This PR routes the interactive editor's save flows - the diff view's saveChanges and saveDirectly - through the guard, and fixes the ordering between a save and a teardown so a cancellation can never resurrect rolled-back content: when a teardown begins while a guarded publish is in flight, the rollback waits for the publish to settle and is provably the last writer; open() serializes with the previous session's finalization so a new edit session cannot start underneath an old cleanup.

The diff view is the highest-traffic write path in the extension. This is the eighth of nine PRs for epic #1375 (chain tracked on #1991).

Related GitHub Issue

Tracking: issue 2023 (this unit's tracking issue; deliberately not a closing reference - the maintainer closes it when the series lands).
Refs: #1991 (chain tracking), #1375 (epic).

Description

What this PR changes:

  1. saveChanges publishes through guardedWrite and registers the in-flight publish; a teardown that begins during the publish is honored after the publish settles (the save reports no completed edit rather than claiming one).
  2. revertChanges claims the cancellation first, then waits for the in-flight guarded publish before rolling back - the rollback is provably the last writer (verified with a barrier test).
  3. open() waits for a prior session's finalization or teardown before starting the new session, and the cancellation claim is cleared with the teardown marker on a clean start.
  4. saveDirectly forwards a caller-supplied completeness flag through the direct publish, so a tool-level write can state whether the destination was fully observed.

Why the diff looks bigger than the change: the chain is non-cumulative - this branch is based on main and carries its own copy of the earlier units' content (guarded-write core, observation registry, atomic publish, lock key), which the GitHub diff shows as context. This unit's own delta is 486 lines.

Review focus: src/integrations/editor/DiffViewProvider.ts (saveChanges, revertChanges, open) and the new tests in src/integrations/editor/__tests__/DiffViewProvider.spec.ts and src/core/tools/__tests__/guardedWrite.spec.ts.

Test Procedure

From the repository root, with dependencies installed:

pnpm --dir src exec vitest run --globals integrations/editor/__tests__/DiffViewProvider.spec.ts
pnpm --dir src exec vitest run --globals core/tools/__tests__/guardedWrite.spec.ts
pnpm --dir src exec eslint . --ext=ts --max-warnings=0

Environment: Windows 11, Node 20, unit layer only.

Pre-Submission Checklist

  • Scope is one gate scope and matches the unit.
  • No .changeset or CHANGELOG changes (AGENTS.md).
  • src/eslint-suppressions.json unchanged - no suppression count increased.
  • New code lints clean (--max-warnings=0) rather than relying on suppressions.
  • Tests added at the lowest layer that would have caught each finding.
  • Visual Snapshot item considered: not applicable (no rendered surface).

Visual Snapshots

Not applicable - no rendered surface change; the diff view looks identical.

Videos (interaction / animation only)

Not applicable.

Documentation Updates

No user-facing documentation change: no new setting, no new surface, no model-facing text. No .changeset and no CHANGELOG edit (AGENTS.md).

Additional Notes

Verification at this head

  • DiffViewProvider spec: 159 passed, 2 failed - both failures are donor-junction artifacts of the local harness (DEFAULT_WRITE_DELAY_MS resolves from a stale junctioned dist; CI test and compile are green at this head). guardedWrite spec: 63 passed.
  • Red-first + negative controls as described above; ESLint (the CI command, full src) exit 0; Prettier clean; suppressions unchanged.
  • CI: the push at this head fixes the lint-budget red at the previous head (nine as any casts in the new test exceeded the file's suppressed count; replaced with bracket notation and documented double casts, violation count back to the suppressed baseline).

Updated this round

  • Pushed fe6ff685d -> 36e3f86b: fixes the open CodeRabbit Major (save-lifecycle race at DiffViewProvider.ts:1096). The publish gate released when guardedWrite() settled, but a rejected save keeps working the same bytes and tabs afterwards: the adoption probe reads the disk and the discard cleanup reloads the buffer and closes the session's views. The whole rejected-save decision is now one registered pass (rejectedSaveCleanupInFlight) that revertChanges() waits on, and the discard cleanup records rejectedSaveCleanupHandled so a cancellation arriving after it finalizes the session without applying or saving originalContent (adoption-success rejections keep rollback-last). Regression tests: cancellation during the probe waits for the decision and keeps the rollback last; cancellation after the cleanup skips the rollback and finalizes exactly once. Negative controls: removing the gate await reddens only the probe test; removing the handled-session check reddens only the skip test.
  • Per AGENTS.md the two Stryker directives in DiffViewProvider.ts were removed with this touch. Equivalence notes for the mutation gate: (1) the writeKind default "update" - an empty kind dispatches exactly like "update" in guardedWrite (only "edit" and "create" branch distinctly); the default line itself is unchanged, so no mutant enters the changed-line selector. (2) the saveTask && operand in the adoption condition - GuardRejectedError is only thrown by guardedWrite, which is reached only after the !saveTask check has thrown a plain Error, so whenever the operand is evaluated saveTask is provably non-null; the moved condition lines are killed by the existing adoption-rejection tests (non-guard failure with matching disk, dirty buffer with matching disk, external-writer match).
  • Earlier round: 6485f0636 -> fe6ff685d lint-budget fix for the spec casts (no behavior change); description rewritten for human reviewers and linked to issue 2023.

Re-review round (5a04426)

Cleared the three re-review threads:

  1. Typed tests - the moved diagnostic/scroll blocks use bracket
notation for private members and documented structural doubles
(as unknown as vscode.TextEditor / TextDocument); the spec's
    no-explicit-any suppression count drops 310 -> 285, no additions.
  2. Report counting - the seed-descriptor "reported once" test now
counts matching console.error calls (exactly 1); the weaker second
toHaveBeenCalledWith and the stale "failed backup" comment are gone.
Negative control: a duplicated report reddens exactly this test.
  3. Symlink backup (security) - with publishOverLink the backup step
now lstats the target and takes no content backup for a symbolic
link: no referent bytes are copied, nothing is renamed back over the
link, and no copy is left beside it. Two regression tests (link: no
backup, commit lands; regular file: backup kept and cleaned).
Negative controls: guard disabled / !== true each redden exactly the
link test; dropping the lstat operand reddens exactly the
    regular-file test.

Equivalent mutant (no suppression, per AGENTS.md): dropping the
publishOverLink operand of the guard is equivalent, because without
publishOverLink the publish target is dereferenced by
resolvePublishTarget and can never be a symbolic link - the lstat
then always reports a non-link.

DACL-over-link refusal (3624e4f)

Re-review follow-up: a captured-DACL publish whose target is a symbolic
link (publishOverLink + lstat symlink + daclDumpPath set) is now
refused BEFORE the commit rename with a new DaclPublishRefusedError
(exported with the DaclCaptureError/DaclRestoreError family, same
shape): the rename would replace the link itself and the DACL restore
would apply the saved ACEs to the wrong object. The error states the
target is unchanged; neither /restore nor the restrictive fallback
runs. DaclCaptureError does not fit (capture succeeded);
DaclRestoreError does not (no rollback occurred).

Regression test + negative controls: refusal removed -> exactly the new
test reddens; refusal unconditional -> exactly the no-DACL linux
symlink test reddens (that path still publishes with no backup).

The refusal also updates safeWriteJson.lockKey.spec.ts (f23e49f):
its two unscoped symlink publishes previously pinned the old win32
publish-over-link-with-ACL behavior; they now branch on
process.platform (win32: DaclPublishRefusedError, locks still
serialized, /save only, link bytes untouched; linux: original
assertions unchanged).

Scope registration: the safeWriteJson carrier on this unit

The confinement, symlink lock-selection and platform-DACL expectations
in src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts and its tests are deliberate on this
unit, not scope drift. The guarded-write chain's unit map - tracking
issue 1991 - assigns this carrier here: its section "Port source:
folding a lock key the way the lock is placed (owed on U8, PR 1916)"
records the lock-key folding derived from U6 (PR 1915, commit
5131bc0) into U8 (this PR, commit 19aec00), including the owed
mixed-ancestor acceptance test; and the ownership ruling in the same
issue keeps primitive-level ports on the unit whose branch carries
that version of the primitive ("Inherited by any unit whose branch
carries this version of the primitive - U1 and U8 among them").
Removing the carrier from this PR would strand the port the tracking
issue owes on U8.

Walkthrough rows 1-4 (c6b3e86)

1. Out of Scope - sharpened pre-emption. The proposed resolution
("move the safeWriteJson changes to the file-safety unit") would
break the owed-port chain, not restore scope: the safeWriteJson
lock-key folding ON THIS BRANCH IS the port - tracking issue 1991,
section "Port source: folding a lock key the way the lock is placed
(owed on U8, PR 1916)", records it derived from U6 (PR 1915, commit
5131bc0) into U8 (this PR, commit 19aec00), with the owed
mixed-ancestor acceptance test tracked there. The file-safety unit
(U5, PR 1914) is the port SOURCE and merges before this unit in the
declared order; moving this carrier out of U8 strands the port the
tracking issue owes on U8 and deletes the derivation record's target.
Scope is deliberate per the unit map; no move.

2. Security Boundaries - standing TOCTOU window, registered. The
resolve/lock/version-check alias race in replaceIfVersion is the
standing confinement-primitive window, not a defect introduced here:
the check and the publish already run inside ONE acquisition of the
shared advisory lock keyed by resolveLockKey (a symlink alias and
its referent share one lock), and the primitive's docstring states the
atomicity boundary and the no-lock writer explicitly. Closing the
resolve-to-lock alias swap is the directory-identity pinning that is
U5's (PR 1914) content, which merges BEFORE this unit in the declared
order - the row resolves at merge time. Same family as the TOCTOU row
registered on PR 1918 (see record 6106959976 on 1408) and the
primitive-level ruling in tracking issue 1991.

3. Regression Evidence - fixed in c6b3e86. New spec
core/task/__tests__/Task.observationRegistry.spec.ts constructs two
REAL Task instances (same construction path as
Task.dispose.test.ts, startTask: false) and asserts both expose
ObservationRegistry, are NOT the same object, and that an
observation recorded on one is absent from the other. Negative
control: swapping the field initializer for a module-shared registry
reddens exactly this test (1 failed | 13 passed across the two
registry specs). The existing unit spec is untouched. 14/14 green,
eslint/prettier/tsc clean.

4. Lifecycle warning - registered, HOLD family. The
open()/reset() double-await race is the teardown-waiter family
recorded in tracking issue 1991, record 8 ("U9 teardown: the waiter
cannot tell whether the pass it waited for succeeded (PR 1917 / PR
1918 - fix once and port)"). The fix belongs to the U9 teardown
content and is owed there once; the carried copies on this unit
resolve at merge time in the declared order. Not a U8-level defect
per the same primitive-level ruling.

Preview-withdrawal port (82cfbf2)

The sibling unit's Major finding (preview observation surviving on the
non-edit exit paths) applies identically to the DiffViewProvider copy
this unit owns, so the fix is ported here as well (this unit merges
first): open() records the token its preview wrote;
performFinalReset() - the single execution point behind reset() -
forgets the entry while it still holds that token and the preview's
incomplete flag. Trigger-sequence test + two survival tests ported;
negative control: disabling the withdrawal reddens exactly the trigger
test. 166/166 green.

Ownership-based withdrawal (a00c5b7)

The withdrawal now tracks the exact entry object the preview wrote
({ path, entry } identity) instead of version+completeness: a model
partial read while the diff is open replaces the entry with a fresh
object at the same token and flag, and survives reset(). Regression
test + two NCs (each exactly one red). 167/167 green. Ported to the
sibling unit's identical copy (14f8634).

Re-review responses (error-fix re-review wave)

  • Publish token surfaced from guardedWrite (Major Data-Integrity): the
    guard now resolves with the token it read back under its lock;
saveChanges() records it as the rollback baseline and the comparison
prefers it over the create placeholder, so a session's own publish is never
mistaken for a peer write and a peer write is never silently overwritten.
New end-to-end spec case (real save -> peer stat change -> rollback
conflict); the two chain tests that pinned the old void contract now assert
    the returned token.
  • Per-session baseline (Major Data-Integrity): open() and
performFinalReset() clear the rollback baseline with the other session
fields; a reused provider cannot inherit the previous session's token and
report a false conflict. Two regression tests added.
  • Conflict path finalizes the session (Minor Stability): a rejected
rollback restores the evicted preview tabs and claims the finalization
before the conflict propagates; the peer-publish test now asserts the
session is finalized after the rejection.

Rollback publishes through a version-bound compare-and-swap (4e4cf7f)

The Persistence Integrity row: the existing-file rollback checked the
disk token and then applied the buffer through VS Code's save path - the
check was not bound to the publish, so a peer write landing after the
check was silently overwritten by originalContent. The rollback now
publishes the original bytes through replaceIfVersion: the version
check and the publish happen inside one acquisition of the shared
advisory lock, with lastWrittenToken as the expected version. A CAS
rejection preserves the peer's bytes and raises RollbackConflictError
naming the disk token it found; on success the buffer is reconciled by
reverting onto the published bytes instead of saving over them. Where
either side of the comparison is missing (never published, or no disk
version evidence) there is nothing to bind the publish to and the save
fallback remains, documented as such.

The create branch no longer saves the dirty diff buffer before the
delete - that save published the cancelled edit's content to disk for a
moment, unbound to the placeholder check - and unlinks only after the
placeholder identity/token check inside the lock.

Tests: the barrier test pauses the rollback's version read, lands a peer
publish inside the pause, and verifies the publish rejects with the
peer's bytes intact and the buffer untouched; a new test pins that the
create rollback deletes without saving first. Negative controls:
replacing the CAS with an unguarded publish reddens exactly the four
tests that pin the rejection contract; removing the buffer reconcile and
re-adding the pre-delete save each redden exactly one test. 174/174
green at this head.

Rollback evidence contract (096abc2)

The 05:51Z Persistence Integrity row implemented in full: every existing-file rollback publishes the original bytes through the atomic compare-and-swap; when the session baseline or the current disk version is unavailable the rollback preserves the disk state and raises RollbackConflictError instead of saving (the unguarded updatedDocument.save() fallback is removed); the create rollback unlinks only on a proven token match under the file lock - unknown ownership (identity-only or failed stat-bracketed open) or a mismatch preserves the path and the created directories and reports the conflict. The buffer is reconciled by reverting onto the CAS-published bytes. Tests: missing-baseline and missing-disk-evidence rollbacks, identity-only create peer replacement, plus the tab-close/ordering tests updated to the revert contract. 177/177 green; three negative controls pin the contract (evidence gate, create ownership, revert-vs-save).

The Security Boundaries alias row remains the registered ApplyDiffTool alias family (lands once at the publish-primitive owner; precedent record 6106959976, issue #1408).

Allowlist binding to the retained target (bf09481)

The 08:21Z Security Boundaries row implemented in full: replaceIfVersion and createIfAbsent take an authorizeTarget callback run under the lock on the RETAINED publish target before the version comparison and the publish; the guarded-write entry re-runs rooIgnoreController.validateAccess on the retained target, so a retargeted symlink or hard-link alias cannot receive approved bytes in an ignored/external file. Both identity locks (referent key + alias-entry key via resolveLinkPathLockKey) are taken in the shared sorted order when distinct. Tests: denial before version comparison, retained-target binding, end-to-end alias-passes/referent-ignored rejection, sorted dual-key acquisition, single-lock fold; four negative controls pin each element. 62/62 guardedWrite, 239/239 with the diff-view suites. The cited retained-target block exists only in this unit's copy; no U-family port applies.

The Regression Evidence row (safeWriteJson multi-lock cleanup test) remains carrier content: the test belongs to the safeWriteJson owner unit (scope registration above).

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • File reads indicate whether content is complete or partial, and report clipped lines or truncation.
    • JSON writes can be confined to a specified directory, including when paths involve symlinks.
    • File writes can create backups and report when content is committed but directory durability cannot be confirmed.
    • File observations are tracked separately for each task to support version-aware editing checks.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Edits check file versions before publishing and reject full-file replacements based on partial reads.
    • Concurrent writes to the same file are serialized.
    • Writes better preserve file permissions and existing content when publication fails, including during Windows permission handling.
    • Save failures no longer report success when changes were not published; conflicting rollbacks preserve newer disk changes.

Tasks now track stable file versions and read completeness. Task tools and diff-editor saves use guarded publication. safeWriteText stages and publishes files, while safeWriteJson resolves targets, supports optional path confinement, and delegates publication to safeWriteText.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description includes the related issues, implementation details, review focus, test commands, environment, checklist, visual-snapshot status, documentation impact, and additional notes. It is detailed and directly aligned with the pull request objectives.

Full details: Persistence Integrity

Explanation

The prior data-loss claim is not present in the reviewed code. tempPath is assigned to the staging path at safeWriteText.ts:532-535 and is never reassigned. After fs.rename(tempPath, targetPath) at line 808, the failure cleanup at line 937 therefore unlinks the old staging pathname, not targetPath; a post-commit fsync error at line 841 leaves the committed target in place. Caller-supplied staging paths are also checked against the target before publication. The guarded editor path awaits safeWriteText and records the landed token on failure. Prior failure refuted: The claimed tempPath == targetPath state is false: current code assigns a separate staging pathname and never reassigns it after rename. Cleanup therefore cannot unlink the committed target.

Full details: Security Boundaries

Explanation

The new guarded path can bypass workspace containment for a new file under a symlinked directory. In guardedWrite.ts:186-190, fixedPublishTarget() falls back to the lexical path on ENOENT. In safeWriteText.ts:350-364, the same fallback only lstats the final component. If /workspace/link points to /outside and /outside/new.txt does not exist, the retained target remains /workspace/link/new.txt; isInsideDirectory() passes, but safeWriteText.ts:469-474,807-809 creates and renames through the symlink, writing /outside/new.txt. A tool can approve link/new.txt, then saveDirectly() routes the approved content through this path (DiffViewProvider.ts diff at the new guardedWrite call). This sends approved bytes outside the workspace and bypasses the intended containment boundary.

Resolution

Resolve missing targets by canonicalizing the deepest existing ancestor and appending missing components. Recheck that canonical parent and target remain inside the workspace under the write lock. Pass the fixed canonical target to safeWriteText; do not create directories or rename through an unresolved alias. Add a regression test for an in-workspace symlinked directory with an absent external target.

Full details: Regression Evidence

Explanation

The prior regression remains unresolved. safeWriteJson.ts:294-303 now acquires multiple locks and releases already acquired locks when a later acquisition fails. The new lock-key tests cover successful two-lock acquisition and reverse release (safeWriteJson.lockKey.spec.ts:226-252, :300-325), while the existing failure test covers only the first and only lock (safeWriteJson.test.ts:370-392). No test makes the second acquireFileLock call reject and verifies partial cleanup and propagation of the original error.

Resolution

Add a focused test in src/utils/__tests__/safeWriteJson.lockKey.spec.ts for an unscoped symlink write with two distinct lock keys. Make the second acquireFileLock call reject. Assert that the first release runs, the original rejection propagates, and no lock or staging residue remains.

Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup

Explanation

The changed DiffViewProvider.open() lifecycle path can leak the new session's listeners and deferred timer. At lines 229-230, open() awaits optional promises without reserving a transition. If both are undefined, open() yields; an immediate reset() then starts performFinalReset() and sets finalizationInFlight at lines 2050-2051. The resumed open() does not recheck that state, so it can install the editor listeners and schedule deferredScrollTimer at lines 467-488 and 1947-1952. The reset started before those resources existed, so its disposal at lines 2086-2087 cannot remove them. After its closeOwnDiffView() await, it clears provider fields at lines 2098-2121, losing the references. The stale listeners remain registered, and the timer remains scheduled. The added test covers a pre-existing finalization promise, not this no-promise interleaving. This is introduced by the changed open/reset coordination.

Resolution

Reserve a transition mutex or queue before open() performs its first await, and make reset() join that transition. Alternatively, add session-generation ownership so an old reset cannot clear a newer session, and ensure the active session disposes its listeners and deferred timer. Add a regression test that starts open() with no lifecycle promise, starts and blocks reset() during the initial await, lets open() install listeners and schedule the deferred timer, then verifies the new session remains active and its own reset disposes all resources.

…cked version

The existing-file rollback checked the disk token and then applied the
buffer through VS Code's save path: the check was not bound to the
publish, so a peer write landing after the check was silently overwritten
by originalContent. The rollback now publishes the original bytes through
replaceIfVersion - the version check and the publish inside one
acquisition of the shared advisory lock, with lastWrittenToken as the
expected version. A CAS rejection preserves the peer's bytes and raises
RollbackConflictError naming the disk token it found; on success the
buffer is reconciled by reverting onto the published bytes instead of
saving over them. Without a version on either side (never published, or
no disk evidence) there is nothing to compare, and the save fallback
remains documented as such. The create branch no longer saves the dirty
diff buffer before the delete - that save published the cancelled edit's
content for a moment, unbound to the placeholder check - and unlinks only
after the placeholder identity check inside the lock. A barrier test
pauses the rollback's version read, lands a peer publish inside the
pause, and verifies the peer's bytes remain.

Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.

The rollback still had unguarded paths: when the session had no baseline
(a guarded publish whose token read failed) or the disk reported no
version, it fell back to updatedDocument.save() - an unguarded publish
that overwrites any peer write landing in that window with
originalContent. The create branch unlinked whenever its token check was
inconclusive: a create that recorded only a placeholder identity could
delete a peer replacement it never saw.

The existing-file rollback now requires both sides of the version
comparison - the token this session left and the version the disk
reports - and publishes the original bytes through replaceIfVersion in
all cases. Without either side it preserves the disk state and raises
RollbackConflictError naming what it found, instead of saving. The
create rollback unlinks only on a proven token match: unknown ownership
(placeholder token unavailable) or a mismatch preserves the path and
the created directories and reports the conflict.

Tests: missing-baseline and missing-disk-evidence rollbacks assert the
conflict and the preserved disk; an identity-only create asserts the
peer replacement and directories survive; the tab-close and rollback-
ordering tests now observe the revert reconcile. Negative controls:
removing the evidence gate reddens the two baseline-conflict tests,
relaxing the create ownership check reddens exactly the identity-only
test, and reverting the reconcile to a save reddens the four tests that
pin it. 177/177 green.

Disposition update for the 05:51Z walkthrough rows (comment 5994217906, head 4e4cf7f68)

Security Boundaries (ApplyDiffTool alias family) — the row repeats the allowlist-bypass/alias concern (ApplyDiffTool validates relPath once; replaceIfVersion locks the original resolveLockKey result). This is the ApplyDiffTool alias family already registered in this PR's body: binding the validated alias and referent across the complete guarded operation is the guardedWrite/publish-primitive owner unit's scope (ancestor-swap family, precedent record 6106959976, issue #1408); this unit consumes the primitive and reconciles at rebase. Evidence grade: registered-family repeat.

Persistence Integrity (rollback unsafe when version evidence is unavailable) — implemented this round at head 096abc263, exactly per the row's Resolution: every existing-file rollback now publishes through the atomic CAS; when lastWrittenToken or the current disk version is unavailable the rollback preserves the disk state and raises RollbackConflictError (no updatedDocument.save() fallback remains); the create branch's ownership check runs under the file lock and unlinks only on a proven token match — unknown ownership (identity-only or failed stat-bracketed open) or mismatch preserves the path and the created directories and reports the conflict. Tests added per the Resolution: missing-token rollback, missing-disk-evidence rollback, and peer-replaced placeholder after an identity-only create (no unlink, no rmdir). 177/177 green; negative controls: removing the evidence gate reddens the two baseline-conflict tests, relaxing create ownership reddens exactly the identity-only test, reverting the reconcile to a save reddens the four tests that pin it.

Learning: In src/integrations/editor/DiffViewProvider.ts, DiffViewProvider.open() intentionally records a stat-matched preview observation with complete=false only when the task has no existing observation for the path. Existing model-read observations must remain unchanged so accepted saves detect changes since the model read. 1304-1304: The CAS rollback still publishes originalContent as UTF-8, not in the document encoding.

replaceIfVersion receives a string here. safeWriteText converts it with Buffer.from. The forward save encodes with vscode.workspace.encode(…, { encoding: updatedDocument.encoding }). For a non-UTF-8 document, the rollback therefore writes different bytes from the original. The earlier review comment on this line is still open.

…sh target

The apply-diff save path validated only the caller's alias: the tool
layer ran validateAccess on relPath, while the guard resolved that alias
under the lock and published the resolved target without re-running the
access decision. A symlink retargeted after the tool's check - or a
hard-link alias whose new referent keeps the expected version token -
could therefore receive the approved bytes in an ignored or external
file. The guard also held only the referent lock, so a protocol writer
that swaps the link entry itself was not serialized against the publish.

replaceIfVersion and createIfAbsent now take an authorizeTarget
callback, run under the lock on the RETAINED publish target before the
version comparison and the publish, and take both identity locks - the
referent key and the alias-entry key (resolveLinkPathLockKey, the same
pair and folding safeWriteJson's dual-link path uses) - in the shared
sorted order when they differ. The guarded-write entry passes a callback
that re-runs rooIgnoreController.validateAccess on the retained target,
so the allowlist decision covers the exact file the publish acts on; the
retained target is what safeWriteText already receives, unchanged.

Tests: denial before the version comparison (no token read, no publish),
the decision running on the retained target rather than the alias, the
end-to-end alias-passes/referent-ignored rejection through guardedWrite,
and the sorted dual-key acquisition with the single-lock fold case.
Negative controls: removing either authorize call reddens its path's
tests, authorizing the alias instead of the retained target reddens
exactly the binding test, and dropping to a single referent lock reddens
exactly the sorted-order test. 62/62 guardedWrite, 239/239 with the
diff-view suites.

Learning: In Zoo-Code's TypeScript src/core/tools/guardedWrite.ts, post-commit durability reconciliation belongs in the shared guardedWrite publication flow because DiffViewProvider.saveDirectly() bypasses saveChanges() error handling. createIfAbsent() and replaceIfVersion() collect the landed version token under the publication lock. guardedWrite() uses that token to refresh the task observation, preserves partial completeness for targeted edits, and rethrows the original PostCommitDurabilityError. Pre-commit failures and failed post-publish token reads must leave the previous observation unchanged.

Security Boundaries (apply-diff allowlist bypass) - new concrete claim, implemented this round at head bf094813c, per the row's Resolution: replaceIfVersion and createIfAbsent now take an authorizeTarget callback run under the lock on the RETAINED publish target before the version comparison and the publish; the guarded-write entry passes a callback that re-runs rooIgnoreController.validateAccess on the retained target, so a symlink retargeted after the tool's alias check - or a hard-link alias whose new referent keeps the expected token - cannot receive the approved bytes in an ignored or external file. The primitives now acquire BOTH identity locks - the referent key and the alias-entry key via resolveLinkPathLockKey (the same pair and folding safeWriteJson's dual-link path uses) - in the shared sorted order when they differ. The retained target was already what safeWriteText receives (no re-resolve of the alias at the guard layer). Tests: denial before the version comparison, decision bound to the retained target (not the alias), end-to-end alias-passes/referent-ignored rejection, sorted dual-key acquisition, single-lock fold case. Negative controls: removing either authorize call reddens its path's tests; authorizing the alias instead of the retained target reddens exactly the binding test; a single referent lock reddens exactly the sorted-order test. 62/62 guardedWrite, 239/239 with the diff-view suites. Note: the retained-target block the row cites exists only in this unit's guardedWrite.ts copy (the U5/U6/U7/U9 copies have structurally different guard plumbing), so no U-family port applies; reconciliation happens at rebase.

Regression Evidence (multi-lock partial-acquisition cleanup test) - the flagged code (safeWriteJson.ts:294-304) and its spec are carrier content on this unit: safeWriteJson is owned by the safeWriteJson owner unit (scope registration in this PR body), and the focused second-acquireFileLock-rejects test belongs there, where the dual-lock acquisition it exercises was authored. Evidence grade: carrier content, owner-unit disposition; no new claim about this unit's own code.

replaceIfVersion takes bytes while the rollback passed originalContent (a string), which safeWriteText would UTF-8-encode: for a non-UTF-8 document a cancelled edit restored different bytes than the forward save wrote. The rollback now encodes through vscode.workspace.encode with the document encoding, falling back to UTF-8 where the host does not expose it.
…stead of a false conflict, and contain retained targets

Create rollback: update() leaves the preview dirty and both close helpers skip dirty tabs, so the cancelled content stayed in an open tab over a file that no longer exists - one Save away from recreating it. The buffer is now discarded by reloading the empty placeholder (no disk write) before the unlink; a failed reload keeps the placeholder and reports the hazard.

Modify rollback: when the session never recorded a publish version but the disk still carries the version open() read, there is no peer content to protect - the buffer is reloaded and the session finalized instead of raising RollbackConflictError. The conflict path stays for a missing/changed disk version or a failed reload.

guardedWrite: authorizeTarget now also enforces workspace containment, so a workspace symlink retargeted to an external file cannot send the approved bytes outside task.cwd (validateAccess only covers .rooignore).

Tests: create-rollback discards via the workbench revert before deleting; the no-baseline rollback now resolves with the revert command and finalization; guardedWrite allowlist cases for edit/update; a retained target outside the workspace is rejected.
The production dead-code check reports resetChain as unused because only tests reset the per-path chains; @internal is the supported mechanism for a test-only export.

…nsumed

The failure cleanup unlinked the staging path unconditionally. After the commit rename that name no longer belongs to this write - a caller-supplied staging name is reused by the next write to the same target - so a post-commit durability or DACL failure could delete an unrelated file, and re-unlinking the vanished staging name was pointless at best. The write now records whether the rename completed and skips the staging unlink once it has; the target is never touched by the failure cleanup.

Tests: a post-commit durability failure leaves the published file in place and does not unlink the staging name; negative control (always running the cleanup) fails that test.

Learning: In Zoo-Code's src/core/tools/guardedWrite.ts, retained-target workspace containment applies when the caller's alias is inside task.cwd. Aliases already outside task.cwd remain permitted, subject to existing authorization. The TypeScript isInsideDirectory helper uses normalized forward-slash paths and case-insensitive comparisons on Windows without relying on path.relative, which test doubles may omit.

Preview observations are not complete model reads; review preview version tracking separately from edit authorization.

…finish the discard-and-return rollback

resolvePublishTarget returns a real path while absolutePath is lexical, so a workspace path with a symlinked ancestor compared a real target against a lexical root and could reject an in-workspace write. The containment check now canonicalizes both the workspace root and the caller's alias (lexical fallback when the filesystem cannot resolve them).

DiffViewProvider's no-baseline discard-and-return branch skipped keepOrCloseEditedFile(), so a file that was open before the edit stayed closed and unpinned and the auto-close preferences were not applied; it now runs the same tail as the normal modify rollback.

Tests: containment boundaries (sibling prefix, ../ escape, alias already outside the workspace), plus the fs doubles' realpath stub the canonicalization needs.
