fix(pi): text generation errors show the HTTP status from Gemini and Mistral - #31934
When Pi text generation fails on a Gemini or Mistral model, the error says only Pi could not generate text: the model provider reported an error. It doesn't name the HTTP status, so a rate limit (429) looks the same as a bad key or an outage. For OpenAI and Anthropic models, the same failure already says the model provider returned HTTP 429.
#23741 added this detail by reading a leading status from Pi's errorMessage, which is the provider SDK's raw error text. Pi's Gemini and Mistral providers don't put the status first. These are the errorMessage values pi-ai 0.73.1 produces for a 429 (key shortened):
{"error":{"message":"Too many requests","code":429,"status":"Too Many Requests"}}
reported an error
mistral
Mistral API error (429): {"object":"error",…}
reported an error
openai
429 Rate limit reached sk-…
returned HTTP 429
anthropic
429 {"type":"error",…}
returned HTTP 429
Change
piTurnErrorDetail now also takes the status from the two other forms. It reads a status after Mistral's Mistral API error ( prefix, or from the code key of a Gemini {"error":{…}} body. A JSON string value can't contain an unescaped "code":, so message text inside the body can't supply the status.
As before, only the three-digit status reaches the error detail. The raw text, which can echo credentials, is still dropped. Leading-status messages are matched exactly as before.
Scope and approval
This is a very small, focused fix for an obvious bug, so it uses CONTRIBUTING's exception for those. #23741 established the intended behavior: a failed Pi text generation names the provider's HTTP status. That already works for providers whose SDK leads with the status. It fails for two of Pi's built-in providers only because their SDKs format the same information differently. The change is one regex in packages/provider-pi/src/server/textGeneration.ts.
I found no existing issue or PR. I searched open and closed PRs and issues for pi text generation error, piTurnErrorDetail, pi HTTP status, Mistral API error, pi provider error status, gemini error status, rate limit 429 pi, text generation HTTP status, and provider returned HTTP. The only open PR touching this file is #30195 (Pi OAuth token rotation), which doesn't change piTurnErrorDetail.
Verification
Windows 11, Node 26.12.1, base 202d5b5616.
Regression test. Extended reports Pi's turn error when the reply is empty in textGeneration.test.ts. It now also feeds a Gemini and a Mistral 429 errorMessage, each containing a fake secret, through a failed Pi turn. It expects returned HTTP 429. and checks that the secret doesn't appear. With main's matcher it fails, receiving the model provider reported an error. With this change all 6 tests in the file pass (vp test run src/server/textGeneration.test.ts in packages/provider-pi). The existing tests still pass. They cover the leading-status case and the test that raw text never reaches the error.
Real provider messages. I installed @mariozechner/pi-ai@0.73.1, the library Pi's providers come from. Then I called completeSimple for its first google, mistral, openai, and anthropic models, with baseUrl pointed at a local server that answers 429. The table above lists the errorMessage values it produced. I passed each one through main's matcher and through this branch's. On main, Google (both bodies) and Mistral fall back to the generic message. On this branch, all five give 429. OpenAI and Anthropic don't change.
Matching cost. An unterminated 1 MB {"error":{… input takes about 0.5 ms to reject.
Fast checks.vp run check:changed origin/main passed format, lint, both Knip checks, typechecks for 9 packages, and the tests beside the change.
Not checked: I didn't run the Pi CLI against real Gemini or Mistral accounts. The test above drives T3's text generation with a fake Pi RPC process, as the existing tests do. The errorMessage values come from the real provider code calling a local server.
Implemented and verified with Claude Opus 5.5 (claude-opus-5-5) in the Claude Code harness.
…Mistral
Pi's errorMessage is the provider SDK's raw error text, and only a leading
status was recognized. Pi's Gemini provider reports the response body as JSON
with the status in `error.code`, and its Mistral provider writes
"Mistral API error (429): ...", so both fell back to "the model provider
reported an error". Read the status from those two forms as well. Still only
the status reaches the error detail.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Pi text-generation errors now show HTTP status codes from Gemini and Mistral response formats. Raw provider error text remains excluded, keeping the change limited to sanitized error messages.

Walkthrough
Pi error handling now extracts HTTP 4xx and 5xx statuses from leading status text, Mistral error messages, and Gemini JSON error codes. Tests cover Gemini- and Mistral-shaped 429 errors and verify that the sample secret is excluded.

Extend the existing failed-turn status test.
The existing test already checks status reporting for a failed Pi turn. Add the Gemini and Mistral messages as cases there instead of creating a separate it.effect. As per coding guidelines, “Extend before you add. When an existing test or table covers the behavior, add a row or an assertion there. Write a new it only when no case fits.” The test path instruction also requires changed tests to follow these rules. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

@coderabbitai Agreed, AGENTS.md asks to extend before adding. Fixed in bedb555: the Gemini and Mistral cases now run inside the existing reports Pi's turn error when the reply is empty test, and the separate it.effect is gone. With main's matcher the test still fails, and on this branch all 6 tests pass. I updated the PR description to match.

@geezoria Thanks for the update. I verified that the existing test now includes the Gemini and Mistral cases and checks that the fake secret is excluded. I did not run the tests.

## What to test
- Proof for a bug fix depends on the bug. Logic, data, state, and protocol bugs get a failing test first (the fewest that fail on `main` for that reason, in an existing case of the module's test file where one fits), then the fix. Purely visual bugs (spacing, colour, alignment, a layout shift) get before/after captures as their proof and no test: do not add UI tests for nitpicks, and do not ask for one in review when a capture already shows it. A server-only fix with no visible surface ships the test plus a short runtime transcript.
