Picture Format › Crop had no crop mode: only fixed "10% / 20% each side" presets, and picture.crop changed the crop fractions while keeping the box, so the visible part stretched into it.

This adds cropping the way PowerPoint does it.

Crop mode (picture.cropMode, the top half of the now split Crop button, and Crop in the picture's context menu):

  • Black crop marks on the box: dragging them moves the box's edges over the picture, which keeps its size and place.
  • The rest of the picture shows faded outside the box, with round handles at its edges. Dragging the picture moves it under the box (Shift locks the axis); its corner handles scale it keeping its proportions (Shift frees them), its side handles stretch it one way.
  • Enter, Escape, a click away from the picture or the Crop button again end it. Each drag is one undo step.
  • Works in the box's local frame, so rotated and flipped pictures crop correctly.

Crop menu (bottom half of the button): Crop, Crop to Shape, Aspect Ratio (1:1, 2:3, 3:4, 3:5, 4:5, 3:2, 4:3, 5:3, 5:4, 16:9, 16:10: the largest box of that shape inside the picture, centred, then crop mode), Fill and Fit (keep the box; the picture covers it, or shows whole inside it), Reset Crop.

picture.crop now moves the box with the crop so the picture keeps its scale, as PowerPoint's crop fields do; keepFrame: true keeps the old behaviour (box fixed, picture stretched). New commands: picture.cropMode, picture.cropAspect, picture.cropFill. Pointer hits crop, cropImage and cropPan let agents drive crop mode through pointer too.

Validation:

  • cargo test -p deckcraft-engine --lib: all passed, including new tests for the crop command, the crop, move and scale gestures with undo and leaving crop mode, aspect ratio, fill and fit, and the crop geometry.
  • cargo clippy -p deckcraft-engine -p deckcraft-ui-egui --lib --no-deps -- -D warnings: no new warnings (two existing ones in untouched code, clippy::collapsible_match at tools.rs Drag::Move and clippy::nonminimal_bool in begin_table_border, fail it on main as well).
  • cargo fmt --check: passed.
  • Built the Windows app (on 0.8.0) and ran it with the sample deck.

Suggested reviewers: nikitkara

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to a9f25

Crop operations can create inconsistent geometry, mishandle edits during normal transitions, or expose a non-working action. These issues should be fixed before merge.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to a9f25

The changes remain within picture editing, and document switches explicitly terminate crop gestures before another presentation becomes active. However, undo during an unfinished crop gesture can leave stale editing state that subsequently changes the restored picture without creating its own undo step.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Undo or redo during an active crop drag discards the interaction snapshot but leaves Drag::Crop alive. If the captured picture remains in the restored editing target, later pointer movement can overwrite its restored geometry and crop. Pointer release cannot create the gesture's undo entry because the interaction is already absent. This compromises same-document rollback containment; the inspected document-switch paths prevent the drag from carrying into another presentation.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated stale-state exposure is modification of picture geometry and crop within the active presentation's editing target. The inspected lifecycle controls prevent the captured crop drag from reaching a different presentation through document activation or closure; no cross-tenant or privilege escalation path was established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The affected Session document lifecycle methods retain their existing public signatures. The added coordination is internal cleanup, and crop target selection resolves shape IDs through the active document rather than accepting a separate document selector.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Command execution already restores the presentation and selection when an outer command fails after partial edits. That command-level protection is distinct from gesture recovery: crop pointer writes use Session.edit directly, while gesture undo history depends on the interaction snapshot surviving until commit.

tool.crop stayed set after Tab, slide navigation or Undo moved the selection
away, so the crop handles came back when the picture was selected again, the
first Enter/Escape was swallowed and picture.cropMode toggled the wrong way.
Session::settle_crop clears it whenever cropping() no longer holds: after
Session::select, after every command (including undo/redo restore), and
before key and pointer handling. Reselecting the same picture keeps it on.

set_active, add_document and close_document switched the active document
without settling crop mode, so switching A -> B -> A brought back the old
picture's crop handles. They now clear it whenever the active document
changes and run settle_crop() afterwards; re-activating the same
presentation or closing another one keeps it.

Finalize the crop interaction before changing documents.

The supported control API can send pointer events and document commands independently. If window.next, file.new, or file.close runs before crop release, document_changed clears only tool.crop. The retained Drag::Crop then processes later events against the new active document. Pointer release commits the new document, while the original document's Crop interaction remains open and loses its undo boundary.

Both points fixed:

  • c5fc5d5: Session::settle_crop() clears tool.crop only when cropping() no longer holds. It runs after select, after every command and in restore(), and as a fallback at the start of key/pointer. Test: crop_mode_ends_when_the_picture_stops_being_selected.
  • 5132635: set_active, add_document and close_document now call document_changed(), which ends crop mode when the active document's uid changes and then runs settle_crop(). Test: crop_mode_ends_when_another_presentation_becomes_active (A → B → A ends with crop mode off).

cargo test -p deckcraft-engine --lib: 341 passed.

If set_active, add_document or close_document ran in the middle of a crop
gesture, the Drag::Crop stayed in the tool state: the next pointer events
cropped the newly active presentation, and the original one kept an open
Crop interaction with no undo boundary. end_crop_drag() now drops the drag
and commits the Crop interaction on the original presentation, as releasing
the pointer does, before the active document changes.

Fixed in 2bba9cc. set_active, add_document and close_document now call end_crop_drag() before the active document changes, which drops the Drag::Crop and commits the "Crop" interaction on the original document, as pointer release does. document_changed() still handles the cleanup after the change. Added a_crop_drag_ends_in_its_own_presentation_when_another_becomes_active: it checks that the new document is untouched and the original gets one undoable Crop step. cargo test -p deckcraft-engine --lib: 342 passed.

close_document activates whichever presentation takes the closed index,
so closing a non-active presentation can still change the active one; the
crop drag only ended when the active index itself was closed. It now works
out which presentation will be active after removal and ends the drag on
the original when that differs. document_changed() also drops any leftover
Drag::Crop whenever the active presentation changed.

Fixed in a9f2598. Before removing, close_document now works out which document will be active afterwards and calls end_crop_drag() when its uid differs from the current one, so closing a non-active index that changes the active document also finishes the drag on the original. As a fallback, document_changed() drops any leftover Drag::Crop when the active uid changed. The new test a_crop_drag_ends_when_closing_another_presentation_changes_the_active_one covers both cases: closing B in [A, B, C] ends the drag, and closing C in [A, C] lets it continue. cargo test -p deckcraft-engine --lib: 343 passed.

Reject crop sums that remove the visible image.

The keepFrame: true branch clamps crop values independently but does not validate their sums. Values such as [0.6, 0.0, 0.6, 0.0] satisfy the parameter shape and can be stored, but they leave no visible image width. image_rect then returns None, so crop geometry commands skip the picture and crop handles cannot be derived. The renderer still renders the shape with a 1e-6 visible-width fallback, producing degenerate image geometry.

Apply the same 0.99 sum check used by the default crop path after clamping.

Frame, image-handle, and pan drags can produce finite crop values outside [-10.0, 0.99]. Rendering clamps these values, but crop hit testing reads the stored values without clamping. +        self.end_crop_drag();
         self.tool.kind = kind;
         self.tool.drag = None;
         self.tool.preview = None;

End the crop drag before restoring history.

edit.undo and edit.redo clear st.interaction before settle_crop(). settle_crop() does not clear Session.tool.drag, so Drag::Crop remains active.

A later pointer drag can still modify the restored document. Pointer release then calls commit(), but the interaction was already cleared, so the crop change has no separate undo entry. Undo or redo can therefore cross the active crop gesture's undo boundary.

Call end_crop_drag() before obtaining the document state. This commits the active crop gesture as one Crop history entry, then lets undo or redo operate on that entry.

Suggested fix
 fn restore(s: &mut Session, redo: bool) -> Result<Value> {
+    s.end_crop_drag();
     let st = s.doc_mut()?;

🟡 Minor · Restrict crop mode to one selected picture. · crop.rs:25-31

crates/engine/src/cmd/crop.rs:25-31
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Restrict crop mode to one selected picture.

When the selection contains multiple shapes and at least one picture, has_picture enables picture.cropMode. The ribbon and canvas then invoke the command, but crop_target rejects the selection because it accepts only [one]. Crop mode does not start. Use a single-picture predicate for picture.cropMode without changing the multi-picture predicates used by the other crop commands.
