What and why

A single pattern fill tiles at most 250,000 times (PatternDef::offsets_covering), but Scene::fill writes each tile's own nested pattern fills down to the nesting depth limit of 8 with no cumulative bound.

When a pattern's tile artwork is filled with another pattern (or self-referencing), the tile count multiplies at each nesting level. An input file under 1 KB can trigger millions of tile expansions, causing EMF export (the engine's emf format, reachable via CLI, MCP, and the control channel) to exhaust system memory or hang indefinitely, losing unsaved user work.

The scene now tracks a shared budget of 250,000 pattern tiles across the full traversal (tiles_left). Any pattern fill requested after exhausting the budget is written as a solid fallback colour (matching WMF pattern behaviour) accompanied by a descriptive warning.

How it was tested

Added unit test patterns_inside_pattern_tiles_share_one_tile_budget:

  • Tests squares filled with a repeating dot pattern (~3,700 tiles x ~140 dot tiles = over 500,000 fills unconstrained). Verifies operations remain bounded (< 300,000 ops) and emits the fallback warning.
  • Tests self-referential pattern nesting down to the nesting limit, verifying operations stay strictly within the budget.
  • All vectorcraft_metafile tests pass cleanly.

Checklist

  • cargo xtask ci passes (fmt, clippy, tests, assets, brands, layers, wasm).
  • No panics in shipped code: no unwrap(), expect(), panic!, unreachable!, todo! or unimplemented! outside tests, and no unchecked indexing on data from files, parameters or messages.
  • Clean-room: nothing copied from Adobe products or GPL/AGPL code.
  • Every new asset has a row in ASSETS.md.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Pattern rendering now enforces a maximum of 250,000 tiles per scene, helping prevent excessive processing.
    • When a pattern exceeds the rendering limit, it is displayed as a flat color instead of continuing to expand.
    • A warning is emitted when the tile budget is exceeded.
    • Recursive and nested patterns are now bounded to prevent runaway expansion while maintaining stable rendering behavior.

One pattern fill tiles at most 250,000 times (PatternDef::offsets_covering),
but Scene::fill writes each tile's own pattern fills again, down to the
nesting limit of 8, with nothing bounding the total. A pattern whose tile
art is filled with another pattern (or with itself) multiplies the tile
count at every level: a small document makes EMF export (the engine's
"emf" format, also reachable over MCP and the control channel) run out
of memory or never finish, and the unsaved document is lost with it.

The scene now keeps one tile budget for the whole walk. A fill whose
tiles don't fit in what is left, and every pattern fill after it, is
written as one colour like WMF writes patterns, with a warning.

The test tiles squares filled with dots (over half a million fills before)
and a pattern filled with itself, and checks both stay under the budget.

📝 Walkthrough

Scenes now limit total pattern-tile expansion to 250,000 tiles. When expansion exceeds the remaining budget, the scene emits a warning and uses a flat fill. Tests cover nested and self-referential patterns.

Changes: Pattern tile budget

Layer / File(s) Summary
Track and enforce the pattern tile budget
crates/metafile/src/scene.rs, crates/metafile/src/tests.rs
Scenes track remaining tile capacity and stop pattern expansion when the shared budget is exceeded. The fallback emits a flat fill and a warning. Tests check nested and self-referential pattern expansion bounds.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Suggested reviewers: bflatastic

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to dd799

Some patterns can disappear instead of receiving the intended flat fill, and over-budget exports can still construct substantial tile art before falling back. Correct these paths before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to dd799

The shared limit reduces runaway pattern expansion without adding export access or privileges. The change is contained within rendering, but limits pattern tiles rather than total memory or work across an entire export request.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The concrete production caller is engine document export. Its existing selected-artboard loop invokes metafile export separately, making the allowance per Scene/artboard rather than an aggregate document-export quota.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — Input-controlled nested or self-referential pattern artwork previously multiplied expansion across recursion levels. Reserving capacity before recursive traversal removes that cumulative multiplication beyond the Scene allowance. The inspected comparison does not establish a new or worsened attack path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The new control sits between document pattern expansion and emitted scene operations. It supplements the existing nesting limit without exposing the counter to callers or changing the public export boundary.

Assert tile expansion and the exact overflow warning.

The current assertions also pass when all patterns flatten immediately. Assert that operations contain a pattern-tile clip in addition to the initial scene clip, and assert the specific 250,000-tile warning.

Suggested assertions
     let (ops, warnings) = crate::scene::Scene::new(&d, d.artboards[0].rect, true).run();
     assert!(ops.len() < 300_000, "{} operations", ops.len());

+    assert!(ops.iter().filter(|op| matches!(op, crate::scene::Op::Clip { .. })).count() > 1, "pattern tiles were not expanded");
+    assert!(warnings.iter().any(|w| w == "pattern fills past 250,000 tiles in all are written as one colour"), "{warnings:?}");

Warn when the shared tile budget is already exhausted.

When a valid pattern reaches fill with tiles_left == 0, the current guard skips the pattern branch. The fallback emits only FLAT_PATTERNS, so the descriptive TOO_MANY_TILES warning is missing. Handle zero capacity before calling instances_in; this keeps the fix limited to the warning gap.

Distinguish an oversized grid from an empty pattern.

offsets_covering returns an empty vector when the grid exceeds 250,000 positions. instances_in passes that result through, so tiles.len() is zero and the budget fallback does not run. The exporter can therefore emit no pattern fill instead of the required flat-color fallback and warning. Return an explicit overflow result and use the flat-fill fallback for that result.

Check the budget before materializing tile art.

instances_in creates the complete transformed tile set before Line 309 checks tiles.len(). When few tiles remain, an over-budget pattern can still allocate and transform up to the full expansion before the exporter falls back to a solid fill. Add a bounded enumeration path that stops before constructing tiles beyond the remaining budget.

Preserve unused tiles after an over-budget fill.

If a fill needs more tiles than tiles_left, Line 310 sets the budget to zero without writing those tiles. A later fill that needs fewer than the previously remaining tiles then becomes flat too. Keep the remaining budget when this fill falls back, so later fills can use it.

Read the full diff at dd7991c. EMF export keeps one tile budget (250,000) across nested pattern fills; a fill past it, or any fill once the budget is spent, falls back to the flat colour with a warning, and the flat path is shared in flat_fill. The new test covers the nested case. FreeBSD build + test green at this head.
