The Unisys LZW patents expired worldwide by mid-2004 (US: June 20, 2003; EU/JP/CA: 2004). LZW has been default-on in configure since the 2003 timestamp branch took effect, but the --enable-lzw help text still claimed "(def: no)" -- fixed. Dropped the "GIF is a registered trademark of Compuserve" warning: CompuServe ceased to exist as an independent entity in 1998 when it was absorbed into AOL, and the original legal concern around GIF was always the underlying Unisys LZW patent (now long expired) rather than the format name itself. Both options support --disable-gif / --disable-lzw to opt out. Build instructions now no longer suggest --enable-gif --enable-lzw closes pts#65
