Resources (PRs #850 and #905) have no user documentation; the only example is a test plugin. Add a user-guide page covering:

Also add Doxygen comments to resources_graph_proxy's registration functions and to phlex::resource.

Assisted by: Claude Haiku 5.5

Documentation

  • Added a user guide for unlimited and serialized resources, resource registration and configuration, and use with resource<T>{} in input_family(...).
  • Documented token construction rules, algorithm parameter types, concurrency behavior, and current resource limitations, including the oneTBB 2023.0.0 requirement.
  • Recommended sharing resource type definitions between the registering plugin and consuming algorithm modules.

API documentation

  • Added Doxygen comments for resource<T> and the resource registration functions in resources_graph_proxy.
  • Clarified resource ownership, registration constraints, and the serialized-resource token requirements.

Tests

  • Test results were not provided.

Resources (PRs Framework-R-D#850 and Framework-R-D#905) have no user documentation; the only
example is a test plugin. Add a user-guide page covering:

- unlimited and serialized resources, and the parameter type an
  algorithm receives for each, including how serialized tokens are made
- registering them with PHLEX_REGISTER_RESOURCES and the top-level
  resources table
- declaring them with resource<T>{} in input_family(...)
- current limitations (issues Framework-R-D#945 and Framework-R-D#946, no pooled resources, oneTBB
  resource_limiter requirement)

Also add Doxygen comments to resources_graph_proxy's registration
functions and to phlex::resource.

Explanation

The title "docs: document resources" matches the main change. The PR adds a user-guide page for Phlex resources (unlimited and serialized), and also adds Doxygen comments to the resource registration API. The title is short and uses the conventional docs: prefix. It is slightly broad because it does not name the resource types, but it identifies the primary change.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

No eligible functions found in the changed files. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 0 functions across 2 files. The documentation is largely consistent with the resource implementation and existing tests. Unlimited access, serialized token selection, resource argument order, cross-node serialization, plugin configuration/loading, and the listed API limitations match the inspected code. The v0.4.0 introduction claim also matches the release notes.

Please make the serialized-resource construction contract explicit, as detailed inline: custom token generation must be callable on a const resource, and the self-token case requires a copy-constructible resource. The other inline comments are nonblocking suggestions about shared resource declarations and the first supporting oneTBB release.

Reviewed a53fa6a against ce771e1, including resource unit tests, node-builder concurrency/order tests, plugin-integration tests, and the relevant geometry/provider examples in phlex-examples. Local C++23 compile-only probes confirmed the resource classification and token-construction restrictions with -Wall -Wextra -Werror. Both amd64 and arm64 CI build/test steps succeeded. Full C++ tests were not rerun locally because the configured builds target Linux and the Podman service was unavailable.

[P2] Please document the construction constraints for these two cases. phlex/core/resource/concepts.hpp checks the custom token() expression on T const&, so a non-const-only member is rejected by add_serialized_resource even though it fits the description here. For example:

struct service {
  using token_type = int;
  int token() { return 42; }
};

State that the fallback must be callable on a const resource and return something convertible to token_type; a token_type token() const member or a suitable static member works. The self-token case also requires a copy-constructible resource. Existing tests exercise static and const-member token generation, and compile-only probes confirmed rejection of the mutable-only member and noncopyable self-token cases. Please keep the new add_serialized_resource Doxygen comment in phlex/resource.hpp consistent with this clarification.

@greenc-FNAL, it's a little unspecific to say that the fallback must be callable on a const resource. The second part of the sentence is better: the token() function must either be a static member function or a const-qualified member function.

Thank you to you both, addressed in 6d45107. I used @knoepfel 's wording: the fallback token() must be a static or const-qualified member function returning something convertible to token_type, and a non-const token() is rejected. The page also notes that a resource whose token_type is itself must be copy-constructible. The add_serialized_resource Doxygen comment in phlex/resource.hpp now says the same.

I had a look at the rules with compile-only probes against concepts.hpp. A static token(), a const token(), a pointer token and a copyable self-token are accepted; a mutable-only token() and a non-copyable self-token are rejected.

Nonblocking: please add a sentence explaining that these resource definitions should live in a common header included by both the registering resource plugin and every consuming algorithm module. That is the pattern used by test/plugins/resources_for_testing.hpp. The geometry example in phlex-examples likewise shares declarations through my_geometry.hpp, although it currently supplies geometry as a job-layer data product rather than a registered resource. A separate shared resource library is not generally required for the header-only types shown here: the existing resource integration test links the registration and consumer plugins separately.

Added in 6d45107 right after the registration example. Resource types should be defined in a header included by both the registering plugin and every consuming module, which is what test/plugins/resources_for_testing.hpp does. The page also notes that header-only types like these need no separate shared library.

Nonblocking: please identify oneTBB 2023.0.0 as the earliest released version supporting resource-limited execution, so users can select a compatible release without trial and error. Its release notes explicitly introduce the preview flow::resource_limited_node and flow::resource_limiter classes. Suggested replacement for this line (leaving the following lines unchanged):

Suggested change
- Phlex needs a oneTBB that provides the preview ``flow::resource_limiter``
- Phlex needs `oneTBB 2023.0.0 or later <https://github.com/uxlfoundation/oneTBB/releases#release-v2023.0.0>`_, which provides the preview ``flow::resource_limiter``

Applied in 6d45107 with your link, wrapped to match the rest of the page, so I didn’t use the suggestion button. The line now names oneTBB 2023.0.0 or later as providing the preview flow::resource_limiter.

- State the construction constraints for serialized-resource tokens:
  a self-token resource must be copy-constructible, and a token() used
  as the fallback must be a static or const-qualified member function
  returning something convertible to token_type; a non-const token() is
  rejected. Keep the add_serialized_resource Doxygen comment consistent.
- Recommend defining resource types in a header shared by the
  registering plugin and the consuming modules, as
  test/plugins/resources_for_testing.hpp does.
- Name oneTBB 2023.0.0 as the earliest release providing the preview
  flow::resource_limiter.
