Windows previously had standalone IOCP spikes without a production backend. This adds the Backend revision 2 implementation and enables real shared Windows contracts. Closes #4.

  • Implement TCP/UDP, named pipes and socket passing, stdio, child processes and Job Objects, console signals/TTY, timers, notifier wakeups and GUI Event integration.
  • Keep kernel buffers pinned through cancellation acknowledgement, preserve FIFO and bounded-turn behavior, and route transferred handles whose original IOCP association cannot change. Reserve synchronous workers at handle adoption so file-buffer backpressure needs no operation-time allocation.
  • Select NT timer completion packets using native measurements. Windows rejects the high-resolution APC route with error 87; its original probe remains a recorded failure with unchanged assertions.
  • Enable 41 default / 48 all-feature Windows contracts, including six allocation gates, executor, console, GUI timer, cancellation-race and handle-lifetime coverage. Remove the Windows pending-contract marker.
  • Require a checksum-pinned HTTP/2 curl through an explicit executable path in Windows CI, and read source-path checks as UTF-8.

Validation:

  • Latest head 23d674b, after incorporating the WASI/web integration from main: 48 Windows contracts, workspace Clippy and workspace MSRV 1.97.1 checks pass locally. The new CI run is in progress.
  • Hosted results at c65a622 — Windows tests: PASS. Workspace default/all features: 216/231 tests; separate Windows contracts: 41/48; HTTP/TLS/WebSocket fixture interop: 17. Logs confirm Node's 100 HTTP/2 streams and the pinned curl's stream both ran. Release timer benchmark assertions passed.
  • Windows lint and compatibility: PASS. Formatting, Clippy with warnings and unsafe-comment checks denied, documentation with warnings denied, stable Rust and declared MSRV 1.97.1.
  • Native local Windows 11 build 26200 validation also passed the contracts, interop, Clippy, documentation and MSRV checks. ZIP installer and UTF-8/path regression suites passed 3 and 9 tests.
  • All ten spike test binaries executed; the revised draft passes 3/3 tests. NT timer lateness at a 250 us delay: p50 275.2 us, p95 285.8 us, max 380.9 us, 100 samples. The original APC probe remains FAIL, not skipped or relaxed.

The last completed run (c65a622) had the same failures as its base on main: missing WASI/web contracts and the Linux all-feature file-backpressure test's zero_event_waits assertion (0 versus 1). This PR preserves that Unix assertion. The newer WASI/web integration is now merged into this branch; its combined CI results are pending. The completed run passed macOS native tests, all native lint jobs, protocol tests, HTTP/2 conformance, instruction counts, dependency checks, loom and Miri.

Limits: minimum Windows-version/VM/power-state matrices, ETW tracing and overnight soak are unrun. Console resize delivery requires an active console input read. Named-pipe listeners cannot be detached; imported overlapped regular files and non-Kill process signals return Unsupported. The optional self-hosted runner was not configured.

Native evidence and intermediate failures: WINDOWS_RESULTS.md. Ownership and implementation details: IOCP backend notes.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds a production Windows IOCP backend with sockets, pipes, processes, signals, timers, synchronous I/O, event integration, and handle passing. It enables Windows contract tests, records native validation, and updates CI for pinned HTTP/2-capable curl.

Changes

Windows IOCP backend

Layer / File(s) Summary
Platform wiring and completion primitives
crates/turnloop/Cargo.toml, crates/turnloop/src/backend/..., crates/turnloop/src/lib.rs, crates/turnloop/src/buffer.rs, spikes/iocp/backend_draft/mod.rs

# Conflicts:

The armed high-resolution timer completes through the port, so a quiet
deadline wait dequeued one TIMER packet and reported zero_event_waits = 0.
PollInfo's contract (and epoll's private timerfd) treats a private timeout
event as a timed wait returning zero; notifier and I/O packets still count.
Fixes quiet_deadline_waits_have_identical_accounting_without_allocations on
windows-2025.
The Windows-only zero_event_waits == 0 arm existed because IOCP reported its
private deadline timer packet as native work. With that fixed, the pool
exhaustion wait asserts the same single empty wait on every native backend.

Wait for each current timer completion.

AsyncIo::poll_close closes the socket, and the client closed while the
server's TLS 1.3 session tickets were still unread. Closing with unread bytes
sends RST; Windows then discards the payload and close_notify the server has
not read yet, so the server's read failed with WSAECONNABORTED on every
windows-2025 mode. The server now acknowledges the 32 KiB payload and the
client reads that acknowledgement (and the tickets before it) before close.
Fragmented reads, ALPN and close_notify -> EOF are still asserted.
…ause

Use TURNLOOP_TEST_CURL like interop.rs (on Windows it is the checksum-pinned
build, not whichever curl.exe is first on PATH). windows-2025 executor mode
once hit the 10 s deadline with the server task still pending even though curl
has --max-time 5; on timeout the test now reports curl's exit status and
stderr, so the next occurrence distinguishes a hung curl from a lost close.

Integrator review of the IOCP backend. I read it line by line (unsafe code, completion lifetimes, process/pipe/socket paths, tests, CI) and checked every item below against the code at the branch head. Nothing here was run on a Windows host except through CI.

CI: run 34899966713 on 28a49c8 is green (37/38 jobs; self-hosted-windows is skipped by design). On all three windows-2025 modes, the full contract suite passed, including the no-spin and zero-allocation gates, and the async TLS and curl tests ran and passed.

What I changed on this branch

  • 3eda5f6: merged main.
    • It carries the WASI cfg fixes and the Linux accounting fixes that made run 34884106892 red.
    • ci.yml conflict: the checksum-pinned curl install stays unconditional at step level, with a shell condition on RUNNER_OS, because the feature-coverage gate requires native mode steps to be unconditional.
  • e4cd9c8: a quiet deadline wait whose only dequeued packet is the private TIMER packet now reports zero_event_waits: 1.
    • That is the PollInfo contract in backend/mod.rs, and what epoll does with its private timerfd.
    • WAKE and I/O packets still count as events.
    • This fixes quiet_deadline_waits_have_identical_accounting_without_allocations on windows-2025.
  • 286647e: removed the #[cfg(windows)] assert_eq!(info.zero_event_waits, 0) arm in the pool-exhaustion test.
    • IOCP now meets the same single-empty-wait assertion as the other native backends.
    • The deadline no-spin gate is therefore no longer blind on IOCP.
  • eeb626e: fixed async_tls_alpn_fragmented_plaintext_and_close_notify, which failed on every windows-2025 mode with WSAECONNABORTED.
    • This was a test race, not an IOCP bug. AsyncIo::poll_close closes the socket, and the client closed while the server's TLS 1.3 session tickets were still unread. That sends RST, and Windows discards data the server hasn't read yet (Unix delivers it first).
    • The server now acknowledges the payload, and the client reads the acknowledgement (and the tickets before it) before closing. Every assertion is kept.
  • 28a49c8: curl_against_async_http1_server now uses TURNLOOP_TEST_CURL, as interop.rs does, and reports curl's exit status and stderr on timeout.
    • The executor mode once hit the 10 s deadline with the server task still pending, although curl has --max-time 5. See item 4 below.

Fix before merge

  1. Batch-file argument injection (the CVE-2024-24576 / CVE-2024-27980 class).
    • Where: process.rs program()/quote() → CreateProcessW.
    • Mechanism: a .bat/.cmd program runs through cmd.exe, which ignores MSVCRT quoting. An argument like "&calc runs a second command.
    • Fix: reject .bat/.cmd programs with InvalidInput. Node has done the same since April 2024 (EINVAL unless shell: true), so Perry's child_process has to route batch files through a shell anyway.
    • Test: a batch-file spawn fails with InvalidInput.
  2. close()/kill() race after the child exits.
    • Where: process.rs Child::close.
    • Mechanism: it calls TerminateProcess whenever the thread-pool wait callback hasn't set ready() yet. On an exited or exiting process that returns ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED, prepare_close propagates it, and the handle is never marked closing. kill() in the same window returns PermissionDenied instead of NotFound.
    • Fix: on ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED, check WaitForSingleObject(process, 0) == WAIT_OBJECT_0 and treat the child as exited (close → Ok, kill → NotFound), as Rust std and libuv do.
    • Test: a loop of spawn → kill → close asserting Ok, plus spawn → wait for natural exit → close before servicing the exit.
  3. One bad entry drops the rest of a dequeued batch.
    • Where: mod.rs entries() returns Err on the first unexpected entry, and poll runs self.timer.cancel()? before entries().
    • Effect: up to 63 already-dequeued completions are lost, their operations never complete, and Drop then blocks in poll(None).
    • Fix: process the whole batch, remember the first error, and return it afterwards. Handle the timer-cancel error the same way.
  4. Please reproduce on the Windows machine: curl_against_async_http1_server can hang.
    • Run (PowerShell): 1..200 | % { cargo test -p turnloop-http --features turnloop --test asynchronous curl_against; if ($LASTEXITCODE) { break } }.
    • It hung once in 3 windows-2025 modes (run 34898696633, executor). The server task was still pending 5 s after curl's --max-time should have closed the socket, which points at a lost read/close completion.
    • If it reproduces, it blocks merge like items 1–3.

Follow-ups (fine as issues after merge)

  1. The named-pipe listener behaves like backlog 1.
    • Only one spare instance exists, opts.backlog is ignored, and the client connect has no ERROR_PIPE_BUSY / WaitNamedPipeW retry.
    • Two clients connecting before the host services the accept makes the second one fail. libuv keeps several instances and retries.
  2. Accepted pipes are always routed = true (mod.rs Accept for PipeListener), even when they stay on this loop's own port.
    • Every read and write then goes through RegisterWaitForSingleObject (ntdll heap), a pool hop, and a blocking UnregisterWaitEx.
    • The counting allocator can't see this, so the IPC zero-allocation gate passes only nominally.
    • Skip the bridge when the association is to this port.
  3. The loopback SIO_TCP_INITIAL_RTO failure is fatal (socket.rs loopback_connect).
    • Fast-fail on loopback matches libuv, but libuv ignores the ioctl result; here a failure rejects every loopback open. Ignore it, as libuv does.
  4. Missing Windows equivalents from docs/BACKEND_REVISION_2.md:
    • close a live child (Cancelled → Closed, child reaped),
    • drop the loop with live children,
    • argv quoting and env/cwd,
    • worker-file FIFO ordering under drop.
    • Exit and signal delivery also have no Windows allocation gate now that the test is cfg(unix).
  5. Minor:
    • windows_lifetimes.rs never writes after cancel or drop, so its buffer-unchanged check can't fail.
    • CTRL_CLOSE_EVENT returns TRUE and pre-empts host handlers.
    • Duplex sync handles share one FIFO, so an idle read blocks writes.
    • CREATE_NO_WINDOW is unconditional, unlike Node when sharing the console.
    • KILL_ON_JOB_CLOSE kills grandchildren after a normal leader exit.
    • integration.rs stalls silently after its first pump error.
    • signals.rs keeps a raw pointer from &mut *Box after the Box moves; use Box::into_raw.
    • Stale docs:
      • CONTRIBUTING.md and docs/BACKEND_REVISION_2.md still say IOCP is pending.
      • DESIGN §7.3 still lists APC vs NT wait packet as open, while §15 q3 records the decision.
      • Is the timer "p50 275 µs on a 250 µs request" lateness or total elapsed?

Verified solid

  • OVERLAPPED and buffers stay pinned until the kernel acknowledges, and cancel never frees.
  • Drop cancels, then drains before fields drop.
  • Skip-on-success is enabled only for IFS handles, and synchronous successes are requeued without a port packet.
  • AcceptEx buffer sizing and the SO_UPDATE_* contexts are correct.
  • The zero-byte read re-arm is correct.
  • Handle transfer can't post to a stale port: the hEvent low bit, the joined UnregisterWaitEx, and the Arc<Port> all hold.
  • The NT timer uses generation-tagged packets with RemoveSignaledPacket on cancel.
  • The sync worker cancel race is closed.
  • Spawn goes suspended → job → wait → resume, with an explicit handle list.
  • No shared assertion was weakened, and the curl archive is sha256-pinned.

…pending timers

- Reject .bat/.cmd programs (explicit or via PATH) with InvalidInput before any
process setup: CreateProcessW runs them through cmd.exe, which ignores MSVCRT

- kill/close after the child exited but before the wait callback published

- entries() applies every dequeued completion and returns the first error

error, so already-dequeued operations can no longer be lost.
- NtCancelWaitCompletionPacket STATUS_PENDING on the wait path keeps the timer
pending until its generation's TIMER packet is dequeued, as the Event path did.
- A cancelled child exit watch completes with Cancelled immediately instead of
waiting for the child to exit.
- Loopback SIO_TCP_INITIAL_RTO is best-effort, as in libuv; signal tickets use
  Box::into_raw/from_raw ownership.
- windows_lifetimes.rs serializes its handle-creating tests around the exact
handle-count baseline, and the post-cancel buffer check now writes data so it
  can fail.
- Docs: IOCP is the production provider; DESIGN 7.3 records the NT wait-packet
  decision.

Eleven new Windows tests cover these; see docs/lanes/iocp-fix1.md.
…fails

windows-2025 CI for 87a44cd: the 200x spawn -> kill -> close loop failed with
ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED. TerminateProcess only starts termination; close() called
it again while the process was terminating but its handle was not yet
signaled, and the previous check required a signaled handle.

Child now records a successful termination request (process or job): close()
after it proceeds to Cancelled -> real exit -> Closed without terminating
again, and a second kill() returns NotFound. On ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED the exit
code (set when termination begins, as libuv's uv_kill checks) or a signaled
handle means exiting. Drop requests termination only if none succeeded and
still joins the real exit. windows_lifetimes.rs recovers the handle-test mutex
from poisoning so one failure no longer cascades. The 200x loops are unchanged.
…s timer

protocol-wasi (wasm32-wasip3) failed twice at case 2's peer-EOF assertion: on
a slow runtime the client's 2 ms continue timeout expired before the server's
early 417 arrived, so the client correctly started the upload. The code built
for WASI was unchanged between the green and red runs. Cases 0 and 1 still use
the 2 ms timeout they depend on; case 2, which proves that an early final
response suppresses the upload, uses a client with a 30 s continue timeout.
console_input_resize_and_modes_restore failed once in windows-2025
all-features (run 34912831069) at the empty-output check after starting the
reader: a new console can already hold conhost buffer-size/focus records, so
the resize watch or reader completed before the test wrote anything. The
input buffer is now flushed before the watch and read start, so the test
observes only the records it writes, and the empty check prints any
unexpected completion.

The review findings are fixed, and CI run 34913273537 on 8566cd2 is green: every job plus ci-gate, including all three windows-2025 modes and WASI 0.3.

  • 87a44cd: review items 1–3, CodeRabbit's three findings, and the quick wins.
    • .bat/.cmd programs are rejected before spawn.
    • entries() applies the whole batch before returning an error.
    • STATUS_PENDING timer cancels are deferred until the matching packet is dequeued.
    • A cancelled child exit watch completes immediately.
    • windows_lifetimes.rs handle tests are serialized.
    • The loopback RTO ioctl is best-effort.
    • Signal tickets use Box::into_raw ownership.
    • The post-cancel buffer check can now fail.
    • Docs are updated.
    • Eleven new Windows tests cover these.
  • c487796: close after kill. The new 200× spawn → kill → close loop caught ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED on real Windows. TerminateProcess only starts termination, and close called it again. A successful termination request is now tracked (close proceeds, a second kill returns NotFound), and ACCESS_DENIED is interpreted from the exit code, as libuv does.
  • 79008a5: WASI 0.3 flake. Case 2 of the async expect-continue test (early 417 suppresses the upload) no longer races a 2 ms continue timer.
  • 8566cd2: console test. It flushes conhost's own input records before asserting that nothing completed yet.

Still open, as follow-up issues:

  • the named-pipe backlog and ERROR_PIPE_BUSY retry,
  • routed accepted pipes on the same port,
  • the remaining BACKEND_REVISION_2 Windows test equivalents,
  • CTRL_CLOSE_EVENT / CREATE_NO_WINDOW / KILL_ON_JOB_CLOSE semantics.
