Problem / Feature

The AppImage built by the release pipeline embeds the old, dynamically linked
AppImage runtime that ships with linuxdeploy's bundled appimagetool. As a
result the AppImage needs the host's C library and libfuse2 to mount itself,
and the AppImageHub test reports:

not self-contained: uses the C library of the system; uses an old AppImage
runtime that needs the C library (and libfuse2) of the system; references
glibc 2.16

This is the remaining compatibility warning on the catalog PR
(AppImage/appimage.github.io#5206); the test itself already passes.

Changes

  • Dockerfile.AppImageBuilder.Linux — download the current statically linked
type2-runtime and set LDAI_RUNTIME_FILE so linuxdeploy's AppImage plugin
    passes it to appimagetool --runtime-file.
  • Makefile — pass RUNTIME_ARCH=x86_64 through to the builder image.

The runtime is now static-pie (no interpreter, no NEEDED), so
X-AppImage-Runtime becomes static and the "old AppImage runtime" clause
disappears. The payload still uses the host's C library, so the line becomes
not self-contained: uses the C library of the system; references glibc 2.16.
Bundling libc is a larger, riskier change and is out of scope here.

Verification

  • docker build -f Dockerfile.AppImageBuilder.Linux ... --build-arg runtime_arch=x86_64
builds cleanly with the new download step.
  • Verified the type2-runtime asset is static-pie linked and that the bundled
    appimagetool accepts --runtime-file.
  • Full AppImage build not run locally (macOS Docker Desktop amd64 emulation
cannot execute AppImages); CI covers this.
  • The AppImage is produced at release time, so a new release is needed before
the AppImageHub PR can be re-tested with /retest.

    CONTRIBUTING.md).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Build Improvements
    • Linux AppImage builds now include the matching type-2 runtime, with x86_64 selected by default.
    • The build can select a different runtime architecture, helping ensure the packaged AppImage uses the appropriate runtime for its target.

linuxdeploy's bundled appimagetool embeds an old dynamically linked AppImage
runtime, so the produced AppImage needs the host's C library and libfuse2 to
mount itself (AppImageHub reports 'uses an old AppImage runtime that needs the
C library (and libfuse2) of the system').

Download the current statically linked type2-runtime and pass it to
linuxdeploy's AppImage plugin via LDAI_RUNTIME_FILE so the AppImage runtime is
static.

📝 Walkthrough

The Linux AppImage build now passes a runtime architecture to Docker. The Dockerfile downloads the matching type-2 runtime, makes it executable, and sets LDAI_RUNTIME_FILE for linuxdeploy.

Changes: Linux AppImage Runtime

Layer / File(s) Summary
Runtime selection and build wiring
Dockerfile.AppImageBuilder.Linux, Makefile
The Dockerfile accepts runtime_arch, downloads the matching runtime, makes it executable, and sets LDAI_RUNTIME_FILE. The x64 Makefile target passes x86_64 to the Docker build.

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to c09a0

A tampered runtime asset could execute code when users launch the AppImage. Signature verification would reduce this supply-chain risk; merging without it warrants owner awareness.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to c09a0

The packaging change is narrow and keeps the existing execution privileges and supported architecture. However, it introduces a separately downloaded runtime without verifying its identity before use. Compromise of that upstream release asset could therefore affect newly built AppImages and users who execute them.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · inferred: The newly downloaded runtime crosses from a mutable upstream release into the distributed executable without an explicit checksum, signature, or provenance check in the builder. Replacement of that asset could place attacker-controlled native code in subsequently built AppImages.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A substituted runtime could affect every AppImage produced from the affected downloaded or cached input. When those AppImages are executed, malicious runtime code would operate with the invoking user's authority. The evidence does not establish automatic privilege escalation or access to release credentials.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The two retained findings support one architecture-level attack path: control over the upstream runtime asset or trusted download path permits replacement of the file supplied for embedding. Ordinary application users do not control this input through the checked-in packaging target. The independently acquired runtime makes this an introduced dependency exposure despite the older unverified linuxdeploy download.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The download uses HTTPS with CA certificates installed, but the acquisition step performs only curl followed by chmod. It does not compare a digest or verify a signature. Output checksum generation hashes files in dist and therefore does not authenticate this upstream input. The external consumer implementation was unavailable for independent verification of additional controls.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — A nonzero curl exit stops the chained download step, and the Makefile does not ignore Docker build or packaging failures. However, curl lacks HTTP-status failure handling, and chmod does not establish valid runtime contents. Whether malformed or mismatched input is rejected before embedding remains dependent on the external tools. Concurrent builds also retain the preexisting shared image tag and dist output location.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Bind the runtime to an approved content digest or verify its detached signature against an independently pinned trusted key before use. Record the selected runtime identity with release inputs so rebuilds and rollback can recover the same bytes. Fail acquisition on HTTP errors and validate the expected runtime architecture before packaging.
