File.rename(name) supports renaming a closed regular file on Linux to a sibling basename, returning true on success. It checks that the destination is absent before renaming and retains the script file-write preference and access checks.

This follow-up addresses the retained File object reported in review: after the host returns true, the wrapper updates its basename while preserving its directory. The name is converted once, and false results, errors and the open-file guard retain their existing behavior. The extended success regression retains the object and checks its new name and existence after the original filesystem-byte, source-absence and sentinel controls.

Seven regression cases cover success and preservation when writing is disabled, the name contains a path, the destination already exists, the File has an open edit buffer, the source is a symbolic link, or parent-path resolution is ambiguous. The meaningful baseline failed at the final retained-object assertion after the filesystem controls; the corrected selected case passed. The final formatted source passed that regression again in the full suite.

The follow-up changes two paths, prelude.js and tests.rs, within the existing five-path PR aggregate. It retains the published rename history and earlier prerequisite commit 2de015fe9f8de5b62ed2c9e1bd9b5cd044aad585 from #1776: its shader correction and historical test-fixture lint allowance. It does not incorporate #1776's later CPU-reference revision or claim validation of current main's separate Mem recovery.

The original cargo xtask ci passed on final composed source d48db7fe… based on that exact prerequisite: formatting, strict release Clippy, 3,540 native tests and 2 doctests passed, with 31 native tests ignored and no failures. The script library passed all 107 tests, including all seven rename regressions; the GPU harness reported 214 passes. Filesystem policy, layering, the 39-asset gate and the 32-crate Wasm compilation check passed. The non-fatal Wasm unused-field warning and recorded Mesa diagnostics remain in the evidence.

Validation ran on Linux with Mesa software-rendering settings and EFFECTCRAFT_REQUIRE_GPU=1. Source comparison against ef74d82 found no rename implementation overlap, but does not establish current-main runtime validation. These results do not establish Adobe object-state parity, other-platform, other-backend, universal GPU-capability, native GUI, browser or Wasm-runtime coverage.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • On Linux, File.rename(newName) can rename a closed file within its current directory when file-write access is allowed. The file’s path updates after a successful rename.
  • Limitations
    • Renaming is unsupported on non-Linux platforms. Open files, names that include a path, and destinations that already exist cannot be renamed.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved coordinate calculations for the hex-tile visual effect.

Rename closed regular files to a sibling basename through the existing
file-write gate. Check that the destination is absent before renaming;
reject path-valued names, open edit buffers, symbolic-link sources and
ambiguous parent resolution.
Add seven regression cases for byte preservation and refusal behavior.
Sort the existing footage test's expected paths.

Evaluate the third cube coordinate symmetrically to retain the intended centerline tie. Keep the existing pixel oracle and tolerance.

Scope the Mem fixture mutex unwrap allowance so the original strict CI can validate this base.

Preserve closed regular-file rename behavior, destination and access guards, and the seven unchanged regression cases.

Include published HexTile prerequisite PR1776 and its scoped test-fixture lint allowance.

📝 Walkthrough

The changes update the third-coordinate calculation in fp2_hextile and add host-backed File.rename handling. Linux rename checks and tests cover success and refusal cases. The test services implementation also receives a comment and lint allowance.

Changes: Hex-tile coordinate calculation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Direct third-coordinate calculation
crates/gpu/src/shaders/fx_pixel2.wgsl
fp2_hextile calculates the third cube coordinate directly from u and v instead of deriving it from the other coordinates.

File.rename

Layer / File(s) Summary
Script rename handling
crates/script/src/prelude.js, crates/script/src/runtime.rs
File.rename(newName) rejects open files and delegates closed-file requests to the host. On Linux, the host checks access and path conditions before attempting a filesystem rename. Other platforms return an unsupported-operation error.
Rename validation
crates/script/src/tests.rs, crates/script/src/tests_services.rs
Linux tests cover successful renames and cases involving disabled write access, path-valued names, existing destinations, open files, symlink sources, and ambiguous parent paths. The test services implementation adds a comment about poisoned fixture mutexes and allows clippy::unwrap_used.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to e6191

File.rename now renames closed regular files on Linux and refuses the unsafe cases. No remaining merge-blocking risk is evident from the supplied review.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to dcc5d

The existing write permission still applies. However, concurrent file changes can defeat the destination-preservation checks and cause unintended replacement. This is a bounded data-integrity risk, not a demonstrated permission bypass.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: The new Linux operation checks destination absence before an overwrite-capable std::fs::rename. A concurrent writer can create the destination between those steps, causing unexpected replacement despite the explicit existing-destination rejection. Source and parent-path identity checks are likewise not bound to the final raw-path operation. This introduces a filesystem data-preservation failure absent when rename always threw. It requires enabled script writes and concurrent namespace mutation; it is not an established authorization or tenant-boundary bypass.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Scripts control the source path and destination basename. With the write preference enabled, check_access imposes no project-root restriction, so affected files can lie outside the project, subject to host filesystem permissions. This broad write authority predates rename; the new operation adds a sibling-name move within it.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A concurrent namespace writer can invalidate the checked destination absence before the final rename, potentially causing unintended data replacement. This is an inferred integrity and failure-containment path, not an executed exploit or a demonstrated escape from the disabled write gate.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Both rename paths require the existing scripting write preference. When disabled, the first write check rejects the request before mutation. The project-directory allowance applies only to reads and does not authorize rename. Basename, source-type and canonical-path checks provide additional stable-namespace restrictions.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The seven inspected regressions cover successful byte preservation and rejection for disabled writes, path-valued names, pre-existing destinations, open buffers, symlink sources and ambiguous parents. These cases exercise stable filesystem state; they do not establish that the preflight predicates remain true during concurrent namespace changes.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Use an atomic no-replace rename to enforce destination preservation at the mutation itself. Explicitly define source-identity and post-success File-object semantics; if concurrent namespace replacement must be rejected, design that guarantee around stable directory references rather than repeated raw-path resolution.
