Found while testing crates/format/src/lib.rs:548 (outline_to_slides) and :628 (slides_to_outline) (no existing issue): Outline export/import merges a slide with an empty title into the previous slide.

Cause

slides_to_outline writes a slide with an empty title as a blank line followed by tab-indented body lines. outline_to_slides skipped every blank line, so no slide was started and the body lines were appended to the previous slide.

Fix

outline_to_slides now remembers when the line just before was blank. If a tab-indented line follows such a blank line, it starts a new slide with an empty title and that line as its first body paragraph.

Verified

  • Regression test tests::outline_roundtrip_keeps_slide_with_empty_title: fails on main without the fix and passes with it (cargo test -p deckcraft-format outline_roundtrip_keeps_slide_with_empty_title).
  • cargo xtask ci passes except tests::east_asian_vertical_text_stands_ideographs_upright, which also fails on main without this change.

Not changed

The exporter and markdown_to_slides are unchanged. A hand-typed blank line directly before a tab-indented line in a plain outline now also starts an empty-title slide, because it looks the same as an exported empty title. Blank lines elsewhere are still ignored. An empty-title slide with no body is still dropped on import, because its blank line is indistinguishable from a separator.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Preserved slides with empty titles and body text when exporting and re-importing presentations. Blank lines before tab-indented content now retain that content in an empty-title slide, including its nesting level. Other blank lines continue to be skipped, and indented content continues to append to the current slide when one exists.

Walkthrough

The outline parser now starts an empty-title slide when a tab-indented line follows a blank line. A test checks that exporting and re-importing the outline preserves the slide count and content.

Importing a hand-typed or pasted outline that has a blank line inside a slide's body will now split that body into a separate untitled slide. This changes the existing import behavior for ordinary outlines. Make empty-title export unambiguous and keep ordinary blank lines inert before merging, or explicitly accept the behavior change.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in crates/format/src/lib.rs: outline_to_slides now records a blank line instead of simply discarding it, while still skipping the blank itself.
  • observed — Modified behavior in crates/format/src/lib.rs: When a tab-indented line follows a blank line, outline_to_slides creates an empty-title slide with that line as its first body paragraph, using the indentation level minus one, capped at 8. Previously, this path did not create a slide.
  • observed — Modified behavior in crates/format/src/tests.rs: Added a test that creates two slides from an outline, empties the second slide’s title placeholder, then checks that an outline export and re-import retain two slides and reproduce the same outline.

I read the whole diff (crates/format/src/lib.rs, +18) and the callers of outline_to_slides. Hosted CI (gates (ubuntu-latest)) is green on this exact head, and the PR text is open about the trade-off below, which is why I'm leaving this as a comment, not an approval, because of the compatibility risk below.

What it does (checked). slides_to_outline writes an empty-title slide as an empty line followed by tab-indented body lines (s.title() is "", then out.push('\n'), then \t plus the text). outline_to_slides skipped every blank line, so those body lines were appended to the previous slide. Now it remembers a blank line, and a tab-indented line right after one starts a new slide with an empty title and that line as its first bullet at level - 1. The round-trip test (build A / x, B / y, empty slide 2's title, export, re-import, export again) is the right shape and passes in CI.

The compatibility risk (hold for a maintainer). The rule is "a blank line, then a line that starts with a tab", which an exported empty title and a hand-written outline can both produce, and the PR says so. It changes what existing text does on import, in places a user can reach on this head:

  • crates/engine/src/cmd/slide.rs:623 (Insert ▸ Slides from Outline) and crates/engine/src/cmd/file.rs:171 pass user text straight in. Intro\n\tPoint one\n\n\tPoint two is one slide with two bullets on main (the blank line is ignored); after this PR it is two slides, the second with an empty title.
  • markdown_to_slides hands a file with no headings to outline_to_slides (line 616). A loose Markdown list with tab-indented sub-items after a blank line (- A, blank, \t- sub) is common, and it would now make an extra empty-title slide per sub-list.
  • A blank line before the first slide's first indented line (\n\tfoo) used to be dropped (no slide yet) and now creates an empty-title slide.

On the other side, a slide with an empty title and no body is still lost on round-trip, as the PR says, so the fix is partial whichever way it goes.

Question: can the export be made unambiguous? The cleaner fix is on the export side: slides_to_outline would write an empty title as something a hand-written outline doesn't produce by accident, and import would read only that. I haven't worked out what that marker should be (a lone - is kept as text today, because the bullet prefix needs a following space, so it would need its own rule and test). That is the maintainers' format decision. Whatever is chosen, please add tests for the two hand-written inputs above, so the intended behaviour is written down.

holds: the import rule for hand-written outlines and loose Markdown lists; the empty-title-no-body case.

Thanks. This makes a blank line before an indented line meaningful, which changes how hand-typed or pasted outlines import (Title\n\tA\n\n\tB would gain an empty slide). Could you fix it on the export side instead (never emit a bare empty title line for an untitled slide with a body) so ordinary outlines import as before, and add a test that Title\n\tA\n\n\tB still imports as one slide? Note #1075 touches the same round trip; its test currently asserts a titleless slide disappears, so the two need to agree.

Checked against RTF written by real PowerPoint (Microsoft Office 16, on Windows).

What ran:

  • Built a 6-slide deck through PowerPoint COM, with slide 5 having an empty title and the body orphan body, and saved it with SaveAs(..., ppSaveAsRTF).
  • Ran that file through deckcraft_format::rtf::rtf_to_outline and then outline_to_slides, in a scratch build of crates/format. This branch is based before rtf.rs existed and conflicts with current main in lib.rs, so I applied this PR's code change in outline_to_slides (not its tests) onto current main.

Result: no difference with this change.

  • PowerPoint writes the empty title as a paragraph with no text (\pard ... {\f3 \par }), and rtf_to_outline currently emits no blank line for it. The outline it produces is ...Empty-next\n\tbody 4\n\tsecond 4\n\torphan body\nLast..., so orphan body is still appended to the previous slide, and 5 slides come out of 6, both on main and with this PR.
  • So the fix applies to the plain-text export (blank line, then tab-indented line), but it does not cover an empty-title slide coming from a PowerPoint RTF, because that blank line never reaches outline_to_slides. If the intent is to cover RTF too, rtf_to_outline would need to keep that empty paragraph as a blank line.

Not checked: the PR's own unit tests and the app UI.

I also ran the plain-text case in PowerPoint: Slides.InsertFromFile on the text A, <tab>x, a blank line, <tab>y, B, <tab>z gives 2 slides, A (body x, y) and B (body z). PowerPoint skips the blank line and appends y to slide A, which is what DeckCraft does on main today. With this PR, DeckCraft would instead make a third slide with an empty title for y, so this change differs from what PowerPoint does for that file.

Preserve blank separators within a slide.

For Title\n\tA\n\n\tB, this branch creates a second, empty-title slide instead of keeping B in Title’s body. The same blank-line sequence also represents an exported empty-title slide, so the parser cannot distinguish the two cases. Encode empty titles unambiguously on export, and keep ordinary blank lines inert on import. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Friendly ping: the earlier request is still open. Please move the fix to the export side (don't write a bare empty title line for an untitled slide with a body) and add the Title\n\tA\n\n\tB stays-one-slide test. #1446 already keeps empty titles on the RTF path.

ReviewerA — source-read COMMENT (not an approval)

I read the visible hunks: when importing an outline, a tab-indented line after a blank line keeps the slide even if the title is empty (the shape an export produces). It's a heuristic on raw.starts_with('\t') only; spaces-indented outlines still lose the body. Please also handle the space-indented form or say why not, and add the exported-outline round-trip test.

I ran nothing and have no exact-head CI result for this PR, so this is not an approval. Where a diff was long I read its code hunks rather than every generated or documentation line.
