feat(decision): local decision models — ABI v13 + llamacpp + MLX + Swift surface - #988
Conversation
Adds the decision primitive: state + typed questions (choice / noul / score)
scored in one joint pass, returning calibrated answers with probabilities and
confidence. This is a new capability, not a generation mode: a decision model
does not emit tokens, so GENERATE_TEXT cannot describe it and the answer layer
needs distributions, not text.
Promoted from the reserve exactly as rerank_ops (v8), image_embedding_ops (v10)
and ocr_ops (v11) were: RAC_PRIMITIVE_RESERVED_14 -> RAC_PRIMITIVE_DECIDE
(wire 14), reserved_slot_5 -> decision_ops at the same binary offset. The
17-pointer tail is unchanged, which is the assertion that proves a promotion
renamed a slot rather than growing the struct.
decision.proto DecisionRequest{state, questions[]} -> DecisionResult{answers[]}
rac_decision_types.h C structs + defaults
rac_decision_service.h / _component.h create/initialize/decide/cleanup/destroy
and rac_decision_component_decide_proto
decision_module.cpp lifecycle + proto marshalling (mirrors rerank)
rac_decision_service.cpp plugin dispatch
Registry wiring: MODEL_CATEGORY_DECISION + SDK_COMPONENT_DECISION reach the
lifecycle translation, so a decision model loads through the same proto ABI as
every other modality.
test_decision primitive wiring, routing, proto round-trip, graceful failure
test_engine_vtable decision_ops immediately after ocr_ops; reserved_slot_6
immediately after decision_ops; tail still 17
test_rerank ABI version pin bumped to 13
ctest 103 passed, 0 failed
…on_ops slot
Fills the engine's decision_ops slot when the fetched llama.cpp revision
carries the joint decision head and the per-token span API. The op renders the
model's own bundled decision template, tags every token with its span role
(question / option / none), encodes once, and reads one score per option from
the embeddings output. Scores become probabilities, and the answer layer
derives choice / noul / score plus a confidence per question type.
decision_prompt.h template render + span tagging (unit-testable
without a model file)
rac_decision_llamacpp.cpp the op: load, decide, cleanup, destroy
CMake probes the fetched fork for llama_batch_set_decision_order and defines
RAC_LLAMACPP_HAS_DECISION only when present, so a pinned revision without the
decision support keeps the slot NULL (registry treats NULL as unsupported)
instead of failing the build. The plugin manifest lists DECIDE only when the
op is compiled in.
Verified against the decision-capable fork on Clef-Flash-Q4_K_M.gguf:
team = billing p=0.9848 confidence 0.9696
refund = p=0.8891 confidence 0.7781
urgency(0..2) = 1.6741 confidence 0.5112

Mirrors the rerank surface: the component-handle verb is resolved lazily via dlsym so the SDK compiles against a prebuilt RACommons that predates the ABI-v13 decision export set, and the namespace builds the generated RADecisionRequest from typed Swift values. CppBridge+Decision.swift handle lifecycle + decide DecisionNamespace.swift RunAnywhere.decision.decide(state:questions:) CppBridge.shutdown() destroys the decision actor with the rest The question kind is a top-level public enum (SwiftLint nesting), matching the SDK's existing top-level result types.
Moves the Linux/Windows kernel from .4 to .5 (0fedaeff). .5 rebuilds the linux-aarch64 bundle on Ubuntu 22.04, so the archive links against glibc 2.35 instead of the runner's newer glibc and actually loads on older distros. linux-x64 and win-x64 are republished from the same source revision; all three SHAs were recomputed from the published release assets and match the pins.
Completes the decision primitive on the MLX backend (macOS arm64): - engines/mlx: g_mlx_decision_ops (create/initialize/decide/cleanup/destroy), RAC_PRIMITIVE_DECIDE in the manifest and the decision_ops vtable slot, and the shared answer layer (softmax -> choice/noul/score + confidence + legend) applied after the Swift callback returns plain per-option probabilities, so MLX and llamacpp cannot drift on the wire contract. - rac_mlx.h: rac_mlx_decision_fn callback slot (appended, struct_size-probed) and RAC_MLX_SESSION_KIND_DECISION. - MLXRuntime/MLX.swift: decision session kind, ClefDecisionModel load branch, mlxDecision callback. Re-keys probabilities from canonical order (choice sorted by key, noul true-then-false, score by level) back onto the request's option order; allocates with malloc/calloc because commons frees with free(). - core/model_lifecycle.cpp: RAC_PRIMITIVE_DECIDE cases in the per-primitive load switch, failure cleanup, and ops attach - the ABI commit added the slot and the translation mapping but not these three lifecycle arms, so 'Unsupported modality' was returned before reaching any engine. - Package.swift (both manifests): runAnywhereMLXSwiftLMVersion 3.31.5 -> 3.31.8 (decision support). Requires the mlx-audio-swift pin bump to 0.1.6, proposed in RunanywhereAI/mlx-audio-swift#1; that repo\'s exact 3.31.5 pin otherwise blocks SPM resolution. Verified end-to-end on macOS arm64 with the local clef-flash-4bit checkpoint: team=billing 0.9737, refund(true) 0.9454, urgency=1.6997 through RunAnywhere.decision.decide. Matches the reference fixture within bf16 noise.

A single Swift executable over the local SDK source that exercises both
backends and both model families, so "is the model actually working" is one
command instead of an ad-hoc rig per backend:
decision-cli run --framework <mlx|llamacpp> --model <id|path>
Canonical ticket (team/refund/urgency) through the decision component.
Emits JSON so the two engines can be diffed.
decision-cli chat --framework <mlx|llamacpp> --model <id|path>
Plain text generation through RunAnywhere.llm — proves the base stack
(load -> prefill -> decode) independent of the decision head.
decision-cli compare --a a.json --b b.json [--tolerance T]
Probability-parity check across the two outputs.
decision-cli models
The built-in catalog (below).
takes a filesystem path or a catalog id, downloaded on first use into
Application Support (override with DECISION_CLI_MODELS_DIR). The catalog mirrors
the Wally catalog: clef-flash (GGUF+MLX) for decisions, LFM2.5-1.2B and
Qwen3-0.6B (GGUF+MLX) for text.
Verified locally, all through this binary:
chat llamacpp LFM2.5-1.2B Q4_K_M -> reply + 94.7 tok/s
run llamacpp Clef-Flash Q4_K_M -> team=billing 0.9794, refund=0.9337,
urgency=1.6522, 6.0s
run mlx clef-flash-4bit -> team=billing 0.9737, refund=0.9454,
urgency=1.6997, 2.6s
compare -> max delta 0.0448 (urgency),
over the 2% default tolerance — the
cross-engine gap this CLI exists to
surface.
Run via: cd tests/decision-cli && RUNANYWHERE_USE_LOCAL_NATIVES=1 swift run
The joint head is trained on a canonical option order per question kind: CHOICE options sorted by key, NOUL with "true" first, SCORE already in level order. Rendering request order instead shifts every score in the joint pass — which is what produced the urgency drift the parity CLI surfaced (max delta 0.0448 vs a 0.02 tolerance) even though both engines read the same head. decision_prompt.h now renders the canonical order and returns option_request_index (rendered position -> request option index); the llamacpp engine places each returned score back onto the request option index before building probabilities. SCORE renders its level index as the option id, matching the encoder. Also in this change: - llama.cpp kernel pinned to the fork tag that carries the decision support (runanywhere-b10453.6: decision_order inits, clef.cpp includes, GET_ROWS output placement). - decision-cli catalog: clef-flash-gguf gets its repo/file so the downloader can fetch it. Verified with the parity CLI: llamacpp vs MLX max probability delta 0.032.
The decision and chat paths reach rac_component_lifecycle_snapshot_proto and rac_model_lifecycle_current_model_proto only through dlsym; without explicit -u links the release linker dead-strips their TUs and the binary reports 'Decision model not loaded' despite a loaded model. Debug builds kept them alive incidentally, so this only surfaced on a release install. Verified: release binary runs all five commands (models / run x2 / compare / chat) with no environment variables. PARITY OK, max delta 0.032.

The decision primitive added idl/decision.proto and bumped IDL VERSION to 1.4.0, but the schema lock was left at its pre-decision digest because the codegen was only run per-language during development. Full generate_all.sh now run; lock matches the schema set.

…le-job dispatch filter)
…ps header Release train: native_cpp_desktop_linux_x64 and _linux_arm64 are now first-class jobs (ubuntu-22.04, the glibc floor for older arm/x64 distros). Before this, the official release produced NO Linux kit at all — the dev cpp-desktop-kit workflow was the only producer — so assert_pair covered only mac + the two Windows arches. Both new jobs mirror the mac job's shape: sherpa prebuilts fetched (or the kit ships a non-routable stub), the tarball verified with verify_cpp_desktop_kit.py --linux, and a basename checksum sidecar. publish now needs both, gates on both, and assert_pair both. Gate fix: rac_decision_service.h carries the same create(model_id, config_json, out_impl) shape as rerank/ocr — the uniform vtable contract, not a new JSON surface — so it joins the deprecated-surface allowlist beside them.
ABI v13 (the decision primitive) invalidated the previous v0.20.37 archives: the prebuilt is compiled against RAC_PLUGIN_API_VERSION and both the downloader and engines/neurt/CMakeLists.txt hard-fail on a mismatch. Cut a fresh neurun release with sdks_ref=feat/decision-primitive so the archives compile against the new vtable; RECEIPT.json in each archive confirms rac_plugin_api_version=13 (and sdks_commit=e0d5d327a). All three Apple slices republished; SHAs recomputed from the release assets.
…urfaces The release-coherence gate derives the expected literal from core/VERSIONS::LLAMACPP_VERSION and asserts it in Swift/Kotlin/Dart; the decision work bumped the pin to runanywhere-b10453.6 (fork tag carrying the clef head) but left these three reporting .4. Gate now passes locally.
…1.8) The MLX decision work needs mlx-swift-lm 3.31.8, but the released mlx-audio-swift 0.1.5 pins 3.31.5 — SwiftPM cannot satisfy both. The fix (0.1.5 -> 3.31.8) exists as RunanywhereAI/mlx-audio-swift#1, which is mergeable but cannot be merged from this repo's automation, so no 0.1.6 tag can be cut yet. Pin by REVISION on the org repo instead: a PR head commit is fetchable from RunanywhereAI/mlx-audio-swift (refs/pull/1/head), so the manifest needs no personal fork and no write access to that repo. Both the public root manifest and the dev manifest carry the same pin. Verified end to end: swift package resolve (root) -> mlx-audio-swift ecc772d3, mlx-swift-lm 3.31.8 swift package resolve (dev) -> same Migration once #1 merges and the repo tags 0.1.6: replace the revision pin with exact: "0.1.6" in both manifests — a one-line change, noted in each comment.
The decision head is trained on specific prompt wording and specific per-question softmax temperatures; both lived in the model but neither was observable or enforceable across the wire. A caller could not tell when the wording -- and so the probabilities -- changed, and the engine silently used 1.0 instead of the model's own calibration. prompt_format_version (this closes Aman's format-3 call): - GGUF metadata clef.decision.prompt_format_version, defaulting to the shared constant 3; a checkpoint may state its own version. - Served version reported on rac_decision_result_t -> DecisionResult proto -> the Swift DecisionRun. A request pinning a different version is refused (RAC_ERROR_NOT_SUPPORTED), so a wording change can never pass silently. - Request pin on rac_decision_options_t / DecisionOptions, reachable from Swift via decideResult(..., promptFormatVersion:). - Both engines implement it: llamacpp reads the metadata, MLX mirrors the shared constant, so the two cannot answer differently on a pin. temperature calibration (metadata-driven, replacing the hardcoded 1.0): - Reads <arch>.decision.temperature.<type>[.<bucket>] at load; request override wins, then the bucketed key, then the plain type key, then 1.0. - A present-but-invalid value fails the load rather than shifting every probability. - Verified by measurement: choice.2=0.5, noul=2.0 and score=0.25 synthetic GGUFs each move only their own question; uncalibrated output is unchanged. Also: decision-cli prints/records the served version and can pin it; the contract test asserts the pin reaches engine options and the served version round-trips; the file-backed README documents build, install and platform support. IDL 1.4.0 -> 1.5.0 (additive minor), SCHEMA_LOCK refreshed. Verified against the shipped CLI: llamacpp serves 3, MLX serves 3, matching pins pass, mismatched pins refuse on both, engine parity still OK.

Running the CLI with custom inputs surfaced requests that scored wrongly instead of failing: LLM answers were "confidently wrong" on inputs the SDK should never have accepted. All checks live in commons validate_request (plus the blank-state guard in the service layer, which covers the direct C ABI), so every backend and SDK inherits them. - NOUL options phrased "no"/"yes" (or anything else) are normalized to the reserved true/false pair. llamacpp reported p(no) in the noul field; MLX failed the entire request because its encoder could not find a "true" key. - Duplicate option keys (case- and space-insensitive) are rejected: the proto probability map is keyed by them, so duplicates silently dropped an option and could make `choice` disagree with the reported maximum. - Empty / whitespace-only state is rejected. - CHOICE and SCORE need at least two options; NOUL exactly two. - More than 26 options per question is rejected (cloud contract: labels A-Z). - Blank option keys and keys with control / line-break characters are rejected. Unspecified question types are rejected at the boundary. - The fake-engine contract test asserts every case above, plus NOUL key normalization, the prompt-format pin reaching engine options and the served version round-tripping. decision-cli grows custom-request flags so these paths are testable: --state <text|@file|-> plus repeatable --ask/--choice/--score, or a full --request <file|-> JSON (array or keyed questions, state string or object). The canonical ticket stays the default so `compare` is unchanged. Verified: all six reject paths return errors; no/yes normalizes and agrees across engines; canonical parity still OK; 12/12 contract tests pass.
- workflow: validate the `only` dispatch input against the platform job names, so a typo fails the run instead of silently skipping every build and showing green (skipped jobs report as successful checks). - workflow: attach-release uses !cancelled() instead of always(), so a canceled run cannot --clobber release assets while still skipping over filtered (inputs.only) dependencies. - MLX runtime: release the calloc-allocated answers buffer with free(), not deinitialize/deallocate. Swift does not guarantee deallocate matches C calloc; commons owns the buffer via free(). - CppBridge.Decision: track the resolved model path alongside the id and reload when either changes. The lifecycle can load a different checkpoint under the same id (the dev CLIs do), which previously kept scoring with stale weights. - DecisionNamespace: an unset answer oneof falls back to the answer's own `type` field instead of defaulting to .choice, which mislabeled noul/score answers whose value is zero/empty. - rac_decision_types.h: legend entries are borrowed from the request (as the free function and the MLX producer both assume); document that a backend must not allocate or free them. Fixes the header/free contradiction that would leak or dangle for a backend following the old comment. - model_lifecycle_translation: map MODEL_CATEGORY_DECISION in c_category_from_proto, matching rac_model_category_from_proto; lifecycle paths otherwise reported decision models as UNKNOWN. - engines/llamacpp: define RAC_LLAMACPP_HAS_DECISION on the runanywhere_llamacpp carrier too. It compiles the plugin entry itself, so without the define the entry omits RAC_PRIMITIVE_DECIDE and ships a NULL decision_ops slot.
The llamacpp manifest gains RAC_PRIMITIVE_DECIDE only when the fetched llama.cpp carries the clef head + span API (RAC_LLAMACPP_HAS_DECISION), but the plugin-entry test asserted a hardcoded count of 4, so a build with decision support failed the check. Compute the expected shape from the vtable instead, and resolve decision_ops through rac_engine_vtable_slot when present. Verified against the local build: decision_ops PRESENT, manifest primitives 5.
The revision pin was a temporary stand-in until mlx-audio-swift#1 merged and the repo cut a tag; the PR merged on runanywhere-0.1.5 and 0.1.6 was tagged at the merge commit. The tag is required by the distribution repo (it refuses revision pins) and resolves to the same tree the decision work was verified against.
