Summary

Completes v0.2 documentation for merged features: failure minimization and fork-at-step debugging. Updates README, CHANGELOG, and adds comprehensive fork-at-step documentation.

What's Included

New Documentation

docs/fork.md - Complete fork-at-step guide:

  • Overview and quick start examples
  • Fork points (by step or event ID)
  • Override system (Python API only)
  • CLI and Python API reference
  • Use cases and complete examples
  • Provenance tracking and trace integrity
  • Error handling and best practices
  • Documented limitations

Updated Documentation

README.md:

  • Updated Key Capabilities to include minimize and fork
  • Updated v0.2 roadmap to show fork-at-step as implemented (not planned)
  • Added documentation links

CHANGELOG.md:

  • Expanded v0.2 section with complete fork-at-step details
  • Added fork features, API, and limitations
  • Updated description to mention both minimize and fork

Implementation Status

✅ Merged and Documented

  1. Failure Minimization (PR feat: add failure minimization via delta debugging #11)

    • CLI: stepfork minimize
    • Python API: stepfork.minimize
    • Documentation: docs/minimize.md
    • Tests: 44 minimize-specific tests
  2. Fork-at-Step (PR feat: add foundational fork-at-step trace support #12)

    • CLI: stepfork fork --at-step N or --at-event ID
    • Python API: stepfork.fork module
    • Documentation: docs/fork.md (NEW)
    • Tests: 43 fork-specific tests

📋 Documented Limitations

Fork-at-Step:

  • ❌ CLI does not support overrides (Python API only)
  • ❌ Does not automatically continue execution from fork point
  • ❌ Replay integration not yet implemented (requires separate replay call)
  • ❌ No automatic divergence detection for forked traces
  • ❌ Cannot override inputs (only outputs: tool_result, llm_response)

These limitations are clearly documented in:

  • docs/fork.md Limitations section
  • CHANGELOG.md v0.2 Limitations section
  • Inline in code examples showing the workaround

Quality Verification

✅ 523 tests pass (44 minimize + 43 fork + 436 existing)
✅ mypy --strict passes (56 source files)
✅ ruff check passes
✅ ruff format passes (109 files)

Files Changed

  • README.md - Updated roadmap and key capabilities
  • CHANGELOG.md - Expanded v0.2 section
  • docs/fork.md - New comprehensive documentation (580+ lines)

Verification Steps

# All tests pass
uv run pytest tests/ -q
# 523 passed

# Type safety verified
uv run mypy src/stepfork/ --strict
# Success: no issues found

# Code quality verified
uv run ruff check src/ tests/
uv run ruff format --check src/ tests/
# All checks passed

What's Next (Future Work)

The following features are documented as limitations and could be addressed in future PRs:

  1. Replay Integration with Overrides - Seamless fork → replay workflow
  2. Divergence Detection - Track when replays diverge from forked traces
  3. CLI Override Support - Add --override flags to fork command
  4. End-to-End Tests - record → fork → override → replay workflows

These are intentionally deferred to keep this PR focused on documentation completion.

Readiness for v0.2

This PR completes the v0.2 documentation. The current state:

Ready to Release

  • ✅ Failure minimization (fully implemented and documented)
  • ✅ Fork-at-step core functionality (implemented and documented)
  • ✅ All features tested and type-safe
  • ✅ Limitations clearly documented

Not in v0.2 (Future Work)

  • ❌ Replay integration with fork overrides
  • ❌ Baselines (roadmap item)
  • ❌ CLI override support

v0.2 can be released with the current implementation. Replay integration can be v0.3 or a v0.2.1 enhancement.
