Closes: #1665

Description

  • Convert persisted reasoning and thinking blocks into Bedrock Converse reasoningContent instead of the literal [Unknown Block Type] placeholder, for Bedrock models that set preserveReasoning (Kimi K2 Thinking, MiniMax M2). For other Bedrock models, including Claude, these blocks are dropped. This matches how Task already strips plain reasoning blocks, and covers signed thinking blocks, which bypass that filter after a mid-task provider switch.
  • Replay reasoning to Bedrock without a signature. Bedrock does not capture its own signatures yet, so any stored signature was issued by another provider (MiniMax) and would fail Bedrock's verification. signature is optional in the Converse API.
  • Capture MiniMax signature_delta events so the task history can store valid signed thinking blocks for the next tool-loop request.
  • Sanitize MiniMax requests with the existing Anthropic block allowlist: valid signed thinking is preserved while legacy internal reasoning blocks are removed.
  • Keep Claude signature capture out of scope; tracked in Preserve Claude extended-thinking signatures across tool-loop steps #1837.

MiniMax's Anthropic-compatible API requires replaying the complete signed thinking block unchanged. Capturing its streamed signature preserves continuity without sending an unsupported internal block shape.

Test Procedure

Using the repository-required Node.js 22.23.1:

pnpm --dir src exec vitest run \
  api/transform/__tests__/bedrock-converse-format.spec.ts \
  api/transform/__tests__/anthropic-filter.spec.ts \
  api/providers/__tests__/minimax.spec.ts \
  api/providers/__tests__/bedrock.spec.ts \
  core/task/__tests__/apiConversationHistory.spec.ts \
  --maxWorkers=4
pnpm --dir src check-types
pnpm --dir src exec eslint --prune-suppressions --max-warnings=0 \
  api/transform/bedrock-converse-format.ts \
  api/transform/__tests__/bedrock-converse-format.spec.ts \
  api/providers/bedrock.ts \
  api/providers/__tests__/bedrock.spec.ts \
  api/providers/minimax.ts \
  api/providers/__tests__/minimax.spec.ts

Results: all Bedrock and MiniMax provider/transform suites passed (265 tests after the review follow-ups); type checking and ESLint passed. Suppression counts did not increase. No live Bedrock or MiniMax request was made.

206-207: 🩺 Stability & Availability

The comment's concern is not a defect in the changed code. It asks for live Bedrock acceptance of unsigned MiniMax reasoning replay, which the inspected repository evidence cannot establish or refute. The test is at the correct layer for request construction, and the PR's stated behavior (replaying reasoning without signatures for Bedrock models with preserveReasoning) is intentional. The comment does not identify a concrete changed-code failure, and it asks for a live request that a PR review cannot require.

src/api/providers/minimax.ts: 1

220-220: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration

Do not require per-block signature storage based on this concern.

The local code would keep only the final signature if a response contained multiple signed thinking blocks. However, no MiniMax contract or repository evidence establishes that MiniMax emits multiple signed thinking blocks. The concern remains an unsupported provider-behavior hypothesis.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • MiniMax now retains streamed reasoning and its associated signature when available.
    • Bedrock preserves reasoning in supported conversation continuations; models without reasoning preservation continue to omit it.
  • Bug Fixes
    • MiniMax requests omit legacy unsigned reasoning blocks while retaining supported content.
    • Thought signatures are cleared between messages, preventing an earlier signature from carrying over.
    • Reasoning-only Bedrock messages remain valid when reasoning content is filtered out.

Bedrock now converts supported reasoning and thinking blocks during history replay when the model enables preserveReasoning. MiniMax filters unsupported message blocks and captures streamed thought signatures.

Changes: Reasoning preservation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Bedrock reasoning conversion
src/api/transform/bedrock-converse-format.ts, src/api/transform/__tests__/bedrock-converse-format.spec.ts
The converter maps reasoning and thinking text to Bedrock reasoning content when preservation is enabled and the conversation continues within a tool loop. Otherwise, it filters those blocks and inserts placeholder text when conversion leaves no content. Thinking signatures are not forwarded. Tests cover preserved and filtered blocks.
Bedrock provider integration
src/api/providers/bedrock.ts, src/api/providers/__tests__/bedrock.spec.ts
The Bedrock provider enables reasoning preservation only when modelInfo.preserveReasoning is exactly true. A history-replay test checks that MiniMax thinking text is included and Claude thinking text is omitted.
MiniMax reasoning handling
src/api/providers/minimax.ts, src/api/providers/__tests__/minimax.spec.ts
MiniMax filters non-Anthropic blocks before requests, resets and captures streamed thought signatures, and exposes the latest signature through getThoughtSignature(). Tests cover signature capture, reset between requests, and filtering legacy reasoning blocks.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #1665 requirements are met. Bedrock now converts persisted reasoning and thinking blocks to unsigned reasoningContent only when preserveReasoning is true. It drops these blocks for other Bedrock models and uses [Reasoning omitted] when filtering would leave an empty turn. MiniMax now applies filterNonAnthropicBlocks, captures signature_delta, and exposes the signature for the next tool-loop request. Tests cover Bedrock gating and conversion, MiniMax filtering, and signature lifecycle. Claude signature capture remains outside #1665.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes are limited to Bedrock conversion and provider wiring, MiniMax filtering and signature capture, and supporting tests. These changes directly implement issue #1665. No unrelated product, configuration, documentation, release, or workflow changes are shown.

Full details: Regression Evidence

Explanation

Focused regression coverage is present. The Bedrock converter tests cover reasoning and thinking conversion, signature removal, default filtering, reasoning-only placeholders, tool-result continuation, and stopping before a new user message. Bedrock provider tests cover the preserveReasoning true/false model gate with actual Converse payloads. MiniMax provider tests cover signature capture, stale-signature clearing, and removal of legacy reasoning while retaining signed thinking and text. No UI change requires a Playwright snapshot.

Full details: Security Boundaries

Explanation

No changed path meets the security failure conditions. src/api/providers/minimax.ts:109 now applies filterNonAnthropicBlocks, whose allowlist keeps only known Anthropic block types and removes internal or unknown blocks before the MiniMax request. src/api/transform/bedrock-converse-format.ts:57-91 forwards only typed reasoning text, and src/api/providers/bedrock.ts:987-989 enables it only for catalog models with preserveReasoning === true; it does not execute the content or forward the stored signature. The changes introduce no secret or PII sink, input execution, or approval bypass.

Full details: Persistence Integrity

Explanation

No changed persistence-integrity failure is present. The PR changes request conversion and an in-memory MiniMax signature field; it does not add a persistence write. The existing Task path reads the signature, builds the assistant history entry, and awaits addToApiConversationHistory, which awaits saveApiConversationHistory and its retry path. The Bedrock preserveReasoning option is passed directly from model metadata to the request converter, so no persisted default is left unpropagated.

Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup

Explanation

No changed lifecycle failure exists. The PR only adds synchronous message filtering/conversion in Bedrock and MiniMax, plus MiniMax signature state. The MiniMax stream still uses the existing withFinallyCleanup(stream, removeExternalAbortListener) path, and request creation still removes the bridged abort listener on failure. The new signature_delta case records data and does not create a listener, timer, watcher, task, or provider resource. No changed path can leak a resource or duplicate work after cancellation, disposal, or restart.

Reporter of #1665. This covers the report: reasoning blocks become Bedrock reasoningContent
instead of [Unknown Block Type], and the MiniMax signature is captured for replay. The wiring
checks out — getThoughtSignature() matches the hook read by prepareAssistantMessage, and
thinking is in VALID_ANTHROPIC_BLOCK_TYPES, so the new filter does not strip what it
preserves.

Two points:

  1. Signatures issued by another backend. AWS documents signature as a token verifying the
text was generated by the model, and requires it replayed "unmodified". When a task switches
providers mid-conversation, the stored signature came from elsewhere. Does Bedrock reject
it? If so, replaying only same-provider signatures would avoid a 400 on that path.
(Unsigned blocks are fine: signature is Required: No.)

  2. Follow-up link. Claude signature capture is deferred, which matches the issue — linking
that follow-up from [BUG] Reasoning content is corrupted mid-task on Bedrock, and passed through unsanitized on MiniMax #1665 keeps the remaining half visible after this merges.

PierrunoYT and others added 2 commits September 28, 2026 19:03
Bedrock never captures its own reasoning signatures, so any signature
stored on a thinking block was issued by another provider (MiniMax) and
would fail Bedrock's verification after a mid-task provider switch.
Replay the reasoning text unsigned instead; `signature` is optional.

The unsigned Bedrock replay concern is undecidable from the available evidence.

The code does emit a reasoningText block without signature for the Bedrock MiniMax model. However, AWS marks signature as optional in the request shape, while its replay guidance concerns signatures returned by Bedrock. The available source does not establish how Bedrock handles a signature originally issued by MiniMax, and no live ConverseStream result is available. The proposed fallback is therefore not established as necessary or safe.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Stop reasoning replay at a new user message.

When history contains signed MiniMax thinking followed by a new user text message, this option still replays the earlier thinking. The test’s "next" message demonstrates that path, but issue #1665 limits continuity to the tool loop and expects reasoning to be dropped across new user messages. Keep replay for a following tool_result, and add a new-user boundary test.

Review comment at @src/api/providers/bedrock.ts at line 986:
Update the preserveReasoning decision in the Bedrock history handling so signed
MiniMax reasoning is replayed through a tool_result continuation but not across
a subsequent user text message; add a test covering the new-user boundary while
preserving the existing tool-loop behavior.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Do not replace filtered reasoning with an empty text block.

If a message contains only reasoning and preserveReasoning is false, this branch sends { text: "" } to Bedrock. Bedrock rejects blank text blocks with a ValidationException, so the request and retries fail for that history. Use a nonblank fallback or omit the message when the conversation structure permits it. Update the test at src/api/transform/__tests__/bedrock-converse-format.spec.ts:84-87, which currently requires the invalid payload. Reported Converse failures confirm the blank-text rejection. Update the reasoning-only message handling in the Bedrock Converse
transformation so filtering reasoning when preserveReasoning is false never
produces the invalid empty { text: "" } block. Omit the message when the
conversation structure allows it, or use an established nonblank fallback, and
update the related bedrock-converse-format test expectation accordingly.
