4.2.5 added tests/test_build_version.py, which reads build.rs and tools/version.py off the project root (and spins up a scratch git repo) to exercise the cargo/meson version-derivation tooling itself. CIBW_TEST_SOURCES only stages tests/docs, so those files are never copied into the sandbox and every parametrization of the file errors with "No such file or directory" on all three interpreters (cp310, cp314t, cp315t) — not an interpreter-matrix issue. The test verifies source-tree build machinery our workflow deliberately bypasses (PIPDEPTREE_VERSION overrides it), not the installed wheel, so it is ignored rather than staged.
