Repeat: nested Repeats stop at 250,000 instances in all - #3223
Conversation
One Repeat makes at most 250,000 instances (a 500 x 500 grid; radial counts stop at 1,000), but its source may hold another Repeat and every instance draws that one again: expand() clones the inner Repeat once per instance, and the renderer, the exporters (expand_deep) and hit testing evaluate each copy. Nothing bounds the product, so a document under 1 KB with a 500 x 500 grid of a 500 x 500 grid asks for 62.5 billion instances: opening it freezes the app or runs it out of memory, and the unsaved work in other documents is lost with it. A Repeat now counts the instances the Repeats nested in its source make in all and keeps only as many of its own as fit in 250,000, the budget pattern fills already keep (at least one, so the source still shows). A Repeat with nothing nested keeps all its instances, as before. The test nests a 500 x 500 grid in a 500 x 500 grid and in a mirror, counts the instances from the transforms (62.5 billion before) and checks they stay within the budget, while one grid and a small nest keep all of theirs. Enforce the budget when nested Repeats already exceed it.
If an outer Repeat contains two sibling 500 × 500 Repeats, nested_instances returns 500,000. kept then returns one, so expansion still produces 500,000 nested instances. Distribute the budget to the nested Repeats instead of relying only on truncating the outer transforms. Add a sibling-Repeat case to the budget test.

Read the full diff at 03b2960. Repeat now counts the instances of Repeats nested in its source and keeps only as many transforms as fit one 250,000 budget (at least one), so a grid of grids can no longer expand to billions. instances_in_all and transforms agree, and the test checks that expand() matches transforms(). FreeBSD build + test green at this head.
What and why
A single
Repeatcreates at most 250,000 instances (a 500 × 500 grid; radial counts cap at 1,000), but its source may contain another nestedRepeat. When expanded,expand()clones the innerRepeatonce per outer instance, and rendering, export (expand_deep), and hit-testing evaluate each copy.Without a bound on the product of nested repeats, a tiny document (< 1 KB) specifying a 500 × 500 grid of another 500 × 500 grid demands 62.5 billion instances. Opening or rendering such a document stalls the application or triggers an out-of-memory abort, losing unsaved user work.
A
Repeatnow calculates the total instance multiplier of any nested Repeats within its source and bounds its own generated instances so the total product stays within 250,000 (the same budget enforced for pattern fills), ensuring at least 1 instance is kept so the source remains visible. Repeats with no nested repeats retain their full instance count. How it was tested
