fix(commons): preserve tool argument types with malformed utf-8 - #1154
Malformed UTF-8 in Pythonic arguments can survive serialization while changing the value: double-quoted strings retain literal surrounding quotes, and nested objects or arrays become strings. Repair the bytes before parsing so the decoded value and its JSON type are preserved.
Share the existing LLM UTF-8 sanitizer with the tool parser; reject overlong encodings, surrogate code points, and values above U+10FFFF while preserving valid Unicode.
Use replacement handling when serializing raw argument keys, validation errors, and tool-result error payloads.
Move the existing tool-result payload conversion into its internal result helper so malformed in-memory errors can be tested directly.
For example, value={"q":"<0xFF>"} now yields an object containing U+FFFD rather than a JSON-encoded string. A double-quoted value="<0xC3><0x28>" yields the string ( without extra quotes.
Related: #948 is unmerged at this base; this change includes the same final argument-serialization safeguard and works independently. Default-format argument repair remains tracked in #1131.
Type of Change
Bug fix
Refactoring: share existing internal UTF-8 and result-payload helpers
Testing
Regression coverage for tagged LFM2 and bare Pythonic parsing, decoded strings, object/array types, schema validation, malformed argument keys, Unicode bounds, valid Unicode, validation errors, and tool-result error payloads.
Linux Debug protobuf-enabled build of the affected commons library and five test executables.
Tool parser binary: 33/33 cases passed.
CTest: 5/5 passed — tool parser, tool-calling run loop, tool-calling session proto, LLM proto service, and LLM stream proto.
Five mutation checks: removing pre-parse repair, argument replacement handling, validation-error replacement handling, tool-error replacement handling, or Unicode scalar bounds makes the corresponding regressions fail.
Repository-wide formatting is not clean: clang-format 18.1.8 flags the same 80 existing source files as the clean base, plus an untracked generated defaults header. No newly flagged tracked file.
Baseline reproduction: unchanged production sources return RAC_ERROR_INTERNAL for malformed Pythonic arguments and throw type_error.316 while serializing validation errors containing an invalid tool-name byte.
The malformed tool-result test constructs the in-memory result directly because strict protobuf decoding rejects malformed string fields before prompt formatting.
Platform-Specific Testing
Native Linux Debug only. Apple, Android, Windows, and Web integration checks were not run locally.

Summary by cubic
Malformed UTF-8 in tool arguments previously changed values during serialization: double-quoted strings kept literal quotes and nested objects or arrays became strings. Repairing the bytes before parsing preserves the decoded value and JSON type.
Shares the LLM UTF-8 sanitizer with the tool parser, rejecting overlong encodings, surrogates, and values above U+10FFFF while preserving valid Unicode.
Applies replacement handling when serializing raw argument keys, validation errors, tool-result error payloads, and executor errors.
Rejects the entire call when repaired keys collide at any object depth, including inside arrays, instead of silently dropping an argument or returning a partial object; invalid JSON syntax still falls back to the raw-string value.
Extends Pythonic argument-key detection to non-ASCII bytes so malformed keys reach repair without loosening ASCII identifier and delimiter checks.
Moves tool-result payload conversion into an internal result helper so malformed in-memory errors can be tested directly.

Tool-calling code now uses shared UTF-8 sanitization and replacement handling for malformed input and error text. A shared helper formats tool-result payloads. Regression tests cover argument parsing, validation errors, and result serialization.
A shared sanitizer replaces invalid UTF-8 bytes with U+FFFD. The LLM module uses this utility instead of its local implementation.
Argument parsing and validation core/src/features/llm/tool_calling.cpp, core/tests/test_tool_calling.cpp
Pythonic detection accepts non-ASCII bytes in argument-key identifiers. LFM2 values and keys are sanitized, and parsing rejects duplicate keys and discarded values. JSON serialization uses replacement handling. Tests cover malformed and valid Unicode, duplicate keys, detection, and validation.
A shared helper selects nonempty result JSON, an error object, or {}. Single- and multi-result paths use the helper. Tests cover error sanitization, valid Unicode, empty results, and result precedence.
RunanywhereAI/runanywhere-sdks#1155: Reuses the UTF-8 and tool-result helpers and extends malformed UTF-8 repair to default-format tool calls and generated text.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Only active directly linked issue #1020 supplies coding requirements. The PR repairs argument bytes with shared rac::llm::sanitize_utf8 before parsing. The parser preserves quoted string values and nested object or array types. It handles overlong encodings, surrogate encodings, and values above U+10FFFF. It repairs argument keys and rejects repaired-key collisions. validation_errors_to_json, argument serialization, and tool_result_payload_json use replacement handling. Validation error messages are also sanitized. The added tests cover tagged LFM2 and bare-Pythonic parsing, malformed keys, nested values, validation errors, Unicode bounds, valid Unicode, and tool-result errors. The reported parser and CTest results support the implementation.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changed files remain connected to #1020. The UTF-8 helper refactor shares the existing sanitizer with the tool parser. The parser-detection change allows malformed non-ASCII key bytes to reach the required repair path. Duplicate-key rejection prevents repaired or decoded keys from silently losing an argument, including at nested object depths. The tool-result helper refactor supports direct testing of the required error-payload behavior. The added tests verify these changes. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Reject collisions inside nested objects.
The new duplicate check covers only top-level argument names. For [inspect(value={"x\xFF":1,"x\xFE":2})], repair makes the nested keys identical, and parsing discards one value. The call can then execute with an incomplete object. Detect duplicate keys at every object depth before materializing the repaired JSON. (json.nlohmann.me)

Track decoded keys independently in each JSON object while parsing repaired Pythonic argument values. Reject the entire call on a collision, including inside arrays, instead of executing with a partial object or falling back to a string.
Extend the existing nested-value regression with repaired-key and Unicode-escape collisions plus valid independent object scopes.
Validation: 33/33 protobuf parser cases, 32/32 non-protobuf cases, and 5/5 affected CTest suites. The added regression fails against the original parser. Changed-line formatting, whitespace, PII logging, and deprecated-surface checks pass; no newly flagged tracked file in the full formatting check.
Allow malformed UTF-8 in the first Pythonic argument key during detection.
When the first argument key contains malformed UTF-8, such as [inspect(bad_\xFF=2)], rac_tool_call_detect_format rejects the bare-Pythonic shape because it accepts only ASCII identifier bytes. rac_tool_call_parse then selects RAC_TOOL_FORMAT_DEFAULT, which finds no <tool_call> tag and returns no tool call. The repaired parser is never reached.
The current regression test places value=1 first, so detection succeeds before it reaches the malformed key.

Update the bare-Pythonic argument detection in rac_tool_call_detect_format to
recognize a nonempty key up to the assignment delimiter without requiring ASCII

accepting empty keys or unrelated delimiters.
Pass the format explicitly for Pythonic collision coverage.
The four malformed-key Pythonic cases fail auto-detection and take the default no-call path. They do not exercise Pythonic collision rejection. Use the explicit-format parser:

This is a coverage refactor for an otherwise working explicit-format path, not a currently failing collision assertion or a production defect at this test site.

Repair error_message with replacement handling.
A malformed tool name can reach finalize_tool_validation. The function repairs validation_errors_json, but copies errors.front() directly into the protobuf ToolCallValidationResult.error_message. This violates the protobuf string UTF-8 contract. Apply the existing UTF-8 sanitizer to error_message as well.

Sanitize executor errors before assigning them to ToolResult.error.
An in-process executor can return malformed bytes through rac_proto_buffer_t.error_message. The run loop assigns those bytes directly with tool_result.set_error(executor_error), then stops before the follow-up prompt block. Therefore, tool_result_payload_json cannot repair this path.
The final ToolCallingResult retains the malformed error. The protobuf boundary does not replace it, so a strict consumer can reject the returned payload instead of receiving the replacement character required by the PR objective.
