Description

Default-format <tool_call>{...}</tool_call> output with malformed UTF-8 can parse into a call whose arguments fail validation. Repair the bytes before JSON parsing and unquoted-key normalization, preserving decoded values, nested types, valid Unicode, and escaped backslashes.

Actual executor dispatch also needs repair before the protobuf boundary: the run loop and session serialize generated text into ToolParseRequest.text, and strict protobuf decoding rejects malformed bytes before the normalizer runs. The shared generation helper now repairs that text for both orchestration paths.

For example, a location containing bytes C3 28 now reaches the executor as (, completes validation, and proceeds to final synthesis.

Fixes #1131.

Dependency

Stacked on #1154, which introduces the shared sanitizer and repaired-key collision checks. This branch includes #1154 through 006105ed74c1ebee2f58c8087e1b7d444ce93607. Maintainers should merge #1154 first; this branch can then be rebased onto main. The full PR diff includes that unmerged parent; review the #1131-only changes in the focused comparison.

Type of Change

  • Bug fix

Testing

  • Linux Debug protobuf-enabled targeted rebuild of all affected production translation units and the three test executables, reusing unchanged parent dependency artifacts.
  • Protobuf parser binary (previous follow-up): 36/36 cases passed.
  • Previous follow-up: three CTest suites passed — tool parser, tool-calling run loop, and tool-calling session proto. The original implementation also passed LLM proto service, LLM stream proto, and tool-value JSON.
  • New normalization cases cover malformed bytes, incomplete sequences, unquoted keys, nested arrays/objects, escaped backslashes, and valid Unicode.
  • Default-format parsing and schema validation preserve the exact repaired value.
  • Run-loop regression verifies validation stays enabled, the executor runs exactly once with repaired arguments, and final synthesis completes.
  • Session regression verifies the repaired call reaches the host and the supplied tool result completes the session.
  • Removal checks: deleting normalization repair fails both parser regressions; deleting shared generation repair fails the run-loop and session regressions. These checks use temporary copies.
  • Latest test-only follow-up: 35/35 non-protobuf parser cases passed. Both argument-key parse calls select the loop's format explicitly; removing duplicate-key rejection in temporary copies fails the collision regression for LFM2 and bare Pythonic independently.
  • Direct caller-owned malformed tool names exercise both validation APIs without parser sanitization; existing parsed-name coverage is preserved.
  • Removing validation-error replacement handling in temporary copies fails the new raw-name regression for each API while the parsed-name regression still passes.
  • Changed-line formatting, whitespace, PII-logging guard, and deprecated-surface gate passed.
  • Repository-wide formatting remains unclean: the same 81 files are flagged as in the parent checkout, including the generated defaults header. No newly flagged file.

A normalization-only experiment passed the parser suite while both orchestration regressions still failed. This confirms why both repair points are necessary.

Platform-Specific Testing

Native Linux Debug only. Apple, Android, Windows, and Web integration were not run locally.

Summary by cubic

Fixes default-format tool calls with malformed UTF-8 so their arguments survive parsing, schema validation, and executor dispatch.

Previously, <tool_call>{...}</tool_call> output with invalid UTF-8 bytes could fail validation or produce arguments with lost types and extra quotes. The normalizer now repairs bytes before JSON parsing and unquoted-key normalization, and the shared generation helper repairs text before it crosses the protobuf boundary in both run-loop and session orchestration paths. A shared rac::llm::sanitize_utf8 replaces each invalid byte with U+FFFD while preserving valid Unicode, nested types, and escaped backslashes.

  • Pythonic and LFM2 argument keys that become duplicates after repair now reject the whole call instead of silently dropping an argument.
  • Tool-result error payloads and validation error messages are also sanitized so malformed host- or model-provided text stays valid JSON.

Dependency

Stacked on #1154, which introduces the shared sanitizer and repaired-key collision checks. Merge #1154 first; this branch can then be rebased.

Written for commit 64152bd. Summary will update on new commits.

Walkthrough

The change adds shared UTF-8 sanitization and applies it to generated text, tool-call argument parsing, JSON serialization, and protobuf tool-result payload formatting. Tests cover malformed UTF-8 across these paths.

Changes: UTF-8 handling in LLM tool calls

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared UTF-8 sanitization
core/src/features/llm/utf8_internal.h, core/src/features/llm/llm_module.cpp, core/src/features/llm/tool_calling_generation_internal.h, core/tests/test_tool_calling_run_loop.cpp, core/tests/test_tool_calling_session_proto.cpp
A shared sanitizer replaces invalid UTF-8 bytes with U+FFFD. The LLM module uses the shared implementation, and generated text is sanitized before storage. Regression tests check repaired arguments in the run loop and session events.
Tool argument and result handling
core/src/features/llm/tool_calling.cpp, core/src/features/llm/tool_calling_result_internal.h, core/tests/test_tool_calling.cpp
Tool argument input and keys are sanitized before parsing. Duplicate keys that collide after repair cause parsing to fail. JSON serialization uses replacement handling, and protobuf prompt formatting uses tool_result_payload_json. Tests cover malformed UTF-8, valid Unicode, key collisions, tool-name validation, and result payloads.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description covers the bug, implementation scope, dependency, testing, platform limitations, labels, and checklist status. It also clearly documents the known repository-wide formatting issue as pre-existing.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#1131] Requirement 1: a default-format <tool_call> whose arguments contain malformed UTF-8 (C3 28) must parse, validate, and execute with U+FFFD in the argument. The PR adds repair in two places. (a) rac_tool_call_normalize_json repairs bytes before JSON parsing and unquoted-key normalization. (b) The shared generation helper (tool_calling_generation_internal.h) sanitizes model output before it is written to ToolParseRequest.text for the run loop and session paths. The shared rac::llm::sanitize_utf8 (utf8_internal.h) replaces each invalid byte with U+FFFD. For C3 28, the lead byte C3 fails the continuation check, so it becomes U+FFFD, and '(' is kept, giving '('. The run-loop test test_default_invalid_utf8_reaches_executor, with validation enabled, checks that the executor runs once with the repaired argument and that final synthesis completes. The session test checks that the repaired call reaches the host and that the tool result completes the session. Requirement 2: a regression test must fail when sanitization is removed. The new tests exist in test_tool_calling.cpp, test_tool_calling_run_loop.cpp, and test_tool_calling_session_proto.cpp. The removal checks (deleting normalizer repair fails both parser regressions; deleting generation-helper repair fails the run-loop and session regressions) are reported in the PR description as results from temporary copies. I did not re-run them. The diff inspection for the changed blobs was unavailable, so the test-body details come from the supplied change summary.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes trace to the malformed-UTF-8 repair theme of #1131. (1) The shared sanitizer (utf8_internal.h) and its relocation from llm_module.cpp are named in #1131 as the intended shared repair rule. (2) Repair in the normalizer and generation helper is the core fix. (3) Pythonic and LFM2 argument-key collision rejection follows from repairing keys with the shared sanitizer: repaired keys can collide, and the PR rejects the call rather than silently dropping an argument. This changes the #948 paths, but the change is a direct consequence of the repair. (4) tool_result_payload_json and validation-error sanitization apply the same replacement rule to host- or model-supplied text on the JSON serialization path. They are adjacent hardening, not a separate feature. The PR description lists them explicitly and ties them to keeping malformed text valid JSON. (5) The #1154 parent changes are present in the full diff. #1131 names the sanitize_utf8 rule as its repair basis, so this infrastructure supports the issue. No change was found that is unrelated to malformed UTF-8 handling in tool-call parsing, validation, dispatch, or completion. The incremental diff and changed-blob contents were not readable, so this assessment relies on the supplied change summary and PR description.

Test does not cover the error_handler_t::replace path in validation_errors_to_json.

rac_tool_call_parse already repairs the tool name through rac_tool_call_normalize_json. So call.tool_name is valid UTF-8 when the test calls the validators. The test passes even if the replace handler at tool_calling.cpp Line 914 is removed. The comment on Lines 633-634 claims the opposite.

rac_tool_call_validate and rac_tool_call_validate_json are public C APIs. A host can pass a rac_tool_call_t with raw bytes to them. Build the call by hand so the test reaches the dump path.

+    rac_tool_call_t call{};
+    call.has_tool_call = RAC_TRUE;
+    call.tool_name = raw_name;

Also remove rac_tool_call_free(&call); at Line 657. call.tool_name now points to a stack buffer.

Sanitize Pythonic argument keys before insertion and reject duplicate repaired names so JSON serialization cannot drop arguments. Extend the existing key regression to cover malformed and valid replacement-key collisions in both parser formats.

Only compile and register the UTF-8 tool-result error test when protobuf is enabled.

Validation: 33/33 protobuf parser cases, 32/32 non-protobuf parser cases, and 5/5 affected CTest suites. The collision regression fails against the original parser. Changed-line formatting, whitespace, PII logging, and deprecated-surface checks passed.
Exercise both validation APIs with a caller-owned malformed tool name without parser normalization. Preserve the parsed-name regression and share the error assertions.

Validation: 36/36 parser cases and parser/run-loop/session suites passed. Removing the replacement handler fails the new regression for both APIs.

Force both cases through the selected parser.

rac_tool_call_parse auto-detects the format. For the first four bare collision inputs, the first argument is x followed by a malformed or repaired byte, not x=. Detection therefore selects RAC_TOOL_FORMAT_DEFAULT, which finds no <tool_call> tag and returns the original text. Those assertions pass without exercising repaired-key collision rejection. Only the raw value=1,value=2 case reaches the Pythonic parser in the bare loop.

Use rac_tool_call_parse_with_format for both assertions:

Use the loop's selected format for valid and rejected argument-key inputs so bare Pythonic cases exercise collision rejection instead of falling back to the default parser.

Validation: 35/35 non-protobuf parser cases passed. Removing duplicate-key rejection in temporary copies fails the collision regression for LFM2 and Pythonic independently. Changed-line formatting and whitespace passed.
