persisted entry authoritative.
Profile activation/delete re-pins the view-local state; handleZooCodeCallback and dispose clean up per-view state without leaking another view's entry.
Focused tests for ack ordering/logging, restored-mode validation and profile-sync behaviour.
Split unit N2 of Zoo-Code-Org#1546: viewStates read/write queue, claim rekey, prune, clear, load/save and export/import sanitization on top of N1 identity. Buffer/mutation/history content remains for N3.
N2 spec now includes the N1 identity tests plus the persistence/load/prune/rekey/export-import coverage; the setValues buffer test moves to the buffer unit.
Final split unit N5: non-awaiting postMessageToWebview with view-state ack, history restore via createTaskWithHistoryItemUnlocked/updateTaskHistory, profile activation/delete re-pin, handleModeSwitchUnlocked and dispose cleanup. Completes the pure F1a content.
View-specific mode and provider profile selections are now saved and restored independently, so separate views can keep their own settings.
Improvements
Task-history mode restoration now applies to the current view without changing shared mode settings.
Settings imports and exports leave out view-specific selections, while other settings continue to be included.
Deleting a provider profile that does not exist now returns a specific not-found error.
This change adds claim-bound persistence for per-view mode and profile selections, applies those selections during task and profile operations, and excludes per-view state from settings transfers. It also changes Git hooks, removes two Husky hooks, and updates webview message dispatch.

Summary
Define and scope persisted view state packages/types/src/global-settings.ts, packages/types/src/vscode-extension-host.ts, src/core/config/ContextProxy.ts, src/core/config/importExport.ts, related tests
Global settings and extension messages now define per-view state and claim fields. Settings import and export omit viewStates.
Register views and persist selections src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts, src/core/config/ContextProxy.ts, src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts, src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.sticky-mode.spec.ts, src/eslint-suppressions.json
ClineProvider assigns view IDs, checks claims, loads and persists local selections, and prunes stored entries. Tests cover ownership, invalid IDs, persistence outcomes, and load races.
Apply view state to task and profile operations src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts, src/core/config/ProviderSettingsManager.ts, src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts, src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.sticky-mode.spec.ts, src/core/config/__tests__/ProviderSettingsManager.spec.ts
Mode and profile operations update view-local state, including task-history restoration and reset. Profile deletion and updates refresh affected views. Missing profiles use a distinct error type.
Webview message dispatch
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Dispatch webview messages without waiting src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts, src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts
Message dispatch no longer waits for renderer acknowledgement. Synchronous errors and rejected dispatch promises are logged.
Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code#2236: Extends earlier per-view persistence with related history-restore and profile-restore writes.
Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code#2227: Introduces the durable view-state map and claim-based registration continued here.
Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code#2235: Adds view-local reads and writes that this change extends to additional state operations.
Merge Risk: Low · up to cb37b
Mode and profile selections can become inconsistent after failed writes, slow operations, profile deletion, or cross-view updates. These issues are bounded and recoverable; merging requires owner acceptance of the remaining selection and display defects.

Explanation
The title names the feature area (webview per-view ack, history and profile restore writes) and matches the main changes in ClineProvider.ts and its tests. It is specific, but it is dense and uses internal split labels (N5, #1546) that do not help a teammate scanning history. It also does not mention the removed git hooks or the settings export and import changes, which are secondary to the main change.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
Changed code leaks provider secrets through the public configuration API. activateProviderProfileUnlocked now stores the full providerSettings object in viewLocalState.apiConfiguration (src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:2886-2893), and profile settings include fields such as apiKey (packages/types/src/provider-settings/anthropic.ts:15-20). ClineProvider.getValues() now merges that nested object (src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:4108-4109). API.getConfiguration() filters only top-level secret keys (src/extension/api.ts:625-628), so a caller can activate a profile and then receive its nested API key and other credentials.
Resolution
Keep credential-bearing apiConfiguration out of ClineProvider.getValues() and all configuration API results. Return only non-secret settings, or explicitly redact every secret field inside nested profile objects before API.getConfiguration() returns them. Add a regression test that activates a profile with an API key and asserts getConfiguration() contains neither apiConfiguration credentials nor any nested secret fields.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
Two changed persistence paths can lose or corrupt state. First, savePersistedViewState commits viewStates before postViewStateClaimToWebview calls void this.postMessageToWebview (ClineProvider.ts:667-682, 736-737). If the webview closes or postMessage rejects, the claim is stored but never delivered. A later launch cannot prove ownership, so the persisted mode/profile becomes inaccessible. Second, profile activation starts several writes in parallel (ClineProvider.ts:2668-2686 and 2884-2896). If the new per-view write in this.setValue("currentApiConfigName", name) fails, other writes can still commit. No rollback restores the profile list, mode mapping, or provider settings, leaving shared state inconsistent.
Resolution
Make claim delivery part of an awaited, retryable persistence workflow. If delivery fails, either retry on the active webview or revoke/mark the stored claim so the entry cannot become permanently unclaimable. Make profile activation transactional: await each write in a controlled sequence or collect all results and restore every already-committed list, current-profile, mode-mapping, provider-settings, and per-view value when any write fails. Add failure tests for webview disposal during claim delivery and for each activation write failing after earlier writes succeed.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template's main sections in substance: it states scope, explicit exclusions, a diff budget, and test evidence (249 ClineProvider.spec.ts tests passed, tsc with 0 errors), and it lists a stack and merge order. It does not link an approved GitHub issue under 'Related GitHub Issue' with a 'Closes:' line; it references a fork tracking issue 41 and #1546 only as 'Refs', which does not satisfy the template's requirement that every PR link an approved issue. It also omits the Test Procedure steps for reviewers, the Pre-Submission Checklist, the Documentation Updates choice, and the Get in Touch entry. The description also does not mention the viewStates schema, export/import exclusion, or the ContextProxy and ProviderSettingsManager changes present in the diff, and it uses terms such as 'ack' and 'F1a' without defining them. It does not follow the Simplified Technical English style the template asks for in several sentences (for example, the compound sentences in the Scope bullets).
Resolution
Add a 'Closes:' line that links an approved GitHub issue, or explain why none applies (the template states every PR must link one). Add a Test Procedure section with reviewer-repeatable steps, such as the exact spec file commands and the tsc command. Complete the Pre-Submission Checklist and state the Documentation Updates choice. Describe the changes to packages/types (viewStateSchema, viewStates, viewStateClaim fields), the export exclusion in ContextProxy, the import skip in importExport.ts, and the new ProviderSettingsNotFoundError. Define 'ack', 'F1a', and 'N5' or link to where they are defined. Rewrite long compound sentences into short sentences that follow Simplified Technical English.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
Changed profile lifecycle behavior lacks focused coverage. The PR adds profile deletion cleanup and per-view re-pinning in ClineProvider.deleteProviderProfile (including typed missing-profile handling, surviving-profile resolution, and view-local state updates at lines 2725-2817), but no test invokes deleteProviderProfile. The PR also changes handleZooCodeCallback to update existing inactive Zoo Gateway profiles through upsertProviderProfile(..., false) at lines 3028-3065; its tests cover only creation when no profile exists and the outer failure path (lines 6880-6926).
Resolution
Add focused ClineProvider tests for deleting an active and a view-pinned profile, missing-secret and unexpected-error branches, shared/view-local state and durable pin cleanup, plus multiple live views. Add a callback test with existing active and inactive Zoo Gateway profiles that verifies updated tokens, base URLs, and activation flags.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
handleModeSwitchUnlocked can continue after cancellation. enqueueProviderProfileMutation aborts its AbortController when the 30-second timeout fires (ClineProvider.ts:299-317), but this PR removes the abort checks before and after getModeConfigId/listConfig (the base had them). If either lookup stalls past the timeout, the caller receives cancellation while the underlying operation later updates listApiConfigMeta, activates a profile or writes a mode association, and posts state. This performs changed mode-switch work after cancellation.
Resolution
Restore signal?.aborted checks after the workspace-lock branch and after the asynchronous profile lookups. Check the signal before each subsequent state write, profile activation, mode-config write, and webview post. Add a regression test where a lookup stalls past PENDING_OPERATION_TIMEOUT_MS, then resolves, and verify that no post-cancellation mutation or post-state dispatch occurs.

src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:2361 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚖️ Poor tradeoff
Move the TaskModeSwitched emit and _taskMode update after the per-view write.
TaskModeSwitched fires and _taskMode changes before the per-view setValue("mode") write. If that write fails, the error propagates, but the event and task mode stay changed. Observers see a rejected switch, and a reload restores the previous view selection. Reordering is not verified safe, so no diff is proposed. Check ModeChanged and profile-activation ordering before changing it.

src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:2898-2900 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Refresh sibling view buffers when a profile changes.
getConfiguration() reads the sidebar view's buffer through getValues(), and the buffer overrides the shared store. The buffer keeps a copy of profile P's apiConfiguration from loadViewState(). When another view activates or saves P, the sidebar buffer is not updated, so getConfiguration() can return the old P settings.
The sibling-refresh comments at src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:2898-2900 and in the activation branch of persistProviderProfile describe a refresh that the code does not perform. The save-only branch at lines 2702-2716 refreshes only the pinned current view.
Do not replace the buffer with shared-store values. Each view keeps its own pinned profile in that buffer. Instead, refresh the buffered apiConfiguration of every other live view that holds P when P is saved or activated. Alternatively, resolve the buffered profile from providerSettingsManager when getConfiguration() runs. Update the comments to match the behavior that is implemented. The comments that say getState() is shadowed are inaccurate, because getState() reads the shared store.

src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:4108-4110 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | 💤 Low value
Restored history mode is missing from the posted state during restore.
History restore now writes the mode only to the view buffer. Profile activation then posts state before the restored task exists, so the webview receives the pre-restore shared mode until a later post. The base wrote the shared mode before this post, so the stale window is new.
This changes only the posted mode field. getState() and profile binding stay unchanged, and an active task keeps precedence through currentTaskMode.

it checks viewLocalState.mode after currentTaskMode and before the shared mode

Assert the restored mode in the deleted-mode sticky-mode test.
The PR removes the only assertion on the fallback slug during history restore. The remaining test, should handle mode deletion between sessions, checks only that createTaskWithHistoryItem resolves and that handleModeSwitch is not called with "deleted-mode". If the fallback were removed, historyItem.mode would stay "deleted-mode" and this test would still pass.
The suggested assertion must not use defaultModeSlug as a bare identifier. The sticky-mode spec does not import it. Use the literal "code", which matches this spec's mocked defaultModeSlug.

// Verify mode switch was not called with deleted mode
expect(handleModeSwitchSpy).not.toHaveBeenCalledWith("deleted-mode")

Restore the cache only when no newer same-key write exists.
The catch in updateGlobalState restores previousCachedValue without checking for a newer write to the same key. If an earlier write A to a key rejects after a later write B to that key has set the cache, the cache can hold the value from before A. Storage holds B's value, so the cache is stale. Later reads and state posts can use that stale value.
Two providers can issue overlapping mode writes. The sidebar and tab providers share the ContextProxy singleton. Each provider has its own providerProfileMutationQueue, so no queue orders writes across providers. Within one provider, handleModeSwitch runs its write through enqueueProviderProfileMutation. That queue does not cover the other provider.
Track a write generation per key. Restore the cache only when the failed write is still the newest one:

Keep open views' entries when pruning persisted view states.
prunePersistedViewStates keeps the 50 entries with the newest updatedAt. It does not check whether an entry's view is still open. An open view that does not change its mode or profile does not refresh its updatedAt. Its entry is removed once 50 other views have written entries newer than its last write. Each view has one key, so repeated writes from a single view do not evict another view's entry. After reload, the open view loads no persisted mode or profile and falls back to the shared values.
Exclude entries whose viewStateId belongs to a live instance from the 50-entry cutoff. The cap then applies only to closed-view entries. The stored map can hold at most one extra entry per open view.

Update ClineProvider.prunePersistedViewStates to retain entries whose
viewStateId belongs to a live instance, and apply MAX_PERSISTED_VIEW_STATES only
to the newest closed-view entries. Return the combined open and capped closed
entries.

Drop the unconditional shared-mode rollback in handleModeSwitchUnlocked.
The catch at ClineProvider.ts:2387-2395 writes previousMode back to shared state without checking the current value. setValue already runs a value-guarded restore for this case, and that guard is bypassed here. If another provider writes a different mode while this provider's per-view write is in flight, and that write fails, the unconditional rollback overwrites the other provider's mode. The guard in _restoreSharedValuesAfterFailedViewWrite exists to prevent exactly this. Remove the second rollback and keep the setValue call, which restores only when the shared value still holds the attempted mode.
🐛 Suggested fix

Remove the unconditional shared-mode rollback in handleModeSwitchUnlocked’s
persistence-failure catch. Keep the setValue("mode", newMode) call and its
existing guarded restore behavior; do not write previousMode directly through
contextProxy, so another provider’s concurrent mode update is preserved.

Restore the abort guards around the mode config reads.
When the provider-profile mutation timeout aborts the handleModeSwitch signal during getModeConfigId or listConfig, the flow still reaches activateProviderProfileUnlocked. That function persists the selected profile through providerSettingsManager.activateProfile before its own abort check runs. The stored profile can then differ from the API handler that the running task uses. The task handler is not rebuilt and the webview state is not refreshed on this path.
Restore both guards removed in this hunk. The pre-read guard stops the reads. The post-read guard stops the activation path before updateGlobalState and getProfile. Those awaits still run after the guard, so an abort during them can still reach activateProfile, as it can at the merge base.
The trigger needs the 30-second mutation timeout to fire before the post-read guard, which is uncommon for local reads. The result is a recoverable selection mismatch, not a blocked workflow. The next activation or profile reselection rebuilds the handler and refreshes the state.

// Update listApiConfigMeta first to ensure UI has latest data.
await this.updateGlobalState("listApiConfigMeta", listApiConfig)
This restores the merge-base behavior for the read-timeout case.

Restore abort checks in handleModeSwitch: return before getModeConfigId and
listConfig when signal is already aborted, then check again after both reads and
before updateGlobalState and the activation path. Preserve the existing behavior
of awaits after that second guard.

Update the manager's stored current profile when deleting the active profile.
deleteConfig removes the profile but leaves currentApiConfigName set to the deleted name. Export writes that stale name to the settings file. On import, the file's profile list no longer contains it, so the importer selects the first remaining profile, not the surviving selection. Update the manager's current profile to the survivor during deletion, for example with activateProfile, when the deleted name matches.

In the profile deletion flow around `deleteConfig`, update the manager’s current
profile when `profileToDelete.name` matches the active profile: activate the
surviving profile so `currentApiConfigName` no longer references the deleted
profile. Leave the current selection unchanged when deleting an inactive
profile.
