Overlapping operations on one computer could lose data or report the wrong state. Serialize them with a per-computer lifecycle lock: - create holds the lock through networking, so delete waits for setup - restore holds the snapshot locks through the artifact copy, so snapshot deletion cannot remove its input - facade start/async_start decide from current inventory state under the lock instead of the handle's cached status - refresh_status only demotes the row that still records the dead PID - prune re-checks ownership under the lock before deleting each file Locks poll instead of blocking, so waiters never park a thread and can be cancelled. Lifecycle waits are bounded (30s) with an actionable error; snapshot locks keep their previous unbounded wait.

Address CodeRabbit review feedback on CelestoAI#661: - Operation locks created under sudo (lifecycle lock, locks/ dir) were left owned by root, causing a later non-sudo lifecycle command to hit an untranslated PermissionError in _lock_is_busy and abort pruning in prune_leftover_artifacts. Open lock files with os.open/os.fdopen instead of Path.open("w") to avoid truncating an existing lock, and realign ownership to the sudo-invoking user via _ensure_path_owner in both _acquire_operation_lock and _async_acquire_operation_lock. - _async_lifecycle_lock was annotated Iterator[None] despite being an async generator; mypy rejects that under @asynccontextmanager. Fix the return type to AsyncIterator[None].

integration test using a real CelestoManager with fcntl that stops a VM and
verifies another process can immediately acquire the lock.

os.fdopen() sets the file's name to its descriptor, so Path(lock_file.name) raised TypeError on every release. The flock stayed held, the descriptor leaked, and every locked lifecycle call failed after doing its work. Keep the lock path on the token, and only drop the thread's registry entry when it is this token.
…oordination Resolve conflicts in src/celesto/vm.py with upstream's sandbox security hardening (CelestoAI#687), which added a per-session operation claim (_vm_operation_guard) to start, stop and delete. Start, stop and delete (sync and async) and start_from_current_state now take the operation claim first, then the lifecycle lock, then run upstream's _*_claimed body. The claim fails fast instead of waiting, so a second caller in the same session gets upstream's busy error rather than polling a lock its own event loop may need to release. Callers in other sessions or processes still wait on the lifecycle lock. The _start_locked, _stop_locked and _delete_locked wrappers (and async twins) are folded into upstream's _*_claimed functions. Delete's nested stop and restore's stop call _stop_claimed; restore claims the VM first, as upstream's call to stop() did. Upstream's public-browsing restore check moves into _restore_snapshot_locked, and its managed-disk asserts move into _create_locked and _async_create_locked. tests/lifecycle_decision.py now stubs _start_claimed and _async_start_claimed and sets up the state the real claim reads.

Hey @Shiva953 , Will check this today. Thanks for the PR !! |
Summary
Overlapping lifecycle operations on the same computer could lose data or report incorrect state. Five remaining race conditions were reproduced with real QEMU guests on macOS:
This PR adds a per-computer lifecycle lock and coordinates conflicting operations so that resources remain valid throughout each lifecycle transition.
Changes
Lifecycle coordination (

<name>.lifecycle.lock, replacing<name>.create.lock.stopfail with "busy".Regression tests
tests/e2e/test_lifecycle_coordination.pywith live regression coverage using real QEMU guests.refresh_statustests and added isolated coverage for the in-memory store.Behavior changes
errorstate now raises instead of silently doing nothing.<name>.create.lockto<name>.lifecycle.lock. Older and newer Celesto processes sharing a data directory do not coordinate through the same lock, so mixed-version concurrent access is not supported. The public API is unchanged.
