Problem

detectResponseType matches XML media types against a fixed set of strings:

const textTypes = new Set([
  "image/svg",
  "application/xml",
  "application/xhtml",
  "application/html",
]);

The lookup is exact, so every media type using the structured +xml suffix (RFC 6839) falls through to blob — including the real-world spellings of two entries already in that set, image/svg+xml and application/xhtml+xml:

application/rss+xml    -> blob     application/ld+json   -> json
application/atom+xml   -> blob     application/xml       -> text
application/xhtml+xml  -> blob     text/xml              -> text
image/svg+xml          -> blob

The +json suffix is already handled by JSON_RE, which is why application/ld+json is detected correctly.

Change

Mirrors JSON_RE with an equivalent pattern for XML, so +xml types are treated as text, and adds a regression test covering the content types above.

Closes #597

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • XML responses, including application- and image-based XML media types with optional suffixes and parameters, are now returned as text.
    • This improves handling of RSS and other XML-based responses across supported content types.

`detectResponseType` matched XML media types against a fixed set of
strings, so types using the structured `+xml` suffix fell through to
`blob`: `application/rss+xml`, `application/atom+xml`,
`application/xhtml+xml` and `image/svg+xml`.

The `+json` suffix is already handled the same way by `JSON_RE`, so this
mirrors it with an equivalent pattern for XML.

📝 Walkthrough

detectResponseType now treats matching XML media types as text. Tests cover XML, RSS, Atom, XHTML, and SVG content types, including an RSS type with a charset parameter.

Changes: XML response handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Detect XML responses as text
src/utils.ts, test/index.test.ts
detectResponseType returns "text" for matching XML media types. The test server accepts a supplied content type, and tests verify that $fetch returns the response as text.

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Low

Suggested reviewers: pi0

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to c7861

The XML response detection change matches the stated behavior without an established merge-blocking risk.

Security architecture risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to be8a5

The change adjusts default response decoding without adding XML parsing or execution. Explicit response-handling options retain precedence, and the inspected flow shows no introduced or worsened security risk.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A server able to control a fetched response's headers and body can influence the default returned representation for newly matched XML types. The affected surface includes public fetch instances using automatic detection; no additional network request, credential authority or cross-tenant state access is introduced by the classifier change. External application handling of the resulting string is outside the inspected scope.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Untrusted response metadata selects among fixed classifier outcomes, not arbitrary response methods. Caller-specified handling takes precedence over metadata detection, and the existing HEAD and null-body-status exclusions remain in place.

Explanation

Issue #597 requires application/rss+xml responses to be detected as text. src/utils.ts adds XML_RE and checks it in detectResponseType, which matches application/rss+xml and returns "text". The supplied change summary reports regression coverage for XML media types and parameterized RSS XML.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain within issue #597. The implementation generalizes detection for media types with the +xml suffix, and the test endpoint and regression tests support that response-type objective. No unrelated change is shown.
