Wire the request-level CompletePromptOptions (abortSignal/timeoutMs) and the Task-level metadata.abortSignal through the anthropic-family providers and xAI/MiniMax, so user-initiated cancellation and timeouts reach the underlying SDK calls.

Providers / paths touched

  • src/api/providers/anthropic.ts — completePrompt forwards options?.abortSignal / options?.timeoutMs as SDK request options; createMessage bridges metadata?.abortSignal into a per-request AbortController (pre-aborted guard + { once: true } listener, Bedrock pattern) and passes the internal signal to client.messages.create (both the prompt-caching and default branches). Existing client-level timeout untouched.
  • src/api/providers/anthropic-vertex.ts — same for AnthropicVertexHandler: completePrompt options forwarding; createMessage bridging merged into the existing anthropic-beta request-options object.
  • src/api/providers/xai.ts — completePrompt forwards signal/timeout to client.responses.create; createMessage bridging; cancellations are normalized to the contract AbortError (isRequestAborted + createAbortError) in both call paths so callers can detect error.name === "AbortError" (otherwise they would be wrapped by handleOpenAIError).
  • src/api/providers/minimax.ts — completePrompt options forwarding; createMessage bridging.

Tests added

  • Ported the reference-implementation completePrompt tests for all four providers: abort-signal passthrough (same signal instance), timeout passthrough, signal+timeout merge, timeoutMs: 0 defined-check, and backward-compatibility (no options → undefined second argument).
  • New createMessage bridging tests per provider: pre-aborted metadata.abortSignal → request rejects with name === "AbortError"; external abort mid-flight → the SDK request's signal aborts and the stream rejects with AbortError. Uses makeCreateMessageMetadata from src/test-utils/api.ts.
  • Updated existing single-argument toHaveBeenCalledWith assertions in xai.spec.ts / minimax.spec.ts / anthropic*.spec.ts for the new two-argument SDK calls (explicit undefined second arg where no request options are sent).

Verification in worktree: full vitest runs for all four specs (173/173 passing), per-file eslint --prune-suppressions --max-warnings=0 (exit 0, suppression counts unchanged), and tsc --noEmit (clean).

Part of the abort-signal series (round 1). Builds on #674, #901, #1008. Addresses #404.

Updated this round (2026-10-13)

Merged current upstream main into the branch to clear the dirty state. Two conflicts, both resolved by keeping both sides' intent:

  • anthropic-vertex.ts: main added reasoningTokens (output_tokens_details.thinking_tokens) to the message_start/message_delta usage yields; this branch re-indented the same switch inside its abort-bridging try block. Kept main's reasoningTokens content at the branch's indentation; the bridging changes are untouched.
  • anthropic.spec.ts: both sides added an import (branch: the makeCreateMessageMetadata test util; main: the ApiStreamChunk type). Kept both.

Verification at this head: 236/236 green across the five touched specs (anthropic, anthropic-vertex, minimax, xai, stream-cleanup); tsc --noEmit → 0 errors; per-file ESLint (--max-warnings=0) clean; prettier --check clean on touched files.

Updated this round (2026-10-13, review follow-up)

Addressed the review threads:

  • Extracted the four copies of the external-abort bridge (anthropic, anthropic-vertex, minimax, xai) into bridgeExternalAbortSignal in utils/abort-signal.ts — one canonical comment, unit-tested including a negative control that dispose() detaches the exact retained callback.
  • xAI: both createMessage and completePrompt now normalize cancellations through isRequestAborted + createAbortError; the raw OpenAI SDK abort (name Error, message "Request was aborted.") no longer escapes to callers' AbortError guards. Specs pin the normalized shape.
  • anthropic-vertex: anthropic-beta is betas.join(",") again so a second beta added to the builder later is not silently dropped.
  • Scope move (per review): the xAI mapToolChoice mapping, the typed request body, the unconditional max_output_tokens/temperature, and the vertex content_block_stop removal left this branch and are back up as their own PR (refactor(providers): map xAI tool_choice to the Responses API shape with a typed request body #2036); this unit is abort-wiring only again.
  • Cleanup coverage: vertex and xai specs now pin listener detach on the create-rejects and consumer-early-return paths (vertex uses an inline finally, so the shared stream-cleanup coverage does not reach it).

Verification at this head: 273/273 green across the six touched specs; tsc --noEmit → 0 errors; per-file ESLint (--max-warnings=0) clean; prettier --check clean on touched files.

Stryker directive removal (equivalence notes)

The one // Stryker disable next-line ObjectLiteral,BooleanLiteral in utils/abort-signal.ts was removed (directive comments are banned in touched files). Equivalence: on signal.addEventListener("abort", onAbort, { once: true }), the ObjectLiteral mutant ({}) and the BooleanLiteral mutant (once: false) are unobservable - an AbortSignal fires its abort event exactly once per signal, so the once flag can never change listener invocation count, and the listener is additionally removed explicitly in the callers' finally blocks. No test can distinguish the mutants; maintainers may exclude or accept the advisory.

Timeout guard hardening (helper port)

Port of the #1300 CodeRabbit finding to the shared mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout helper: non-finite timeoutMs (Infinity) now means "no timeout" instead of throwing ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE from AbortSignal.timeout, and finite delays are capped at 2^31-1 ms (Node clamps larger delays to 1ms, which aborted requests almost immediately). Regression tests added; negative controls fail exactly the two new tests. Identical helper fix lands in every unit of the abort series (merge-order aware); canonical copy in #1293.

Fractional-timeout rounding wave

Follow-up CR round: Node validates AbortSignal.timeout delays as uint32, so finite fractions (1500.5, 0.5) threw ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE like Infinity did. mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout now rounds delays up (a positive fraction never becomes 0 ms) before capping at 2^31-1 ms; regression test mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout(undefined, 1.5). Identical helper patch in every unit of the series (merge-order aware, canonical in #1293).

Assertion strengthening (rounding wave follow-up)

The fractional-timeout test now spies AbortSignal.timeout and pins the received delay (2 for 1.5, 1 for 0.5, never 0) instead of only asserting no-throw plus eventual abort; a round-down mutation (Math.ceil -> Math.floor) fails exactly this test. Identical patch in every unit of the series (canonical in #1293).

Updated 2026-10-22 (head f549adcac)

  • Merged current upstream/main (05d01f33d), clearing has-conflicts.
  • Merge resolution kept this unit's hasUsableTimeout() helper as the single source of the timeout-usability guard (mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout), rather than duplicating main's inline expression.
  • Local proof on the refreshed head: ESLint clean on the changed files, tsc --noEmit clean, vitest run over anthropic, anthropic-vertex, minimax, xai, stream-cleanup, abort-signal specs → 280/280 pass.

57-57: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality

No existing loop matches the selector.

The only literal-array for...of loop found calls expectWholeParse(...), not expect(...). It does not match callee.name='expect', so the reported lint failure is not present.

28-37: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality

The new selectors do not flag existing non-test src/api code.

All non-this.timeoutMs request timeout assignments use toSdkTimeoutMs(timeoutMs). No applicable 2147483647 literal exists in non-test src/api code.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Streaming requests to Anthropic, Anthropic Vertex, MiniMax, and xAI can be cancelled using abort signals. Several prompt-completion integrations now honor abort signals and valid timeouts.
  • Bug Fixes
    • xAI cancellation errors are consistently reported as abort errors.
    • Anthropic Vertex responses with omitted output-token usage report zero output tokens.
    • Invalid timeouts are not forwarded; fractional timeouts are rounded up, and oversized values are capped.
    • Abort listeners are cleaned up when streaming completes, fails, or stops early.

Provider handlers now forward external abort signals and usable timeouts to SDK requests. Streaming handlers remove abort listeners after completion, failure, or early consumer return. Shared timeout helpers standardize validation, rounding, and capping. Tests and lint selectors cover these behaviors and related request mappings.

Changes: Provider request cancellation and options

Layer / File(s) Summary
Abort and cleanup primitives
src/api/providers/utils/abort-signal.ts, src/api/providers/stream-cleanup.ts, src/api/providers/utils/__tests__/abort-signal.spec.ts, src/api/providers/__tests__/stream-cleanup.spec.ts
Adds helpers to bridge external abort signals, validate and convert timeouts, and invoke cleanup after stream iteration. Tests cover signal propagation and disposal, timeout validation, and cleanup after completion, failure, or early return.
Streaming request cancellation
src/api/providers/anthropic.ts, src/api/providers/anthropic-vertex.ts, src/api/providers/minimax.ts, src/api/providers/xai.ts, src/api/providers/__tests__/anthropic.spec.ts, src/api/providers/__tests__/anthropic-vertex.spec.ts, src/api/providers/__tests__/minimax.spec.ts, src/api/providers/__tests__/xai.spec.ts
Streaming requests pass bridged signals and clean up listeners across request and stream lifecycles. xAI normalizes recognized abort failures. Anthropic caching requests add the caching beta. Tests cover lifecycle handling, xAI request parameters, and Anthropic Vertex usage-token defaults.
Complete-prompt request options
src/api/providers/anthropic.ts, src/api/providers/anthropic-vertex.ts, src/api/providers/minimax.ts, src/api/providers/xai.ts, src/api/providers/friendli.ts, src/api/providers/io-intelligence.ts, src/api/providers/nanogpt.ts, src/api/providers/native-ollama.ts, src/api/providers/__tests__/*
Complete-prompt handlers forward optional abort signals and usable timeouts. Accepted timeouts are rounded up and capped; unusable values are omitted. Native Ollama uses the shared timeout helpers for timer scheduling.
Provider timeout and test hygiene
packages/config-eslint/api-provider-hygiene.js, packages/config-eslint/api-provider-hygiene.test.js, src/eslint.config.mjs, src/api/providers/__tests__/bedrock.spec.ts, src/api/providers/__tests__/vscode-lm.spec.ts, src/api/transform/__tests__/vscode-lm-format.spec.ts
Adds lint selectors for timeout forwarding, shared helpers, timeout limits, and assertion loops over literal arrays. Updates selector tests and parameterizes existing provider and transform tests.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to ca3db

Both providers now clean up abort listeners when streams complete. No actionable merge-blocking issue remains after normal checks.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to ac0e1

Cancellation now reaches more model requests, and xAI tool choices are translated without adding tool definitions. No new security exposure was established. One lifecycle question remains: whether closing a stream early also stops work at the provider.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed cancellation behavior applies to requests using the four affected adapters and their external model SDKs. The inspected controllers are request-local rather than shared across concurrent requests.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — Caller metadata controls cancellation and tool selection at the provider boundary. The inspected xAI translation changes selection format, not the set of submitted callable tool definitions; upstream authorization and downstream execution were not established by this scope.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — xAI propagates native and SDK abort errors without applying its ordinary provider-error wrapper, preserving a distinction for callers that recognize those error forms.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Verify with the SDK contract or an integration test whether early consumer return cancels the underlying provider request; if it does not, explicitly terminate that request on early exit.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is detailed and covers the linked issue, implementation scope, test coverage, verification results, and review follow-ups. It omits the repository template headings and checklist, but the required technical information is mostly present.

Full details: Security Boundaries

Explanation

No changed path meets the security failure conditions. The provider changes forward caller-owned abort signals and validated timeout values; they do not expose secrets or PII, execute input, or remove an approval or allowlist check. The xAI request keeps store: false, and the Anthropic model switch remains the existing model boundary.

Full details: Persistence Integrity

Explanation

No changed persistence path exists. The PR changes provider request options, abort-signal bridging, stream cleanup, timeout conversion, tests, and lint rules. The Anthropic prompt-caching change only adds a request header. The diff contains no persistence writes, storage operations, rollback paths, or persisted-default propagation.

Full details: Regression Evidence

Explanation

The prior regression remains unresolved. AnthropicVertexHandler.createMessage now places SDK stream creation and for await iteration inside a finally that removes the external abort listener (src/api/providers/anthropic-vertex.ts:137-249). The Vertex tests cover normal completion, request-creation failure, and early consumer return (src/api/providers/__tests__/anthropic-vertex.spec.ts:815-909), but no Vertex-focused test uses an async iterable that yields a chunk and then throws during iteration while asserting error propagation and listener removal. The generic stream-cleanup.spec.ts test does not exercise the Vertex handler path.

Resolution

Add a focused anthropic-vertex.spec.ts test with an external abort signal and an async iterable that yields one valid chunk, then throws. Assert that collectStream rejects with the stream error and that removeEventListener("abort", retainedListener) is called once with the retained listener. Keep the existing completion, request-creation failure, and early-return tests.

Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup

Explanation

The prior lifecycle leak remains in changed code. In src/api/providers/minimax.ts:90-97, bridgeExternalAbortSignal registers a listener before preprocessing. convertOpenAIToolsToAnthropic runs at line 123, outside the cleanup try at line 128, and src/core/prompts/tools/native-tools/converters.ts:28-32 throws for a non-function tool. With a live caller signal and such a tool, createMessage rejects while the listener and per-request controller remain attached. Vertex has the same ordering gap: its bridge at lines 90-97 precedes addCacheBreakpoints at line 121 and the try at line 137. Existing tests cover completion and request-creation failures, but not preprocessing failures.

Resolution

Create each abort bridge after synchronous preprocessing, or put all work after bridge creation inside a try/finally that calls the disposer. Add regression tests for MiniMax unsupported-tool preprocessing and Vertex cache-breakpoint preprocessing failures, with assertions that the external signal listener is removed.

…vertex, xai, minimax

- completePrompt: forward CompletePromptOptions abortSignal/timeoutMs into the SDK request for AnthropicHandler, AnthropicVertexHandler, XAIHandler, and MiniMaxHandler (request options built only when a signal/timeout is provided, preserving existing behavior)

- createMessage: bridge metadata?.abortSignal into a per-request AbortController using the Bedrock pattern (pre-aborted guard + { once: true } listener) and pass the internal signal as the SDK request signal; existing client-level timeout mechanisms are untouched

- xai: rethrow AbortError unmodified from createMessage/completePrompt so callers can detect error.name === 'AbortError'

- tests: port reference completePrompt signal/timeout propagation tests and add per-provider createMessage bridging tests (pre-aborted signal rejects with AbortError; mid-flight external abort cancels the request)
- anthropic.ts: use options?.timeoutMs !== undefined (was truthy) so a caller-supplied timeoutMs: 0 is forwarded to the SDK instead of silently dropped; all 4 family providers now share the same defined-check

- xai.ts: rethrow the OpenAI SDK's APIUserAbortError (exported from openai v5) unmodified from createMessage/completePrompt alongside native AbortError, since the SDK throws it when the request signal aborts and it would otherwise be mangled by handleOpenAIError

- tests: anthropic.spec.ts regression test asserting timeoutMs: 0 reaches the SDK as timeout: 0; xai.spec.ts exposes the real APIUserAbortError in the openai mock and asserts the SDK abort error surfaces as the same instance (unwrapped) through both createMessage and completePrompt

- xai.ts: declare the streaming request body as OpenAI.Responses.ResponseCreateParamsStreaming instead of Record<string, any>, so the full request shape (incl. include/reasoning) is typechecked against the SDK and the as any on the create() call is no longer needed

- xai.ts: type the stream as AsyncIterable<OpenAI.Responses.ResponseStreamEvent> (matching the codebase pattern in mimo.ts/openai.ts) and drop the as unknown as AsyncIterable<any> double cast, since the SDK create() streaming overload already returns an AsyncIterable stream

Series follow-up flag: adopt RequestConfigBuilder for abort/timeout option construction

This PR currently builds its abort/timeout request options directly with mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout(...) from src/api/providers/utils/abort-signal.ts. That is behaviorally identical to the RequestConfigBuilder path (src/api/providers/config-builder/request-config-builder.ts, introduced in #1008) - the builder wraps the same utility. The series plan is to make the builder the canonical call site for SDK request-option construction (typed TOptions variants per SDK), so this PR is flagged for that update.

Status: migration in the post-merge adoption PR. The refactor is mechanical (call-site substitution through the builder with a typed TOptions variant) and is deliberately kept out of this PR to preserve its already-green CI and review state.
Abort semantics (pre-abort fail-fast, mid-flight bridging, the timeoutMs > 0 guard, and normalization to AbortError) are pinned by this PR's regression tests and are preserved by the refactor.

Round 1 — final status: all checks green, changed-line coverage verified

Part of the abort-signal series addressing #404 (builds on #674, #901, #1008). anthropic-family abort wiring (anthropic, anthropic-vertex, xai, minimax).

Final verified 2026-08-20: all CI checks green on this head (0 pending / 0 failed), CodeRabbit review clean, and zero new bot findings after this commit.

  • Final head: af279dd62 (rebased onto main 252c69b52)
  • Work in this round: abort bridging across all four providers (request-local controllers, named listener cleanup in finally, catch normalization to AbortError); CodeRabbit minor fixed — the xai streaming body is now typed as OpenAI.Responses.ResponseCreateParamsStreaming (as any removed; no-explicit-any suppression count reduced 7→3).
  • Config builder: migration of the call sites to RequestConfigBuilder is scheduled for the post-merge adoption PR (see the config-builder status comment on this PR).
  • Changed-line coverage: 66/67 executable changed lines covered. The single uncovered line (anthropic.ts:215) is a structurally unreachable default: branch — the inner model switch's 18 labels are identical to the outer switch's, and the IIFE only executes inside an outer case block, so no test can execute it. The branch is retained as graceful degradation (it keeps the abort signal if a new model is ever added to only one of the two switches); the dedup cleanup is scheduled for the post-merge adoption PR.

CodeRabbit: the fractional-timeout test only proved the call did
not throw and eventually aborted - a round-down mutation (1.5 -> 1)
would still pass. The test now spies AbortSignal.timeout and pins
the received delay: 2 for 1.5 and 1 for 0.5 (never 0). Negative
control: mutating Math.ceil to Math.floor fails exactly this test.

The four completePrompt copies forwarded any defined timeoutMs. The Anthropic SDK turns timeout: 0 into an immediate abort and its request validation throws on negative, NaN and Infinity, so the series convention (timeoutMs <= 0 or non-finite means no explicit timeout) must leave the option absent. Fractional delays are rounded up, matching mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout.

hasUsableTimeout is the shared predicate: it also backs mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout, so the rule is single-sourced for both the option and the signal.

Normalize Anthropic SDK cancellations to AbortError.

The Anthropic handlers can rethrow APIUserAbortError with name === "Error" and message "Request was aborted.". This bypasses the shared AbortError contract. xai.ts already uses isRequestAborted and createAbortError for both request creation and stream iteration.

Apply the same normalization to the request and stream error paths in anthropic.ts, anthropic-vertex.ts, and minimax.ts. Preserve listener cleanup and avoid reporting normalized cancellations as provider failures.

The prior prompt-caching header behavior already covered every model in this branch. The four SDK option paths rounded fractional timeouts up but did not cap them, so an overflowing timeout would be clamped to 1 ms by Node. Add toSdkTimeoutMs (+ MAX_TIMEOUT_MS) next to hasUsableTimeout, use it in mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout and at all four provider sites, and cover the fractional/cap boundaries.

Review follow-ups: move the mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout JSDoc back above its function (MAX_TIMEOUT_MS and toSdkTimeoutMs now sit before it); the completePrompt timeout tests in the anthropic, anthropic-vertex, minimax and xai specs are now it.each cases covering a whole-number, a fractional (12.5 -> 13) and an over-cap (MAX+1 -> MAX) value, so forwarding the raw timeoutMs instead of calling toSdkTimeoutMs fails in every provider. Affected suites 364 passed.

Review follow-ups addressed in 7043629a5

Thanks for the review — both open threads are fixed and resolved:

  1. abort-signal.ts JSDoc placement — MAX_TIMEOUT_MS and toSdkTimeoutMs now sit above the mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout doc block, so the doc belongs to the function again.

  2. Timeout rounding/cap coverage — the completePrompt timeout test is now an it.each over:

    • a whole-number (3000 -> 3000),
    • a fractional (12.5 -> 13),
    • an over-cap (MAX_TIMEOUT_MS + 1 -> MAX_TIMEOUT_MS),

in the anthropic, anthropic-vertex, minimax and xai specs. Forwarding the raw timeoutMs instead of calling toSdkTimeoutMs now fails in every provider, not just anthropic.spec.ts.

api/providers + utils suites: 364 passed; Prettier clean. CI is re-running on the new head.
