fix(web): typing a draft in one tab no longer erases drafts written in another tab - #32728
With T3 Code open in two browser tabs, an unsent draft typed in one tab is erased as soon as the other tab saves a draft. Each tab's debounced write (300 ms after typing) replaced the shared t3code:composer-drafts:v1 entry with only that tab's own drafts, and tabs never read each other's writes. The loss sticks once the erasing tab is the last to write, for example when a tab reloads or closes.
Steps: open two tabs on one server. In tab B, type a draft in project Beta's new thread. In tab A, opened earlier, type a draft in project Alpha's new thread. Open a third tab: Beta's draft is gone.
Change
The fix stays in the composer draft store's persist adapter (composerDraftStore.ts):
Merge at write time. Each stored entry (thread draft, draft thread, project mapping, sticky model field) keeps a baseline of what this tab last synced. A write reads storage, overlays only the entries this tab changed or removed, and writes once. Other entries keep what storage holds, so other tabs' drafts survive and a draft cleared or sent in one tab is not written back by another. A tab that changed nothing writes nothing, and the baseline moves only after setItem succeeds.
Adopt other tabs' changes. A storage listener (localStorage only, this key or clear()) reads current storage rather than event.newValue, which can predate this tab's own later write. It takes in entries another tab changed and this tab did not, in one setState, without a full rehydrate. Adopted drafts keep this tab's File handles and images not yet saved, in their current order.
Storage from an older version is migrated before merging. Storage from a newer build, or unreadable storage, is not adopted, and a write replaces it with this tab's state, as before.
createDeferredStorage (lib/storage.ts), whose only caller is this store, now takes a write(name, value) callback instead of serialize, so the read, merge, write and baseline update happen in one function.
Undo after a deferred change. When a tab skips another tab's change because its own entry is being edited, and the edit is then undone back to the baseline, the tab now applies the held-back draft or deletion instead of keeping the stale one.
Draft thread kept while it has unsaved changes. When another tab discards a draft thread while this tab still holds an unwritten edit or an image not yet saved, this tab keeps the draft thread and writes it back with its draft, instead of dropping the thread and leaving the draft where no screen can open it.
The snap-shot coordinator browser tests now reset the draft store through its persist API between tests, since the store remembers what it last wrote.
Entries are compared with a small key-order-independent JSON equality. Plain JSON-string comparison misreads a draft thread rebuilt in a different key order as a local edit.
Scope and approval
This fixes one bug, unsent drafts lost across tabs, in one store. The code change is the composer draft store's persist adapter plus a one-callback change to createDeferredStorage, whose only caller is that store; about a third of the added lines are the tests. It uses the same write-time merge and storage listener as the open PRs for the prompt stash (#24468) and client settings (#28661), and does not touch those stores.
Clients: web (local npx t3 and app.t3.codes). Desktop runs one app window, so it never hit this; it shares the code. Mobile has a separate draft store. No contract, server or provider change.
Known limits: if two tabs edit the same draft between syncs, the tab that writes last wins for that draft; a draft one tab discards while another is still typing in it comes back. localStorage has no cross-tab transaction, so when two tabs write within the moment it takes one tab's write to reach the other, the later write can still drop the earlier tab's change, even to a different draft, and the earlier tab then takes that loss in. Closing that needs a transactional store such as IndexedDB. A tab still running an older build (no merge) overwrites storage with its own drafts, as today, and newer tabs then take that state in, dropping drafts the old tab never saw.
Verification
vp test run src/composerDraftStore.test.ts: 82 passed (two of them cover the undo case). Four new tests in the existing persistence describe run two or three store instances over one shared storage, with no timers:
A tab's draft survives another tab's write made before that tab saw the change; a stale newValue does not delete a draft; a draft one tab cleared is not restored; clear() empties memory; sticky model picks are adopted; no echo write.
An edit undone before the write does not overwrite the other tab's edit; storage from a newer build is not adopted.
A draft thread rebuilt in a different key order is not treated as a local edit.
A draft thread survives another tab discarding it while this tab holds an image not yet saved or an unwritten prompt; a reopened tab has the thread, the image and the prompt.
On the base store the first test fails because tab B's draft is erased. It also fails with the write-time merge removed or with the listener trusting newValue; the third fails with JSON-string comparison; the fourth fails when adoption drops the draft thread of a draft the tab keeps.
vp run check:changed: passes.
Real web run of main and this branch, each on an isolated dev server with two synthetic projects, in two tabs of one browser profile (checked to share localStorage and receive storage events). Tab B types a draft in Beta's new thread, then tab A, already open, types one in Alpha's. After tab A's write, storage on main holds only tab A's draft; on this branch it holds both. A third tab then opens Beta's new thread.
Before (main): the fresh tab lists only tab A's draft, and Beta's composer is empty.
After (this PR): the fresh tab lists both drafts, and Beta's composer still holds tab B's draft.
Discarding a draft in one tab while the other is still typing in it, same browser, both tabs on this branch's previous head and on this head. Tab A types one character every 100 ms, so its write stays pending, while tab B clicks Discard draft on the same draft.
Before (previous head): tab A is moved off the draft after a few characters, and storage keeps its text without the draft thread, so no screen can open it.
After: tab A keeps the draft and everything typed; both are written back.
Not checked in a browser: the unsaved-image case, since its window is the image's serialization; test 4 covers it. No repo-wide checks.

…n another tab
Each tab's debounced composer-draft write serialized only its own drafts over
the shared localStorage key, so a draft saved in one tab was erased as soon as
another tab saved. Now the debounced write reads storage, replaces only the
entries this tab changed since its last sync, and skips the write when it
changed nothing. Entries are one per record key and one per other field, built
from whatever the persisted state holds, and compared as JSON values so key
order never reads as an edit.
A storage listener reads current storage (never the event's newValue) and
adopts entries that storage changed and this tab did not, keeping File
handles, decoded images and images not yet persisted. createDeferredStorage
now takes a write callback, so the read, merge, write and baseline update run
in one function.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This change merges browser-local draft updates across tabs instead of replacing other tabs' drafts, while preserving local attachment handles. Explanation
The description follows the repository template closely and is substantively complete. It has a Problem section with clear reproduction steps, a Change section that explains the write-time merge, the storage listener, the createDeferredStorage signature change, the undo case, and the draft-thread retention case, and a Scope and approval section that names the single bug, the affected files, the affected clients, and known limits. Verification is detailed: it lists the test command and results, names four new tests with their intent, records mutation-style checks, reports a real two-tab web run, and includes before/after screenshots for the UI behavior. It does not link a triaged bug issue or maintainer approval comment in the Scope and approval section, which the template asks for, and it does not explicitly state the model and harness in the template's closing comment format, although it does name the tools used in the final line. The Scope and approval section also argues for an exemption without a linked issue, which the template requires to be explained, and it does explain why. Those gaps are minor relative to the overall completeness.

The cross-tab draft change keeps a module-level record of what the store last

Make the cross-tab merge atomic
If two tabs flush different drafts concurrently, both can read the same storage value before either writes. The later write can then erase the other draft, which is missing on reload. This also affects different drafts, not just the documented last-write-wins case for the same draft. Use an atomic cross-tab update protocol for the read–merge–write sequence.

Keep the draft session while it has an unsaved image
If another tab discards a draft while image serialization is pending, adoption can delete the session even though it retains the image. The draft then disappears from the route, and unmounting can cancel serialization. The image remains inaccessible and can be lost on reload. Preserve the session when its draft contains a locally unsaved image.

When another tab discarded a draft thread while this tab still held an
unwritten edit or an image not yet saved, adoption removed the thread but
kept the draft. The route lost its draft thread, the composer unmounted,
and the draft was stored without its thread or, with only the image, lost.
Adoption now keeps a draft thread whose draft this tab keeps, and drops it
from the baseline so the next write puts the thread back.

Re "Make the cross-tab merge atomic" in this review: the window is real, but localStorage gives no way to close it here, so this PR discloses it and doesn't build a lock.
Each tab's read, merge and write runs synchronously in one task (writeComposerDrafts has no await between getItem and setItem). The gap is how long one tab's write takes to reach another tab's view of storage. Chromium serves getItem from a per-process cache that other tabs' writes reach over async IPC, and Firefox gives each task its own snapshot. The HTML spec tells authors to assume no locking.
Web Locks doesn't close it. navigator.locks is missing when T3 is opened over plain HTTP on a LAN or tailnet, and in Chromium the lock grant and the storage update travel separately, so a read under the lock can still be stale.
A real fix needs a transactional store, such as IndexedDB with one readwrite transaction per write, which is a larger change than this fix.
On main, every write from either tab replaces the other tab's drafts. This PR narrows that to two writes landing within that propagation delay. I've added that case, different drafts included, to Known limits.
Re "Keep the draft session while it has an unsaved image" in this review: confirmed and fixed in 7dc1e2b. Images weren't the only trigger: an edit still waiting on the 300 ms write hit the same split.
When another tab discarded a draft thread, adoption removed the thread but kept a draft this tab still held, either as an unwritten edit or with an unsaved image. The route then redirected and the composer unmounted. The draft was stored without its thread, and an image-only draft was lost. Adoption now keeps a draft thread whose draft this tab still holds, and drops it from the sync baseline so the next write puts the thread back with its draft.
The new test in composerDraftStore.test.ts covers an unsaved image and an unwritten prompt and fails on the previous head. The PR body has before and after captures of the typing case in a real browser.

Problem
With T3 Code open in two browser tabs, an unsent draft typed in one tab is erased as soon as the other tab saves a draft. Each tab's debounced write (300 ms after typing) replaced the shared
t3code:composer-drafts:v1entry with only that tab's own drafts, and tabs never read each other's writes. The loss sticks once the erasing tab is the last to write, for example when a tab reloads or closes.Steps: open two tabs on one server. In tab B, type a draft in project Beta's new thread. In tab A, opened earlier, type a draft in project Alpha's new thread. Open a third tab: Beta's draft is gone.
Change
The fix stays in the composer draft store's persist adapter (
composerDraftStore.ts):setItemsucceeds.storagelistener (localStorage only, this key orclear()) reads current storage rather thanevent.newValue, which can predate this tab's own later write. It takes in entries another tab changed and this tab did not, in onesetState, without a full rehydrate. Adopted drafts keep this tab'sFilehandles and images not yet saved, in their current order.createDeferredStorage(lib/storage.ts), whose only caller is this store, now takes awrite(name, value)callback instead ofserialize, so the read, merge, write and baseline update happen in one function.Entries are compared with a small key-order-independent JSON equality. Plain JSON-string comparison misreads a draft thread rebuilt in a different key order as a local edit.
Scope and approval
This fixes one bug, unsent drafts lost across tabs, in one store. The code change is the composer draft store's persist adapter plus a one-callback change to
createDeferredStorage, whose only caller is that store; about a third of the added lines are the tests. It uses the same write-time merge andstoragelistener as the open PRs for the prompt stash (#24468) and client settings (#28661), and does not touch those stores.Clients: web (local
npx t3and app.t3.codes). Desktop runs one app window, so it never hit this; it shares the code. Mobile has a separate draft store. No contract, server or provider change.Known limits: if two tabs edit the same draft between syncs, the tab that writes last wins for that draft; a draft one tab discards while another is still typing in it comes back. localStorage has no cross-tab transaction, so when two tabs write within the moment it takes one tab's write to reach the other, the later write can still drop the earlier tab's change, even to a different draft, and the earlier tab then takes that loss in. Closing that needs a transactional store such as IndexedDB. A tab still running an older build (no merge) overwrites storage with its own drafts, as today, and newer tabs then take that state in, dropping drafts the old tab never saw.
