Summary

  • serde-saphyr 2.1 refuses YAML null where a struct is expected, and a document without any node (empty, only comments, a bare ---) reads as null: every config reader refused a file with nothing set yet (unexpected end of input at line 1, column 1).
  • The shared reader tries the target type first and, only when the type refuses a document that holds no node, reads it from an empty mapping. A document with content reads as before; an explicit null/~ keeps its meaning (an optional reads it as absent, an untyped value as null).
  • serde-saphyr requirement 2.1.

Testing

  • cargo nextest run --all-features: 953 passed.
  • an_empty_document_is_the_default_config failed on serde-saphyr 2.1.0 before the change; an_explicit_null_document_keeps_its_meaning and an_empty_document_keeps_an_optional_absent failed with the first fallback.
  • clippy -D warnings and fmt clean.

Closes #165

- serde-saphyr 2.1 refuses YAML null where a struct is expected, and a
document without content (empty, only comments, a bare `---`) is null:
every config reader refused a file with nothing set yet
- the shared reader reads the document as an optional value and an
absent one as an empty mapping; a document with content reads as before
- serde-saphyr requirement 2.1; `an_empty_document_is_the_default_config`
failed on 2.1.0 before the change

Closes #165

Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • YAML documents containing null are now handled as empty configuration, making their behavior consistent with an empty YAML mapping.
    • Non-null YAML documents continue to be parsed as before, preserving existing behavior for configurations with values.

The shared YAML reader now treats a null document as an empty mapping. The serde-saphyr minimum version changes from 2.0 to 2.1.

Changes: YAML config parsing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Handle null YAML documents
src/config.rs, Cargo.toml
parse_yaml now deserializes documents as Option<T> and parses {} when the document is null. Non-null documents use the existing deserialization path, moved to parse_yaml_document. The serde-saphyr minimum version changes to 2.1; its feature settings remain unchanged.

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 997fa

Empty configurations gain the intended default behavior, but explicit null values also change meaning. The compatibility risk is bounded; preserve explicit-null behavior or explicitly accept that change before merging.

Explanation

The changes stay within #165. The serde-saphyr 2.1 requirement and the shared YAML reader update directly implement the issue. The comment update documents the same behavior. No unrelated product behavior or public API changes appear in the reviewed diff.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 1 functions across 1 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description directly explains the serde-saphyr 2.1 update and the empty-document handling changes in src/config.rs. It also describes expected behavior for explicit null values and optional values.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The implementation matches #165: parse_yaml reads Option<T>, maps None to {}, and keeps content parsing and key-path error handling in parse_yaml_document. The dependency is set to serde-saphyr 2.1. The reviewed evidence does not include post-change test results or CI status for main and the open Dependabot PR. Therefore, the automated-test and CI acceptance requirement cannot be confirmed.

Resolution

Provide the post-change test results, including config::tests::an_empty_document_is_the_default_config, and the required CI status for main and the open Dependabot PR.

[Medium impact] The PR appears safe to merge; no actionable issues remain.

Summary

Makes empty YAML files load with the default settings while preserving explicit null values.

  • Empty YAML documents now load as defaults without changing explicit null.

Both earlier, unnumbered findings are addressed by the current code. Successful reads are preserved, and empty-looking input must pass the reader's checks before the fallback applies. No new actionable issues were found. Tests were inspected but not run.

- the reader tries the target type first and falls back to an empty
mapping only when the type refuses a document that holds no node, so an
optional reads `null` and an empty document as absent and an untyped
  value reads `null` as null
- tests: an explicit null keeps its meaning, an empty document keeps an
optional absent (both failed with the earlier fallback)

- the empty-mapping reading also accepted text that only looked empty:
two documents (`---\n---\n`) or a broken directive (`%YAML\n---\n`)
became the default config instead of an error
- it now needs the reader to accept the input as one document holding
nothing, besides the text holding no explicit `null`
- test: a malformed empty-looking document is refused (failed before)
