Summary

While dragging a new linear or radial gradient vector on art, or dragging the gradient bar's end handle to change length and angle, show the same distance, angle and dX/dY readouts as the Measure tool when Preferences › General › Measurement Labels is on.

Plan

  • Track the live gradient vector on Grab::Art and Grab::End drags in GradientTool.
  • In overlays, when measurement_labels is on and the drag has begun, add an Overlay::Measure via xform::measure::measure.
  • Leave stop, midpoint, focal, aspect and rotate drags unchanged.
  • Add a unit test on an art drag and on an end-handle drag; verify the label is hidden when the preference is off.

Tests

  • cargo test -p vectorcraft-tools --lib gradient_drag_vector -j2 (new/updated tests in gradient.rs).

Part of gap G1

Status

Done on branch stream/vc-feat1-g1-gradient-drag-vector-measure (commit b9e4100). Tests: cargo test -p vectorcraft-tools --lib gradient -j2.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added measurement overlays while manipulating gradients, displaying distance, angle, and X/Y offsets.
    • Overlays appear only when measurement labels are enabled and the drag vector is nonzero.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for measurement labels on newly drawn and existing gradients, including when labels are disabled.

While drawing a new gradient or dragging the bar end handle, honor
Measurement Labels with the same D/angle/dX/dY readout as the Measure tool.

Review in Change Stack →

📝 Walkthrough

The gradient tool records the end-handle drag vector and displays distance, angle, and X/Y offset overlays when measurement labels are enabled. Tests cover enabled and disabled measurement states.

Changes: Gradient Measurements

Layer / File(s) Summary
Record and display drag measurements
crates/tools/src/xform/gradient.rs
The tool stores the end-handle drag vector and displays distance, angle, and offset labels for nonzero vectors during active drags. Tests cover new and existing gradients and verify suppression when labels are disabled.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 6248d

Gradient drags now show length and angle labels when Measurement Labels is enabled. The code works as intended, but it duplicates the label formatting from the Measure tool. Centralizing that formatting is a small follow-up, and the maintainer should also confirm the feature is wanted before merge.

Thanks @nrq6993-a11y. I'm not landing this as it stands. Illustrator's documentation describes Measurement Labels for drawing, selecting, moving and transforming, not for a Gradient tool drag, and we're matching Illustrator's documented behaviour. A link to a public source that shows the readout on gradient vectors would change that. If it does land later, please build the label with the shared helper from #2983 (segment_measure_label) rather than formatting it again here.

…rity).

Code-only review at ca5fbfb; no CI has run on this head yet.

This PR currently shows no changed files (0 additions, 0 deletions), so there is nothing to review. If the Gradient tool measurement labels were meant to be here, the commits may have been lost in a rebase or the branch may already match its base. Please push the change again, or close this PR if it is no longer needed.

Re-applies vector length/angle readouts while drawing or dragging the end handle, gated on Measurement Labels like other transform tools.

Centralize the segment measurement label formatting.

gradient.rs and measure.rs contain the same formatting. segment_measure_label does not exist on this branch, so add the helper to the measure module and use it from both call sites. Whether gradient drags should show measurement labels remains a separate product decision.

Reviewed the full diff: the Gradient tool's end-handle drag now records the gradient vector, and the length, angle and offset label shows while the gesture has begun and measurement labels are on; tests cover the label, labels off and the end-handle drag. FreeBSD build + test green at 6248d8e.

cargo xtask ci is incomplete or unchecked on this PR. Run it end to end (fmt, clippy, tests, assets, brands, layers, wasm), tick the checklist when green, and reply here with the outcome. That is required before any approve from here.
