fix(segmentation): produce confidence masks - #975
Produce opt-in segmentation confidence masks across the SDK bindings: one byte per source pixel, row-major, quantized to 0–255. Preserve existing defaults, Python positional arguments and absent-output behavior.
Native compatibility
Keep plugin API 14 and the original segmentation options, result, service and operation-table layouts. Confidence uses a separate versioned output and optional operation advertised by a capability flag. Existing engine slots and reserved fields are unchanged.
Confidence requests use the same selected engine and model instance, validate extension headers and payload sizes, and return an explicit unsupported error when the engine lacks the extension. Invalid outputs are freed and reset. Provider leases protect callbacks from unload or replacement; plugin registration and library-handle transfer are atomic. Registry initialization order keeps lifecycle-held leases safe during shutdown, and ONNX rejects nonfinite interpolated confidence logits before quantization.
Core, ONNX and SDK native bridges need updated builds to expose confidence. Existing unrelated ABI-14 private-engine archives do not need a new ABI release for this extension. NeuRT pins, hashes and receipt guards remain unchanged.
Validation
Current head 3ec3f22: 31 checks passed, eight skipped, none failed. CI includes native debug/ASan tests, platform builds and SDK checks.
Local Python namespace suite: 57 passed. Electron build, all four type-check projects and 241 tests passed; Web build/type checks, Node ESM resolution and 288 tests passed.
Targeted native suites, malformed-interface/payload and cleanup checks, concurrent plugin load/unload probes, and ONNX confidence-value probes passed.
All four original/new ABI-14 host/plugin pairings passed, including protected memory after legacy-sized options and results.
Public C headers compile as C11; public exports and offline prebuilt-pin checks pass.
The standalone binary harness uses logging and model-resolution seams. Private-engine integration and skipped CI lanes remain unverified. A refreshed review of the latest commit and maintainer approval are still pending.
Both follow-ups remain open and are non-blocking for this PR.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Segmentation can optionally return a confidence mask with each pixel’s winning-class probability, encoded as a value from 0 to 255.
Confidence-mask output is available in the Electron, Flutter, Kotlin, Python, React Native, Swift, and web SDKs. It is off by default, so results remain unchanged unless requested.
The ONNX segmentation engine supports confidence-mask output, with one confidence value for each source-image pixel.

Walkthrough
The change adds opt-in, per-pixel segmentation confidence masks. The native API and ONNX provider produce the masks, the protobuf path returns them, and SDK bindings expose the request option and result field. Provider leases also affect plugin unload, replacement, and unregister operations.

Summary
Confidence ABI and ONNX support core/include/rac/features/segmentation/rac_segmentation_confidence.h, engines/onnx/*, core/exports/RACommons.exports, core/tests/test_engine_vtable.cpp, docs/reference/segmentation-confidence-abi.md
The ABI adds an optional version-1 confidence interface without changing the legacy segmentation result layout. The ONNX provider computes a rounded winning-class probability byte per source pixel and advertises the interface.
Segmentation services and loaded models retain provider contexts. The plugin registry tracks active leases and returns RAC_ERROR_PLUGIN_BUSY for affected detach, replacement, and unregister operations.
Core confidence dispatch and protobuf output core/src/features/segmentation/segmentation_module.cpp
Confidence requests use the confidence-enabled service operation. The protobuf path validates the mask and includes its bytes in the result.
Electron and Python native bindings bindings/electron/native/addon.cpp, bindings/python/native/module.cpp
The native bindings accept confidence options and call the confidence-enabled C API when requested. They add nonempty confidence bytes to the returned result.
SDKs expose the confidence option and returned mask. Python tests cover legacy native signatures and error propagation. Web checks that the mask length matches image dimensions.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 3ec3f
No actionable risk introduced by this change remains; it is ready to merge after normal checks.
Security architecture risk: High · up to 92e2b
Matching versions appear to handle the optional mask safely, but a previously built segmentation engine could be accepted with an incompatible native result layout. That could crash or corrupt the host on an ordinary segmentation request, even when confidence is not requested. Whether releases always replace the engine and core together is unverified.
Retained concerns
High · security · inferred: The confidence fields are inserted before existing result fields, while the plugin ABI version remains 12. A previously built version-12 segmentation provider can therefore pass registration but write the old layout for a result that the new core interprets and frees using the new layout. Mixed deployment could cause invalid frees or other native memory corruption on ordinary requests.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — In a mixed-version installation, a caller able to invoke segmentation could trigger misinterpretation of provider-owned pointers in the SDK host process. The affected scope is that process and its loaded segmentation provider; broader tenant, network, or credential exposure is not established.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — If an old version-12 provider remains loaded with the new core, an otherwise valid segmentation request can produce an old-layout result. New-core validation and cleanup then read shifted fields, with potential invalid frees or process failure. No incompatible production pairing or successful exploit is evidenced.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The Electron renderer-to-native route uses its existing allowlisted dispatch and live-handle check. The plugin registration control rejects differing ABI version numbers, but not two layouts bearing the same number.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Matching-version execution bounds the source dimensions, checks the requested mask length before copying it to the wire result, and frees native result allocations on the inspected success and error paths. Those controls do not correct a mismatched C struct layout.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Gate this changed provider-facing layout with a distinct ABI version or a versioned, size-checked result contract, and verify that rollout and rollback cannot pair incompatible core and engine binaries.

Thanks for this, @shubhamsinnh! Producing a confidence mask alongside the class mask is a genuine capability gap, and the ONNX-side work behind it looks right.
One thing blocks it, because it breaks the plugin ABI silently rather than loudly:
core/include/rac/features/segmentation/rac_segmentation_types.h:55 — confidence_mask and confidence_mask_size are inserted in the middle of rac_segmentation_result_t, ahead of class_summaries. That shifts class_summaries, class_summary_count, processing_time_ms and model_id by 16 bytes. An existing ONNX plugin built against the current layout still passes registration and then writes class_summaries into the slot the new core reads as confidence_mask — type confusion on a pointer, not a clean failure. The reverse (new plugin, old caller) overwrites a smaller result buffer.
The repo's own rule is in rac_primitive.h: primitives go at the end and RAC_PLUGIN_API_VERSION is bumped. This branch carries 12u while main is already 13u (from feat(decision): local decision models — ABI v13 + llamacpp + MLX + Swift surface #988), so a stale plugin currently passes the registration check. Either append the two fields at the end of the struct — which is API-compatible and needs no version bump — or bump RAC_PLUGIN_API_VERSION and accept that nothing built against 12u can load.
bindings/python/runanywhere/options.py:247 — include_confidence is inserted before the existing positional model argument, so SegmentationOptions(False, "/models/segformer") — valid before this PR — now sets include_confidence to that string and leaves model=None. Appending it (or making it keyword-only) keeps existing callers working.
Once the fields are at the end and the Python option is appended, we'll take another look. Thanks!
Thanks for this, @shubhamsinnh! Producing the confidence mask closes a real gap — include_confidence and confidence_mask_u8 have been sitting in idl/segmentation.proto with no producer — and the ONNX softmax side reads correctly to me (the online-rescale denominator is right, and the extra work is skipped unless the flag is set).
Two things to sort out before this can merge; both were also raised in review:
core/include/rac/features/segmentation/rac_segmentation_types.h:55 — confidence_mask and confidence_mask_size are inserted in the middle of rac_segmentation_result_t, ahead of class_summaries. That shifts class_summaries, class_summary_count, processing_time_ms and model_id by 16 bytes, and RAC_PLUGIN_API_VERSION stays 12u, so a plugin built against the current layout still passes the registration check and then has its class_summaries pointer read as confidence_mask — which rac_segmentation_result_free frees (core/src/features/segmentation/rac_segmentation_service.cpp:120). That is type confusion on a pointer, not a clean failure. The rule in core/include/rac/plugin/rac_plugin_entry.h:45 asks for a bump on exactly this kind of layout change; simplest here is to append the two fields after model_id, which preserves every existing offset and needs no bump. Same edit in the Swift copy at bindings/swift/Sources/RunAnywhere/CRACommons/include/rac_segmentation_types.h:55, and please line the description's "extended by trailing fields" claim up with whichever you choose.
bindings/python/runanywhere/options.py:247 — include_confidence was inserted before the existing positional model, so SegmentationOptions(False, "/models/segformer"), valid before this PR, now binds the path to include_confidence and leaves model=None. Appending it after model (or making it keyword-only) keeps existing callers working.
While you're in there (small, not required): bindings/electron/src/api/backend.ts:488 — the exported RaBackend.segment options type still reads { includeDiagnosticImage?: boolean } while both implementations take includeConfidence too, so the new option is an excess-property error for a consumer typed against the interface.
CodeRabbit's threads on the two points still apply — the result-struct one and the Python option one. A fix or a short reply on why it doesn't apply are both fine.
Not blocking this PR: I opened #{issue:1} for value-level test coverage of the mask and #{issue:2} for enforcing the same mask-size contract on the direct (non-proto) segment path — you're welcome to pick either up.
Once 1 and 2 are in we'll take another look. Thanks again!
Moved both confidence fields after model_id in the core and Swift headers.
Moved Python's include_confidence after model, with regression coverage for the existing positional call and opt-in confidence forwarding.
Added the missing confidence option to the exported Electron backend interface.
I also corrected the compatibility claim. Appending fields preserves offsets but still grows both C structs, so this uses plugin ABI 14 and rejects older plugins before callbacks. ABI 13 already identifies a different contract on main. Native consumers must rebuild with matching headers.
Validation: 50 Python namespace tests, the Electron build/type checks and 241 unit tests, focused native registry/layout checks, both C headers, the service syntax check, and changed-file formatting/whitespace checks passed. Repository-wide C++ lint still reports 67 pre-existing failures outside this patch.
The private-engine ABI-12 artifact pins remain a release blocker until matching ABI-14 artifacts are rebuilt and pinned; the receipt guards are unchanged. Full native/platform builds remain unverified locally. I kept the broader confidence-value and direct-path validation follow-ups separate.
Please take another look at the requested fixes and the native rebuild requirement.
Thanks for this, @shubhamsinnh! The latest fixes all check out at 43e17be — confidence_mask and confidence_mask_size now sit after model_id in both headers with every legacy offset pinned at core/tests/test_engine_vtable.cpp:128-148, include_confidence is appended after model at bindings/python/runanywhere/options.py:246-248, and the Electron interface carries includeConfidence at bindings/electron/src/api/backend.ts:488. You were also right to correct the compatibility claim: both structs do grow, so 14u plus the registration-time rejection is the safe shape, and the build is fine on every lane that has run.
The one thing left is on our side rather than yours, so this PR is held rather than sent back:
core/include/rac/plugin/rac_plugin_entry.h:118 — the ABI-14 header has no ABI-14 NeuRT artifact yet. core/VERSIONS:339 still pins NEURT_RAC_ABI_VERSION=12, which makes the repo's own gate fail (scripts/validation/gates/check_engine_prebuilt_pins.sh:70-73 prints [FAIL] NEURT_RAC_ABI_VERSION=12 but the header says 14 and exits 1, and engines/neurt/CMakeLists.txt:110-113 fails the Apple receipt check the same way). Cutting the ABI-14 archives in the private neurun repo and re-pinning core/VERSIONS needs maintainer access, which is exactly what your PR body says — so nothing for you to do here unless you would like to help with the re-pin once the archives exist.
The ABI numbering between this branch and main (where 13u is the decision primitive) is the other maintainer call; your changelog entry is right for this branch's history and it is safe either way at runtime, so this is bookkeeping we will settle when the histories converge.
One non-blocking note we are carrying ourselves: the required PR build matrix has never run on this PR because the base is temp/development, which pr-build.yml:17 does not trigger for — CI being partly unrun is a base thing, not your change.
Not blocking this PR: we already opened #{issue:1} (value-level coverage for the mask) and #{issue:2} (the mask-size contract on the direct path) — you're welcome to pick either up, and there is no rush on them.
Thanks again for the care you put into the compatibility analysis; we'll move it as soon as the archives are pinned.

…ndings
Fix provider registry cleanup order, accepted manifest lookup, lifecycle teardown and admission failure handling. Register dynamic plugins and their OS handles atomically, omit empty Electron confidence masks, and reject nonfinite interpolated confidence logits.
Validation: seven targeted native suites, Electron build/typecheck and 241 tests, 8,000 concurrent load/unload cycles, and real ONNX confidence probes passed. ABI-14 pins and public exports remain unchanged.
Fixed the provider lifetime, plugin loading, lifecycle, and confidence-mask issues.
Reverted the proposed ABI bump from 15 to 14. Confidence now uses a separate versioned extension, preserving existing layouts and compatibility with ABI-14 engines.

Hey @Siddhesh2377, I've replied to and resolved the remaining review threads and updated the description with the latest validation and follow-up status. All 31 checks that ran passed; eight were skipped. Could you take another look at 3ec3f22? Thanks!
Thanks for the context on the ABI revert, @shubhamsinnh! Moving confidence into a separate versioned extension and leaving the legacy structs untouched is the right call, and the layout pins in core/tests/test_engine_vtable.cpp back it up. Treating the earlier layout and ABI-number concerns as addressed; the reviews of 3ec3f22 came back clean.
Thanks for working through all the threads, @shubhamsinnh, and for the clear summary. Every thread is resolved, CI is green, and two independent reviews found no blockers at 3ec3f22. Treating this as addressed.

Thanks a lot for this, @shubhamsinnh! includeConfidence was accepted by every SDK but never produced a mask; ONNX segmentation now returns a real 0..255 winning-class probability mask when asked, through all seven SDKs, and the legacy result and option structs keep their layout.
Checked: CodeRabbit reviewed the latest commit · CI green · built and linted locally merged into main (fast gates, C++ commons build and ctest, Electron, Python, Web, React Native, Swift lint, Kotlin lint) · two independent code reviews.
Follow-ups, not blocking: #1199 (record the confidence-mask manifest extension in the plugin ABI docs) and #1200 (clean up the registry when a replace is refused as busy) — you're welcome to pick these up.
Approved from my side — it merges as soon as a second maintainer signs off.

Re-reviewed on 3ec3f22. All 34 threads are resolved, and I checked the late ones against the code: teardown order, erase-before-free, manifest lookup after a duplicate load, the dlopen handle transfer under the lock, and the non-finite logits rejection. It merges cleanly with current main. Core ctest passes 104/104. A probe against the real ONNX fixture matches an independent softmax (161 = 0.632×255). Python segmentation passes 12/12, Electron 241/241, and Web 288/288. Non-blocking: re-registration returns PLUGIN_BUSY while a model is loaded (#1200), there are unrelated include and rewrap edits, and confidence regression tests are still pending (#1022/#1023).
