fix(webext): keep backgrounds loaded while a desktop app is connected - #340
WebKit unloads an idle extension background after a few minutes even while a native messaging host is connected to it. Chrome keeps it running. Bitwarden then loses its session with the desktop app and has to redo the handshake on the next popup, so Touch ID unlock shows late or not at all (#338).
While any port to a desktop app is open, its background is now woken every 20 seconds (with 5 s timer tolerance), so it never counts as idle. The timer stops at the next tick after the last port closes. One-off sendNativeMessage calls are unaffected.
Checks
Lab: an extension with a port to a host that stays open. Before, the background restarted and the host closed within 200 s idle. After, the same background and port are still alive at 200 s.
Trade-off: like Chrome, an extension that stays connected to its desktop app (1Password) keeps its background loaded instead of shedding memory when idle.

Refs #338
connect starts a repeating 20-second timer for long-lived native-messaging ports. The timer loads matching extension backgrounds, deduplicates profile-extension pairs, excludes one-off connections, and stops when no port-backed connections remain.
connect starts a repeating timer. Each tick loads backgrounds for distinct profile-extension pairs with open ports. The timer is invalidated when no port-backed connections remain. A test checks deduplication and exclusion of closed ports.
zephium-browser/Zephium#338: The issue describes unreliable Bitwarden biometric unlock and popup recovery. This change keeps the native-messaging background active while a port remains open, which relates to the reported session and popup behavior.

The timer keeps connected extension backgrounds awake. Lifecycle tests would improve regression protection, but no merge-blocking failure is established.

Explanation
Only crates/zephium-webext-macos/src/native.rs changed. The additions implement the described keep-awake timer, common run-loop modes, port/profile deduplication, and focused tests. The two commits address the same background-keepalive purpose. No unrelated refactor, rename, or formatting change appears in the reviewed diff.

PASS. The PR is a contained bug fix in one file (crates/zephium-webext-macos/src/native.rs). The description also links issue #338 with Refs. It does not add a user-facing UI or refactor across modules.
Full details: Generated Files Follow Their Source
Explanation
The pull request changes only crates/zephium-webext-macos/src/native.rs. It does not change frame/src/shared/ipc/bindings.ts, Cargo.lock, pnpm-lock.yaml, or files under frame/src/shared/i18n; therefore no generated-file consistency condition applies.
Full details: Privileged Boundary Intact
Explanation
The PR changes only crates/zephium-webext-macos/src/native.rs. The added code schedules an NSTimer, groups open native-message connections, and calls loadBackgroundContentWithCompletionHandler. It does not add Tauri IPC, a Wry IPC handler, a privileged initialization object, a custom protocol, CSP changes, release devtools, or a privileged command. Existing native-host admission remains Rust-validated through extension permission, context identity, host-name, manifest, and allowed-origin checks.
Full details: Performance Impact Stated
Explanation
The PR changes only crates/zephium-webext-macos/src/native.rs and adds conditional 20-second keep-awake work for open native-message ports. The description states the performance trade-off (connected extensions keep backgrounds loaded and use more memory) and reports a 200-second lab measurement. This satisfies the check.
Full details: Tests Cover Changed Behavior
Explanation
The PR adds one unit test for awake at crates/zephium-webext-macos/src/native.rs:832-847. That test covers deduplication and filters closed or one-off entries. It does not call connect or keep_awake, fire a timer tick, verify background reloads, verify timer invalidation after the last port closes, or verify that send remains unaffected. The changed Rust behavior in connect and the timer therefore remains untested.
Resolution
Add tests that exercise the timer behavior, not only the awake helper. Cover a long-lived connect port causing periodic background reloads, deduplicate multiple ports across profiles and extensions, invalidate the timer after the last port closes, and keep send from scheduling a wake. Retain an explicit no-open-port deny case that verifies no background wake occurs.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Test the timer lifecycle.
Add an automated contract test for multiple ports and profiles, the last-port-close transition, and a one-off message that must not keep the timer running. The tests in native.rs do not exercise this timer.
As per path instructions: “Load-bearing behavior changes come with a test of the contract, including the deny or malformed-input path.”

Schedule the timer in the main run loop's common modes so a tracking menu
or modal sheet doesn't hold it past WebKit's idle limit, note the safety of
each Objective-C call, and test which connections keep a background awake.

Add a committed timer-lifecycle test.
The current test covers only awake selection. A regression can still pass if an open port does not tick and load its background, or if the timer remains active after the last port closes. Add coverage for both lifecycle paths. The manual idle run does not protect them from regression.

The existing open-port test only checks awake selection; extend
`open_ports_keep_one_background_awake_per_extension_and_profile` to verify that
an open port’s timer ticks and loads its background, and that the timer stops
after the last port closes.
