feat(ui): add interface, terminal, editor font size and spacing settings - #2224
This PR adds font size and spacing settings to the UI tab.
Settings
Interface font size (50-200%), Terminal font size (8-32 px), Editor font size (8-32 px), and Spacing density (50-200%). Each has a stepper and a reset.
A live preview that follows the steppers before the user presses Save.
How it works
Each value maps to one CSS variable on <html>. A value that is not set removes the override, so the stylesheet default applies.
With nothing set, the layout and the sizes of code, diff, and terminal blocks do not change. The editor size reaches the diff view only while a value is set (a class on <html>).
The preview sets each unset value to initial. A value saved on <html> cannot leak into the preview, so a reset shows before Save. The preview uses the same fallbacks as the live UI.
Review notes
The four settings go through the updateSettings message. Reset values are sent as null so that they clear the stored value.
The review gate flagged that the four values were part of a save that was not atomic. The save pipeline changes below fix that. See "Save pipeline changes".
Most of the diff is the 17 locale files. Only the ui.appearance strings are added.
Save pipeline changes
The "Persistence Integrity" check reported that the four appearance values are saved in a loop that can stop half way. A failed write left some values stored and the rest not, and the webview could not tell. The changes below fix that, and nothing else about how settings are applied. The API configuration, telemetry, and debug messages are sent immediately, exactly as before, and every side effect of a setting runs in the same place as before.
webviewMessageHandler.ts, updateSettings: the four appearance values (interfaceFontScale, terminalFontSize, editorFontSize, spacingScale) are saved all-or-nothing. Each is recorded, with the value it had, right before it is written. If a write fails, the ones this save already stored are put back in reverse order, and so is the one whose own write failed, in case it changed the stored value before failing. The store is shared by the sidebar and the editor tab, so saves can overlap. The writes to one key form a chain. A write is put back only while it is the latest one and the stored value is still what it wrote, so a newer save's value, and a change made outside a save (an import), are kept. A write that fails while a newer one is pending is taken out of the chain, so if the newer one fails too, it restores what was stored before either of them, in whichever order they fail. Writes of one appearance value run one at a time, from every save and every rollback and across providers, and each stays in line until it has reached durable storage, so a slower write cannot complete after a newer one and overwrite it. A write that fails does not hold up the ones behind it. Writes that have finished are taken out of the chain, so nothing is kept about them once the saves are over. The result is posted as settingsSaveResult (success or the error), also when the state refresh fails, and the refresh runs after the values were put back.
The four appearance values are validated in the extension host, with the schemas they are defined with (an integer within its bounds, or null for a reset), before any side effect runs or any setting is stored. An invalid value changes nothing, not even the valid settings sent with it. The save fails with an error and the webview is told. The webview is not trusted: the stepper's limits do not bind a message that was written by hand. Other settings are not checked, as before.
A failure while writing any other setting follows the existing error path, as before, with one addition: the webview is told the save failed (it is waiting for the result), and then the error is rethrown. No error is shown for it, as before. Every other setting is written exactly as before, and the loop itself is unchanged.
The error shown for a failed appearance save does not claim a full restore: it says some settings may be left partly changed.
Not part of the transaction, on purpose: every other setting, and the side effects that run in place while saving (the language, speech, the terminal settings, the command lists in VS Code configuration, the MCP servers, the destructive command guard install). They behave as before and are not undone by a failed save.
SettingsView.tsx: only a save that changes an appearance value waits for the host's answer. For that save, Save is disabled while it is pending, and the "unsaved changes" flag clears only when the host reports success, so a failed save keeps the edits and can be retried. An edit made while it is pending keeps the flag. Request ids (saveRequestId.ts) combine a per-load id with a counter, so an answer from an earlier mount or before a reload cannot match a later save. Every other save behaves exactly as before: no request id, nothing to wait for, and the flag is cleared at once. The existing SettingsView tests for those saves are unchanged.
packages/types: the settingsSaveResult message type. common.json (18 locales): errors.settings_save_failed, shown when a save is rolled back.
Test Procedure
pnpm check-types passes in webview-ui, src, and packages/types.
Webview tests pass. New tests cover the appearance save and reset, the ExtensionStateContext hydrate and update path, and the save result flow (success, failure, edit during a save, late answers).
Extension tests cover the all-or-nothing save (restore order, a newer value is kept, a failing restore, no request id, a failed state refresh).
A Playwright snapshot covers the preview in four themes, with set values and with a reset while <html> holds saved values.
Manual: open Settings > UI. Change each value. Check the preview. Press Save. Check the chat. Reset each value.
Customize interface and chat font scaling, chat spacing, terminal text size, and editor text size in Appearance settings.
Preview appearance changes before saving, and reset individual settings to their defaults.
Appearance settings are available across supported languages.
Bug Fixes
Appearance saves now confirm whether changes were saved; failed saves display an error and keep changes available to retry.
The change adds four configurable appearance settings, exposes controls and a live preview, and applies values to webview styles. Appearance saves now use request IDs and host acknowledgements, with validation and conditional rollback for eligible failed writes.

Summary
Appearance contract and state packages/types/src/global-settings.ts, packages/types/src/vscode-extension-host.ts, src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts, webview-ui/src/context/ExtensionStateContext.tsx, related tests
The schema and extension/webview state carry four nullable appearance values. The context applies them to root CSS variables and clears overrides when values are unset.
Appearance variables and display webview-ui/src/utils/appearance.ts, webview-ui/src/index.css, webview-ui/src/components/chat/*, webview-ui/src/components/common/*, visual fixtures and tests, webview-ui/playwright/gallery/stories.tsx
The appearance utility clamps values and updates CSS variables. Styles and chat, Markdown, code, diff, and terminal components consume those variables. Visual tests cover configured and unset styles.
Controls and preview webview-ui/src/components/settings/NumberStepper.tsx, webview-ui/src/components/settings/UISettings.tsx, webview-ui/src/components/settings/AppearancePreview.tsx, related tests, webview-ui/src/i18n/locales/*/settings.json, knip.json
The settings view adds numeric controls and a preview for the four appearance values. Tests cover editing, reset behavior, persistence, telemetry, and preview styles. Translations add control and preview text across supported locales.
Request-correlated save flow webview-ui/src/components/settings/SettingsView.tsx, webview-ui/src/components/settings/saveRequestId.ts, webview-ui/src/components/settings/__tests__/saveAcknowledgement.ts, related tests, packages/types/src/vscode-extension-host.ts
Appearance edits include request IDs in updateSettings messages. The view waits for a matching result and clears dirty state only after success when the submitted state remains current. Other saves clear dirty state immediately.
Host validation and rollback src/core/webview/webviewMessageHandler.ts, src/core/webview/__tests__/webviewMessageHandler.spec.ts, src/i18n/locales/*/common.json
The host validates appearance values before processing updates. It conditionally rolls back eligible appearance writes after failures, logs rollback and refresh errors, and returns request-correlated results. Locales add settings-save failure messages.

Explanation
[#2222] Requirements and evidence from the whole-PR summary:
Four UI-tab settings, each with a stepper and reset: UISettings renders a NumberStepper for interfaceFontScale, terminalFontSize, editorFontSize, and spacingScale. Reset passes undefined, and the webview sends null to clear the stored value.
Limits of 50-200% and 8-32 px: the schema in packages/types/src/global-settings.ts sets these bounds. appearance.ts clamps to the same bounds. updateSettings validates them in the extension host before any write.
Live preview before Save: AppearancePreview applies unsaved values. Each unset value uses initial, so a reset shows before Save. This meets the reset-in-preview criterion.
Unset values keep the current look: applyAppearanceVariables removes the CSS override. The stylesheet defaults apply. CodeBlock, TerminalOutput, MarkdownBlock, and ChatRow use fallbacks when the variables are unset. The editor class on <html> is set only when a value is set.
Terminal output at 18 px: TerminalOutput reads --zoo-terminal-font-size. This meets the first acceptance criterion.
Clearing a value returns preview and chat to the default: reset maps to null and initial in the preview. This meets the second criterion.
No value set means no size change: the summary lists fallback values that match the previous sizes. The visual and unit tests reported for the consumers cover this.
Keyboard and assistive technology: NumberStepper uses buttons, arrow keys, and a numeric input that shows the current value. The summary reports stepper tests for this behavior.
Translations: settings.json adds ui.appearance strings in 18 locales. common.json adds errors.settings_save_failed in 18 locales. Translation text was not read in this pass.
The verdict uses the whole-PR summary. No source file was re-read for this assessment. Behavior claims for keyboard access and visual defaults rely on the reported tests and summary.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes stay connected to [#2222], which asks for these four settings to save, reset, and preview reliably.
Schema, ExtensionState, ClineProvider state, ExtensionStateContext, UISettings, SettingsView, AppearancePreview, NumberStepper, appearance.ts, index.css variables, and consumers implement the issue directly.
The save transaction in updateSettings, the per-key write chains, rollback, request IDs, and settingsSaveResult act only on the four appearance keys. The PR text states this scope. Other settings keep immediate writes and their side effects. The only change to their path is a failure notice sent to the webview when a request ID exists. The error is still rethrown.
settingWriteBookkeepingSize() and the Knip __tests__ exclusion support the tests.
Translations and the settings_save_failed string are needed for the new UI and error text.
The save pipeline is large relative to the issue, which does not ask for atomic or ordered saves. It does not add an unrelated feature. No demonstrated unrelated change was found.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
Focused coverage now exists for the changed appearance pipeline. ClineProvider.spec.ts checks all four keys in both getState() and getStateToPostToWebview(), including stored, unset, null-reset, combined, and invalid values. Handler, schema, context, utility, stepper, preview, and save-result tests cover success, rollback, validation, unset, and failure paths. Playwright snapshots cover the settings UI, preview, and all changed chat/code/diff/terminal consumers across four themes. Prior failure addressed: ClineProvider.spec.ts now asserts all four appearance keys through both state methods for stored values, unset values, and null resets, resolving the prior provider-mapping coverage gap.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No concrete security-boundary violation is introduced. In src/core/webview/webviewMessageHandler.ts:865-875, the four new webview-supplied appearance values are validated against bounded integer schemas before side effects or storage. In webview-ui/src/utils/appearance.ts:63-84, CSS values are finite, rounded, and clamped before insertion. The remaining changes only propagate settings, render fixed UI text, or apply numeric CSS variables. No changed path leaks secrets or PII, executes unvalidated input, or bypasses approval or allowlist controls.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
No changed lifecycle leak is established. The new SettingsView message listener is removed in the effect cleanup, including unmounts. The shared appearance-write queue removes each key after its tail settles. Completed writes delete the latest entry and unlink both links; rollback does the same. Added tests cover unmount handling and zero bookkeeping after successful, failed, and overlapping saves. Prior failure addressed: finishSettingWrite now deletes completed latest entries and unlinks writes; undoSettingWrite unlinks rollback entries; queue tails delete their keys after settlement. Tests assert zero retained writes and queues.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
A changed appearance-save path can still lose a successful overlapping save. updateSettings captures previous from ContextProxy.getValue at line 897, before queuedSettingWrite starts the forward write at lines 1007-1023. ContextProxy.updateGlobalState updates its cache before durable globalState.update completes (ContextProxy.ts:368-369). If save A writes 120 and save B is started immediately, B can capture the old 100 before A reaches the cache. A then succeeds and is unlinked without updating B.previous. If B's durable write fails after setting the cache to 150, undoSettingWrite (lines 237-240) restores B.previous, 100, and overwrites A's successful durable value of 120. The independent message callbacks allow this overlap (ClineProvider.ts:1754-1760). The new queue fixes completion-order inversion, but the rollback predecessor snapshot remains incorrect for this triggering scenario. The added ordering tests wait until the first value is stored before starting the second save, so they do not cover this race.
Resolution
Capture the effective predecessor inside the per-key write queue, after the preceding queued write has reached durable storage, or otherwise update each pending write's predecessor when its prior write succeeds. A failed later save must restore the latest successful value, not a stale pre-queue cache value. Add a regression test that starts two same-key saves in the same tick and makes the second durable write fail after its cache update; assert that the first value remains persisted.

Do not skip the hub call solely because the value was previously applied. Saves received during an active hub call may coalesce into one subsequent call with the latest value; keep calls serialized and do not introduce retries without another save. Resolving the two pre-merge errors together in 394bb68, by narrowing this PR to what the four appearance values need.
Out of Scope Changes: removed everything that was about other settings: the MCP reconcile loop, the destructive command guard timeout, the command-list, terminal, language and speech snapshots (and the getLanguage / getTtsEnabled / getTtsSpeed getters), and the save queue across providers. webviewMessageHandler.ts is now +49/−2 and the loop is not touched. Every setting is applied exactly where and how it was before. The extension changed-line count went from 183 to 60.
Persistence Integrity: the transaction now covers stored values only. If a write fails, the values already stored by this save are put back in reverse order, and only while a key still holds what this save wrote. That rule replaces the queue: a value stored meanwhile by another save is left alone, and a hung side effect can no longer block anyone else's save. The result is always posted, also when the state refresh fails. The MCP finding is gone with the code it was about: the hub is called in the same place as before, not from a loop that outlives the save. The previous gate findings about side effects (language, speech, terminal, command lists, the hub) described the extra undo machinery, which no longer exists. This PR does not undo side effects that ran before a failed write, and the description says so. If a maintainer wants that, it is a follow-up, one setting at a time.
Tests: restore order, a newer value is kept, a key with no earlier value is cleared, a failing restore, a failure that is not an Error, no request id, no settings, empty experiments and customSupportPrompts, and a failing state refresh. Changed lines in the handler are fully covered, and the compare rule is covered by a test that fails without it.

src/core/webview/webviewMessageHandler.ts:861-865 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Decouple the Save acknowledgement from the MCP refresh.
Every updateSettings submission from SettingsView includes mcpEnabled (webview-ui/src/components/settings/SettingsView.tsx:449). The save handler awaits mcpHub.handleMcpEnabledChange() before it writes mcpEnabled (src/core/webview/webviewMessageHandler.ts:859-865, write at 881). It posts settingsSaveResult after that await (around line 915). The new pendingSaveId gate keeps Save disabled and the unsaved flag set until that result arrives (SettingsView.tsx:498-515, 744). An appearance-only change therefore keeps Save busy for the full MCP refresh.
The await predates this PR. The PR makes the wait visible in the Save control.
The hub catches its own errors (src/services/mcp/McpHub.ts:2450-2496), so the wait delays the result. It does not produce a save failure. The total refresh time has no single bound. Each server connect has its own timeout, 60 s by default (McpHub.ts:2237-2244). The disable-branch close awaits have no timeout (McpHub.ts:1574-1600).
Requested change: Send settingsSaveResult after the settings writes complete, without waiting for handleMcpEnabledChange(). Keep the mcpEnabled storage write before the success result. Keep calling handleMcpEnabledChange() for every submitted mcpEnabled value, including unchanged values. Do not skip unchanged values.
Run the MCP refresh as separately ordered side-effect work. A refresh that starts while another is in flight returns early (McpHub.ts:1811-1814). The ordering must therefore not drop a later submission's refresh. Choose that ordering before changing this path.

Sync the guard setting from the saved result before clearing the unsaved flag.
When the destructive command guard install fails during save, the host stores destructiveCommandGuardEnabled as false and still reports settingsSaveResult with success: true. SettingsView clears the unsaved flag but keeps the submitted true in cachedState. The guard toggle then shows enabled while the stored value is disabled, and no unsaved change is shown. This mismatch predates this PR. The base has the same install-failure normalization and clears the unsaved flag at save time.
Prefer adding the normalized value to the settingsSaveResult message. The host can send the persisted destructiveCommandGuardEnabled value in that message, and the listener can apply it to cachedState when no edit happened during the save. Reading the value from extensionState in the listener would not work. That listener's effect depends only on pendingSaveId, so it can read a stale state.
Note: this behaviour predates this PR (already present at merge base 0e208c443b56); the change keeps it reachable.

Assert persisted mcpEnabled values in the MCP enable and disable tests.
The MCP enable and disable tests check the McpHub call and the state post. They do not check the contextProxy.setValue("mcpEnabled", ...) write. Removing that write would leave these tests passing. The handler's unset case (value ?? true) is also not checked for persistence. The repository requires focused persistence tests for true and false/unset cases on persisted settings in src/core/webview/**. This test gap is a violation of that testing requirement. The current handler does persist the value, so this does not indicate a production persistence failure.
Add the matching persistence assertion to the disable test, and add a case where mcpEnabled is unset to cover the default.

## Visual Tests (Playwright Story Gallery)
### When a UI change needs a snapshot
If your PR changes anything a user would notice at a glance — layout, spacing, theme tokens, brand elements, gradients, mask/blur effects, hover/empty/error states — **add a `*.visual.tsx` snapshot to the same PR**. Do not attach screenshots to the PR description as evidence; commit the baseline instead so future PRs get regression coverage automatically.
Out of Scope Changes: done as suggested. The rollback now covers only the four appearance keys. Every other key is written as before, and a failure while writing one is handled as before. A test checks a non-appearance value written before a failing appearance value is not put back, and that the failure is still reported.
Persistence Integrity: the failed key is now restored along with the earlier ones (it is recorded before it is written), and the check that decides whether to put a key back is a per-write marker, not value equality. I did not change ContextProxy: if globalState.update rejects after the cache was updated, the failed key is put back by the same restore, through ContextProxy.setValue, and a test covers a write that changes the stored value and then fails. I also did not add snapshots for allowedCommands and deniedCommands. They are not appearance values, so they are outside the rollback, and their write path is unchanged.

Add a test where an earlier save's same-key write finishes after a later save's write.
The three deferred tests in "two saves at once" hold terminalFontSize or editorFontSize. None holds interfaceFontScale. No test checks writer-token ordering for a late interfaceFontScale write.
webviewMessageHandler.ts:898-904 stores the writer token before await provider.contextProxy.setValue(...). If that assignment moved after the await, save A's late interfaceFontScale write could take the token from save B. If A then failed, it would restore 100 and overwrite B's 150. Under that change, the three existing deferred tests still end with their asserted values, so they would not detect it. The current code behaves correctly. This is a recommended test-coverage refactor, not a production defect.
Add a test with this sequence:
Save A starts. Its interfaceFontScale: 120 write stores the value at call time, but its promise stays pending.
Save B writes interfaceFontScale: 150 and finishes.
Release A. A fails on terminalFontSize.
interfaceFontScale must still be 150.
failWriteOf does not store its value on a match, so it cannot model step 1. The diff adds a holdWriteOf helper beside it.

Learning: Persistence integrity: Fail only when a concrete changed persistence path can lose or corrupt state because an operation is not awaited, a write is non-atomic, rollback or explicit partial-failure behavior is missing, or a persisted default is not propagated to a consumer. Cite the changed path and a plausible triggering scenario; pass when no such changed path exists.
Out of Scope: a failure while writing any key that is not an appearance value now follows the existing error path: after the appearance values were put back and the webview was told, the error is rethrown, with no toast. A test checks it rejects, that the appearance value is restored, that the result is posted as failed, and that no toast is shown. A failure of an appearance value does not reject; it is reported to the user.
Persistence Integrity:ContextProxy is not changed. The cache of a failed write is put back through ContextProxy.setValue, and a test covers a write that changes the stored value and then fails. The save also does not claim more than it does: the failure text no longer says the settings were restored, it says some may be left partly changed (all 18 locales). Making every setting transactional across all persistence targets is not what this PR is for.
Regression Evidence: the UISettings test for a reset recorded as a null value, and a real-browser test for every consumer of the appearance values (set and removed, in all four themes), were pushed in ee7205a. This report predates them.

Re the latest pre-merge findings (d9688f4, with baselines from 47ceffe).
Security Boundaries: the four appearance values are now validated in the extension host before anything else happens, with the schemas they are defined with (globalSettingsSchema: an integer within its bounds, or null/unset for a reset). An invalid value changes nothing: no side effect runs (a test sends the destructive command guard install with it and checks it is not called) and no setting is stored, not even the valid ones sent with it. The save fails, the user gets an error, and the webview is told. The error does not echo the invalid value. Tests cover each key with values below and above the bounds, zero, negative, fractional, NaN, infinite, a string, a boolean, an object and an array, plus both bounds and a reset (null) being accepted. Removing the check fails 45 of them. I did not add a whitelist for every other key of updatedSettings: that message carries hundreds of settings, and it is not what this PR changes.
Out of Scope Changes: I kept the behaviour for a failure on a non-appearance key: the webview is told the save failed and the error is rethrown, with no toast, which is the existing error path plus the result message. The settings view sends every setting on each save and waits for the result, so without that message the Save button would wait forever. The behaviour is defined in the PR description and covered by a test (a failing non-appearance write rejects, the appearance values are put back, the result is posted, and no toast is shown).
Persistence Integrity: unchanged from my earlier answer. I did not change ContextProxy (it would change how every setting is cached). A rollback that fails is logged, and the toast says some settings may be left partly changed.
Regression Evidence: the consumer browser test now also asserts the CodeBlock size, and takes a screenshot per theme for the default state (before applying, and again after removing the values) and the configured state. The 8 baselines come from CI, and the Visual Regression workflow was green. ChatRow is not in the fixture: it needs a lot of context to render, and it uses the same spacing class as the queued messages that are covered.
Line 63 of AppearanceConsumers.visual.tsx asserts the computed font-size of the code block. This is a behavioral assertion. The project rule keeps those in Vitest. The ordinary pnpm test run excludes *.visual.tsx files, and no Vitest test checks the code block's editor font size. The webview-visual job still runs this assertion on pull requests, so a regression is caught there, not by the ordinary suite.
As per coding guidelines, keep behavioral assertions in Vitest. A *.visual.tsx test should establish a deterministic state and make a focused screenshot assertion.

Cover a loop side effect in the mixed-invalid test.
The test asserts that no setValue call runs and that DCG is not installed. Its payload has no key whose branch in the settings loop runs a side effect. The handler comment says an invalid value means no side effect runs, and this test does not check that for the loop. Adding a language key covers the changeLanguage side effect. The i18n mock must also export changeLanguage, or the handler fails when it reads the missing export.

Re the Out of Scope finding on the save acknowledgement (1969f4a).
Confined as suggested. SettingsView now sends a request id, disables Save while it waits, and clears the unsaved flag only on success for a save that changes an appearance value (the stored values of the four are compared with the edited ones, so a reset counts too). Every other save behaves exactly as before: no request id, nothing to wait for, the flag is cleared at once. On the host, the result message is only posted for a request that has an id, so a failed non-appearance write on a save without one keeps the existing error path (rethrown, no result). The unrelated SettingsView tests I had changed to saveAndConfirm are back to how they were; only the appearance tests use it. New tests cover a save without an appearance edit (no id, Save idle straight away, a later result ignored), an appearance edit mixed with other edits, and a reset. The condition is checked by two mutations (always acknowledge fails 2, never acknowledge fails 6).
The other half of the finding (the non-appearance error path) is as in my earlier answer: the result is posted only when the save asked for one, which now means only for saves with an appearance edit.
Persistence Integrity: unchanged answer. I am not changing ContextProxy's cache timing in this PR; that report also assessed an older commit.

- Settings View Pattern: When working on `SettingsView`, inputs must bind to the local `cachedState`, NOT the live `useExtensionState()`. The `cachedState` acts as a buffer for user edits, isolating them from the `ContextProxy` source-of-truth until the user explicitly clicks "Save". Wiring inputs directly to the live state causes race conditions.

Use request IDs that remain unique across webview reloads.
A reload resets saveCounter, so a new save can reuse an earlier ID. The host keeps processing the old save and posts its result through the current webview. The matching listener then clears the new save's pending state. A stale success can clear unsaved changes, while a stale failure can re-enable Save.

Re the findings on 1969f4a (Persistence Integrity, Regression Evidence, Lifecycle Resource Cleanup) — now fixed in the latest push.
Persistence Integrity (forward write order): valid. The chain tracked who may roll a key back, but did not order the writes themselves, so a slower durable write of an older save could land after a newer one. Writes of one appearance value now go through a per-key queue, for every save and every rollback and across providers. A write is only started once the one before it has reached durable storage (setValue is awaited to globalState.update), and a write that fails does not hold up the next. Writes of different keys do not wait for each other. The tests use a store whose writes reach storage later than they start, which the earlier in-memory mock could not show: the second save's write does not start until the first has reached storage, different keys are independent, a failure lets the next write through, and a rollback's write is queued behind the writes before it. Removing the queue fails 8 tests, and leaving the rollback write unqueued fails 1. I did not change ContextProxy's cache timing: the queue gives the ordering without touching how every setting is cached. A failed rollback is logged, and the user is told some settings may be left partly changed.
Lifecycle Resource Cleanup: valid. A finished write is now taken out of its chain (the writes on either side are joined) and out of the map when it is the latest, on success and on rollback, so nothing is reachable once the saves are over. Tests check that nothing is kept after a successful save, a rolled-back save, overlapping saves ending either way, and three overlapping failures. Keeping finished writes fails 3 of them.
Regression Evidence: added ClineProvider.spec.ts coverage for the four keys: unset in both states, a stored value for each, all four together, a reset (null) kept and not replaced by a default, and saving and resetting through updateSettings with the state message that reaches the webview. Dropping a key from the provider's mapping fails 5.
Re the request id comment in SettingsView: valid. A reload reset the module counter, so a save after a reload could reuse the id of an unanswered save from before it. Ids now come from saveRequestId.ts: settings-save-<loadId>-<n>, where loadId (time + random) differs on every load. Tests: ids never repeat within a load, and two loads that both issue their first save get different ids. Removing the load part fails the reload test.

Stop unedited appearance values from overwriting newer saved values.
Each settings panel keeps its own cachedState. That cache changes only when currentApiConfigName or mode changes, or when settings are imported. Another panel's save does not refresh it. handleSubmit always sends interfaceFontScale: interfaceFontScale ?? null from that cache, whether or not the user edited the field. If the stale panel later saves an unrelated field, it sends the old value and the host stores it. A state broadcast is not needed for this overwrite.
Track which appearance keys the user edited. Send only those keys in updatedSettings, and leave untouched appearance keys out of the payload. Do not use the cachedState-versus-extensionState comparison to decide what changed. A newer value saved by another panel looks like an edit to that comparison. Refreshing unedited keys from extensionState on a state update is not enough, because a save can occur before that update arrives.

Rollback can restore a stale value over an earlier successful save.
The snapshot is stale when a save registers behind a queued write whose setValue has not started yet. A write that is already in flight does not cause this, because its cache update has already happened.
Sequence with three saves on interfaceFontScale:
Save Q starts its write. The cache holds Q's value.
Save P registers behind Q and waits in the queue. Its write has not started.
Save A registers and reads previous from the cache. It gets Q's value, not P's.
P's write starts and succeeds. The stored value is now P's.
A's write starts. A then fails on a later appearance key.
The rollback restores A's previous, Q's value, over P's successful value. P still reported success.
Possible fix area
No patch is established here. Reading previous inside the queued callback alone is not safe. The rollback can set write.next.previous for a later pending write before that write's callback runs. A callback read would then overwrite the propagated value with the failed write's value.

The "Persistence Integrity" check reported that the four appearance values are saved in a loop that can stop half way. A failed write left some values stored and the rest not, and the webview could not tell. The changes below fix that, and nothing else about how settings are applied. The API configuration, telemetry, and debug messages are sent immediately, exactly as before, and every side effect of a setting runs in the same place as before.
webviewMessageHandler.ts,updateSettings: the four appearance values (interfaceFontScale, terminalFontSize, editorFontSize, spacingScale) are saved all-or-nothing. The result is posted assettingsSaveResult(success or the error), also when the state refresh fails, and the refresh runs after the values were put back.nullfor a reset), before any side effect runs or any setting is stored. An invalid value changes nothing, not even the valid settings sent with it. The save fails with an error and the webview is told. The webview is not trusted: the stepper's limits do not bind a message that was written by hand. Other settings are not checked, as before.SettingsView.tsx: only a save that changes an appearance value waits for the host's answer. The existingSettingsViewtests for those saves are unchanged.packages/types: thesettingsSaveResultmessage type.common.json(18 locales):errors.settings_save_failed, shown when a save is rolled back.Test Procedure
