The request

Slack #labware-requests, requester Slack user U0APRMP9RH8, 2026-10-30 (permalink):

S-bio U-bottom 384 well plate Cat no. MS-9384U

Closes #40

Decisions needed

  1. MS-9384U vs MS-9384UZ. The request names MS-9384U. S-Bio's own documents list only MS-9384UZ; FUJIFILM Wako lists MS-9384U (Europe/Asia) and MS-9384UZ (US) both as "PrimeSurface 384U Plate". This file treats them as one mould, uses the MS-9384UZ row of S-Bio's dimension table and names MS-9384UZ in notes. Is that right, and which code is on the requester's box?
  2. Square opening. S-Bio's table gives a well "diameter" of 3.3 mm (top) / 2.92 mm (bottom). The product photo shows square, round-cornered openings on the 384-well PrimeSurface plates, and the published volume agrees with a square (a 3.3 mm square tapering to a 2.92 mm circle over 12 mm holds ≈106 µL, the brochure maximum; a 3.3 mm circle would hold ≈91 µL). The file records top_shape: square, diameter_top 3.3 mm (side), shape: circle, diameter 2.92 mm. A look at a plate in hand would settle it.

Sources used

  • Controlling: S-BIO PrimeSurface dimensions to support instrument setup, one-page table, PDF dated 2017-08-22 and modified 2018-04-30, with no revision number. S-Bio publishes no dimensioned drawing for this plate.
  • PrimeSurface brochure: MS-9384UZ, clear, round bottom, maximum well volume 106 µL, individually packed, 20 per case.
  • FUJIFILM Wako listings for MS-9384U and MS-9384UZ (U bottom, 0.1 mL, radiation sterilized).
  • Trap: Sumitomo Bakelite's Japanese spec pages (sumibe.co.jp) that S-Bio links now return 404.

Judgement calls

  • diameter = 2.92 mm is the table's "bottom" value and diameter_top = 3.3 mm its "top" value. The opening is taken as square (see Decisions needed).
  • S-Bio's "Well Bottom Elevation" 2.4 mm is the top of the floor: 2.4 = 1.6 ("Distance to Bottom of Plate") + 0.8 ("Well Bottom Thickness"), and 14.4 plate height − 12 depth = 2.4. So floor_height 2.4 mm, bottom_elevation 1.6 mm, bottom_thickness 0.8 mm.
  • working_volume_max is the table's 100 µL well volume; the brochure's 106 µL maximum is in notes.
  • skirt_height 2.5 mm is the table's "Flange or Skirt Height". There is no drawing, so the skirt outline and flange width are not recorded and nothing was scaled.
  • Not published, so left out: plastic (no S-Bio document read names it), lid and height with lid, wall thickness, U-bottom radius (the bottom is taken as a hemisphere), and minimum working volume.

Testing

  • pytest -q: 184 passed.
  • lint (ruff 0.15.22 check + format --check, ty 0.0.74 via pixi, as in lint.yml): all checks passed.
  • Geometry check:
