[FEATURE] Add Mistral Vibe support (native vibe-app-server) - #31881
The original PR targeted the V1 adapter contract, which #2829 (orchestration V2) deleted, and spoke ACP via vibe-acp. This rework lands on current main against the V2 adapter shape and talks to Mistral's own vibe-app-server JSON-RPC protocol directly (the same runtime the CLI TUI and vibe-acp are frontends to) — the native equivalent of how Codex is integrated via codex app-server.
What changed
New @t3tools/vibe-app-server package: newline-delimited JSON-RPC 2.0 stdio client for vibe-app-server with typed methods (initialize, session start/resume/read/list/delete/stop, turn enqueue/steer/interrupt, history, events, account, config, workspace trust + git checkouts, callbacks). Includes a live smoke test that runs when the binary is installed.
New @t3tools/provider-vibe package: VibeDriver (built-in driver) with an orchestration-v2 adapter, status probe, and text generation built on the app-server client.
Native experience
Checkouts: sessions start in the thread's checkout — session/start gets agentConfig.cwd = the thread worktree plus worktree: { kind: "existing", cwd }, and workspace/git/checkouts reports the repo/checkout state natively.
Limits: account/read billing budget (/v1/billing/budget) surfaces as native usageLimits on the provider snapshot (monthly window with usedPercent + resetsAt + pace indicator). Turn error code -31001 is classified as usage_limit in turn failures.
Models: config/read populates the model picker, with thinking levels exposed as a select option; model changes apply per session via config/model/write.
Trust: workspace/trust/status + workspace/trust/decision (and trustWorkspace on session start) replace the ACP _trust/* shim.
MCP Tools: Vibe agents get T3's MCP tools and instructions for full integration.
Timeline: Tool calls and reasoning are shown in the timeline, and streamed assistant text is properly concatenated.
Registered in built-in drivers, provider clients (labeled as "Vibe", listed under "Show more" in add-provider dialog, Mistral icon, Early Access badge, mistral-vibe hidden from the ACP Registry list), settings secrets, and managed-policy known drivers.
Testing
Unit tests for the protocol client (in-memory JSON-RPC peer), spawn/env/mode mapping, limits mapping, model mapping, and rate-limit classification.
Live smoke test against the real vibe-app-server binary (skipped when absent): initialize → ephemeral session in cwd → config + git checkouts + account read → delete.
pnpm typecheck, package tests, and lint pass for both new packages; contracts/server/web provider tests pass.
Reworks pingdotgg#4720 onto current main against the V2 adapter contract instead of
the deleted V1 adapter/ACP path: a new @t3tools/vibe-app-server package
speaks vibe-app-server's newline-delimited JSON-RPC protocol directly (like
codex-app-server), and a new @t3tools/provider-vibe package builds the
driver, orchestration-v2 adapter, status probe, and text generation on it.
- Sessions start in the thread's checkout (worktree: existing + cwd), with
workspace/git/checkouts reported natively
- account/read billing budget surfaces as native usageLimits on the provider
snapshot (monthly window + reset), and turn error -31001 maps to usage_limit
- config/read models and thinking levels populate the model picker
- registered as a built-in driver, provider client (Mistral icon, Early
Access), settings secrets, and managed-policy known drivers

The Vibe provider looks largely sound. A few edge cases should be checked before merge: multiple threads in one runtime, handlers that block the protocol reader, and truncated snapshots on very long threads. The file-access guard also lacks a focused regression test.

The decode helper and the session/turns/list item decoder add error.message to detail. These errors already keep the same error as cause. Schema decode messages can contain parts of the raw payload. protocol.ts Line 157 uses the same pattern. Use a fixed detail that names the method, and keep the parse error only in cause.
As per coding guidelines: "The message is fixed or built from those attributes, never from cause, cause.message, or a stringified defect. No detail field that copies cause.message."

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Report cancelled turns as cancelled, not as provider failures.
status === "cancelled" maps to terminalStatus = "failed". vibeTurnFailure always returns a value, because makeProviderFailure never returns undefined. As a result, the failure === undefined branch that maps to "cancelled" (Line 379) never runs. A cancelled turn therefore becomes status: "failed" with a provider_error, and the user sees an error.
Map "cancelled" directly, and narrow the return type of vibeTurnFailure:
Proposed fix
const terminalStatus =
- status === "failed" || status === "cancelled"- ? "failed"- : status === "interrupted"- ? "interrupted"- : "completed";+ status === "failed"+ ? "failed"+ : status === "cancelled"+ ? "cancelled"+ : status === "interrupted"+ ? "interrupted"+ : "completed";
Then emit terminalStatus directly in the non-failure branch.

Addressed the macroscope review (13 issues) in 1384e36:
adapter: turn/message/item projections now carry the current run's runId / runAttemptId / rootNodeId; history/entryUpdated applies its JSON patch to the stored entry before projecting; callback/call server requests are acked and surfaced as live runtime_request events (answered via callback/result); the event stream fails when the app-server process exits; thread_start rollback returns an error instead of an unchanged snapshot; the thinking option maps to reasoningEffort on session start and model writes
vibe-app-server: history/turns list use the page envelope; callback/result nests { callbackId, output } in result; pending requests are failed and new ones raced on termination; partial lines survive chunk boundaries; incoming messages go through PubSub (no unbounded retention)
status probe: the timeout now wraps the whole scoped probe incl. initialize, and probes start with trustWorkspace: false so they never mutate persisted trust
text generation: only assistant entries are parsed as output; non-completed terminal turns fail with the turn error
Typecheck, lint, knip and all package tests pass, including the live smoke test against the real vibe-app-server (which now also exercises the page envelope).
The PR fixes two logic bugs: a partial line lost between stdin chunks, and a pending request that never ends when the server stops. No test covers either one. Both can regress without any other test failing. Add them to this describe, so the existing in-memory stdio helper is reused.
it.effect("reassembles a response split across stdin chunks",()=>Effect.scoped(Effect.gen(function*(){const{ stdio, input, output }=yield*VibeClient.makeInMemoryStdio();constclient=yield*VibeClient.make(stdio);constcall=yield*Effect.forkScoped(client.accountRead("s1"));yield*Queue.take(output);constline=`${JSON.stringify({jsonrpc: "2.0",id: 1,result: {account: {status: "ready"}},})}\n`;yield*Queue.offer(input,encoder.encode(line.slice(0,20)));yield*Queue.offer(input,encoder.encode(line.slice(20)));constaccount=yield*Fiber.join(call);expect(account.status).toBe("ready");}),),);
Add a second case. End the input queue after a request is sent. Then assert that the request fails with code terminated.
As per coding guidelines: "Logic, data, state, and protocol bugs get a failing test first... in an existing case of the module's test file where one fits."

Resolved the 4 newest coderabbit items in 3a9c2eb: cancelled turns now emit terminal status cancelled (not failed); user_input callbacks keep their kind end to end instead of collapsing to permission; advertised client tools (filesystem/read, filesystem/write) now have real handlers serving the session checkout, and terminal is no longer advertised; probe/text-generation clients accept callback delivery and auto-decline instead of getting method_not_found, and no longer advertise client tools; the probe failure message is fixed text with the cause going to logs only. Resolved the 2 newest coderabbit items in 46938b9: rollback now follows history pagination via nextCursor until the target turn's input entry is found (not just the first 500 entries); app-server child processes get forceKillAfter on both spawn and the explicit kill, so a SIGTERM-ignoring server cannot block scope close or the request timeout. Typecheck, lint, and all package tests pass locally.
Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Remove the duplicate FileSystem acquisitions.
The adapter acquires FileSystem.FileSystem at Line 272 (outer scope). It acquires it again at Line 553 and Line 576. The outer makeVibeAdapterV2 already needs FileSystem. openSessionInner runs inside the outer scope, so it can reuse the Line 272 value.
The Line 576 yield* also runs inside onServerRequest. That function is already wrapped by Effect.provideService(..., fileSystem) at Lines 650-652. This makes both the inner acquisition and the extra wrapper redundant.
Use the outer fileSystem directly. Then remove the Line 553 and Line 576 declarations. Also remove the provideService(FileSystem...) wrapper at Lines 650-652 and at Lines 1076-1082.
Note that Line 553 shadows the outer fileSystem in the same function scope chain. The result is easy to misread.
Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Validate filePath before joining it with cwd.
Vibe supplies path. Absolute paths pass through unchanged. Relative paths are concatenated with cwd without normalization. A .. segment or an absolute path like /etc/passwd can read or write files outside the session checkout. The write handler can overwrite arbitrary files.
Resolve the path with Path.Path. Then reject any result that is not inside cwd. Also consider resolving symlinks with fileSystem.realPath.
🔒️ Proposed fix
- const absolute = filePath.startsWith("/") ? filePath : `${cwd}/${filePath}`;+ const absolute = path.resolve(cwd, filePath);+ const relative = path.relative(cwd, absolute);+ if (relative.startsWith("..") || path.isAbsolute(relative)) {+ return yield* new VibeAppServerError.VibeAppServerRequestError({+ method,+ code: "invalid_params",+ detail: "path is outside the session checkout",+ });+ }
This needs const path = yield* Path.Path; in the adapter scope. It also needs Path.Path in VibeAdapterV2Env.
Based on learnings: "validate/sanitize the path before joining it with a base/root directory", and flag concatenation without checking for ".." segments or absolute paths.

Resolved the latest CodeRabbit batch in ed7a28b8ff (+ a5d9354909):
Security (adapter.ts, clientTool paths):clientTool/readTextFile and clientTool/writeTextFile now resolve against the session checkout root and reject any path escaping it with invalid_params. Containment is verified against the filesystem-resolved path (realPath, falling back to the lexical path for targets that do not exist yet), so symlinks cannot bypass it.
Functional (adapter.ts, respondToRuntimeRequest): answer-only responses on user_input callbacks now deliver responseInput.answers through the vibe-app-server CallbackOutput user_input envelope instead of defaulting to cancel; explicit cancel/decline/approval decisions still map to cancel_turn/deny/approve*.
Data integrity (adapter.ts, snapshot/rollback): history reads follow nextCursor until all pages are fetched via a shared readAllHistoryEntries helper, reused by both readThreadSnapshot and rollbackThread, so snapshots are complete and rewind resolves old targets.
Typecheck, tests (16 passed), and lint are green on the pushed head.
Re: the two re-surfaced CodeRabbit comments — both were already fixed and their threads are resolved:
discussion_r4490535230 (status.ts probe timeout): fixed in 3a9c2eba74 — the timeout is applied outside Effect.scoped (packages/provider-vibe/src/server/status.ts:163 pipes into Effect.timeoutOption(PROBE_TIMEOUT_MS) at :200), so it covers spawn, initialize, and the use callback.
discussion_r4490535297 (protocol.ts dropped partial lines): fixed in 46938b9399 — remainder lives at protocol scope (packages/vibe-app-server/src/protocol.ts:250), outside the per-chunk callback, so JSON-RPC lines split across stdin chunks are reassembled rather than dropped.
Re: the two re-surfaced major comments — both already fixed and their threads resolved:
discussion_r4490857977 (rollback target beyond first history page): fixed in a5d9354909 — rollbackThread now uses the shared readAllHistoryEntries helper, which follows nextCursor until history is exhausted, so rewind targets outside the first page are found.
discussion_r4490857991 (unbounded kill wait): fixed in 46938b9399 — forceKillAfter: "1 second" is set on the spawned command (appServerSupport.ts:154, adapter.ts:284) and on the explicit child.kill({ forceKillAfter: "1 second" }) finalizer (appServerSupport.ts:211), so a SIGTERM-ignoring app server cannot block scope cleanup.

Canonicalize the parent directory, containment-check the canonical
target, reject dangling symlinks at the final component via readLink,
and perform readFileString/writeFileString through the canonical path so
a symlinked ancestor or a swapped symlink cannot redirect I/O outside
the session checkout.
Generated by Mistral Vibe.
Co-Authored-By: Mistral Vibe <vibe@mistral.ai>
The parent directory is canonicalized via realPath(path.dirname(...)) and the containment check runs on the canonical target (path.join(parent, basename) + realPath), so a symlinked ancestor cannot redirect the I/O outside the checkout.
A dangling symlink at the final component is rejected explicitly via readLink when realPath finds no existing target.
readFileString/writeFileString now operate on the canonical resolved path instead of the lexically resolved one, so the check and the I/O use the same path and a symlink swapped between check and write can no longer diverge.
Typecheck, 16 tests, and lint green on the pushed head.

Extract the containment logic and cover it with a focused test.
The new containment logic is correct for the cases traced:
A symlinked parent directory is resolved first.
A final-component symlink that points outside the root is rejected.
A dangling final-component symlink is rejected.
Reads and writes use the canonical resolved path.
This logic is the only access guard for the agent's file reads and writes. It lives inside the onServerRequest closure in openSessionInner, so a test cannot reach it without a spawned app-server session. The repository testing rules ask for tests on "auth and permission guards" and on the logic a fix changed. The symlink cases above need tests that fail if the guard regresses.
Extract the logic into a small helper that takes root, filePath, FileSystem, and Path. Return the canonical path, or fail with a typed error. Then add rows to an existing test table for:
a parent symlink that points outside the root
a final symlink that points outside the root
a dangling symlink
a new file in a regular subdirectory
Use real temp-directory fixtures.
As per path instructions: "Hold changed code to the rules in docs/internals/effect-services.md" (test behavior through the service, with test layers only for external dependencies). As per coding guidelines: "Test behavior that can break, such as ... auth and permission guards".

Vibe streams assistant text through a non-standard `append` patch op on
history/entryUpdated. The adapter treated it as replace, so only the last
chunk of each reply survived. Also project only assistant message entries.

Vibe reports tool calls as `effect` history entries and thinking as
`reasoning` entries; the adapter only projected messages, so threads showed
no tool activity. Map effects to command_execution, file_change,
file_search, web_search, or dynamic_tool items, and reasoning to reasoning
items, with live status from the effect state.

Vibe sessions never received T3's MCP server, so Vibe agents could not
delegate, read threads, or use the browser and device tools. Pass the
thread's T3 MCP endpoint as a session MCP server on start and resume,
deliver T3's orchestration instructions on the prompt (Vibe has no
appendable system field), set T3CODE_THREAD_ID and the device-tool
environment on the app-server, and strip the instruction envelope from
replayed user messages.

Shorten the provider label from "Mistral Vibe" to "Vibe" and the usage
window from "Monthly allowance" to "Monthly", matching the plain window
names other providers use. Vibe names MCP tools `mcp_<server>.<tool>`, so
T3's own tools showed raw names; normalize them to `mcp__<server>__<tool>`
so they get T3's tool labels.

…ng setup
Vibe's `existing` worktree request requires the session cwd to be a
linked git worktree; for a No-project scratch directory it raised
"Path is not inside a git repository", which abandoned the deferred
session setup and made every later request fail with the conflict
"The session's workspace could not be prepared". Only send the
existing-worktree input when the cwd carries a `.git` file; otherwise
send `worktree: null` so the session runs in place.

Co-Authored-By: Mistral Vibe <vibe@mistral.ai>
… start
One vibe-app-server connection streams events for only the session it last
attached, but the adapter declared multi-thread sessions, so every Vibe
thread shared one process and one adapter state. Starting a second Vibe
thread silently detached the first: its turn kept running in Vibe while T3
never saw another event or the completion, and steering failed because the
recorded provider thread had been overwritten.
Vibe also rejects `worktree` on session/resume, so every resume after a
restart failed and fell back to a fresh session, and `worktree: existing`
fails Vibe's deferred workspace setup outside a linked worktree, which is
what broke No-project chats ("The session's workspace could not be
prepared").
- Declare one provider thread per session and use the session id the
orchestrator allocates, so each Vibe thread gets its own app-server.
- Stop sending `worktree`; Vibe runs in place in the thread's checkout,
which is what `existing` resolved to anyway. This drops the `.git` probe
and its dev dependency, which the lockfile never picked up.
- Route forks through T3's context handoff. The native fork reused the
source thread's session and passed a T3 turn id as Vibe's `afterTurnId`.
When Vibe's config/model/write rejected the thread's model (for example a
model the signed-in Mistral account isn't offered), the adapter logged a
warning and ran the turn on Vibe's fallback model anyway, so the thread
claimed one model while another answered.
The turn now stops before anything is sent, and the thread names the model
Vibe can't run and asks for another. Other model-write failures stop the
turn with the generic start-failure guidance instead of being ignored.
