Reuse Slides: show each slide's thumbnail in the picker - #1485
Problem. When reusing slides from another presentation, people pick them by what is on them. DeckCraft's picker (slide.reuseList, #1109) listed titles only, so untitled slides, or several with the same title, were hard to tell apart. docs/gaps.md lists "reuse slides pane with thumbnails" among the smaller missing rows.
Change. Each row of the picker now starts with a thumbnail of that slide, drawn from the picked file by the same renderer and texture cache as the slide pane. The picker keeps its own cache, which is dropped when the dialog closes. Only rows in view render, three a frame, and only the first 200 slides get thumbnails. A slide that can't be drawn keeps its title next to a "No preview" placeholder. Ticking, Select All/None, Keep source formatting and where the slides are inserted are unchanged, and it is still a dialog, not a docked pane. docs/gaps.md now lists only the docked pane, and ROADMAP.md has a progress-log line.
Test. New tests in reuse_picker_tests.rs cover four cases. A 3-slide file renders 3 thumbnails and no more on later frames. Ticking only slide 2 inserts only slide 2. A listed slide the file doesn't have shows its title with the placeholder. A 205-slide file shows the placeholder for slides 201–205 and renders only the rows in view. The existing picker tests pass unchanged.
Checked.cargo fmt --check; cargo clippy -p deckcraft-ui-egui --all-targets -D warnings; cargo test -p deckcraft-ui-egui --lib (one failure, start_screen_opens_the_palette_and_preferences, which also fails on main here because craft-fonts isn't checked out); cargo xtask wasm.
Also adds my entry to contributors/people.toml for the About window.
Prepared with AI assistance (Claude Code); I reviewed the change and ran the checks.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
The Reuse Slides picker shows slide thumbnails beside slide names in a taller, vertically scrollable list.
Thumbnails render progressively as you browse, with only a few generated at a time to keep the picker responsive.
Previews are available for up to the first 200 slides; slides beyond that remain listed without thumbnails.
A placeholder appears when a slide preview is unavailable.
When reusing slides from another presentation, people pick them by what
is on them: many decks have untitled slides or several slides with the
same title, so a list of titles alone makes the right slide hard to
find. The picker listed titles only.
Each row now starts with the slide drawn from the picked file, with the
same renderer and texture cache as the slide pane, in a cache of its own
that is dropped with the dialog. Only rows in view render, three a
frame, for the first 200 slides; a slide that can't be drawn keeps its
title beside a "No preview" placeholder. Ticking, Keep source
formatting and where the slides go are unchanged.
docs/gaps.md keeps only Reuse Slides as a docked pane.

The Reuse Slides picker now displays thumbnails for eligible slides in a selected presentation. Thumbnail rendering is limited to visible rows, three thumbnails per UI pass, and the first 200 slides. Tests cover rendering, placeholders, selection, and preview cleanup.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 8bb17
The picker remains usable, but supported path-only sources lack previews and very long slide titles can be clipped. These issues are suitable for bounded follow-up rather than blocking the change.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 8bb17
The change adds automatic previews of a file the user has selected, without changing which slides are inserted or their destination. Thumbnail work is incrementally limited, and closing the picker clears its preview state. No material security regression was established. Remaining uncertainty includes malformed-file resource behavior and verification of the contributor name.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — A malicious selected presentation can now reach the application's in-process renderer before any slide is inserted. The inspected picture path resolves media from embedded presentation bytes rather than dereferencing an external path or URL; this is an earlier rendering trigger within the existing desktop file-processing boundary, not an identified privilege expansion.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Contributor names remain display data, not authorization identities. The unchanged generator requires a matching contributor JSON row with people_entry=true before using its TOML names and emits those names as quoted Rust string literals. The credits consumer selects the requested name or falls back to the login. These controls do not themselves establish consent for this particular entry.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The picker permits thumbnail generation only for indices below 200 and rows intersecting an expanded viewport, with three new renders per UI pass. Existing rendering catches panics and returns a blank image, and raster decoding checks decoded dimensions against a size cap. These are useful containment controls, but not an aggregate CPU or memory guarantee for a whole presentation.
observed — Dialog dismissal drops the picker-owned parsed presentation and texture cache. The renderer also has an existing process-wide decoded-image cache, so dismissal should not be interpreted as immediate erasure of every decoded or retained media byte.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — An optional follow-up is a cancellation-aware preview resource budget covering the second parse and individual slide rendering, rather than relying solely on slide-count and per-pass limits. This is hardening, not a verified denial-of-service finding.

Ran on Windows (GNU toolchain) via win-cargo.sh with two Cargo jobs: test -p deckcraft-ui-egui --lib reuse_picker_tests (9 passed) and test -p deckcraft-ui-egui --lib (421 passed, 4 ignored). The tests cover source-slide selection, a missing-slide placeholder, and the 200-slide thumbnail cutoff. Code inspection confirms thumbnail rendering is clip-gated, limited to three new thumbnails per frame, and the preview cache is cleared when the dialog closes. I did not run interactive scrolling, reopening with a different source, or cancellation scenarios for this picker, nor Linux/macOS tests. git merge-tree origin/main origin/pr-1485 reported no conflicts. Changed-file overlap exists with #1519, #1499, #1488, and #1456.

Clear reuse_preview when ui.dialog.close closes the Reuse Slides dialog.
ui.dialog.close sets app.dialog to None and returns without touching app.reuse_preview. dialogs::show returns early when no dialog is open, so its trailing cleanup does not run. The parsed presentation and thumbnail textures then stay in memory after the dialog closes. They are released only by a later successful reuse pick, or by a later show that sees a dialog other than reuseSlides. The control protocol documents ui.dialog.close, so a scripted session can reach this path.

The parsed presentation and its thumbnails were released only at the end
of dialogs::show, after an early return taken whenever no dialog is open,
so ui.dialog.close (or anything else that clears the dialog outside it)
kept them in memory. show now enforces that rule after the dialog body
on every path.
@coderabbitai Valid, and not only for ui.dialog.close: the rule "the preview lives only while Reuse Slides is open" ran at the end of dialogs::show, after an early return taken whenever no dialog is open, so anything that clears the dialog outside it skipped the cleanup. Fixed in fc091ca by enforcing the rule in one place on every path: show runs the dialog body (show_active) and then drops the preview unless Reuse Slides is still the open dialog. New test the_thumbnails_go_when_a_script_closes_the_dialog closes the dialog through the control protocol and checks the parsed file and its textures are released (it fails without the change).

@ashokram-si Confirmed by source inspection. show now runs cleanup after show_active returns, including when no dialog is open. This covers closure outside the dialog body.
The new regression test sends ui.dialog.close, advances one frame, and checks that both the dialog and reuse_preview are absent. This addresses the cleanup concern. I did not run the test.

Learning: Within repository "storytold/deckcraft", only for files matching one of ["crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs.rs"]: When reviewing Reuse Slides preview lifecycle changes in crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs.rs, verify that cleanup runs even when no dialog is open or another dialog is active. The parsed source presentation and thumbnail textures must be retained only while reuseSlides remains open. Check that regression coverage closes the dialog through the control protocol and verifies that reuse_preview is cleared after the next UI frame.

…and the insert
With no host reader the picker passed the path on, so the engine read the
file once to list it and again to insert, and the thumbnails had nothing
to draw. read_picked reads it once (the host's reader, else the engine's,
which keeps to the automation read root) and every use takes those bytes.

ReviewerA — source-read COMMENT (not an approval)
I read the first hunk: the PR adds the author to contributors/people.toml (a real_name only, no sync_github_name, which differs from the neighbouring entries: please check the intended setting) and changes the app so Reuse Slides shows each slide's thumbnail in the picker. A picker of text titles is hard to use, so thumbnails are an improvement. Rendering many slides is expensive: render lazily for the visible rows, cache the results, render on a background thread, and show a placeholder meanwhile; a source deck with 500 slides must not freeze the UI. I did not read the rest. Add tests for the lazy loading (a counter of renders), a slide that fails to render (a placeholder), and closing the dialog (cancel pending work). Nothing was run.
I ran nothing and have no exact-head CI result for this PR, so this is not an approval. Where a diff was long I read its code hunks rather than every generated or documentation line.
The people.toml entry is intended: a real name only, without sync_github_name. The thumbnails are already lazy: only rows in view render, at most three per frame, for the first 200 slides, and each texture is cached (each_listed_slide_shows_a_thumbnail_of_the_picked_file counts renders and checks a settled list renders nothing more); a slide that can't be drawn keeps its title beside a placeholder (a_slide_that_cannot_be_drawn_keeps_its_title_beside_a_placeholder); closing the dialog releases the file and its textures however it closes (the_thumbnails_go_when_a_script_closes_the_dialog). Rendering stays on the UI thread but bounded per frame, since egui uploads textures there.
