fix(web): checking for updates also checks provider versions - #32121
Clicking "Check for updates" in the desktop sidebar or in Settings > About checks only the desktop app. If a new Codex or Claude CLI was released since the server last checked, it doesn't show up until the server's one-hour latest-version cache expires. That happens even though the same sidebar button already lists provider updates and offers to install them.
Change
Both buttons call only desktopBridge.checkForUpdate(), which runs Electron's auto-updater. The server caches each provider's latest version for an hour (ProviderLatestVersions, FOUND_TTL). The only client refresh that clears that cache is server.refreshProviders with refreshModels: true.
Now:
A new useCheckProviderUpdates hook in ProviderUpdatesAction.tsx sends refreshProviders({ refreshModels: true }) to every connected environment where the user can manage providers. It uses the same scope check that already decides where provider updates are offered.
The sidebar update button and the Settings > About "Check for updates" button call it alongside the desktop check. Any update it finds appears through the existing Update Everything state.
This uses the same refresh as Settings > Providers > Refresh, so it also re-discovers models. I didn't add a narrower "check versions only" flag, because that would change the RPC contract for a small fix.
Not changed: web and mobile have no "Check for updates" button. The native app menu's "Check for Updates…" runs in the Electron main process and still checks only the app.
Scope and approval
This qualifies for the small, focused bug-fix exception in CONTRIBUTING.md. It makes the existing check also cover the provider updates the same button already shows, without adding a feature, changing product defaults, or altering contracts.
Verification
vp test run src/components/ProviderUpdatesAction.browser.test.tsx: 1/1 pass. I extended the existing manage-scope case so the check targets only the manageable environment and sends refreshModels: true. It fails on main (useCheckProviderUpdates is not a function).
Not yet checked in a real desktop build: clicking the button against a provider that's one version behind.

A failed provider refresh leaves provider versions stale without notifying the user, even though the update check appears to complete normally. checkProviderUpdates() uses reportFailure: false and resolves failures as result objects, but this call discards those results; inspect them and surface failures for the affected environments.

Fixed in 82c07b0: useCheckProviderUpdates now collects each environment's failed refresh (ignoring interruptions) and shows one "Could not check provider updates" toast that names each failed environment and its error. Both the sidebar and Settings > About get it, because it lives in the hook.
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Manual update checks now also refresh provider versions for connected, manageable environments without installing updates. The reported silent-refresh-failure finding remains subject to the separate blocking gate.

Walkthrough
The PR adds a provider-update check action for connected, manageable environments. Settings and sidebar update-check paths invoke it alongside the existing desktop update check.
Changes: Provider update checks
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Provider check action and validation apps/web/src/components/ProviderUpdatesAction.tsx, apps/web/src/components/ProviderUpdatesAction.browser.test.tsx
The hook refreshes connected, manageable environments with refreshModels: true. It handles refresh results and reuses an in-flight check. The browser test covers environment eligibility, refresh input, and toast behavior for interrupted and failed checks.
Settings and sidebar entry points apps/web/src/components/settings/SettingsPanels.tsx, apps/web/src/components/sidebar/SidebarUpdatePill.tsx
The settings fallback path and sidebar update-check flow start provider checks alongside the desktop update check. The sidebar tracks both checks and clears pending state after both settle.
Provider checks can still appear finished too early in Settings, and the sidebar can show update details while a provider check is running. These are bounded presentation issues; the change is mergeable with owner awareness.

Keep the update controls pending until both checks complete.
The sidebar clears isActionPending when bridge.checkForUpdate() settles, while checkProviderUpdates() can still be awaiting server.refreshProviders. The Settings button has the same gap and does not track the provider promise for its check branch. Track the combined operation in both controls, and clear the pending state only after the desktop check and all provider refreshes settle.

Fixed in 82c07b0: the sidebar now clears isActionPending only after both the app check and the provider refreshes settle (Promise.allSettled). Settings > About never tracked pending state for its check branch, so instead of adding new state there, the hook ignores repeat calls while a check is running. That stops a second click from starting another model rediscovery from either button.

@Yuruzuu Thanks for explaining the approach. The sidebar now waits for both checks.
In Settings > About, repeat calls reuse the hook’s in-flight provider check, but the button can become available before that check finishes. I understand you chose that behavior rather than tracking pending state there. That leaves the Settings part of the original finding open.
A focused test with a delayed provider refresh would verify the intended behavior.

Keep the check status visible until both checks finish.
If the app check finishes first, the icon and tooltip can return to idle while provider refreshes are still running. The control remains disabled. Track the combined check separately from other pending actions, and use it for the checking presentation, including in reduced-motion mode.

Fixed in 200d74a: the sidebar now tracks the provider check in its own isCheckingProviders state and treats it as checking. The icon, the tooltip, and the reduced-motion presentation stay in "Checking for updates…" until both the app check and the provider refreshes finish.

@Yuruzuu Thanks for the update. The icon now stays in the checking state while provider refreshes run, including with reduced motion.
One part remains: if the app check finds an update first, showUpdateDetails or runsEverything takes priority over the checking tooltip. Release notes can also replace the tooltip while the provider check is still running.
Please keep the checking tooltip visible in that case and add a focused test for a delayed provider check with an available app update, including reduced motion. The repository also requires a real-client check and a short video for timing changes.

Problem
Clicking "Check for updates" in the desktop sidebar or in Settings > About checks only the desktop app. If a new Codex or Claude CLI was released since the server last checked, it doesn't show up until the server's one-hour latest-version cache expires. That happens even though the same sidebar button already lists provider updates and offers to install them.
Change
Both buttons call only
desktopBridge.checkForUpdate(), which runs Electron's auto-updater. The server caches each provider's latest version for an hour (ProviderLatestVersions,FOUND_TTL). The only client refresh that clears that cache isserver.refreshProviderswithrefreshModels: true. Now:
useCheckProviderUpdateshook inProviderUpdatesAction.tsxsendsrefreshProviders({ refreshModels: true })to every connected environment where the user can manage providers. It uses the same scope check that already decides where provider updates are offered.
It fails onmain(useCheckProviderUpdates is not a function).Made with Claude Opus 5.5 via Claude Code in T3 Code.
