  • New command format.languageAll {lang?, noProof?}: sets the proofing language
(or Do Not Check Spelling) on every run in the deck — slides, groups, table cells,
speaker notes, masters and layouts — plus the master and default text styles, so
new text inherits it. Works with nothing selected; one undo step.
  • The per-selection format.language is unchanged; with nothing selected the dialog
    defaults to Whole presentation.
  • Tests: engine language_all_marks_every_text_in_the_deck_with_nothing_selected,
    UI the_language_dialog_marks_the_whole_presentation.
  • Docs: ROADMAP progress log, gaps.md, localization-parity.md.
  • Also adds my own contributors/people.toml entry (sync_github_name).

Note: replacefonts_tests::ribbon_button_opens_the_dialog_and_replaces fails on
main too (unrelated to this change).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Apply a proofing language or disable spelling checks across an entire presentation, including slides, notes, masters, layouts, and new text. The Language dialog defaults to this scope when nothing is selected.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Group nesting is limited to 32 levels to prevent unsupported grouping.
    • Proofing language and status messages are laid out more clearly alongside status bar controls.
  • Documentation
    • Updated guidance and roadmap notes for whole-presentation proofing settings.

Walkthrough

The pull request adds a command and dialog option to apply proofing settings across a presentation. It also limits group nesting to 32 levels, changes status-bar content layout, and adds a contributor record.

Changes: Presentation-wide proofing language

Layer / File(s) Summary
Presentation-wide language command
crates/engine/src/cmd/format.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs
The engine adds format.languageAll for presentation-wide updates and reuses language validation for format.language. Tests cover supported text and style structures, validation, and undo behavior.
Language dialog scope
crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs
The dialog selects whole-presentation scope when no text or shapes are selected. It dispatches format.languageAll or format.language based on scope. UI tests cover updates across slides.
Proofing documentation
ROADMAP.md, docs/gaps.md, docs/localization-parity.md
The roadmap and documentation record whole-presentation proofing support and describe its coverage.

Group nesting limit

Layer / File(s) Summary
Nested group depth limit
crates/engine/src/cmd/arrange.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs, ROADMAP.md
The arrange command rejects grouping that exceeds 32 nested levels. Tests cover the limit, revision behavior after rejection, and saving and reloading at the limit. The roadmap records the limit and the proofing update.

Status-bar layout

Layer / File(s) Summary
Status-bar content layout
crates/ui-egui/src/status.rs
The status bar positions and clips language and transient status text before the right-side controls. The language hit target is constrained to the clipped region.

Contributor record

Layer / File(s) Summary
Contributor entry
contributors/people.toml
The contributor list adds Katacc with GitHub-name synchronization enabled.

Merge Risk: Low · up to f65c4

The documentation update is mergeable with owner awareness. Existing slide-command and shape-deletion concerns remain open, but this change does not appear to worsen them.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 129a3

The operation can change proofing settings throughout the active presentation, including defaults for future text. Validation and snapshot-based undo constrain its impact. No introduced security weakness was established in the inspected paths, but verification of the broader change is incomplete.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A caller able to execute the new command can change proofing settings without a selection throughout the active presentation, including hidden structural content such as notes and inherited defaults. The demonstrated mutation scope is that active document; the implementation does not iterate over other open documents.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The wider proofing operation changes document properties through the existing command executor rather than introducing a separate execution mechanism. It requires an active document, and supplied language tags must be nonempty, at most 35 bytes, and contain only ASCII letters, digits or hyphens before mutation begins. These are parameter and document-presence controls, not evidence of authentication at external callers.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The proofing traversal stops beyond depth 64. A deeper-text omission is not established as reachable through the inspected grouping and PPTX import paths: grouping rejects nesting beyond 32, and PPTX shape-tree import has its own depth-32 limit. This counterevidence does not establish a universal invariant for arbitrary programmatically constructed presentations.

Exercise the no-selection default in the language dialog test.

The test enters text editing, calls text.selectAll, and then explicitly clicks Whole presentation. This does not exercise the default scope. Clear the selection before opening the dialog and remove the explicit scope click.

Added a separate test for the no-selection default (4928010) instead of changing this one, since this test covers switching to Whole presentation while text is selected. The new test clears the selection, checks Selected text is disabled, and applies the language without touching the scope radio.

For best results, initiate chat on the files or code changes.

@Katacc Thanks for clarifying. Keeping the tests separate makes sense:

  • The existing test covers switching to “Whole presentation” while text is selected.
  • The new test covers the no-selection default, verifies that “Selected text” is disabled, and applies the language without changing the scope.

This preserves coverage for both dialog paths.

Learning: In storytold/deckcraft, the language-dialog UI test `the_language_dialog_marks_the_whole_presentation` covers explicitly switching to “Whole presentation” while text is selected. Keep this coverage separate from the no-selection test, which checks that “Selected text” is disabled and applies the language without changing the default scope.

crates/engine/src/cmd/slide.rs:376
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject invalid indices in the remaining slide commands.

If a slide is selected, slide.hide with {"index":-1} still treats the invalid index as absent and hides the selected slide. slide.layout has the same selection fallback at Line 445. slide.new also treats an invalid at value as absent at Line 134 and inserts a slide. Use opt_usize_param on these paths so a supplied invalid index returns an error instead of changing the presentation.

🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Use sets for deletion membership checks.

When a slide contains many shapes, left.contains(i) scans the remaining shapes for each ID in before. A single deletion therefore does quadratic work and can delay the delete command. Collect left and gone into HashSet<ShapeId> values. Use gone for the animation checks too.

Thanks! Could you split this up? The arrange.group depth cap and the status-bar layout rework are separate changes and should be their own PRs, and the contributors/people.toml entry can ride with whichever lands first. Please also rebase so each commit appears once (right now every commit is in the branch twice, rebased and merged), since we land with merge commits.

Review › Language gets "Apply to: Selected text / Whole presentation".
The new format.languageAll command sets lang/noProof on every run in
the deck (slides, groups, table cells, notes, masters, layouts) and on
the master and default text styles, so new text inherits it. It needs
no selection and is one undo step; format.language is unchanged.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A layout placeholder's a:lstStyle can carry lang/noProof, and
ed::format_all only touched runs and end marks, so such a placeholder
kept its old language. Existing list style levels of shape, table cell
and notes bodies now get the edit too; bodies without one get none.

With no text or shape selected, Review › Language must apply to the
whole presentation without choosing it, and Selected text must be
disabled. The existing test still covers switching to Whole
presentation while text is selected.
