Off main. Part 1 of 2: the model a new photo right-click menu is built from, with no caller yet; part 2, #3026 (stacked on this one), draws it in the grid, the filmstrip, the loupe and Compare / Survey in place of today's menu.

Problem

Right-clicking a photo opens a hand-built list in crates/ui-egui/src/panels/grid.rs that grew one feature at a time. One group holds 12 unrelated actions (rating, albums, file moves, versions, stacks). The rows show no keyboard shortcuts and no check mark on the photo's current rating, flag or label, and their labels ignore the selection ("Delete Photo" with three photos selected). Most rows drop their command's error, so a Rename or Rotate that fails does nothing on screen. Actions people reach for right after rating aren't there although the commands exist: copy and paste metadata, metadata presets, Sync Settings, Auto Settings, presets, Add to Target Album, Open in Compare / Survey, Duplicate, Convert to DNG, flip, Edit Capture Time.

Change

  • New crates/ui-egui/src/photo_menu.rs: photo_menu::nodes(app, photo) builds the rows for a right-clicked photo from the menu bar's model (menubar::menu_bar), so every row has the Photo menu's label ("Delete 3 Photos"), shortcut, check mark and enabled state. Rows are grouped by task: open the photo; rate, flag, label and describe it (Add Keywords, a Metadata submenu); organize it (Add to Target Album, Add to Album, Stack, Find Similar Photos); edit it (an Edit Settings submenu with copy / paste / sync / auto / Apply Preset by group, then virtual copy, version, Photo Merge and a Rotate & Flip submenu); its file; where it is; export; and Delete on its own at the end.
  • Rows that don't apply are left out: no Open in Detail in Detail, Open in Compare / Survey only with several photos, Remove from Album and Set as Album Cover only inside an album, Locate Missing File… only for an original known to be gone, Add to My Photos only for a Local photo. The rating, flag and label rows are checked by the right-clicked photo's values (also when it isn't the active one of a selection), and in Compare and Survey they name that photo. Find Similar, Show in Folders and Set as Reference ask for the right-clicked photo. Apply Preset lists the groups in the Presets panel's order (Favorites first, then by name).
  • photo_menu::disabled_reason says why an off row is off ("Select 2 or more photos", "Copy edit settings first", "This photo has no file on disk").
  • New UI command photo.copyPath (Copy File Path) puts the selected photos' paths on the clipboard, one per line and each once (a virtual copy shares its original's file), and says how many. Until part 2 it is reachable from the control channel, MCP and Settings ▸ Keyboard Shortcuts (like every UI command), not from a menu.
  • menubar::item, node and tidy are crate-visible for the model; display_item_label leaves preset.apply rows' names alone (they are the user's, or already translated).
  • 16 new strings, in all 17 catalogs.

Not in this PR: drawing the menu (part 2: the grid, filmstrip, loupe and Compare / Survey callers, the shared row drawing with hover reasons and errors, removing the old menu, the headless tests, the parity rows and What's New). Nothing on screen changes here.

How it was checked

  • cargo xtask ci passes on this branch, rebased on current main

  • A test that fails without this change

  • User-visible change: ran the app and looked at the result

  • cargo xtask ci here (macOS) at this head, rebased on main 387bed1: clippy, fmt, tests, parity, layers, assets and wasm pass except two tests this change doesn't reach: accessibility::every_interactive_node_has_a_name_in_every_view_and_tool, which fails on main too (issue U+25B8 "▸" has no glyph in Inter and renders as a box in UI strings #1950, fixed by LR-BEHAV-LOCALIZE: menu paths with →, not the ▸ no UI font has (#1950) #2016), and tests_slideshow::a_manual_slideshow_waits_for_the_arrow_keys (LRC-SS-PLAYBACK: a manual slideshow waits for the arrow keys #2786), which failed once under load ("moved before its press") and passes alone; 120 runs beside busy loops failed 3 times (the Settings checkbox it clicks moved, or its click didn't reach slideshow.playback). This PR changes no slideshow or Settings code. Clippy on macOS needs MENU-BAR: clippy passes on macOS again (Quit, About and Settings share one branch) #2973's fix to apps/lightcraft/src/native_menu.rs, which main doesn't have yet; it was applied for the local run only, and Linux CI doesn't compile that file.

  • 18 model tests in crates/ui-egui/src/photo_menu_tests.rs (cargo test -p lightcraft-ui-egui --lib photo_menu::tests): every Photo-menu action that applies to a photo is offered; the grouping; labels and shortcuts equal the menu bar's; the right-clicked photo's checks; the view-dependent rows; the reasons on off rows; Restore in Recently Deleted; the Compare / Survey rows naming the photo; Add to My Photos for Local photos; the album rows; Locate Missing File; the photo rows' parameters; Set as Reference for a deleted photo; Export with Preset; the preset groups' order; the host reasons; and Copy File Path through the control channel (one path, then two photos plus a virtual copy).

  • Failing first: against the current menu, transcribed into this model's shape on a throwaway branch, 7 of the first 8 tests failed; the eighth (Restore in Recently Deleted) passed there, as it should: it guards behavior the old menu already had. For the other 10, which cover branches the old menu doesn't have, each branch was broken on purpose in a throwaway copy (the Compare / Survey parameters, Add to My Photos, the album rows, Locate, the Export with Preset filter, Find Similar's photo, Set as Reference for a deleted photo, the path dedupe, the Favorites group) and its test failed every time.

  • The unchecked box: nothing on screen changes in this part; part 2 has the screenshots and the app run.

Merging

Checklist

  • No new panic path in non-test code: no unwrap / expect / panic!, no indexing or unchecked arithmetic on a number from a file, a person or an agent (get, checked_mul, NaN and char boundaries handled)
  • New text on screen goes through tr() and has its key in crates/ui-egui/locales/*.json; a new shortcut is free in docs/library-shortcuts.md
  • New code has a caller: photo_menu::nodes and disabled_reason are called by MENU-CTX-GRID: the photo menu offers the Photo menu's actions, grouped by task (stacked on #3014) #3026 (part 2, stacked on this PR), which draws them as the photo's right-click menu; photo.copyPath is reachable now
  • Every new image, icon or other asset has its entry in assets/ATTRIBUTION.md; no font or media files added
  • Ready to merge

Walkthrough

The UI adds a photo context menu with actions that reflect the clicked photo and current app state. File actions can target a photo by ID, and a new command copies distinct selected file paths. Locale files add translations for these actions and their related messages.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to c7681

The context-menu actions target the clicked photo correctly, and path copying matches the selected photos without introducing a concrete merge-blocking risk.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to c7681

The change adds file-path copying and more precise photo targeting, with invalid photo references rejected before side effects. No broader filesystem authority or new network exposure was demonstrated. Risk is limited, although expectations for local automation access remain unconfirmed.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The new bulk-path outcome is bounded to selected File-source records in the current session. Explicit-ID Finder reveal can target an existing file-backed catalog photo, not an arbitrary path supplied to that command. Effects include returning local path information, writing clipboard text, and invoking the configured file-manager reveal service.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — Automation reachability is real, but it does not by itself establish a newly bypassed authorization boundary. The existing control interface already ran UI and engine commands, and Finder already returned the active photo's path at the PR base. The new bulk-path result expands convenience within that authority. The inspected dispatcher has no caller-specific authorization check; whether local clients require a separate trust boundary remains unestablished.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The inspected source assertions check that malformed or unknown IDs cause no additional reveal or relink of the active photo, and that virtual copies sharing a source path are copied once. These support target containment and repeatable path collection, but do not constitute executed runtime verification.

Comment thread crates/ui-egui/src/photo_menu.rs Outdated
nledford and others added 2 commits October 27, 2026 18:33
The right-click menu of a photo (grid, filmstrip, loupe, Compare, Survey) is a hand-built list in panels/grid.rs: one group of 12 unrelated actions, no shortcuts or check marks, labels that ignore the selection, and rows that drop their command's error. This adds the model a new menu is built from, with no caller yet; the next change draws it in place of the old one.

photo_menu::nodes builds the rows for a right-clicked photo from menubar::menu_bar, so each row has the Photo menu's label ("Delete 3 Photos"), shortcut, check mark and enabled state, grouped by task: open, rate / flag / label / describe (Metadata submenu), organize (target album, albums, stack, Find Similar), edit (Edit Settings submenu with copy / paste / sync / auto / Apply Preset by group in the Presets panel's order), versions and merge, Rotate & Flip, the file, where it is, export, Delete last. Rows that don't apply are left out (Open in Detail in Detail, Compare / Survey with one photo, album rows outside an album, Locate Missing File for a file that is there, Add to My Photos for library photos). The rating, flag and label rows are checked by the right-clicked photo's values and, in Compare and Survey, name it. photo_menu::disabled_reason says why an off row is off.

New UI command photo.copyPath (Copy File Path) puts the selected photos' paths on the clipboard. menubar's item, node and tidy are crate-visible for the model. 16 strings, in all 17 catalogs.

…clicked photo

The photo menu model's Show in Finder and Locate Missing File rows named no photo, so once drawn (the next change) they would reveal or relink the active photo when another selected photo was right-clicked; Locate would even appear because the right-clicked photo's file is missing. The rows now carry the photo's id, Show in Finder's enabled state follows that photo, and the photo.locate, app.showInFinder and app.showInFolders handlers use the id when given (the active photo otherwise, as the menu bar and Cmd+R still ask). A mistyped id is refused, naming the command, instead of falling back to the active photo, and an unknown one says so before any file dialog opens.
