## Getting the engine

(v0.29.1 changed where the first engine comes from; see the next section.)

The agent fetches the engine from the official OpenCU GitHub release on first
use and caches it by hash in `files/wanctl/opencu/`, inside the app's config
directory. File operations refuse the config directory's whole tree by path, by

for Android without portal changes. `WANCTL_OPENCU_ANDROID_URL` (a directory
holding the manifest and jar) overrides the source for testing and self-hosting.

## Change in v0.29.1: the engine ships inside the APK

Downloading from GitHub failed on the first real use over the relay. On a home
network in China the phone could not reach github.com (a 90-second timeout), and
because failed attempts count against the 24-hour interval, even with no engine
at all, every later call returned the same error without trying again until the
interval expired. Restarting the agent did not help, by design. wanctl's own
updates survive this through the relay mirror; the engine had no such path.

The jar is 68 KB and is held in memory for placement anyway, so the Android build
now embeds the jar and its manifest from an OpenCU release, unchanged
(`internal/opencu/androidengine/`). Mirroring it on the relay was the alternative:
that keeps the wanctl repository free of a binary, but adds a release step, a
relay allowlist entry, a fallback path, and a new way to bind the hash to the
signed release. Embedding needs none of them, and the APK signature already
covers the bytes, which is stronger than the HTTPS-plus-manifest trust of a
download.

- There is now always an engine, so a failed refresh cannot lock anyone out. A
refresh gets 10 seconds when an engine is available, so an unreachable release
does not stall a call.
- A download is used only if newer than the built-in engine; the same or an older
release costs one manifest request and no jar. An app update with a newer
built-in engine takes over from an older download.
- `WANCTL_OPENCU_ANDROID_URL` still means "use this source": its engine wins
whatever its version, and the built-in one stands in only until it has supplied
one.

The costs are that a phone that cannot reach GitHub gets a new engine only with a
new wanctl release, and that each engine bump commits a binary to this repository.
A test fails if the jar and its manifest disagree.

## Consequences
