Makes cancelled_udp_with_cached_events_survives_exact_fd_and_port_reuse and the second affected UDP reuse test deterministic under parallel test execution.

  • Cause (reproduced): dup2 closes the old socket, releasing its ephemeral port, before the replacement binds that exact port. A concurrently running test binding port 0 can take it in between, and bind fails with EADDRINUSE (errno 48).
  • Fix: retry the whole iteration on a fresh ephemeral port, only on EADDRINUSE and at most 16 times. Any other errno, or exhausting the attempts, fails with the errno in the message. A strictness test pins the limit and the errno filter. Production code is unchanged.
  • Verification: 20 parallel cargo test -p turnloop runs, and 2,000 runs of the reproducer (scripts/stress-udp-reuse.py) on the final source. Lane report: docs/lanes/udp-fix.md.

Windows jobs stay red until #5 merges (backend::Platform). The default parallel workspace run also needs #6's SIGCHLD fixture isolation.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved reliability when reusing released UDP ports by handling transient address-in-use errors with controlled retries.
  • Tests

    • Added strict validation for retry limits and error handling.
    • Added stress coverage for IPv4 and IPv6 UDP port reuse under contention.
  • Documentation

    • Documented UDP rebinding behavior, verification results, and platform test coverage.
  • Chores

    • Added a standalone stress-test tool for repeatedly exercising UDP release and rebinding scenarios.

cancelled_udp_with_cached_events_survives_exact_fd_and_port_reuse failed once
in a default parallel workspace run at the raw rebind. dup2 closes the old
socket, releasing its ephemeral port, before the replacement binds that exact
port; a concurrently running test binding port 0 can take it in between. A
controlled reproducer confirmed EADDRINUSE (errno 48).

Both affected UDP tests now retry the whole iteration on a fresh ephemeral
port, only on EADDRINUSE and at most 16 times; any other errno, or exhausting
the attempts, fails with the errno in the message. Every assertion of a
successful iteration still runs, and a strictness test pins the retry limit
and errno filter. Production code is unchanged. scripts/stress-udp-reuse.py
is the reproducer.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The UDP rebinding tests now retry complete fixtures for exact EADDRINUSE failures, with a 16-attempt limit. A stress harness and lane report document repeated contention testing and verification results.

Changes

UDP rebind reliability

Layer / File(s) Summary
Retry contract and validation
crates/turnloop/src/backend/unix.rs
Adds bounded retry handling for exact EADDRINUSE errors. New tests verify exhaustion, attempt counts, and strict errno matching.
UDP fixture integration
crates/turnloop/src/backend/unix.rs
Applies the helper to two UDP rebinding fixtures. Bind failures now propagate so eligible races can be retried.
Stress harness and verification report
scripts/stress-udp-reuse.py, docs/lanes/udp-fix.md
Adds repeated UDP test execution during IPv4 and IPv6 socket churn. Documents test results, scope, and remaining runtime-test limitations.

The new stress command can report success without exercising the strict retry-limit test. Require every selected test before relying on its verification result.

📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

The harness filters four UDP tests but only requires output for three, so it can report a successful stress run if udp_rebind_retry_limit_and_errno_are_strict is no longer executed. Require all four selected test results (or the expected test count) before accepting an iteration.
