onError() retries by forwarding context.options, so the next attempt received the signal of the previous one. When that attempt had timed out, the signal was already aborted and the retried fetch rejected before making a request, which is why retry appeared to do nothing with timeout set. Even without a timeout, all attempts shared the deadline of the first one.
The signal is now derived per attempt in $fetchRaw and kept out of context.options, so:
every attempt gets its own timeout window;
a caller-provided signal is still combined with it through AbortSignal.any();
records forwarded to retries no longer carry a stale signal.

I have linked an issue (Closes #637)
I have followed the repository code style (pnpm lint passes)
I have added a test that fails without the fix and passes with it
The new retrying after a timeout test serves a request that only answers after 5s on the first hit, then succeeds. With { timeout: 100, retry: 1 } it asserts the server saw 2 requests and the retry resolved — on the previous code the server saw 1 request and the call failed.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Requests configured with a timeout can now retry successfully after an attempt times out. Each retry gets a fresh timeout, while any cancellation signal supplied with the request remains in effect.
Added coverage for a request that times out once and then succeeds on retry.
`timeout` used to be converted into an `AbortSignal` stored on the options
object, which the retry logic then forwards to the next attempt. After a
timed out attempt the signal is already aborted, so every retry aborted
before a request was made — and, even when it was not, all attempts shared
a single deadline.
The signal is now derived per attempt and kept out of the options object,
so each retry gets a fresh timeout while a caller-provided signal is still
honored.
Closesunjs#637
Timed fetch attempts now use separate fetch options, so a timeout signal from one attempt does not replace the caller’s signal for retries. A test verifies that a request succeeds on its second attempt after the first attempt times out.
Changes: Timeout retry behavior
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Create fetch options per attempt src/fetch.ts, test/index.test.ts
$fetchRaw creates separate fetch options and a timeout signal for each attempt. The test server delays the first /timeout-once request and returns "ok" on the next. The test expects "ok" after two requests.
Requests that time out while receiving a response body still fail instead of retrying. Address this remaining timeout case before merging unless its limited scope is explicitly accepted.

Explanation
The title "fix: apply the timeout signal per attempt" matches the main change. The raw summary shows $fetchRaw in src/fetch.ts now builds a separate fetchOptions object per attempt, combining a fresh timeout signal with the caller's signal, so retries no longer reuse an aborted signal. The PR objectives confirm the same intent, which fixes issue #637 (a timed-out first attempt blocking retries). The title is specific, concise, and follows the conventional commit style. Test coverage for the retry-after-timeout case is also present.

Explanation
Issue #637 requires retries after a timeout. src/fetch.ts now creates fetchOptions for each $fetchRaw attempt. It derives a new AbortSignal.timeout() without changing context.options.signal. onError() forwards context.options to the retry, so the retry derives a new timeout signal. The reported test uses { timeout: 100, retry: 1 } and verifies two requests and a successful result.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes are limited to timeout signal handling in src/fetch.ts and a regression test for retry behavior after a timeout. The caller signal remains combined through AbortSignal.any(). These changes directly support issue #637.

Retry timeouts that occur while reading the response body.
If the first attempt receives headers before the timeout but stalls while reading the body, the timeout rejects response.text() or another body read. Those reads occur after this catch, so the request fails without a retry. The Fetch Standard permits an abort to error a response body after fetch() has resolved. Route timeout failures from body reads through retry handling, and account for the response’s successful status when deciding whether to retry. (fetch.spec.whatwg.org)

On the outside-diff finding about body-read timeouts: that is a separate bug (#620), not something this change introduces or fixes. Routing body-read failures through onError() needs its own handling — the response already has a successful status at that point, so the retry decision has to ignore response.status — and I would rather keep this PR scoped to #637 so it stays reviewable. Happy to follow up with a separate PR for #620 if that is preferred.
