feat: add Usage tab with provider limits and UI font, density and time settings - #2216
Provider limits come from two host services: copilotQuota and providerQuotas. They cover GitHub Copilot, OpenRouter, DeepSeek, Moonshot, Kimi Code, z.ai, MiniMax, NanoGPT, and OpenCode Go.
Providers with rolling windows (Kimi Code, z.ai, MiniMax, NanoGPT, OpenCode Go) show 5-hour, weekly, or monthly percent used and the reset time.
z.ai uses the host for the profile API line. MiniMax tries the token-plan endpoint, then the coding-plan endpoint. Kimi Code is queried only for API-key profiles (not OAuth).
Parsers are pure functions with unit tests.
Results are cached for 60 seconds. Concurrent callers share one request.
Keys stay in the extension host. The webview receives display-ready rows only.
A key goes only to the provider's own default host. A custom base URL is shown as "not checked".
Copilot auth reuses the VS Code GitHub session. It is silent and never prompts.
Usage history comes from local task history. Per-model usage is stored in task metadata (usageByModel).
Unpriced providers show tokens and "no price". They do not show $0.00.
UI settings
Font presets, size steppers, density, and a live preview.
12-hour and 24-hour time format.
A timestamp on each chat message.
Values apply through CSS variables. Defaults keep the current layout.
Review notes
The Copilot quota endpoint (copilot_internal/user) is not a public API. Failures degrade to a "not available" row.
UI tab
- Interface font / code font (free-text font-family, sanitized; empty = inherit VS Code)
- Spacing density (compact / comfortable / spacious) via data-zoo-density + CSS tokens;
comfortable matches existing 10px/15px padding so defaults are unchanged
Language tab
- Time format (auto / 12h / 24h) with live preview; applied to history timestamps
Usage tab (new)
- Read-only rollup of local task history: cost, tokens, cache-hit rate, tasks
- Range (today / 7d / 30d / all) and workspace scope filters
- Daily cost chart, breakdown by API profile and mode, top tasks (click to open)
- CSV export
Plumbing
- New nullable/optional global settings: interfaceFontFamily, codeFontFamily,
spacingDensity, timeFormat (types, ClineProvider state, webview context, save payload)
- Font resets send null so they survive JSON and clear the stored value
i18n: keys added to all locales (non-English values are English placeholders)
Tests: appearance, usage aggregation, time formatting; history spec mocks updated
…layout
GitHub Copilot / VS Code LM tasks persist totalCost=0 (subscription billing),
so the Usage tab showed $0.00 everywhere with empty bars and 0% shares.
- pickMetric(): when a range has tokens but no cost, charts, breakdowns and
top tasks switch to tokens, with an inline note explaining why
- daily series now tracks tokens alongside cost; top tasks tie-break on tokens
- token card shows in/out split when there are no cache reads
- layout closer to the mock: segmented range control, weekday labels under
the chart, colored dots + bars in breakdowns, section dividers, export
button above the disclaimer
- add missing charts-blue/purple/orange Tailwind color tokens
…eview in UI tab
Usage
- New 'By provider' breakdown; history only stores the profile name, so the
provider is resolved from the current profile list (unknown if deleted)
- Profile rows show 'Provider · model' under the profile name
UI tab
- Replace free-text font boxes with preset pickers (Match VS Code / curated
fonts rendered in their own face / Custom…); text input only for Custom…
- Live preview card shows interface font, code font, chat size and density
using unsaved values
- Tests: every preset stack passes sanitization; preset round-trip
…in Usage
UI tab
- Replace font pickers/preview with four steppers:
Interface font size (%), Terminal font size (px), Editor font size (px),
Spacing density (%). -/+ buttons, typed input (commit on blur/Enter),
arrow keys, clamping and a reset icon; the default clears the override so
VS Code changes still flow through
- CSS vars --zoo-ui-scale / --zoo-terminal-font-size / --zoo-editor-font-size
/ --zoo-spacing-scale drive body + Tailwind text tokens, TerminalOutput,
CodeBlock, diff view and chat row padding; defaults reproduce today's look
- Settings: interfaceFontScale, terminalFontSize, editorFontSize, spacingScale
(replaces unshipped interfaceFontFamily/codeFontFamily/spacingDensity)
Usage tab
- GitHub Copilot card: premium credits used/total, % bar, reset date, plan,
last updated, refresh. Shown only when a Copilot profile exists
- Host reads GET api.github.com/copilot_internal/user (same source as Copilot
Chat's usage panel) with VS Code's existing GitHub session,
silent (never prompts); 60s cache, coalesced requests, 15s timeout;
401 -> signed out, 403/404 -> no Copilot
- Parser unit-tested against the recorded response shape
…out; live appearance preview
Usage tab
- 'Provider limits' lists live credits/balances for every connected provider
with a usage API: GitHub Copilot (premium credits, reset date, plan),
OpenRouter (key limit or monthly spend), DeepSeek (balance), Moonshot
(balance). Endpoints are each provider own usage API. Keys stay in the extension host,
are read from saved profiles, and are only sent to the provider's own host;
profiles with a custom base URL are skipped. Parallel, 15s timeout, 60s cache
- No more '$0.00': the cost stat only appears when a provider reported a price
- Layout: one stat strip, compact range/scope row, quieter section titles,
stacked breakdown rows with thin bars, bordered top-task list, export moved
to an icon link in the header
- Replaces the Copilot-only card/route with the generic provider list
UI tab
- Preview card under the size steppers renders a sample chat, code block and
terminal output with the unsaved values (scoped CSS vars), so changes are
visible before Save
Tests: OpenRouter/DeepSeek/Moonshot parsers, connected-only querying, no key
sent to custom hosts, 401 handling, caching
…quest
Bug: the Usage tab resolved a task's provider/model from the *currently
selected* profile, so switching providers relabelled all past usage (Copilot
work showed up as Gemini 'gemini-3.1-pro-preview').
History stores only the profile name, so there was nothing correct to read.
Now the provider and model are recorded per request:
- Task writes apiProvider + modelId into each api_req_started message when
the request is made (placeholder and final update)
- taskMetadata derives HistoryItem.usageByModel (per provider+model: requests,
tokens, cache, cost) from those messages; a task that switches providers
mid-way is split by what actually served each request
- Usage tab aggregates from usageByModel: 'By provider' and new 'By model';
the live profile lookup and 'By API profile' are removed. Top-task rows show
provider · model. CSV gains provider/model columns
Tasks created before this change carry no record, so they are shown as
'Not recorded' rather than guessed.
Tests: per-request aggregation, mid-task provider switch, unrecorded tasks,
and a regression test proving a profile change cannot relabel past usage.
… for new code
Usage tab layout (follows the mock)
- three compact stat cards (cost|tokens, tokens|models, tasks)
- breakdown rows on one line: dot, name (+provider), value, bar, %
- 'By mode' as a single summary line
- tighter vertical rhythm between sections
Fixes found while testing
- NumberStepper: an emptied input reverted to the minimum instead of the
current value
Tests
- NumberStepper, ProviderLimits, UsageSettings (cost vs tokens, empty,
unrecorded, filters, export, interactions), UISettings steppers + live
preview, Language time format
- copilotQuota fetch/auth/cache/error paths, taskMetadata usageByModel
- coverage of new/changed code: webview 97% stmts, host 96% stmts
…iced/unpriced usage
Language tab (mock 2)
- 'Date & time' section: Time format as a segmented control (Auto | 12-hour |
24-hour), Date format select (Auto, MM/DD/YYYY, DD/MM/YYYY, YYYY-MM-DD) with
a live example, 'Show relative times' checkbox, and a preview card showing
the chat time, task-history time (relative or absolute) and hover text
- New settings: dateFormat, showRelativeTimes
- Task history honours them: relative ('5 min ago') or absolute date/time;
the tooltip always shows the full date/time in the chosen formats
- format.ts: formatDateOnly / formatTimeOnly; formatDateTime takes both formats
Usage: mixed priced + unpriced providers
- Cost stays the primary metric once any usage in the range is priced
- Buckets are flagged priced/unpriced; in cost mode a subscription provider
(e.g. GitHub Copilot) shows its tokens with a 'no price' tag, a muted bar
and '–' instead of '$0.00 · 0%'; same for top tasks and the mode line
Tests: segmented time format, date orders, relative/absolute history,
formatDateOnly/formatTimeOnly, mixed-provider aggregation and rendering
Security / correctness
- Error messages from quota fetches no longer forward arbitrary Error text
(network stack errors can embed URLs, headers or tokens). Only HTTP status,
timeout and a generic 'Request failed' reach the webview; covered by tests
that assert a planted secret never appears in results
- Remove .scout/ config that was accidentally committed
Design
- quotaUtils.ts: shared toNumber/asRecord/clampPercent/formatMoney/
formatCredits/roundToTenth/safeErrorMessage (was duplicated across
copilotQuota and providerQuotas)
- providerQuotas.loadProfiles(): profile loading moved out of the message
handler, which is now 4 lines and independently testable
- usage.ts: bucketView() and metricTotal() own the priced/unpriced rule;
UsageSettings no longer re-derives shares/flags inline
- providerLabel util: one source of provider names (was a private map in
UsageSettings, prop-drilled into ProviderLimits)
- Remove dead exports (QUOTA_PROVIDER_IDS, spacing-density constants) and
un-export unused CHAT_FONT_SIZE_* constants
Accessibility
- Daily chart is exposed as a single labelled image instead of unlabeled bars
Tests
- quotaUtils, loadProfiles, error-leak, malformed/trailing-slash base URLs,
requestProviderQuotas handler (keys reach the service, never the webview),
bucketView/metricTotal, providerLabel, tie-breaks, all-time range
- Coverage of new code: webview 97% stmts, host 98% stmts
A muted clock + time line under each user message and under the task's first
message:
- formatMessageTime(): Today / Yesterday (localised via Intl.RelativeTimeFormat,
no new translation keys), weekday within the last week, then a date; year only
when it isn't the current year. Day boundaries are local midnight, so 23:55
last night is still 'Yesterday' and 00:05 is 'Today'
- Honours the Time format (Auto/12h/24h) and Date format settings; the tooltip
always shows the full date and time
- MessageTimestamp is presentational (formats come in as props), renders a
semantic <time dateTime=...>, hides the decorative icon from assistive tech
and renders nothing for an invalid timestamp
- Hidden while a message is being edited, since the edit box replaces the bubble
- Tests: formatter boundaries (midnight, week, year, 24h, date orders, clock
skew), component, ChatRow integration (own timestamp, ordering, settings,
assistant text unaffected); keep real format helpers in tests that mock the
module
Replace repo-specific example text with neutral copy in all locales:
'Add a loading spinner to the Save button' / 'Done. I added a spinner...'
and a neutral code sample.

Added a Usage settings tab with cost and token summaries, charts, provider/model breakdowns, date and workspace filters, and CSV export.
Added provider quota information with refresh controls for supported providers.
Added appearance controls for interface scale, terminal and editor font sizes, and spacing, with a live preview.
Added configurable time and date formats, relative timestamps, and timestamps in chat and task views.
Added provider- and model-level usage details to task history.
Improvements
Usage history separates recorded usage by provider and model while preserving aggregate totals.
Task history uses relative timestamps by default, with an option to show absolute dates and times.
This pull request adds provider quota reporting, local task usage summaries and CSV export, and settings for appearance and date/time display. It also adds message and task timestamps and records provider and model attribution for request usage.
Changes: Usage and Settings
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Usage and quota data contracts packages/types/..., src/core/task/..., src/core/task-persistence/...
Settings and history types gain appearance preferences, quota results, and per-model usage fields. API request messages record provider and model identifiers.
Provider quota retrieval and display src/services/language-models/..., src/core/webview/..., webview-ui/src/components/settings/ProviderLimits.tsx
The extension host retrieves and parses quota data for Copilot and supported providers. The Settings view displays provider status, usage windows, percentages, and reset dates.
Task usage aggregation and Usage tab webview-ui/src/utils/usage.ts, webview-ui/src/components/settings/UsageSettings.tsx, webview-ui/src/components/settings/SettingsView.tsx, webview-ui/src/i18n/locales/*/settings.json
The Usage tab filters local history by time range and workspace. It displays cost or token summaries, breakdowns, charts, top tasks, and filtered CSV exports.
Settings add interface scale, terminal and editor font sizes, and spacing scale. CSS variables apply these values to the interface and chat.
Date/time preferences and timestamps webview-ui/src/utils/format.ts, webview-ui/src/components/settings/LanguageSettings.tsx, webview-ui/src/components/chat/MessageTimestamp.tsx, webview-ui/src/components/history/TaskItemFooter.tsx
Settings add time and date formats and a relative-time option. Chat messages, task headers, and history footers render timestamps using the configured formats.
The mutation job currently fails and needs an approved exclusion or a smaller change before merge. Provider limits can also briefly show stale data after a failed refresh.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the two main parts of the change: a Usage tab with provider limits, and UI font, density, and time settings. The changeset includes both. The title is 79 characters, which is within a normal length for a single-sentence title, but it is a long list-style title that packs two features into one line.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template's main sections: Related GitHub Issue (Closes #2215), Description, Test Procedure, Screenshots, Pre-Submission Checklist, and Documentation. It explains the Usage tab, the UI settings, and the review notes. Some template sections are missing or incomplete: the Visual Snapshot item is unchecked, the Get in Touch section is absent, and the Documentation Updates section is not filled in as a template choice. The description also uses some terms that are not Simplified Technical English, such as the short fragments and the non-imperative bullets, but the core content is clear.
Resolution
Consider these small additions before merge: select one option in the Documentation Updates section, add a Discord username under Get in Touch, and state whether a visual snapshot will be added in a follow-up or why it is not needed. The Visual Snapshot item applies here because the Usage tab and UI settings change what users see.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changed files map to #2215 objectives. Changes include the provider quota services and their parsers and tests, usage history and CSV utilities, usageByModel task metadata, appearance and format utilities, the NumberStepper, AppearancePreview, UISettings, LanguageSettings, and UsageSettings components, chat timestamp components, and locale entries. Supporting changes such as shared types, context wiring, CSS variables, and visual fixtures are needed for these objectives. The reported changed-line mutation gate failure is a CI process concern and not an unrelated code change.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No changed path introduces a concrete security-boundary failure. Quota API keys remain host-side; only formatted ProviderQuota rows are posted to the webview. Quota fetches use fixed provider-owned URLs, and custom gateway profiles are rejected without network calls. Copilot tokens use a fixed GitHub URL and sanitized errors. New UI values are rendered as text or clamped numeric CSS values, with no execution sink or approval bypass.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#2215] The Usage tab, provider quota services, local history aggregation with range and workspace filters, CSV export, UI font, scale, density and time settings, and the live preview are implemented. Two coding requirements are still not met.
Chat timestamps (#2215 requires a timestamp on each chat message). ChatRowContent renders MessageTimestamp beneath user feedback messages only. ChatRow.timestamp.spec.tsx expects assistant text to have no timestamp. Assistant and other message types therefore show no send time. The author's later update does not change this behavior.
Locale strings (#2215 requires new strings to be translated across all supported locales). The author reports 78 strings translated across 17 locales at head d58cfe3. The current change summary still describes the new strings as English in de, es, fr, id, ja, ko, pl, pt-BR, tr, and vi. The locale files were not inspected, so this conflict is unresolved. The result is INCONCLUSIVE for these ten locales.
All other objectives reviewed (provider-host routing, custom-base-URL handling, Copilot silent auth, 60-second caching, unpriced-usage display) have supporting code and tests in the change set.
Resolution
Render MessageTimestamp for every applicable chat message, including assistant text and other message types. Update ChatRow.timestamp.spec.tsx to expect a timestamp on those messages. For the de, es, fr, id, ja, ko, pl, pt-BR, tr, and vi settings.json files, confirm that every new key has a translated value. If any key still holds English text, translate it. If the translations already exist, provide the file paths and the relevant keys so the locale point can be verified.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
The previous persistence failure remains unresolved. SettingsView.handleSubmit now adds seven persisted fields to updatedSettings at webview-ui/src/components/settings/SettingsView.tsx:455-462 and immediately clears isChangeDetected at :486 without awaiting host confirmation. The host processes the object with awaited, separate writes in src/core/webview/webviewMessageHandler.ts:761-872; ContextProxy.updateGlobalState updates stateCache before awaiting globalState.update at src/core/config/ContextProxy.ts:363-369. If storage rejects while saving a later field, earlier fields and cache state remain changed, later fields are not written, and the webview reports no unsaved changes. No rollback, atomic batch, or success/failure response was added.
Resolution
Persist the complete settings update atomically, or snapshot old values and roll back completed writes when any write fails. Return an explicit success or failure response to the webview, and clear isChangeDetected only after the host confirms that every write succeeded.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
The Usage tab is a durable visible UI change, but the PR adds no Playwright snapshot for that screen. SettingsView.tsx adds the usage tab and renders UsageSettings; UsageSettings.tsx adds provider limits, filters, charts, breakdowns, export, and empty states. The changed visual harness covers only AppearancePreview; the changed screenshot files contain only appearance-preview and existing UI-settings baselines. The Vitest Usage tests cover behavior and state branches, but they do not provide the required screen-level visual regression evidence. This matches webview-ui/AGENTS.md lines 46–57 and the custom check.
Resolution
Add a deterministic Playwright gallery story for the Usage screen and a *.visual.tsx test. Commit container-generated baselines for at least one populated state and one empty or degraded provider-limits state. Keep the existing Vitest behavior tests.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
The changed quota request path still leaks work after ProviderLimits unmounts. ProviderLimits posts requestProviderQuotas on mount and cleanup removes only its message listener; it does not cancel or identify the request. The host handler still awaits loadProfiles and getProviderQuotas, then always posts providerQuotas. If the user leaves Usage while profile loading or provider fetches are pending, that work continues and posts to the webview; reopening Usage starts another full profile load and quota operation. The keyed fetch cache does not deduplicate loadProfiles, so overlapping mounts can duplicate profile processing.
Resolution
Associate each quota request with a request or lifecycle identifier. Invalidate the identifier on ProviderLimits unmount and skip stale responses. Abort pending profile and provider work where possible. Deduplicate or cancel the complete profile-load plus quota operation, not only keyed-provider fetches. Add a regression test that delays profile loading, unmounts and remounts ProviderLimits, and verifies that stale work does not post and profiles/providers are processed only once.

Current step: Fix the failing required CI checks; awaiting-maintainer requires CI and automated review completion.
Review-state labels are managed by this workflow; do not edit them manually. community-approved is managed the same way — do not add or remove it manually. It signals a fresh community code approval for the current head as an advisory priority only; maintainer review is still required.
Request: maintainer-reviewed narrow exclusion for the changed-code mutation gate
mutation-diff fails with extension has 575 changed executable lines (limit 500). The same measurement gives webview 1291 and types 45. The gate stops at the first package over the limit, so the extension error is the only one reported.
Why this is one PR. The features share state and UI, and splitting them would leave half-working settings between merges:
The Usage tab and its provider limits share ProviderQuota types, the requestProviderQuotas message and the usageByModel history field.
The UI settings (font scale, density, time/date format) share ExtensionStateContext and the Settings tab list with the Usage tab.
Message timestamps read the same time/date format settings.
Where the lines are (changed executable lines, from scripts/stryker-diff.mjs run against this branch):
providerQuotas.ts is five providers' response parsers (Kimi Code, z.ai, MiniMax, NanoGPT, OpenCode Go) plus DeepSeek and Moonshot balances. They are pure functions of a JSON payload.
Test coverage. Every new file has a spec, and I ran line and branch coverage over the files this PR adds or changes. Remaining gaps in the PR's changed lines: none in the extension quota and persistence code; none in the new webview components and utils; TaskItemFooter.tsx has no uncovered branch on its changed lines.
What I am asking for. An exclusion for this PR only, or a one-time limit bump, covering the three extension and webview paths above. If you would rather have it split, I can cut it as: (1) provider limits (extension), (2) Usage tab and history, (3) UI/time settings and timestamps. That means two follow-up PRs stacked on this one.

Run the DST regression under a DST-observing time zone.
These assertions use the runner's local time zone. In UTC, the old fixed-24-hour implementation would also pass them, so the test does not reliably detect the regression it names. Run this case under TZ=America/New_York and assert that the fixture crosses an offset change. Add a summarizeUsage assertion for the final daily bar. The webview Vitest configuration does not select a time zone. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

### When a UI change needs a snapshot
If your PR changes anything a user would notice at a glance — layout, spacing, theme tokens, brand elements, gradients, mask/blur effects, hover/empty/error states — **add a `*.visual.tsx` snapshot to the same PR**. Do not attach screenshots to the PR description as evidence; commit the baseline instead so future PRs get regression coverage automatically.

Assert both credentials and caller-specific quota results.
Both requests receive the same payload, and the test discards both returned results. It can therefore pass if either request uses the wrong authorization header or the callers receive each other’s quota. The repository’s test guidance requires a return-value assertion when a test otherwise checks only mock call counts.

CodeQL "password hash with insufficient computational effort": fixed. The quota cache no longer hashes the API key at all. Entries are keyed by provider and URL set, and a cached or in-flight result is reused only when the stored key equals the current key, so a key change refetches. Tests cover a key change, and two keys in flight at once not sharing a request.
Quotas
requestProviderQuotas always answers (logs on failure), so the Usage tab can no longer spin forever.
A profile on the provider's own host is preferred over a custom-gateway profile. The gateway key is never sent (asserted).
Only successful results are cached, so adding a key or a transient error shows up on the next open. Concurrent callers share one request.
Copilot with neither counts nor a percentage now reads "Usage not reported" with no bar, not a measured "0% used".
Usage tab
The daily chart steps by calendar day, so it keeps today's bar across a 23h or 25h DST day.
The DST tests are pinned to America/New_York, assert the fixture really crosses an offset change, and I checked that they fail against the old 24h loop.
The view and CSV export share one now, which rolls over at the next local midnight. Fake-timer tests cover the rollover, the export using the view's day, and no timer left after unmount.
CSV cells beginning with = + - @, tab or CR get a leading apostrophe (numeric columns untouched).
Per-row assertions replace the combined-text check in the mixed priced/unpriced test.
Appearance and language
Unset preview values are set to initial, so a value saved on <html> can't leak in and a reset shows before Save. The editor sample uses the live 0.95em fallback.
There are new Playwright baselines for the preview (set values, and reset while <html> carries saved values) in all four themes.
The date and time preview formats in the language picked in the dropdown, not the saved one. The format helpers take an optional locale.
The eslint-disable and the new any are gone. Provider limits now honour the time and date format settings.
MessageTimestamp rejects out-of-range dates, such as 8.64e15 + 1, that would throw in toISOString().
Housekeeping: the changeset is removed. All 78 new strings are translated across the 17 non-English locales (placeholders checked), and the "Auto follows your system locale" text is corrected to say it follows the display language.
mutation-diff is still red for the line-count reason in my earlier comment; it needs a maintainer decision.
Each PR starts from main and does not depend on the others. The review fixes from this PR moved into the PR that owns the code.
Two changes from this PR are not in the three PRs:
Atomic settings save with a host acknowledgement. None of the three PRs needs it, because none of them adds async work to the save. If a maintainer wants it, I will open it as its own PR with its own issue.
