Add scientific actuarial functions and bounded workbook analysis - #2803
Current published head: 54642c70ee413ae8a00fe3892999405e43ae6986 (tree 1666587f79ebeb4378231e756ddd8219a51ebb27). Normal merges preserve ACT history, MC82c/MC5ae and upstream main 2ff75179; all 95 ACT worksheet functions remain unchanged.
The latest shared CodeRabbit Major is fixed: the simulation site retains the physical formula sheet/cell while sheet-scoped names change only reference resolution. The AR1 validation message now says step 1–1200. The previous outside-diff range-refusal fix is also included: singleton error sentinels survive shape validation and TRIMRANGE, while legitimate array error cells and 1x1 errors retain their ordinary semantics.
Validation scope:
Physical-origin regression reproduced RED before the fix; calc then passed 104 tests with one preexisting ignored test. A native 64-trial/two-sheet regression compares named calls with direct calls at each physical site and passes. An independent reviewer reran that exact test from its SHA256-verified executable: PASS, without Cargo. The executable precedes the separately documented one-space cosmetic message delta.
Calc and engine all-target Clippy with warnings denied, formatting and diff checks pass on the MC5ae source, including the message correction.
Earlier MC/main 14d7882 completed ten gates in documented ENOSPC-recovery stages: 2,832 native Rust tests passed, one preexisting ignored test, 24 Rust harnesses plus the AppKit custom executable. This is historical base evidence, not a claim of full validation of this newer ACT head.
The current combined ACT + MC + main snapshot matches all 764 source hashes (manifest SHA256 70e18f0e9bdf9e3fe873445662a895f13b3714e424d5bb4ef95d1e1b013495c3). The joint attempt stopped with ENOSPC during native artifact generation after workspace Clippy passed; full joint validation remains incomplete. The earlier joint attempt on tree 77ef1aca stopped with ENOSPC during Clippy and is not counted as PASS.
GridCraft 0.13.0 from this head is now installed, signature-verified and relaunched. Fresh authenticated native MCP smoke checks pass for the 95 ACT functions, six MC functions, seeded reproducibility, scoped-name parity and refusal/undo controls. Three existing workbooks were restored with verified backups. Private-workbook migration is tracked separately and is not part of the claimed code-contribution validation. No private workbook data is included in this PR.
The earlier description and validation history below describe their named historical commits; the current-head scope above takes precedence.
Adds 95 Rust-native ACT.* worksheet functions with explicit numerical contracts, synthetic workbook examples and independent reference oracles. The same workbook can combine deterministic actuarial formulas with seeded Monte Carlo analysis, progress, cooperative cancellation and bounded calculation work.
The implemented scope covers financial curves and supplied mortality tables; insurance, annuities, premiums and reserves; compound losses and discrete VaR/TVaR; claim layers and reinsurance; Chain Ladder, BF, Mack and residual bootstrap; credibility and GLMs; DTMC/CTMC, nonhomogeneous and duration-dependent semi-Markov models; censored survival, competing risks and Cox; conjugate Bayes; GPD/POT and copulas; sensitivities, finite-candidate reinsurance optimization, two-instrument ALM and validated polynomial proxies. Each method documents its supported estimand, assumptions and numerical limits. These contracts do not claim regulatory certification or coverage of every actuarial model.
Mathematics lives in L1 functions, with no engine dependency or duplicated sampler/RNG. ACT calls reserve conservative work before costly algorithms and use adaptive checkpoints. Mandatory calculation refusal remains terminal through lifted calls, nested commands and IFERROR. Optional CF refusal is isolated to styling; real enclosing refusal remains terminal. Skipped optional arguments select their documented defaults without changing shared Excel coercion.
Dependency: #2801. This branch includes published MC.10 fe58514 and upstream main at 4328437 (release 0.13.0), preserving the existing contribution history. Until the dependency lands, the aggregate diff contains its engine/UI work as well as ACT. data.monteCarlo retains synchronous compatibility; analysis.start/status/step/cancel/finish provides cooperative jobs. Cancellation accepted before publication leaves the source and reports intact, and successful publication is one canonical undo action. Failed imports prepare their document locally before changing the session. Conditional-formatting formulas have separate bounded render work and a revision/identity/TTL cache. Local or frame refusal no longer poisons a printing command or suppresses an inexpensive neighbouring style. Statistical finalization stays under analysis accounting; structural publication recalculation uses the enclosing command allowance, with trial and rollback checks preserved.
Ordinary edits, imports and recalculation have a separate 10B-unit logical-command cap; read-only queries retain a 1B-unit cap, including nested queries and locally trusted workbooks. Analysis remains bounded at 100M/run and 300M/workbook per fixed 60-second reservation window. Render formulas have a 100K local cap and separate 1M window. Work limits are conservative operation estimates, not CPU deadlines or a security sandbox. A native kernel is indivisible between its checkpoints. CLI/MCP command discovery includes the supported maxWork override.
Validation on the integrated 0.13.0 source: all 10 quality gates PASS, 2,714 native tests across 24 binaries, one preexisting ignored test, plus doctests, assets, layers, WASM, parity and keytips. The initial combined invocation stopped at native linking because disk filled; native tests and the remaining gates then passed in unchanged-source stages. This is recorded as staged validation, not a single uninterrupted CI invocation. All 251 function-library tests and nine ACT workbook tests pass. The latest review fixes add seven regressions; independent review reran 21 compiled focal tests and six real CLI RED/GREEN controls for synchronous/incremental publication and PDF export. PDF content/raster inspection verifies the neighbouring style is retained and the costly rule omitted. Earlier review also covered the mathematical pack: Independent review repeated 156 focal native cases and real CLI/MCP numerical, discovery, skipped-default, quota/IFERROR, recovery and import-admission controls against the new 0.13.0 artifacts. The exact refused-import consumer preserves the blank document UID/Arc and leaves an empty session empty, with positive work checkpoints reached.
The large-recalculation policy regression measures real SUM on 16/64-row models and charges a conservative 50,000-row bound through the production meter; queries reject that bound while bulk operations accept it. A separate full 50,000-row CLI/MCP experiment reached a 180-second watchdog during setup and is not counted as a pass or a quota-refusal control. No CPU deadline is claimed.
Earlier mathematical reviews retain closed-form oracles, negative controls, recovery checks and copula properties; 62 independent reference cases are committed at the workbook boundary. Documentation and two original synthetic replay scripts are included, and CONTRIBUTING.md is retained. Print/PDF uses a separately documented fresh per-sheet bank, including enclosing-hook requirements for library callers; it does not promise process- or tenant-wide containment.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added Monte Carlo simulation from the Data menu and data.monteCarlo, with multiple distributions, random or Latin-hypercube sampling, optional correlations, and reports featuring statistics, sensitivity analysis, diagnostics, and charts.
Added progress and cancellation controls, plus seeded stochastic worksheet functions for count distributions and AR(1) processes.
Added 95 actuarial worksheet functions spanning life calculations, risk, reserving, survival analysis, state models, and more.
Reliability
Cancelled, limited, or unsuccessful simulations leave source workbook cells unchanged.
Documentation
Added guides and workbook examples for Monte Carlo and actuarial features, along with contributor guidance.
No confirmed merge-blocking issue is identified, but confirm the reported scoped-name Monte Carlo behavior before the desktop update and workbook migration.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 54642
The examined execution paths isolate trial calculations from the source workbook and check failures before publishing reports. No concrete security regression was established. Some integration and concurrency behavior remains unverified, so this is not a complete safety determination.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — Workbook-controlled formulas can drive sampling and consume calculation resources. In the examined application path, trial mutations are confined to cloned workbook state and source changes occur through report commit. This bounds the demonstrated state exposure to the owning workbook workflow, but does not establish isolation guarantees for external embeddings.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Simulation identity distinguishes physical formula origin from reference-resolution location. Computed criteria pass their actual formula site, and scoped-name tests verify caller-site behavior. This supports stochastic identity correctness; sheet/cell identity is not itself tenant or caller authorization.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Simulation and work capabilities use thread-local lifetime guards that restore previous context on drop. Each trial creates a fresh runtime, and analysis scope ends before structural report editing. These mechanisms support cleanup and repeated execution; simultaneous execution was not independently stress-tested.

Applies 6247a59 and 84036fe in order, preserving the actuarial architecture documentation. Excludes later operational work for its own integration commit. Combined cargo xtask ci: all 10 gates passed.
Keep explicit zero and blank-reference coercion distinct, add nine function regressions and eight parsed engine oracles, and remove the internal validation note. Independent review passed 15 analytic checks and ten RED controls; clean integrated cargo xtask ci passed all ten gates. Operational budgets, progress and cancellation remain tracked for a subsequent integration.
Add default-compatible Ctx::charge_work, pre-call/input and output-allocation accounting, and per-broadcast kernel checkpoints with saturating estimates. Tests prove refusal precedes execution, partial broadcasts stop, and repeated calls share a host budget. No ACT-specific symbols are introduced. Focused library tests: 240 passed; all-target library Clippy: passed. Full integrated CI follows in the owning MC session as coordinated.

Keep binomial zero-count grids charged independently of recurrence count and include beta-binomial cumulative count in estimates. Add regression for requested PMF grid growth at count zero. Focused library tests: 248 passed; Clippy all targets passed.
Avoid charging closed independent/Frank formulas as numerical quadrature, retain conservative elliptical and bounded inverse reserves, and normalize all documented family aliases. Library tests: 249 passed; Clippy all targets passed.
Add regressions for observable progress, non-refunded shared budgets across cancellations, seeded synchronous/incremental equivalence, one-action undo and terminal lifted ACT exhaustion despite IFERROR. Record full integrated CI: 10/10 gates, 2677 native tests/24 binaries, WASM. Independent review: 126 direct tests, eight MCP checks and three real CLI RED/GREEN controls passed.

Preserve the numerical implementation while satisfying the wildcard-import denial introduced by main55b5a45. Focused main-based WORK1/2+ACT compatibility check: all-target Clippy -D warnings and 251 function-library tests passed. Full integrated gate follows the final shared MC/main base.
Integrate main 55b5a45 and reuse the generic rendering/admission work from 03dbb8c while retaining ACT-specific documentation and oracles in the ACT contribution. Adapt generic CF regressions and imports/report grouping to current upstream lint conventions. Validation: cargo xtask ci all ten gates passed, 2593 native tests across 24 binaries, independent file-open refusal consumer green, and native CF rendering inspected.
Allow finite 10B-unit edit/recalculation/import work while keeping 1B query limits, including nested queries and locally trusted books. Preserve parent accounting and sticky refusal. Add real SUM16/64 and conservative 50k policy gates; clarify the cache-wide TTL for all conditional looks. Validated as byte-identical generic code in the joint ACT CI: all ten gates and 2707 native tests passed.
Preserve the published actuarial history and integrate MC.7 df9d947 with upstream 55b5a45. Verified the documented construction and limits against print, CF cache and workload source; diff whitespace check passed.
Merge upstream 4328437 without product-code changes. The combined release passed cargo xtask ci 10/10 with 2707 native tests across 24 binaries and one preexisting ignored test. Independent runtime review repeated 156 focal tests, CLI/MCP numerical and quota controls, version/discovery checks and exact file.open admission probes. Retain finite 10B bulk and 1B query limits and document the supported scientific scope.

Published 329aea7f4e9ec4ed8aeb1c0adca0675e5815e686, preserving the original generic fix bf29d2afa742b6b57ad8b53b16f8d1968506b1cd through a normal merge.
Sparse range reads now charge only the spill-index interval traversed. The regression covers a 10,000-value unrelated spill, 100 small SUM formulas and an edit with independently expected result 10 under a 50,000-unit allowance. ACT formulas are unchanged.
Validation of this generic fix is recorded in the MC final-source run: 2,643 native tests across 24 binaries, one preexisting ignored test, and all ten gates completed in stages after ENOSPC recovery. A fresh full ACT run on this new PR head has not been performed.
The newer upstream-main integration and MC11 functionality remain pending; this update does not claim those changes are integrated or that current upstream conflicts are resolved.

Propagate refused range reads as `#NUM`!.

Propagate refused range reads as #NUM!.
PassHost::range_values returns a one-element #NUM! sentinel when work is refused. Evaluator::area_value keeps the requested dimensions, so Array::new rejects the shortened vector and the caller returns #VALUE!. TRIMRANGE can also treat the sentinel as the first non-blank cell instead of terminating with #NUM!.

Review comment at @crates/calc/src/recalc/pass_host.rs around lines 507 - 511:
Update Evaluator::area_value and the TRIMRANGE range-reading path to detect when
range_values returns a vector whose length does not match the requested
dimensions. Propagate a one-element error sentinel as that error, especially
#NUM!, and return #VALUE! for other mismatched lengths before constructing the
array or calculating bounds.

Propagate a shortened singleton error reply without reshaping it to VALUE
or treating it as a nonblank TRIMRANGE cell. Reject other malformed lengths
as VALUE while retaining correctly shaped arrays and genuine cell errors.
Document both affected functions and cover all cases with four regressions.
Validation: calc 103 PASS / 1 pre-existing ignored, including focal4 PASS;
Clippy calc all-targets -D warnings PASS. Base MC14d passed all10 local gates,
2832 Rust tests plus native AppKit. Full joint MC+ACT validation is pending;
its frozen tree77ef1aca contains these byte-identical calculation files.
No desktop installation or original-workbook migration claimed yet.

Known blocking follow-up for the shared MC code in this PR: CodeRabbit review on MC82c reports that a sheet-scoped name can change the evaluator's reference-resolution sheet while retaining the caller's cell address. Passing that temporary sheet as the simulation site can alias count streams from different physical formula sheets. The same path is present in this PR's current head 2dfbe93f.
The MC owner is preparing the physical-origin fix and regressions in an isolated source. ACT, MC validation snapshots and tree 77ef1aca remain unchanged until that fix is delivered. This Major must be addressed before the desktop update or original-workbook migration. The message-spacing Minor remains a separate cosmetic follow-up.
The joint CI attempt on tree 77ef1aca stopped with ENOSPC during Clippy. It is not a joint PASS; a stale RUNNING proof file is not evidence of a live Cargo process or successful validation. Previously documented MC14d validation and the four range-error focal passes retain only their stated scope.
Keep immutable formula origins separate from defined-name reference resolution. Cover scoped inputs and physical sites in calc, and exact seeded named-versus-direct count streams across 64 engine trials. Correct the AR1 step wording.
Validation: calc RED reproduced, then 104 passed/1 pre-existing ignored; seeded engine regression passed; calc and engine Clippy all-targets -D warnings, rustfmt and diff check passed. Fresh combined MC+ACT CI remains pending after the prior ENOSPC interruption.

Normal merges preserve ACT history, MC82c/MC5ae and upstream main2ff75179; all 95 ACT worksheet functions remain unchanged. The latest shared CodeRabbit Major is fixed: the simulation site retains the physical formula sheet/cell while sheet-scoped names change only reference resolution. The AR1 validation message now says
step 1–1200. The previous outside-diff range-refusal fix is also included: singleton error sentinels survive shape validation and TRIMRANGE, while legitimate array error cells and 1x1 errors retain their ordinary semantics.Validation scope:
14d7882completed ten gates in documented ENOSPC-recovery stages: 2,832 native Rust tests passed, one preexisting ignored test, 24 Rust harnesses plus the AppKit custom executable. This is historical base evidence, not a claim of full validation of this newer ACT head.70e18f0e9bdf9e3fe873445662a895f13b3714e424d5bb4ef95d1e1b013495c3). The joint attempt stopped with ENOSPC during native artifact generation after workspace Clippy passed; full joint validation remains incomplete. The earlier joint attempt on tree77ef1acastopped with ENOSPC during Clippy and is not counted as PASS.The earlier description and validation history below describe their named historical commits; the current-head scope above takes precedence.
Adds 95 Rust-native
ACT.*worksheet functions with explicit numerical contracts, synthetic workbook examples and independent reference oracles.
Mathematics lives in L1
functions, with no engine dependency or duplicated sampler/RNG. ACT calls reserve conservative work before costly algorithms and use adaptive checkpoints. Mandatory calculation refusal remains terminal through lifted calls, nested commands andIFERROR. Optional CF refusal is isolated to styling; real enclosing refusal remains terminal. Skipped optional arguments select their documented defaults without changing shared Excel coercion.Dependency: #2801. This branch includes published MC.10
fe58514and upstreammainat4328437(release 0.13.0), preserving the existing contribution history. Until the dependency lands, the aggregate diff contains its engine/UI work as well as ACT.data.monteCarloretains synchronous compatibility;analysis.start/status/step/cancel/finishprovides cooperative jobs. Statistical finalization stays under analysis accounting; structural publication recalculation uses the enclosing command allowance, with trial and rollback checks preserved.Ordinary edits, imports and recalculation have a separate 10B-unit logical-command cap; read-only queries retain a 1B-unit cap, including nested queries and locally trusted workbooks. CLI/MCP command discovery includes the supported
maxWorkoverride.Validation on the integrated 0.13.0 source: all 10 quality gates PASS, 2,714 native tests across 24 binaries, one preexisting ignored test, plus doctests, assets, layers, WASM, parity and keytips. Earlier review also covered the mathematical pack: Independent review repeated 156 focal native cases and real CLI/MCP numerical, discovery, skipped-default, quota/
IFERROR, recovery and import-admission controls against the new 0.13.0 artifacts. The exact refused-import consumer preserves the blank document UID/Arc and leaves an empty session empty, with positive work checkpoints reached. The large-recalculation policy regression measures real
SUMon 16/64-row models and charges a conservative 50,000-row bound through the production meter; queries reject that bound while bulk operations accept it. A separate full 50,000-row CLI/MCP experiment reached a 180-second watchdog during setup and is not counted as a pass or a quota-refusal control. No CPU deadline is claimed.Earlier mathematical reviews retain closed-form oracles, negative controls, recovery checks and copula properties; 62 independent reference cases are committed at the workbook boundary. Documentation and two original synthetic replay scripts are included, and
CONTRIBUTING.mdis retained. Print/PDF uses a separately documented fresh per-sheet bank, including enclosing-hook requirements for library callers; it does not promise process- or tenant-wide containment.Summary by CodeRabbit
