refactor(providers): map xAI tool_choice to the Responses API shape with a typed request body - #2036
Extracted from the abort-signal series unit (PR 1293) at reviewer request, so that unit stays abort-wiring only:
xai: replace the as anytool_choice cast with an explicit mapToolChoice mapping — Chat Completions nests named-tool references under function/custom, the Responses API puts the name at the top level; allowed_tools allowlist entries are flattened to the Responses shape, other entry types pass through unchanged.
xai: type the request body as ResponseCreateParamsStreaming (drops five lint suppressions: xai.tsno-explicit-any count 7 → 2) and send max_output_tokens/temperature unconditionally — getModel() always resolves them.
anthropic-vertex: drop the no-op content_block_stop case (its own comment noted no action is needed; NativeToolCallParser handles tool-call completion).
Why
Requested in review on the abort-signal unit: these hunks are tool-payload correctness/typing, orthogonal to abort wiring.
Verification
75/75 green in xai.spec.ts + anthropic-vertex.spec.ts (five new mapping/param tests ported with the change)
tsc --noEmit → 0 errors
per-file ESLint (--max-warnings=0) clean on touched files
prettier --check clean on touched files
Updated this round (2026-10-13, review follow-up)
mapToolChoice now rejects allowed_tools entries of type "function" whose name is missing or not a string, before responses.create is called (the nested Chat Completions shape cannot express the allowlist entry in the Responses API, and xAI's handling of the malformed payload is unspecified). Non-function entries still pass through unchanged.
Pass-through test narrowed to the non-function case; new test rejects four malformed function-entry shapes and asserts no request is issued (negative control verified).
Verification at this head: 25/25 green in xai.spec.ts; tsc --noEmit → 0 errors; per-file ESLint (--max-warnings=0) clean; prettier --check clean on touched files.
…ith a typed request body
Extracted from the abort-signal series unit (PR 1293) at reviewer
request so that unit stays abort-wiring only:
- xai: replace the `as any` tool_choice cast with an explicit
mapToolChoice mapping (Chat Completions nests named-tool references
under function/custom; the Responses API puts the name at the top
level; allowed_tools entries are flattened).
- xai: type the request body as ResponseCreateParamsStreaming (drops
five lint suppressions) and send max_output_tokens/temperature

- anthropic-vertex: drop the no-op content_block_stop case (the
comment itself noted no action is needed; NativeToolCallParser

Verification: 75/75 green in xai.spec.ts + anthropic-vertex.spec.ts;
tsc --noEmit 0 errors; eslint --max-warnings=0 clean on touched files
(xai.ts suppression count 7 -> 2); prettier clean.
Improved tool-choice handling for xAI responses, including named function and custom choices, allowed tools, and automatic selection when no choice is specified.
Invalid function tool entries are rejected before a request is sent.
xAI requests consistently apply token and temperature settings and enable parallel tool calls by default when tools are included.
Prompt completion requests forward abort signals and usable timeout settings, with timeouts rounded and capped; unusable timeouts are omitted.
The xAI handler maps Chat Completions tool choices to Responses API request shapes. It builds a typed request with token and temperature settings. Tests cover tool-choice mapping, malformed entries, request options, and model defaults.
Changes: xAI Responses API request mapping
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Map and validate tool choices src/api/providers/xai.ts, src/api/providers/__tests__/xai.spec.ts
The handler maps function and custom tool choices and flattens function entries in allowed_tools. It rejects malformed function entries. Tests cover mapped and pass-through choices.
Build typed requests and apply defaults src/api/providers/xai.ts, src/api/providers/__tests__/xai.spec.ts, src/eslint-suppressions.json
The handler uses a typed Responses API request, assigns token and temperature settings, and applies tool-choice and parallel-call defaults. Tests check request bodies, abort signals, and timeout options. The lint suppression count is reduced.
Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code#1293: Added xAI abort-signal handling and request-shape tests that this PR updates.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 68266
The request behavior is currently correct, but restoring the no-options assertions is recommended to preserve regression coverage.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the main change: xAI tool_choice is mapped to the Responses API shape, and the request body is typed. It matches the xai.ts changes in the summary and the PR objectives. The title is 93 characters, which is longer than the template's advice to keep titles short, but it stays specific and readable.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No changed security-boundary failure is present. In src/api/providers/xai.ts:84-126, tool choices are mapped to the Responses API shape, and malformed allowed_tools function entries are rejected before request creation. Non-function entries are passed through as supported Responses API allowlist records. mapResponseTools continues to filter and schema-convert function tools at lines 128-145. The request keeps store: false at lines 163-170, and the inspected task callers provide tool_choice: "auto"; no changed path leaks secrets or PII, executes input locally, or bypasses an application allowlist.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
No changed persistence path exists. The pull request changes xAI request construction, tool-choice mapping, abort-listener timing, tests, and an ESLint suppression. The only storage-related field is the existing unchanged store: false request setting; no write, rollback, atomicity, await, or persisted-default propagation path changed.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
The previous listener-leak path is addressed. createMessage now performs mapToolChoice and all request construction before bridgeExternalAbortSignal at src/api/providers/xai.ts:191-197. After registration, the request and stream execution are covered by try/finally at lines 199-237, which disposes the listener on completion, failure, or early generator exit. The malformed-entry test also verifies that addEventListener is not called and that responses.create is not called. Prior failure addressed: xai.ts moved abort bridging after throw-prone tool-choice mapping and retained cleanup in finally; xai.spec.ts verifies malformed entries register no listener and issue no request.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template's main sections: What, Why, and Verification. It explains the xAI tool_choice mapping, the typed request body, the anthropic-vertex cleanup, and the follow-up rejection of malformed allowed_tools entries. It does not link an approved GitHub Issue, which the template requires. It also lacks the template's Related GitHub Issue, Test Procedure, Pre-Submission Checklist, and Documentation Updates sections. The description says the change was extracted from PR 1293 at reviewer request, but it gives no issue number.
Resolution
Add a Related GitHub Issue section with a "Closes: #<number>" line for an approved issue. Add a Test Procedure section that lists the test commands and any manual checks. Complete the Pre-Submission Checklist and the Documentation Updates section. Remove or fix the mention of the anthropic-vertex change if it is not part of this PR's scope, because the PR title covers only xAI.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
The previous regression remains unresolved. mapToolChoice rejects an allowed-tools entry of type function when function.name is not a string (src/api/providers/xai.ts:109-119), including an object with no name and an entry with no function property. The focused negative test covers name: null, name: 123, function: null, and a function-valued function (src/api/providers/__tests__/xai.spec.ts:393-418), but it does not cover { type: "function", function: {} } or { type: "function" }. This leaves the absent-name/unset branch without focused coverage.
Resolution
Extend the createMessage malformed-entry test with { type: "function", function: {} } and preferably { type: "function" }. For each entry, assert the validation error, assert that responses.create is not called, and retain the abort-listener assertion.

Chat Completions allowlist entries are open records, so a function entry
can arrive with a missing or non-string name. Forwarding such an entry
unchanged would send the nested Chat Completions shape to the Responses
API, which cannot express that allowlist entry, and how xAI handles the
malformed payload is unspecified. mapToolChoice now rejects function
entries without a valid string name at the boundary (before
responses.create); non-function entries still pass through unchanged.
The pass-through test now pins only the non-function case; a new test
rejects four malformed function-entry shapes (null name, null ref,
function value, non-string name) and asserts no request is issued
(negative control verified: reverting the throw to a pass-through fails
the new test).
Verification at this head: 25/25 green in xai.spec.ts; tsc --noEmit 0

The merge brings main xai responses-create code whose as-any casts main suppresses (count 7 in upstream eslint-suppressions.json). Locally the auto-merge kept the older count 2, so compile lint flagged the inherited casts. Use the upstream baseline instead of leaving the branch red.
The merge keeps five as-any occurrences in xai.ts (two in the mapResponseTools signature, three in the responses create call); the upstream baseline of seven would leave stale suppressions, which eslint rejects. Set the count to the actual five.
The merge with main makes responses.create take a second options argument. Rewriting the assertions to inspect mock.calls[0][0] left the old second expectation argument in place, which failed type-check (toEqual takes one argument). Each assertion now checks the request body and the separate options argument explicitly (signal/timeout, forwarded timeout, absent options). xai.spec.ts 49 passed; tsc clean for the file.

Review follow-up: mapToolChoice throws for malformed allowed_tools entries, and the abort bridge cleanup only covers the request that follows. The bridge now registers after the whole request body (including the tool-choice mapping) is built, so a construction failure cannot leave a listener on metadata.abortSignal. The malformed-entry test now passes an abortSignal and asserts addEventListener was never called. xai.spec.ts 49 passed; tsc clean.
fix(skills): report YAML frontmatter parse errors and serialize SKILL.md safely #1321 — realpath failure in updateSkillModes: the resolution error now propagates instead of falling back to the discovered path; a resolution failure cannot write through a symlink (or replace it with a regular file). Added a test where discovery succeeds but the publish-time resolution fails: exact error propagates, no write/rename. SkillsManager.spec.ts 117 passed.
feat(file-safety): atomic text publish primitive + safeWriteJson refactor (A4, #1375) #1395 — lock contention + committed-cache warning: the alias/referent lock test asserts the ELOCKED failure kind and releases both the holder and, if it ever acquired, the contending lock from a finally block. The committed-clear cache test keeps the PublishNotDurableError instance and asserts the exact warning text + instance. fileLock + cache-manager 15 passed.
ci: surface the changed-code mutation report as a job summary and a named artifact #2149 — summary rename-failure test: uses an existing regular file (so the initial read succeeds and the write reaches rename), stubs fs.renameSync to fail once, asserts rename ran once, the EIO warning, temp-file removal, and that the existing summary is untouched. node --test scripts/mutation-summary.test.mjs passes.
feat(task): observation registry with read completeness (U3, #1375) #1912 — no-workspace fail-closed + exact staging dir: confineForMcpWrite throws when neither provider cwd nor getWorkspacePath() supplies a root, so a project write cannot proceed unbounded (regression test asserts safeWriteJson is never called); the backup-chmod test asserts fs.rmdir on the exact staging directory recorded by fsSync.mkdirSync. McpHub + safeWriteText 179 passed.
refactor(providers): map xAI tool_choice to the Responses API shape with a typed request body #2036 — abort listener leak on construction failure: the abort bridge now registers after the whole request body (including mapToolChoice) is built, so a malformed allowed_tools entry cannot leave a listener on metadata.abortSignal; the malformed-entry test asserts addEventListener was never called. xai.spec.ts 49 passed.
Restore the no-options assertion in the no-abort createMessage tests.
The previous assertions matched both arguments to responses.create, including undefined as the second argument. The current assertions inspect only the request body, so unintended request options would not fail these tests.
