Summary

The manual-resolution route ran the evaluator suite and merge protection against a diff built from one clone of the project, then called resolveConflict, which cloned again and committed onto whatever tip that second clone saw. The two clones were independent, and nothing detected a project that moved in between:

  1. buildManualResolutionDiff resolves the tip as A and builds the diff against it.
  2. The evaluator suite and merge protection pass on that diff.
  3. Another push lands on the default branch. The tip is now B.
  4. resolveConflict clones, sees B, and commits the resolution on top of it.

The landed content was never evaluated, and nothing errored — the commit applies cleanly because the second clone's HEAD is the new tip. Two consequences beyond the unevaluated merge itself: the webhook receiver was told baseSha: A and ran its suite against A, and manualResolutionAudit.evaluatedBaseSha recorded A as the evaluated base for a commit whose parent is B — a provenance record that is confidently wrong.

resolveConflict now accepts expectedBaseSha and fails closed with STALE_PROJECT (409) when its clone is not at it. This is the pinning the merge path already applies with expectedWorkspaceSha, from the other side: there the workspace must not have moved, here the project must not have.

Three details worth the reviewer's attention:

  • The guard asserts both HEAD and the branch ref. HEAD is the parent git.commit records; the branch ref is what git.push advances. A cloneRepo with ref: branch leaves them equal, so today this is one assertion made twice — but it is the invariant the pin needs, and stating it means a later change to how the clone checks out cannot quietly narrow the guarantee to whichever ref still matches.
  • An unresolvable tip is an error, not a pass. "We could not tell" must never read as "it matches."
  • The route passes the value straight from the audit record it is about to write, so the pinned sha and the audited sha cannot disagree. evaluatedBaseSha is now a statement about the commit's actual parent rather than a note about what an earlier clone happened to see.

409 is passed through rather than flattened into the route's existing 422: the payload was not invalid, the project moved, and the caller's remedy is to re-resolve — a different remedy deserves a different status.

Scoped to manual, the one strategy that introduces content no evaluator has ever seen and therefore the only one the route gates. accept-project and accept-workspace re-stage content already committed on one side of the conflict; they are not evaluated and take no pin.

How was this verified?

  • npm run typecheck
  • npm test — 3775 passed, 28 skipped, 217 files
  • npm run lint

tests/resolve-conflict-base-pinning.test.ts exercises the real git logic over MemoryFS with only the network legs stubbed — git.clone builds a scripted project history with deterministic oids, git.push records what would have been pushed. Same harness shape as tests/fastpath-sha-pinning.test.ts, which covers the equivalent pin on the merge path (#124). Four cases: a resolution still at its base commits and pushes; one whose base moved is refused with nothing pushed; an unpinned call behaves exactly as before; an unresolvable tip fails closed.

Every test was checked against the defect rather than merely observed passing:

  • Neutering the pin fails the moved-base and unresolvable-tip tests (the resolution commits onto the newer tip and succeeds, which is the bug).
  • Reverting the route wiring fails both route tests.
  • The accept-project test passes either way by design — it guards against the pin being applied where it should not be.

Checklist

  • Tests added or updated for the change (coverage thresholds still pass)
  • A changelog.d/<slug>.md fragment added if this is user-visible
  • Public docs updated — the OpenAPI spec documents the 409 and what manual is gated on; docs/api/errors.md lists STALE_PROJECT beside STALE_WORKSPACE; mirrors regenerated and check:guides passes
  • No secrets, tokens, or personal data committed
  • The web UI change (if any) stays server-rendered with no client-side JavaScript — no UI change

  • Bug Fixes

    • Manual conflict resolutions are committed only against the evaluated project revision.
    • Changes to the project during evaluation, or push-time races, now return 409 STALE_PROJECT without creating a commit.
    • Git and authentication failures now return the appropriate API error responses.
    • accept-project and accept-workspace behavior remains unchanged.
  • Documentation

    • Documented STALE_PROJECT, GIT_ERROR, and AUTH_ERROR responses and retry requirements.

The manual-resolution route ran the evaluator suite and merge protection
against a diff built from one clone of the project, then called resolveConflict,
which cloned again and committed onto whatever tip that second clone saw. The
two clones were independent: a push landing on the default branch in between
moved the base, and because the second clone's HEAD *is* the new tip, the
resolution committed cleanly on top of content no evaluator had seen. Nothing
errored, and `manualResolutionAudit.evaluatedBaseSha` recorded the evaluated
revision as the parent of a commit that had a different one.

resolveConflict now takes `expectedBaseSha` and refuses with STALE_PROJECT
(409) when the clone is not at it — the same pinning the merge path applies
with expectedWorkspaceSha, from the other side: there the workspace must not
have moved, here the project must not have. The guard asserts both HEAD (the
parent git.commit records) and the branch ref (what git.push advances); a
cloneRepo with `ref: branch` leaves them equal today, but the pin needs both,
and an unresolvable tip is an error rather than a pass.

The route passes the value straight from the audit record it is about to write,
so the pinned sha and the audited sha cannot disagree — `evaluatedBaseSha` is
now a statement about the commit's actual parent. 409 is passed through rather
than flattened into the route's 422: the payload was not invalid, the project
moved, and the remedy is to re-resolve.

Scoped to `manual`, the one strategy that introduces content no evaluator has
seen and therefore the only one that is gated. accept-project and
accept-workspace re-stage content already committed on one side of the
conflict; they are not evaluated and take no pin.

Tests exercise the real git logic over MemoryFS with only the network legs
stubbed, mirroring tests/fastpath-sha-pinning.test.ts (the equivalent pin on
the merge path, #124): a resolution still at its base commits and pushes, one
whose base moved is refused with nothing pushed, an unpinned call is unchanged,
and an unresolvable tip fails closed. Both route tests fail without the wiring,
and both git-level tests fail without the guard. Documented in the OpenAPI
spec's 409 response and the error-code reference.

Vacuous assertion

In the "refuses with 409 STALE_PROJECT" test, expect(newer).toBeDefined() can never fail: newer is the second oid returned by precomputeOids(2), which always yields exactly two oids regardless of what resolveConflict did. The comment above it claims to verify "the unevaluated commit is still the tip; nothing was layered on top of it", but the assertion never inspects the cloned repo, so it gives false confidence that the tip was checked. Either remove the assertion (the state.pushes length and error-code checks already cover the behavior) or make it a real check, e.g. capture the fs/dir handed to the mocked git.clone and resolve the branch ref after the failed call. Test-only, low severity.

// The unevaluated commit is still the tip; nothing was layered on top of it.
expect(newer).toBeDefined();

Comment thread src/routes/sync-management.ts Outdated
Review on #374 caught that the base pin introduced a 500-class error into a
route that flattened every status but 401 and 409 into 422. An unresolvable
project tip — the pin's fail-closed case — therefore told the caller their
payload was malformed when it was fine, and there is no outer middleware that
corrects it.

The route now preserves the error's own status wherever it can represent it:
401, 409 (STALE_PROJECT), 502 verbatim, any other 5xx as 500. That also covers
pre-existing infrastructure failures on this path which were being reported the
same wrong way — an FS write that failed, a push the remote rejected. 422 stays
the default and still covers every validation failure: traversal, oversize file,
empty resolutions, a resolution that would not apply.

The new test fails against the old mapping. Documented as a 500 response on the
endpoint in the OpenAPI spec.

Map pinned manual non-fast-forward pushes to STALE_PROJECT

If the remote branch advances after assertExpectedBase checks the clone, git.push uses force: false and rejects the commit as PushRejectedNonFastForward. commitAndPush wraps that cause as EXTERNAL_SERVICE_ERROR/502, and mapPushError preserves it. When opts.expectedBaseSha is set and the cause is specifically PushRejectedNonFastForward, return STALE_PROJECT/409. Preserve 502 handling for unrelated push failures.

Review on #374 caught that the pin's residual race reported the wrong status. I
had noted on #337 that a project moving between the pin check and the push is
caught by the non-fast-forward rejection, and left it there. It does fail closed
— the commit's parent is the evaluated base, so the remote refuses it and
nothing lands — but `commitAndPush` wraps that rejection as an
ExternalServiceError, so the caller got a 502 reading "the remote is broken, try
again" for a condition whose actual remedy is to re-resolve.

When the caller pinned a base, a push rejected as `not-fast-forward` now maps to
the same STALE_PROJECT (409) the pin itself raises: it is the same condition
detected one step later. Without a pin there is no claim about what the base
should have been, so the 502 stands. `tag-exists`, PushRejectedError's other
reason, is deliberately not matched — it says nothing about the base — and
neither is any other push failure.

Detection reads the wrapped cause's `code`/`data.reason` with a message
fallback, and the tests throw isomorphic-git's own PushRejectedError so the
mapping is exercised against the real shape rather than a lookalike. Three
cases: a pinned rejection reports 409 with nothing pushed, an unpinned one still
reports 502, and `tag-exists` or an unrelated failure keeps its own status.

Also from the same review: docs/api/errors.md said the GIT_ERROR family appears
only as an import-job category and "not as a `code` on a request you made",
which this PR made false by surfacing GIT_ERROR/500 from the resolve route. Both
names that double as response codes are now documented as such, with the
endpoint that returns them.

Both outside-diff findings from the latest review were valid and are fixed in b914ec3. Answering here since neither could be posted as an inline thread.

src/storage/git-ops.ts — a pinned non-fast-forward push should be STALE_PROJECT. Correct, and it lands on something I explicitly noted on #337 and then misjudged. I wrote that a project moving between the pin check and the push is "caught by the non-fast-forward push rather than silently reparented" and stopped there. It does fail closed — the commit's parent is the evaluated base, so the remote refuses it and nothing lands — but commitAndPush wraps that rejection as an ExternalServiceError, so the caller got a 502 that reads "the remote is broken, try again" for a condition whose actual remedy is to re-resolve. Failing closed was never the gap; the status was.

When a base was pinned, a push rejected as not-fast-forward now maps to the same STALE_PROJECT (409) the pin itself raises — the same condition, detected one step later. Deliberately narrow:

  • No pin, no mapping. Without an expected base there is no claim about what the base should have been, so the 502 stands.
  • tag-exists, PushRejectedError's other reason, is not matched — it says nothing about the base — and neither is any other push failure.
  • Detection reads the wrapped cause's code and data.reason, with a message fallback for a cause that arrived as a plain Error.

The tests throw isomorphic-git's own PushRejectedError rather than a hand-rolled lookalike, so the mapping is exercised against the real shape. Three cases: a pinned rejection reports 409 with nothing pushed; an unpinned one still reports 502; tag-exists and an unrelated failure keep their own status. Forcing the pin flag to false fails the first.

docs/api/errors.md — GIT_ERROR as a response code. Also right, and it was this PR that made the page wrong: it said those names appear "not as a code on a request you made", which stopped being true the moment the resolve route started returning GIT_ERROR/500. Both names that double as response codes are now documented as such with the endpoint that returns them, and the paragraph still says the categories are not responses. The 409's OpenAPI description now covers the push-time race alongside the pre-commit check, and the changelog fragment says so too.

Gates on the new head: typecheck, lint, release:check and check:guides clean; 3779 passing, 28 skipped.

Comment thread src/storage/git-ops.ts Outdated
Review on #374: the message-regex fallback I put behind the structured
PushRejectedError check earns nothing and can misfire. Checked before removing
it — git.push raises that class for every real non-fast-forward, and
resolveConflict runs in the same isolate as its caller, so the cause arrives
with `code` and `data` intact. The regex therefore covered no production path,
while an unrelated push failure whose text mentions fast-forwards (a proxy or a
server hook echoing git's wording) would have been classified as STALE_PROJECT,
telling the caller to re-resolve over something re-resolving cannot fix.

The asymmetry decides it: missing a rejection degrades to the 502 the call would
have returned anyway, which is safe; a false stale-base verdict sends someone to
redo work for the wrong reason.

A new test throws a plain Error carrying the library's exact wording and asserts
it stays EXTERNAL_SERVICE_ERROR/502 with nothing pushed — it fails against the
regex version, so the distinction is pinned rather than assumed.
