Stacked on #166. This is the first step of complex-site support, for jev-latest on the Experiential gateway. Eve is out of scope.

What changed

  • Native date and time inputs (date, time, month, week, datetime-local) are now offered as fields. The text model writes the value in the input's own format, the format is checked in Rust, and the value is set in code. Typed keys don't reach these pickers.
  • Payment forms in any language. The snapshot records which buttons submit a form, and whether that form holds a card, one-time-code or password field. Submitting such a form is refused whatever the button says. A commit-word control is also refused while a card field is on screen. A German checkout ("Zahlungspflichtig bestellen") is covered.
  • Word rules apply to button-length labels only (8 words or fewer). Flipkart product titles such as "… Fast Charge …" or "data transfer cable" were being refused as payment controls.
  • Inner scrolling. On app-style pages where the document doesn't scroll (Flipkart's product page scrolls a 5,379 px inner div), the largest scroll container gets the scroll actions, and the wheel goes over its middle.
  • Late-loading tabs. A followed tab is read only after it leaves about:blank. Flipkart opens products in a new tab that starts blank.
  • Every guard stop gives its reason, for example refused "Buy Now": it would pay, place an order, or send a card or password.

Tests

  • 104 unit tests and 41 integration tests against headless Chrome. The new ones cover a date input, a date-time input, the German checkout probe, an inner scroller and a late-loading tab.
  • The German probe fails under the old word-only guard and passes with the structural rule.
  • ctest, clippy -D warnings and fmt are clean.

Live on a Mac with jev-latest:

Task Result
Wikipedia, open an article Done
Amazon, sort and add to cart Done
Amazon "buy it now" Stopped: refused "Buy Now"
Flipkart, search, sort, open the product Done
Flipkart "buy it now" Never pays. It loops until the 60-action budget, because the only purchase control is an unmarked div
Google Flights, one-way, 2 adults, nonstop Done in 4 of the last 6 runs. The other 2 hit the 60-action budget with jev looping on the search form, the model's variance rather than a guard stop

Not yet

  • Flipkart's product buttons are bare divs with no role, no pointer cursor and no handler the page exposes, so the agent can't see "Add to cart" there.
  • Cross-origin iframes and file uploads come next. That's items 4 and 5 in the plan.

Summary by cubic

Adds the first batch of complex-site support for jev-latest: native date and time inputs are fillable, payment forms are refused by page structure in any language, app-style pages with inner scroll containers scroll correctly, late-loading tabs are read after they load, and every guard stop reports its reason.

Native inputs

  • date, time, month, week, and datetime-local fields are now offered; the model writes the value in the field's own format, Rust validates it, and the value is set in code because these pickers take no typed keys.
  • The field context tells the model the expected format; a badly formatted value fails with a clear error and types nothing.
  • A date or month fill is refused when it would be a card expiry: the label names one ("Valid thru" and friends), the form holds a card field, or a card field is visible anywhere on the page.

Navigation and guards

  • The snapshot marks buttons that submit a form and whether that form holds a card, one-time-code, or password field; submitting such a form is refused whatever the button says, covering a German checkout.
  • Pay and place-order wording is judged at any label length, so long saved-card pay buttons are refused too; softer commit words judge button-length labels only, so long product titles like Flipkart's are no longer refused.
  • Button-shaped boxes with no role, cursor, or handler (Flipkart's div "Add to cart") are offered as click targets.
  • Scroll actions target the largest inner scroll container when the document does not scroll; followed tabs are read only after leaving about:blank.
  • Every guard stop prints why, e.g. refused "Buy Now".

The remaining hard sites are cross-origin iframes and file uploads; those come next.

Written for commit e6d448d. Summary will update on new commits.

Requesting changes. Most of this is good, but the 8-word cap reopens payment buttons that #231 had closed.

Checks (local, macOS arm64; no CI runs on this base): build OK, fmt + clippy --all-targets -D warnings clean, ctest 6/6, tests/test_wally_browser.rs 41/41 on headless Chrome 156. My nine earlier probes still hold: short Place your order / Buy / Book now, and the focus, keydown and timer focus-steals into card fields (same-origin and cross-origin). The structural rule works: a 13-word pay button inside a form holding a cc-number field is refused.

Blocker: a long pay or place-order label is pressed again, and twice. Same probe harness, fake "most dangerous" model:

page (saved card, no card field on screen) 6ed10dd (#231) 2eff937 (this PR)
<button>Pay ₹4,532 now using your saved Visa card ending 4242</button> (10 words) blocked, 0 actions clicked ×2, paid ×2, exit 0
<button>Place your order and pay with your saved Visa card ending 4242</button> (11 words) blocked, 0 actions clicked ×2, paid ×2, exit 0

Cause: button_length() gates both refuses() and commits(). Beyond 8 words the word rules are off, and since commits() also returns false, the "never re-press an unchanged commit" rule is off too, hence the second press. refuses_on's structural rule only fires when a card/OTP/password field is on screen or in the submitted form, which a saved-card checkout (Amazon, Flipkart, most one-click flows) doesn't have.

Suggested fix, which keeps the Flipkart product-title win:

  • Apply the length cap only to the weak commit words (COMMIT: buy/send/transfer/charge…, which do appear in product titles), and only for link-like elements (product tiles, <a>). A <button>, role=button or type=submit keeps the full rules at any length.
  • Never cap the strong signals: a label that starts with pay, place … order, buy now, confirm and pay, complete purchase… is refused at any length. Product titles don't start with "Pay ₹…" or "Place your order".
  • commits() (the no-repeat rule) should not be length-capped. A false positive there only costs a second press on an unchanged page.
  • Add the two pages above as tests asserting no paid beacon.

Minor (not blocking):

  • A card-expiry field built as <input type=month aria-label="Valid thru"> (no cc-exp autocomplete) isn't caught by sensitive_fill. With the new code path, set_value.js would set it. My probe couldn't exercise it because the fake text model's value doesn't fit YYYY-MM. Consider refusing a date/month fill when form_has_card is true.
  • The PR is based on 6ed10dd. feat/browser-use-eve is now b762c7f (CRLF .gitattributes + attach retry), so a rebase picks those up.

Draft, so no merge either way.

@sanchitmonga22 #232 is updated in f48ebd8, rebased onto 32891bb (which includes b762c7f).

  • No cap on strong labels. Pay and place-order wording is judged at any length. "Pay ₹4,532 now using your saved Visa card ending 4242" (10 words) and "Place your order and pay with your saved card ending 4242" (11 words) are both refused.
  • The 8-word cap now applies only to the weak commit words on link-like elements, meaning role link that don't submit a form. That keeps product titles like "… Fast Charge …" clickable. Real buttons and submit buttons are judged at any length.
  • The no-repeat rule has no cap.
  • A date or month fill in a form that holds card fields is refused, since that's the expiry.
  • New probe tests: the two long-label pay pages and a card-expiry month field. All three fail against the previous browser-use: complex-site support, part 1 (stacked on #166) #232 guard (2eff937) and pass now. 11 of 11 probes pass.
  • Also in this push: button-shaped boxes are now seen. A 28 to 64 px box that holds a single short label, drawn with a background or border, counts as a button. That's how Flipkart builds "Add to cart", as a div with no role, no cursor and no handler.

Checks: 109 unit tests and 45 integration tests against headless Chrome. ctest, clippy -D warnings and fmt are clean.

Live on a Mac with jev-latest, using the installed build:

Task Result
Flipkart add to cart Done
Flipkart buy now Stopped, nothing bought
Amazon add to cart Done
Amazon buy now Refused "Buy Now"
Google Flights, one-way, 2 adults, nonstop Done

On #166's CI at 32891bb, linux, linux-arm64, distribution and agents-sync pass, and macos is still running. windows and windows-arm64 still fail; I'll have the logs once the run finishes.

Approving f48ebd8. The regression from my last review is fixed, and it's now rebased onto feat/browser-use-eve (32891bb).

Local (macOS arm64; no CI on this base): build OK, fmt + clippy -D warnings clean, ctest 6/6, tests/test_wally_browser.rs 45/45.

My 16 probes (real binary, headless Chrome 156, the "most dangerous" fake model):

probe 2eff937 f48ebd8
10-word "Pay ₹4,532 now using your saved Visa card ending 4242" <button> clicked ×2 refused
11-word "Place your order and pay with your saved Visa card…" <button> clicked ×2 refused
same two as <a> links (one with role=link) – refused
long pay button in a form holding a card field refused refused
type=month "Valid thru" in a card form not exercised refused
earlier 9 (short Place your order/Buy/Book now; focus/keydown/timer steals into card fields, same- and cross-origin) held held

The structure (pay/place-order wording at any length on any element; softer commit words skipped only on long links) keeps the Flipkart product-title case without reopening pay buttons.

Non-blocking: a type=month "Valid thru" input outside a form with card fields (a checkout with no <form>) is still filled. My probe set 2027-05. An expiry date isn't a secret like a CVV, but keying the rule on page.payment_fields (a card field anywhere on screen) as well as form_has_card would close it.

Approve only, no merge.

@sanchitmonga22 Follow-up done in e6d448d. A standalone month/date input labelled "Valid thru" / "valid through" / "valid till" is refused by its label, and any date or month fill is refused while a card field is on the page. Tests: /probe/standalone-expiry (fails on f48ebd8, passes now) plus 2 unit tests. 111 unit and 46 integration tests pass. The Windows harness races on #166 are being fixed there.

Re-approving at e6d448d (rebased onto 86e549c). It closes the last note from my previous approval. Local: build, fmt and clippy -D warnings clean; ctest 6/6; browser tests 46/46. All 16 of my probes hold, including the standalone type=month "Valid thru" outside a card form, which is now refused. Long pay/place-order buttons and links, card-form submits, short Place your order/Buy/Book now, and the focus/keydown/timer steals into card fields (same- and cross-origin) are all held. No CI on this base. Approve only, no merge.
