fix(server): deleted threads release their stored history - #32378
Deleting a thread is a soft delete. thread.deleted sets deleted_at on the thread row, and every projection row the thread owns stays in statev2.sqlite for good: turn items and their positions, nodes, messages, runs, attempts, provider turns, checkpoints, subagents and the rest. Reads filter them out, so the data can never be shown again, but it still takes space and t3 doctor --fix has nothing to reclaim. #17845 has row counts from several installs.
On my install (macOS, 0.1.8-nightly.20261107.4301), I deleted 3,475 threads and t3 doctor --dry-run still reported 0 KiB reclaimable. Removing those threads' projection rows by hand and then running t3 doctor --fix took the file from 10.97 GiB to 4.12 GiB. This PR makes the server do that itself.
Change
ProjectionMaintenance.pruneEventStore already prunes events older than RETAINED_EVENT_HISTORY (#29806). It now also purges the projection content of threads deleted longer ago than that same window:
What it keeps. The thread row stays as the tombstone, because verification, storage cleanup, guest share and continuation all read only that row's deletedAt. context_transfers stays because a live thread can be its other endpoint. A provider session is removed only when no surviving thread is bound to it.
Forks. A run-fork reads inherited history from its source's runs and turn items. A deleted thread is skipped while any live fork, or any fork deleted within the window, inherits from it, including through chains of deleted middle links.
Pacing. Each statement deletes at most 500 rows by rowid and commits on its own, and yieldNow plus betweenPages run between batches. So a thread with 100k messages never holds the writer for one long transaction. The message FTS rows go with their messages through the existing delete trigger.
Window. It uses RETAINED_EVENT_HISTORY (1 day). There is no restore event, and the events a thread could be replayed from are already pruned after that window.
Drift guard. The purged tables are one exported constant, THREAD_CONTENT_TABLES. A test fails when a new orchestration_v2_projection_* table with a thread_id column isn't classified as purged or kept.
The maintenance result gains purgedProjectionRowCount, and DatabaseStorage logs a pass that only purged.
Scope and approval
Fixes#17845. It also covers the "prune for deleted threads" part of #28903. It builds on the maintainer decision in #29806 that applied projections are the source of truth, and it doesn't overlap #28144, which prunes event history. If the direction needs explicit approval first, I'm happy to wait on the issue.
Verification
New ProjectionMaintenance.test.ts cases, all passing:
A thread deleted beyond the window is purged: items, positions, messages and FTS matches go to 0, and the thread row stays.
A thread deleted within the window is kept until the clock moves past it.
A live thread's projection is identical before and after.
A deleted root → deleted middle → live run-fork chain keeps its content, while an unrelated deleted thread is purged. This test fails when the fork filter is removed.
A thread with 1,200 rows is purged in bounded batches, with betweenPages called between them.
A second run reports 0.
The drift guard described above.
vp test run apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ProjectionMaintenance.test.ts: 7/7 pass. vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, typecheck and tests pass.
Manual: the 10.97 → 4.12 GiB result above came from the same table set run as a one-off SQL purge on a real database. T3 started cleanly afterwards, and the thread list and thread reads worked. I haven't run this new code path against that database.

Deleting a thread only set deleted_at, so its runs, messages, turn items and
other projection rows stayed in SQLite forever and `t3 doctor --fix` had
nothing to reclaim. Background compaction now purges that content once a
thread has been deleted for longer than the retained event history. The thread
row stays as the tombstone.

Deleted threads that a surviving run-fork inherits history from, directly or
through a chain of forks, keep their content. Purging deletes at most 500 rows
per statement and yields between batches, so one very large thread no longer
holds the writer.

A live run-fork created from a deleted source while this purge is running loses the source's runs and turn items, truncating its inherited history. threadIds is selected before the yields and batched deletes, so a fork committed afterward is not reflected in the exclusion; revalidate dependencies atomically with deletion and coordinate with fork creation so it cannot commit against a source being purged.

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — Background maintenance will permanently purge content from threads deleted for at least one day, changing default retention behavior. Human confirmation of that policy is required; the supplied concurrency finding also identifies potential loss of live forks’ inherited history.

Maintenance now purges projection content for deleted threads after the retention period. It retains tombstones and content inherited by live forks. The maintenance result includes the number of purged projection rows, and compaction logging accounts for that count.

Summary
Select and purge eligible thread content apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ProjectionMaintenance.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ProjectionMaintenance.test.ts
Maintenance selects deleted threads past the one-day retention cutoff and excludes threads whose history is inherited by non-side-chat run forks. It deletes eligible projection content in batches of 500, retains tombstones, and removes provider sessions only when no thread outside the selected batch uses them. Tests cover retention timing, inherited history, projection-table coverage, and large batches.
Return and log purge counts apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ProjectionMaintenance.ts, apps/server/src/persistence/DatabaseStorage.ts, apps/server/src/persistence/DatabaseStorage.test.ts
pruneEventStore returns purgedProjectionRowCount. Compaction logging now includes projection-row deletions, and the empty compaction result sets the count to zero.
pingdotgg/t3code#30587 — The change removes projection content for old deleted threads, but does not purge event history or address archived threads.
pingdotgg/t3code#28903 — The change removes some deleted-thread projection rows, but does not implement broader event-retention or compaction behavior.

The cleanup of deleted-thread history looks sound. The batching test is weak, so a future change could break batching without failing the test. This is safe to merge with a small test follow-up.

Explanation
[#17845] The PR purges eligible projection rows in batches, keeps a thread tombstone, and tests messages, turn items, FTS, forks, and batching. It does not clear every deleted thread's history. Live run-forks can retain a deleted ancestor's full content indefinitely. The existing event pruner also keeps thread.created, running run.updated events, and version-1 events unless their legacy transcript was imported. The new tests do not verify removal of deleted-thread event history.

Avoid repeating content deletes for purged tombstones.
Each pass runs 32 statements per page of already-purged threads. This work grows with the number of tombstones and can extend compaction. Consider tracking completed content purges while preserving later cleanup of shared provider sessions.

The batches >= 3 assertion cannot fail, so it does not test batching.
betweenPages runs once per deleteBatches iteration for every table. It also runs in pruneImportedLegacyHistory. Without any batching, a single pass already calls it about 18 times. The test therefore passes even if ROW_BATCH_SIZE is set to a huge value or the loop never repeats. Only the positions === 0 assertion catches a real regression, and it also passes when batching is broken.
Tie the expected count to the batch structure instead. The 1,201 position rows need 3 iterations. Every other table, the sessions statement, and the bindings statement need 1 each. The legacy prune loops call it twice.
🧪 Proposed assertion
- assert.isAtLeast(batches, 3);+ // legacy loops (2) + one iteration per table and session/binding statement + 2 extra position batches+ assert.isAtLeast(batches, 2 + ProjectionMaintenance.THREAD_CONTENT_TABLES.length + 2 + 2);
As per path instructions, hold changed tests to docs/internals/testing.md: tests should "catch a real regression", and this assertion cannot.

Preserve sources of pending merge-back transfers
After merging a fork/side chat back, a user can delete the source and leave the parent idle beyond the one-day retention window. This filter then purges the source despite the parent's still-pending merge_back transfer. Orchestrator.ts:7305–7346 resolves that transfer's source run and provider thread on the next message, so it now fails with has no resolvable source run; starting a fresh session is also rejected while the transfer is pending. Retaining the transfer row alone is insufficient: exclude sources—and their required ancestors—of pending transfers to surviving threads from the purge.
