Never crash: an oversize export size is an error, not a multiply overflow - #3015
An export (or CLI/MCP render) asked for an absurd size, e.g. a huge width/height from an agent or a typo, overflowed w * h and panicked instead of reporting an error.
Change
lightcraft_pipeline::check_output_size (with MAX_OUTPUT_SIDE = 65535 and MAX_OUTPUT_PIXELS = 2^30) rejects the box before anything is sized from it; Session::export_job calls it.
The GPU render computes w * h (and its 12-byte-per-pixel buffers) with checked_mul and fails with a Limit error.
Unrelated to #2635 (which caps lossy-JPEG decode sizes from their headers); this guards the output side.
Tests: new hostile-input test tests_export::huge_export_size_is_an_error (panicked before); cargo test -p lightcraft-engine --lib huge_export_size passes; cargo fmt and cargo clippy -p lightcraft-pipeline -p lightcraft-gpu -p lightcraft-engine --all-targets -D warnings clean.
…flow
render_export / export_job now refuse an output box past 65535 px per side or
2^30 pixels (lightcraft_pipeline::check_output_size) before anything is sized
from it, and the GPU render checks w*h (and its 12-byte buffers) with
checked_mul, failing with a Limit error instead of overflowing.

The pipeline now limits output dimensions and pixel count. Export setup validates dimensions before creating a job. GPU rendering checks pixel-count and buffer-size multiplication for overflow.
The pipeline defines maximum output dimensions and pixel count. Export setup validates dimensions before job creation. Tests cover oversized dimensions.
GPU size overflow checks crates/gpu/src/render.rs
GPU rendering checks pixel-count and byte-size multiplication. It reports a limit failure and returns None if either multiplication overflows.

Merge Risk: High · up to 5725d
Maximum-size renders can exhaust the process instead of returning an error; add a memory-safe output limit before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 5725d
The change rejects oversized requests earlier and contains GPU arithmetic failures without adding dependencies or privileges. No introduced security issue was established, but coverage of alternate rendering paths remains incomplete.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The changed control protects rendering-process availability from oversized dimensions. Dedicated MCP rendering clamps dimensions before calling the guarded entrypoint, and normal export preparation uses export_job. The inspected change does not expand authority or cross a new service boundary.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — No introduced attack path was established. Direct render-job construction remains unguarded, but it predates the PR, and CPU fallback was already reachable after GPU panics. External exposure of every alternate constructor remains unresolved rather than proven safe.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Caller-supplied output dimensions encounter a pure validation step before mutable job setup in the guarded engine APIs. GPU checked multiplication supplies a separate arithmetic control, not a universal admission policy for all rendering callers.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — The dimension limits are not an aggregate GPU or host-memory budget. Large permitted outputs can still reach substantial allocations. Those allocation paths and device-limit checks predate this PR; the comparison did not establish increased exposure.

render_job does not call check_output_size, so direct callers of render_now can pass a 70,000-pixel side before any shared limit check. The current MCP caller clamps size to 16,384, and the CLI render path uses export_photo, which validates through export_job. Therefore, the original CLI/MCP claim is too broad, but the public render_now boundary remains unguarded.

Review follow-up: the synchronous render_now path checks the output box with
check_output_size like export_job; the hostile-input test covers it.

Lower the shared output-pixel limit to prevent unbounded allocations.
check_output_size accepts a square 16,384 × 16,384 render because it has 268,435,456 pixels. When the GPU storage limit admits that output and the source uses the CPU sampling branch, Frame::sample allocates an Rgb32f of about 3 GiB. At 1 << 30 pixels, the GPU output/readback and RGB buffers can require about 4 GiB and 12 GiB respectively.
Image::new uses vec![...; width * height] and returns no error. These allocations can exhaust process memory instead of producing the intended render error. Enforce a memory-based output limit in check_output_size, shared by render_now and export_job, before rendering starts.

Lower MAX_OUTPUT_PIXELS to a memory-based limit that accounts for the aggregate
GPU output/readback and CPU RGB allocations, and keep check_output_size
enforcing it before rendering starts for both render_now and export_job.
The current dimensions all exceed MAX_OUTPUT_SIDE, so the assertions do not exercise MAX_OUTPUT_PIXELS. Add one case such as 33_000 × 33_000 through both entrypoints.

Re the Major note on MAX_OUTPUT_PIXELS: this PR stops the w * h overflow panic on absurd sizes. It isn't meant to be a memory budget. Large exports are legitimate: Lightroom itself allows up to 65,000 px per side and 512 MP. Whether a given size fits depends on the machine's RAM, so a fixed pixel cap can't settle that. Making Image::new and the CPU/GPU buffers allocate fallibly (try_reserve) is the real fix for the memory case, and it belongs in its own change. I'm leaving the limit as is here.
Size check:check_output_size caps an output box at 65,535 px per side and 2^30 pixels, using checked_mul, and returns an error string. It runs at the start of render_now and render_export, before anything is sized from the box.
GPU path:w * h in gpu::render becomes checked_mul, also requiring that n * 12 fits, and a failure reports FailKind::Limit and returns None like the other limit cases.
I looked at the callers I could find (the control channel and MCP render a square thumbnail from a requested size; the rest use fixed small sizes in tests), and none passes a value near the cap. The cap itself is a behaviour change: a 70,000 px side is now refused, which fits JPEG's limit and is the PR's stated intent. The test covers a huge box, an over-wide and an over-tall box for both entry points. I found no defect. The gate is green at this head. I did not run it.
