If the environment variable named by
api_key_envholds a value that is not valid Unicode, the server prints the API key in its startup error. A bad paste, a file saved in the wrong encoding, or a stray control byte can cause this. The key then appears in the terminal, in any log that captures startup output (systemd, Docker, CI), and in any bug report that quotes the error. The cause is in Rust's standard library.
std::env::varreturnsVarError::NotUnicodewith a copy of the value, and that error's message prints the value.read_api_keycopied the message into its own error. For example, with a keysk-abc123that ends in one bad byte:read_api_keynow writes its own reason for eachVarErrorcase and never prints the value:read_api_keyalso rejects a variable name that contains=or NUL, withapi_key_env must not contain '=' or NUL. On macOS, readingFOO=xreturns the value ofFOO, so a typo would make the config use a different variable than it names. Rust already treats a name with NUL as not set; the check gives it the same clear error.invalid_unicode_api_key_is_not_printedsets a variable toDUMMY_SECRET_DO_NOT_LOGfollowed by an invalid byte and checks that the error says "not valid Unicode" without the value. Onmainit fails, and the failure message contains"DUMMY_SECRET_DO_NOT_LOG\xFF". A new assertion inapi_key_environment_reference_is_validatedcovers the=name, and it fails without the check. The desktop installer in #973 saves
api_key_envcredentials in macOS Keychain and Windows Credential Manager and promises that its diagnostics never print them. That promise depends on this change. This PR does not cover a key pasted into
api_key_envitself, such asapi_key_env = "sk-abc123". The "not found" error still prints the variable name, which is then the key.
