feat(secrets): check a secret reference before saving it - #31723
A secret reference typed in Settings is only resolved when a provider starts, so a typo or a locked 1Password vault shows up as a signed-out provider later, far from the field that caused it.
Change
A check button beside a committed secret reference asks the server to read it fresh from its provider and reports whether it resolved, or why it did not. The value is never sent back to the client.
A readable secret also rebuilds only the provider instances that read it, from the value the check just read, so a fixed secret applies without a restart and unrelated secrets are not read again. A live instance keeps the values it already holds for its other references, so an earlier failed read of one of them does not block the check. The mutator gains applySecret and the provider registry applySecretAndRefresh for this.
New server.checkSecretSource RPC, guarded by the settings write scope in CLIENT_GUARDED_RPC_SCOPES. The server logic is a small SecretCheck service, and the RPC handler only decodes the input and calls it.
The settings forms that already render SecretSourceInput pass their environment so the button checks against the right server.
Scope and approval
Builds on the established secrets capability from #25709, #27756 and #31226, reusing SecretResolver, SecretSourceInput and the same secrets feature flag unchanged. It adds no provider kind and no setting.
Verification
vp test run apps/server/src/secrets/SecretCheck.test.ts: a readable secret returns Resolved with the value absent from the result and applies it once; an unreadable one returns Failed naming the provider and applies nothing. A third case runs the real resolver and instance registry: a store that answers the check's read but fails any later read still leaves the dependent instance available, and the unrelated reference is not read again.
vp test run packages/client-runtime/src/state/commandPermissions.test.ts: the check requires the destination's settings grant, in the same table as the OTLP check.
vp run check:changed: pass.
Not checked: a live 1Password account.
Screenshots: to follow.
Takeover
Taken over from @yordis; their commits, including the amended one that keeps a live instance's other secrets when a check applies one, stay on the branch.
A failed check no longer evicts a working cached secret: the check reads with SecretResolver.read(..., { fresh: true }), which stores a readable answer and otherwise keeps the value already held.
The check hands the value it read straight to the apply, so an overlapping Settings refresh cannot swap it out, for live and parked instances alike; a record-valued config secret replaces only its own key.
The button hides on servers without the new secretSourceCheck capability and while the field shows a rejected reference, follows its field's disabled state, and also appears on source-control tokens, Simlock hosts and a new local ACP provider's environment. Failures name the secret provider's label. One sentence in docs/user/secrets.md.
The mock-based SecretCheck tests were replaced by integration tests through SecretCheck.check over the real resolver and registries.

Recording. Both destinations check-capable at capture SHA; provider-specific origin/exit proof in verification archive. Success tooltip only says Secret resolved; Alpha named failure draft was cancelled.
Check buttons shorten inputs; retained C1-long/R41 shows native clipping before and more after; short C1 fits both themes.
R26 keeps Clear; R27 also changes its context row. R31–R34 surrounding layouts stay put. Final Diff0 has no unrelated regions.
Limits and accepted attempt:
R22 accepted app-limited attempt: disconnect replaces editor before click; no disconnect command-result or recovery claimed. R23 is now verified via the explicitly labelled transport harness; real post-failure config still advertises secretSourceCheck.
R35: real checks target distinct Alpha/Beta provider ids and environments; Alpha resolves, Beta fails independently. Red identity context is a separate synthetic gateway/credential probe. Other original-matrix variants, native clients and live 1Password remain outside this capture task.

Verification log
Reviews, three rounds of two independent reviewers on the full diff against main.
Round 1: a failed check evicted a working cached secret, which blocked a later check from applying; failure text used the provider id; older servers showed "Could not reach the server"; the button checked the previous reference after a rejected edit. All fixed.
Round 2: a failed Settings refresh of another secret blocked the apply (fixed by the contributor's carry change, merged); one reviewer MERGE.
Round 3: an overlapping refresh could replace the checked value; record-valued config secrets overwrote sibling keys. Both fixed in 9559e3a with tests that fail first. No open code findings.
Tests: apps/server/src/secrets/SecretCheck.test.ts 6 tests (each checked to fail with its fix reverted), plus the server.checkSecretSource row in packages/client-runtime/src/state/commandPermissions.test.ts. vp run check:changed passes on 7b767c0.
Evidence: proof audit derived the fixture matrix, then re-checked four capture rounds to SUFFICIENT; diffs regenerated and one capture rebuilt pixel-identical by the auditor.
Unverified: a live 1Password account (captures use a stub op CLI); a real disconnect before the click (R22: the app replaces the editor; R23 shows the same failure through a labelled browser-side transport fault); the desktop shell separately (it wraps the same web code). Mobile has no secret-reference fields.
AI-assisted; verified with the tests and tools listed above.

Summary
Check contract and authorization packages/contracts/src/settingsSecretValue.ts, packages/contracts/src/rpc.ts, packages/contracts/src/clientRpcPermissions.ts, packages/contracts/src/environment.ts
Defines SecretSourceCheckResult, adds server.checkSecretSource, and requires AuthSettingsWriteScope. The environment capability schema adds optional secretSourceCheck.
Adds fresh resolver reads and targeted secret application. The registry carries checked values into dependent instance rebuilds and refreshes affected providers. Failed full rereads preserve current secret values and live instances.
Server check and RPC wiring apps/server/src/secrets/SecretCheck.ts, apps/server/src/secrets/SecretCheck.test.ts, apps/server/src/ws.ts, apps/server/src/server.ts, apps/server/src/ws.test.ts, apps/server/src/environment/ServerEnvironment.ts, apps/server/src/observability/RpcInstrumentation.ts
Checks reference readability, applies readable values, and exposes the check through WebSocket RPC. The server environment advertises check support, and RPC instrumentation classifies the check method under the server aggregate. Tests cover success, failure, cache preservation, and provider refresh behavior.
Client command and settings control packages/client-runtime/src/state/server.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state/commandPermissions.test.ts, apps/web/src/components/settings/SecretSourceInput.tsx, apps/web/src/components/settings/ProviderInstanceCard.tsx, apps/web/src/components/settings/AddUsageLimitSourceDialog.tsx, apps/web/src/components/settings/AddProviderInstanceDialog.tsx, apps/web/src/components/settings/EasDeviceHostEditor.tsx, apps/web/src/components/settings/ProviderSettingsForm.tsx, apps/web/src/components/settings/SimlockDeviceHostEditor.tsx, apps/web/src/components/settings/SourceControlTokenSettings.tsx, docs/user/secrets.md
Adds the client command and permission tests. Settings inputs pass environment identifiers and display check status for eligible committed references. The user guide describes checking a reference and applying a readable value to providers using it.
pingdotgg/t3code#22364 — The PR adds a method to WsRpcGroup, but the available evidence does not establish whether it addresses the reported typechecking limit.

These are the takeover's tests for pingdotgg#31723. They replace the PR's
SecretCheck tests, which mocked SecretResolver and ProviderRegistry by
internal method name, with two tests through SecretCheck.check over the
real SecretResolver, makeProviderInstanceRegistry and ProviderRegistry:
- a readable secret resolves without returning its value, and rebuilds
and refreshes only the instance that reads it, from the check's one
read (no second read, the unrelated secret is not re-read)
- an unreadable secret fails naming its provider and leaves instances
alone
The commandPermissions row for server.checkSecretSource stays.
Source control tokens, Simlock device host tokens and a new local ACP
provider's environment now pass their environment, so the check button
shows there too. An empty secret reads as unresolved, as it does for
settings secrets. Users learn about the check in the secrets guide.

… read
The check invalidated the reference before reading it, so a locked vault
replaced a working cached value with a failure, and a later rebuild of an
instance that also reads that secret was skipped. The check now reads with
`fresh`, which stores a readable answer and leaves a held value in place
otherwise.
The failure names the secret provider's label, the check button hides on
servers without the `secretSourceCheck` capability, and it hides while the
field shows a rejected reference.
Settings gains a check button beside a secret reference. It reads the secret fresh from its provider and says whether it resolved, without sending the value to the client. A readable secret also rebuilds the provider instances that depend on it.

Continue refreshing after one provider fails.
If one dependent refresh fails, the wrapper returns before refreshing later dependents. Their snapshots may remain unrefreshed until a later probe. The rebuilt instances already hold the new secret.

…fig key
The check passed only the reference to the registry, which read the value
back from the resolver cache. A Settings refresh holding the registry lock
could re-read that reference from a now-locked vault in between, so the
check reported Resolved while the instance kept the old value or stayed
parked. The checked value now travels with the reference and is used for
both live and parked instances without going through the cache.
A record-valued config secret matched its slots by field alone, so
checking one key overwrote its siblings; slots now match on field and key.
