feat(webview): per-view view-state identity and host-minted claim token (N1, split 1/3 of #1546) - #2226
Split unit N1 of #1546 (F1a — per-view view-state identity)
Part of the split plan recorded in the tracking issue (fork issue 41): #1546 mixed per-view identity, the durable viewStates pipeline, buffer/mutation behaviour, plus F0 (button targeting) and F3 (mode/profile write) content. This unit carries only the identity contract; F0 content stays in #1528 and F3 content in #1560.
Scope (contract point)
viewId (renderContext + per-instance counter) and viewStateId identity, including __proto__/non-string/oversized/live-claim guards in setViewStateId.
Host-minted claimToken binding: viewStateClaim/viewStateId message payloads, rebindUnboundViewStateEntry, postViewStateClaimToWebview, and the persisted viewStateSchema/viewStates record.
Claim-less legacy entries are adopted only through the re-bind path; a live or mismatched claim is refused.
Each webview now saves and restores its own mode and selected provider profile, allowing separate views to retain different settings.
View settings can be restored when a view is reopened, while settings changed in one view remain separate from other views.
Bug Fixes
Deleting a provider configuration that doesn’t exist now returns a specific not-found error.
Invalid or conflicting view-state registrations are prevented from restoring another view’s saved selections.
The provider now persists mode and selected-profile state per webview using claim-bound IDs. The change adds schema and message fields, registration and loading logic, related tests, and a typed error for deleting a missing provider profile.
Changes: Claim-bound per-view state
Layer / File(s)
Summary
View-state contract and provider identity packages/types/src/global-settings.ts, packages/types/src/vscode-extension-host.ts, src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts, packages/types/src/__tests__/*
The global settings schema adds per-view records, and host messages add view-state ID and claim fields. Each provider initializes a unique view ID and buffers local state. Tests cover schema parsing and global-state keys.
Claim validation and persisted ID registration src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts, src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts, src/core/config/ContextProxy.ts
The provider reads, writes, rebinds, and prunes persisted entries. It validates IDs and claims, handles temporary IDs and concurrent registration, then sends the stored claim to the webview. Tests cover claim ownership, legacy entries, and registration failures. ContextProxy excludes viewStates from settings exports.
Local selections and state loading src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts
The provider saves mode and profile selections, buffers provider settings locally, and loads validated saved selections while preserving changes made during asynchronous lookup.
Typed missing-profile deletion error
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Typed error from profile deletion src/core/config/ProviderSettingsManager.ts, src/core/config/__tests__/ProviderSettingsManager.spec.ts
Deleting an absent profile now throws ProviderSettingsNotFoundError without wrapping it. The test checks the error type and message.
Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code#2237: Its acknowledgement, history restore, profile restore, and cleanup writes use the view-local buffer and persisted viewStates added here.
Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code#2236: Its batch writes and reset cleanup depend on the view-local buffer, viewStateId, and viewStates contract added here.
Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code#2227: It continues the durable pipeline with serialization, persistence, re-keying, and claim handling for viewStates.

Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
The export leak is fixed, but the changed viewStates schema still makes imported claim tokens authoritative. packages/types/src/global-settings.ts:120-141 accepts claimToken and registers viewStates in globalSettingsSchema. The existing importer iterates every schema key, accepts the entry at src/core/config/importExport.ts:99-120, and stores it with contextProxy.setValues at src/core/config/importExport.ts:218-231. A malicious settings file can therefore add an arbitrary claim token for a view ID. ClineProvider.setViewStateId then treats that imported token as a valid stored claim at src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:869-903; a view that presents the attacker-chosen token can adopt the entry and load the selected profile at src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:5281-5288. ContextProxy now omits viewStates from exports, so the standing export-disclosure claim is addressed, but imported claim tokens remain trusted.
Resolution
Exclude viewStates from settings imports, or sanitize imported entries by removing claimToken and treating every imported entry as unbound before storage. Only a token minted by the extension host during the rebind/write path may authorize setViewStateId; an imported token must never satisfy the claim check.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
The prior persistence failure remains in the changed claim-bound path. savePersistedViewState writes the entry and awaits contextProxy.setValue, then calls postViewStateClaimToWebview without awaiting it (ClineProvider.ts:664-680). That helper discards the promise (733-735), while postMessageToWebview silently resolves when no view exists or the view is disposed (1925-1934). A pre-launch saveViewState can therefore persist a mode/profile and claim without delivering the claim. On the next registration, setViewStateId rejects a missing claim (895-902), so the persisted selections become stranded and cannot be restored.
Resolution
Make claim delivery part of the persistence lifecycle. Defer or retry delivery until the webview is ready, and report delivery failure. Alternatively, remove or roll back a newly stored claim-bound entry when delivery fails. Ensure registration can retry after a failed delivery.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
The previous regression finding remains unresolved. ClineProvider.setViewStateId adds changed guards for runtime non-string values at lines 822-827, empty or whitespace-only normalized IDs at lines 829-840, and IDs longer than 64 characters at lines 845-850. The focused tests cover only "__proto__" for these input guards at ClineProvider.spec.ts:3582-3602; no focused test exercises the non-string, empty/whitespace, or oversized paths.
Resolution
Add focused ClineProvider tests for runtime non-string input, an empty ID, a whitespace-only ID, and an ID longer than 64 characters. For each case, assert that viewStateId remains the temporary ID, viewStates is not persisted or mutated, and no viewStateClaim message is emitted.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
The changed view-state write queue has a lifecycle leak. ClineProvider.persistedViewStateWriteQueue is a static promise chain, and savePersistedViewState, clearPersistedViewState, rebindUnboundViewStateEntry, and rekeyPersistedViewStateEntry enqueue closures that capture this and call contextProxy.setValue without disposal checks (ClineProvider.ts:241, 619-724, 764-804). dispose() marks _disposed and removes the provider, but it never cancels or drains this queue (ClineProvider.ts:1269-1329). If a write is slow and the view is closed or replaced, queued work still retains the disposed provider and can persist state after disposal. postMessageToWebview prevents some message delivery, but it does not prevent the queued persistence or provider retention.
Resolution
Make view-state queue work lifecycle-aware. Mark the provider cancelled at the start of dispose() with a generation or abort signal. Check cancellation before each queued closure, after awaited persistence, before state mutation, and before claim delivery. Skip or reject queued work for a disposed provider, and ensure callbacks cannot post to a replacement view. If disposal must drain work, await only this provider’s pending operations without blocking unrelated providers.

Add a positive test for an already claim-bearing entry.
The current tests do not accept a matching claim for an entry that still contains selections. Add that case and assert the viewStateId plus unchanged persisted selections. Do not assert viewLocalState restoration or posted state: setViewStateId does not call loadViewState, and _clearViewLocalState has no callers.

- omit viewStates (host-minted claim tokens) from settings export
- keep a pre-launch selection when registration re-keys onto an existing stable entry
- narrow saveViewState keys to the durable per-view subset
- skip rollback when another provider wrote a newer shared value
- restore the ContextProxy cache when globalState.update rejects

Add a test that ContextProxy.export() omits viewStates.
No current test calls ContextProxy.export() and asserts that viewStates is absent from the result. Removing the viewStates: true exclusion from globalSettingsExportSchema can leave the current suite passing. Claim tokens are stored in viewStates, so a regression there could expose them in exported settings. Add a test in src/core/config/__tests__/ContextProxy.spec.ts that seeds viewStates through setValue, calls export(), and asserts that the viewStates key is absent.

Add a test for ContextProxy.export() that seeds viewStates via setValue, exports
the settings, and asserts the result does not contain the viewStates key; retain
the export exclusion for viewStates.
Test the stable-entry merge through setViewStateId, not the private helper.
The new test calls rekeyPersistedViewStateEntry directly and checks only the stored map. Registration through setViewStateId("stable-view", "host-token") does not run in this test, so a regression in its claim check or re-key call would not fail it. Registration does not load the active mode into viewLocalState, so this test should not assert a loaded mode. It should assert the adopted viewStateId and the persisted entry.
