feat(desktop): record session launches and open harnesses in existing worktrees - #1146
Stacked on #1112. This PR targets emehtabuddin/s31-desktop-session-tests, so the diff shows only this change. Its sibling #1079 adds the transcript reader on main; the two are independent.
What
Groundwork for continuing a coding session in another harness (Claude Code ⇄ Codex). Nothing in the apps changes yet.
sessions::launch is split into create_worktree and open_harness (the Windows branch included), so a later change can open another harness in a worktree that already exists.
Each session receipt records relative_directory and a launches list (tool, route, account_directory, settings_directory, started_at, native_session_id). The top-level tool, route, account_directory, and settings_directory keep mirroring the latest launch, so both apps read receipts as before.
Claude launches pass --session-id, and the receipt records that UUID, so the session's transcript path is known without reading any transcript. The value is a time-ordered UUID relabeled as version 4, like Claude's own session IDs, so no new uuid feature is needed.
The desktop README arrives later in this stack (#1119), so the sentence describing launches and --session-id is left for that README rather than added here.
Why
A developer who moves a task from Claude Code to Codex re-explains the goal, the files touched, and what was tried. The next change adds a Continue in … action that writes a bounded text hand-off from the source session's transcript and launches the destination harness in the same worktree. That needs a launch step that works in an existing worktree and receipts that know which harnesses ran there and where the Claude transcript is.
Notes for reviewers
Start with launch and open_harness in sessions.rs. The split preserves the previous ordering: the receipt is written before the harness opens, and PendingSession still removes the worktree, branch, and private settings when any step fails. The existing child-process fixture passes unchanged and now also asserts relative_directory, the launches entry, and that the --session-id value on Claude's command line matches the receipt.
Not verified here: that a current Claude Code build accepts --session-id together with --settings and --model in interactive mode (2.1.x documents the flag). This should be smoke-tested on macOS before the "Continue in …" change lands; if a build rejects the flag, it is one line to drop.
Evidence
On Linux with Rust 1.99: cargo fmt --check, cargo clippy --all-targets -p switchyard-desktop -- -D warnings, and cargo test -p switchyard-desktop (7 library tests, 24 binary tests, and the integration tests) pass.

Walkthrough
The change adds terminal and TUI entry points alongside the desktop GUI. It adds shared services for server routes, harness settings, accounts, model listings, worktree sessions, and usage summaries, with a controller that coordinates application state and actions.

Layer / File(s)
Summary
Route editing and server configuration crates/switchyard-desktop/src/server_config.rs, crates/switchyard-desktop/src/server.rs, crates/switchyard-desktop/src/install/windows.rs
The new TOML editor reads and changes routes, algorithms, targets, and generated-block markers. Server operations validate edits, create backups, replace configuration files, manage keys, and restart the server with health checks.
Harness settings preview, install, and restore crates/switchyard-desktop/src/harness.rs
Harness settings can be inspected and previewed before reviewed installation. Restore receipts, recovery copies, staged replacement, and executable discovery are added for Codex, Claude, and Pi settings.
Accounts and model listings crates/switchyard-desktop/src/accounts.rs, crates/switchyard-desktop/src/models.rs, crates/switchyard-desktop/src/install/windows.rs
Named Codex and Claude accounts can be discovered, created, used for login, and archived. Model listings use endpoint requests or local caches, with credential selection and platform-specific key storage.
Worktree session lifecycle and terminal launch crates/switchyard-desktop/src/sessions.rs, crates/switchyard-desktop/src/windows.rs, crates/switchyard-desktop/tests/windows_terminal.rs
Session operations preview checkouts, create worktrees, launch supported harnesses, inventory receipts, and validate cleanup reviews. Windows terminal jobs apply launch arguments and environment changes.
Usage history, pricing, and summaries crates/switchyard-desktop/src/history.rs, crates/switchyard-desktop/src/pricing.rs, crates/switchyard-desktop/src/rollup.rs, crates/switchyard-desktop/src/summary.rs
Recent call history is bounded by byte and record limits. Pricing estimates and savings feed formatted server, token, model-share, and spending summaries.
Shared controller actions and snapshots crates/switchyard-desktop/src/controller.rs
The controller builds application snapshots and dispatches configuration, harness, account, session, credential, preference, and update actions. Reviewed operations check tokens, inputs, and file contents.
CLI, TUI, and GUI entry points crates/switchyard-desktop/src/main.rs, crates/switchyard-desktop/src/Cargo.toml
The CLI adds --tui and --print, routes Windows terminal-job launches, and selects GUI or terminal behavior based on flags and platform. The package description and a popup sizing comment are updated.
Creating or duplicating a route could write a broken server configuration if an older compatible toml_edit release is resolved. Launching a session twice with the same review creates duplicate worktrees. Launching from an ignored or untracked subdirectory leaves a stale session behind without an error. Fix the route table positioning before merge; the two launch issues are small, local fixes.

Use each launch review only once, so a repeated Launch cannot create a second session.
self.launch_review stays set after sessions::launch succeeds. A second Launch with the same preview_token passes every check:
Review::check compares the server config and the app settings. A launch does not change either file.
sessions::preview returns the same revision, branch, and dirty values. A new worktree does not change the original checkout's status.
The second call therefore creates another worktree and branch and opens another Terminal window. A double submit or a retried request can cause this. Other reviewed actions do not have this problem: after Install, Restore, ArchiveAccount, or RemoveSession, the reviewed state changes and the token stops working. Clear the review after a successful launch.

Do not use Some(-1) for new route tables.
The 0.25 dependency range permits toml_edit versions before 0.25.12. In those versions, DocumentMut sorts tables by position, with the root table at position 0. A route table at -1 can therefore print before the root table. schema_version and other root keys can become part of the new route, producing an invalid configuration.
Place new route tables after the root and preserve the intended ordering for targets outside generated blocks. Add regression tests for both create and duplicate using GATEWAY. Assert that schema_version remains a root key and validate the result with switchyard_runner::Runner::from_toml.

Check that the relative start directory exists in the new worktree before opening the harness.
launch sets directory: worktree.join(&relative). The value of relative comes from the user's project path inside the original checkout. git worktree add creates only tracked content, so the joined path can be missing. Three cases cause this:
The project is an ignored subdirectory, such as build/ or target/.
The project is an untracked subdirectory.
The project is a directory that holds only untracked or empty content.
In each case, the harness does not start:
On Unix, the script runs cd … || exit 1, and the Terminal window exits without starting the harness.
On Windows, Command::current_dir fails, and the job reports "Could not start the harness".
In both cases, open_harness already returned Ok, so pending.opened = true is set. The worktree, the branch, the private settings, and a receipt with relative_directory stay on disk, and the user gets no error from launch.
Check the directory after create_worktree and before the receipt is written. If the check fails, return an error, and the PendingSession drop then removes the partial session. The future hand-off flow also reuses relative_directory, so the receipt must record only a valid value.
