Design entries for two gaps HubSPO-rs listed in its comms API map (.claude/knowledge/comms-api-surface.md §2, items 2 and 4). Docs only.

V17 — mailbox delegation. Exchange's three rights on a recipient, kept distinct:

  • FullAccess: read the mailbox as its owner.
  • SendAs: From is the recipient, with no trace of the trustee.
  • SendOnBehalf: From is the recipient, Sender is the trustee.

Decisions:

  • A grant is a relation (object, trustee, right), like a membership. It is never a node property.
  • The trustee is a user or a group. Rights reach a user through group membership, transitively.
  • Every grant carries the witness that asserted it:
    • LDIF: publicDelegates, and the automapped subset of FullAccess.
    • Graph: none.
    • The Exchange permission output: all three.
  • In Spear, FullAccess opens the mailbox's rows to the trustee. SendAs and SendOnBehalf gate sending.
  • Not modelled: folder permissions, calendar delegates, deny entries.

V18 — document access. Open. It records the SharePoint/OneDrive model (roles granted on site, library, folder or item, inheritance until broken, sharing links) and a proposal:

  • grants are relations;
  • the effective role is the highest one granted up to the nearest inheritance break;
  • sharing links are principals of their own kind;
  • Spear evaluates access with an RBAC plug over the document classid.

The open questions are listed with it.

Implementation follows V17 in OGAR (relation type and changes), lance-graph dir-sim (relation and effective-right resolution) and Spear (mailbox IAM).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Documented mailbox delegation rights, including how different permission types and deny rules are evaluated across supported data sources.
    • Outlined document access models for record attachments, library and OneDrive files, inherited permissions, and sharing links.
    • Recorded open design questions and noted that folder-level permissions and calendar delegates are not covered.

Review from the HubSPO-rs side (the consumer whose comms API map started V17/V18).

V17 covers the delegation ask, and covers it more precisely than the HubSPO-rs handover (#345, merged). The three rights stay distinct, grants are relations, group trustees are covered, and each grant records the witness that asserted it. V18 states the document-access gap correctly. Five points to settle before implementation:

  1. Deny entries fail open. V17 does not model the deny entries Exchange allows on FullAccess. If only grants are read, a trustee Exchange denies would still read the mailbox. Suggest: when a witness reports a deny for (object, trustee, FullAccess), the grant is dropped, or held as a violation, never applied.

  2. Transitive groups need an expansion dir-sim does not have yet. "Granted to any group the user belongs to, transitively" relies on nested-group expansion. dir-sim keeps a nested group by identity and never expands it (lance-graph crates/lance-graph-dir-sim/src/snapshot.rs:38-41). That is W-4 in lance-graph's .claude/handovers/2026-10-10-1600-hubspo-rs-to-lance-graph.md. Worth naming it as a dependency of V17.

  3. A group can be the object of SendAs / SendOnBehalf. Exchange allows both on distribution groups. Only FullAccess needs a mailbox. The HubSPO-rs handover in Handover: HubSPO-rs wishlist for dir-sim (delegation, directory actors, persisted versions) #345 wrongly listed "a group as owner" as a violation for every right. I am correcting it in a follow-up PR; V17's wording is the right one.

  4. Sending through stalwart. stalwart's EmailSubmission/set refuses an envelope mailFrom that differs from the identity's address (forbiddenFrom, crates/jmap/src/submission/set.rs:537-542 in the fork).

    • SendOnBehalf fits: the trustee's own identity, plus Sender set to the trustee.
    • For SendAs, I have not verified whether the trustee's account may hold an identity with the owner's address. If it may not, SendAs needs master-user impersonation (user%master, Impersonate permission) after the V17 check. "The consumer picks the identity" should state which of the two applies.
  5. Two regimes in V18. Files attached to CRM records (a ticket's or a deal's attachments in HubSPO-rs) take their access from the record they belong to, not from SharePoint grants. Suggest V18 say so explicitly, so CRM attachments are not forced into the SharePoint model.

…endOnBehalf

The HubSPO-rs handover listed a group as owner as a violation for every
mailbox right; it holds for FullAccess only. Adds the deny-entry and
nested-group dependencies raised on #344. Appended, not edited.

V17 models Exchange's three mailbox rights (FullAccess, SendAs,
SendOnBehalf) as (object, trustee, right) relations with their witness,
resolved through group membership. V18 records the SharePoint/OneDrive
document-access proposal as open. Both answer gaps HubSPO-rs listed in
its comms API map.

…lwart sends; two document regimes

Folds in the HubSPO-rs review on #344:
- FullAccess needs a mailbox; SendAs and SendOnBehalf also apply to a
  distribution group.
- group trustees reach users through nested-group expansion, which dir-sim
  does not have yet (lance-graph W-4); until then only direct members.
- a deny from any witness removes the right and is reported; grants alone
  would fail open.
- sending through Stalwart: an identity may only carry its own account's
  addresses, so SendOnBehalf goes from the trustee's account with Sender
  set, and SendAs goes to the object's account by master-user
  impersonation after the V17 check.
- V18: record attachments take access from their record; only library and
  OneDrive files follow the SharePoint model.

All five points are folded into V17/V18 in 93d048e:

  1. Deny wins. A deny for (object, trustee, right) from any witness, on the user or on any group they belong to, removes the right whatever grants exist. A deny that cancels a grant is reported. This covers FullAccess (Exchange) and SendAs (an AD deny entry).

  2. Nested groups are named as a dependency (lance-graph W-4). Until expansion lands, a grant to a group reaches only its direct members.

  3. Object types. FullAccess needs a mailbox; a grant of it on anything else is a violation. SendAs and SendOnBehalf also apply to distribution groups.

  4. Sending through Stalwart. Checked in the fork:

    • identity/set.rs refuses an identity whose address is not one of the account's own ("E-mail address not configured for this account").
    • submission/set.rs refuses an envelope mailFrom that differs from the identity (forbiddenFrom).

    So SendOnBehalf goes from the trustee's own account and identity, with Sender set to the trustee. SendAs goes to the object's account through master-user impersonation, after the V17 check. Either way the consumer checks V17 before submitting, because Stalwart knows nothing of it.

  5. V18 now has two regimes. Files attached to a record take their access from that record. Only library and OneDrive files follow the SharePoint model.

… scope

Graph does not return inheritedFrom for SharePoint and OneDrive for
Business, so inheritance is read from the parentReference walk and
SharePoint's HasUniqueRoleAssignments flag. A sharing link keeps its
scope: only anonymous links admit any holder; organization links need a
user signed in to the tenant; users links admit only their named
identities.

…Behalf source, link scope and expiry

Review findings left open when #344 merged:
- FullAccess and SendAs need a user or a security-enabled group;
  SendOnBehalf also accepts mail-enabled distribution groups and is
  reached through the delivery closure.
- Denies follow Windows canonical ACE order with IsInherited kept; an
  explicit allow outranks an inherited deny; an unreported level is
  treated as explicit.
- SendOnBehalf is read from the GrantSendOnBehalfTo property via
  Get-Mailbox / Get-DistributionGroup / Get-DynamicDistributionGroup.
- SendAs on a distribution group has no impersonation target; the
  consumer refuses it until a group-sending path exists.
- existingAccess links grant nothing; expired grants are refused;
  caller-scoped Graph permission reads never decide others' access.
